Indiana Fever guard sparked one of the defining controversies of 2026 when her comments on transgender athletes participating in women's sports were published in an ESPN profile on her on July 21.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" Cunningham told ESPN. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
The comments led to rallies in support of Cunningham outside of Fever games, a statement from the White House, and even multiple coaches around the league to weigh in.
Now, Golden State Valkyries All-Star and French National team star Gabby Williams is addressing the topic, and she's approaching it with inclusivity.
"I think it's trans rights now is our new battle," Williams said. "That's what I think I was saying, that like the battles have changed. Oh yes. You know, like our intention has been the same, but now that the environment has changed, we see trans people's rights being stripped away from them.
