ASA-AL, Gama-DF, Uberlândia-MG, and ABC-RN qualified for the Série D semifinals and secured promotion to Série C this weekend. The quartet can now focus on winning the competition. To reach the final, ASA will face Gama, while Uberlândia will take on ABC.
The team from Alagoas got past Goiatuba-GO. After another draw, this time 1-1 in Arapiraca (AL), they won on penalties, with Motta scoring a chipped penalty in the decisive kick — the first leg had ended 0-0. At Bezerrão, in Gama (DF), the home side thrashed São José-RS 4-0 and secured their spot with a 5-1 aggregate score.
Uberlândia, meanwhile, had come off a 1-0 win over CSA and won again, this time 2-0 in Maceió. ABC, for their part, beat Nacional-AM 1-0 in Natal. The black-and-white side from Rio Grande do Norte had held a 2-1 advantage.
Despite being knocked out in the quarterfinals, Nacional-AM, CSA-AL, São José-RS, and Goiatuba-GO will compete in the promotion playoffs for the 2027 Série C. In two-legged ties, Nacional and CSA will battle for one of the spots, while São José and Goiatuba will fight for the other.

Away from home, Santos FC defeated Vasco da Gama 3-0 at São Januário. The match, valid for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship, was played this Sunday (16) and featured goals from Gabriel Barbosa, Willian Arão, and Luan Peres.
This Sunday's victory moved Peixe up to 14th place with 25 points. Santos will return to the pitch in the Brasileirão on the 23rd against Mirassol at Vila Belmiro.
In the first half, in the 14th minute, Barreal headed the ball to Gabriel Barbosa, who was facing the goalkeeper. The Menino da Vila struck with his right foot, and the ball went just wide of the post.
Then, in the 35th minute, Gabriel Brazão had to be called into action. Lucas Píton received the ball on the left wing and shot on goal, but found the Santos shot-stopper ready for the play.
The second half began with the home side on the attack, already forcing Gabriel Brazão into an important save in the opening minute after a cross went straight toward goal.

The Mets racked up 18 hits on their way to their third win and series sweep against the Guardians, 13-6. Nolan McLean was good for most of his outing, and when he needed to come out after the fifth inning, the bullpen smothered the Guardians' hitters, allowing two hits and one run.
The first inning was deceptively quiet for the Mets. With two outs, Luis Robert, Jr. sneaked a ground ball into left field for a single, but Carson Benge struck out immediately after that. When McLean took the mound for the bottom of the inning he issued two walks back-to-back, and then allowed a line-drive single to Nathaniel Lowe to load the bases. After this, Angel Martínez managed an RBI single on a grounder to center field that scored Chase DeLauter and José Ramírez. After getting the second out, McLean gave up another single, this one on a fly ball smacked into left field by Petey Halpin. Fortunately, McLean got Patrick Bailey to fly out right after that, and the inning ended with the Guardians leading 2-0.
In the second inning, Marcus Semien responded by bouncing a home run off the top of the fence, slightly confusing the announcers. Next up, Eric Wagaman lined a single into center field, setting up Luis Torrens to drive a two-run home run into right field, stunning new Guardians pitcher Foster Griffin and giving the Mets the lead. McLean continued to struggle slightly with walks, allowing one to Travis Bazzana. Bazzana stole second base after Torrens' throw to second was a bit too high, but he was stranded there when Wagaman dove to stop a ground ball from Ramírez and got it to McLean in time for the third out. The score remained Mets 3, Guardians 2 at the end of the inning.
Bo Bichette walked to lead off the third inning but was caught in a fielder's choice out when Robert grounded to third softly. With Robert on first, Carson Benge smacked an RBI triple off the wall above Halpin's head, scoring Robert. Francisco Alvarez walked as well, and Semien scored Benge on a sac fly into left field for the second out. Wagaman struck out for the third out, but after Nolan McLean retired the batters in order at the bottom of the inning, the score was Mets 5, Guardians 2.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Lindor drove a single into left field, and Bichette doubled on another line drive, sending Lindor to third base. However, Robert flied out to right field to end the half-inning and strand the pair in scoring position. McLean once again worked a 1-2-3 inning. Matt Festa replaced Foster Griffin in the top of the fifth inning and gave up another walk to Alvarez with one out. Semien then rolled a double down the left field line, and Alvarez slid into to third. Jared Young pinch-hit for Wagaman and threaded an RBI single through the infielders into left field, scoring Alvarez. Young then stole second base completely uncontested. However, the next two outs came back-to-back to strand the runners in scoring position again.

Star striker Thembi Kgatlana scored as South Africa edged Burkina Faso 1-0 on Tuesday to squeeze into the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals in Morocco.
Mexico-based Kgatlana struck her second goal of the tournament after 21 minutes in Casablanca, then her team withstood continuous second-half pressure in a tense match.
The winning goal will haunt Burkinabe central defender Madinatou Rouamba, who failed to cut off a cross from Fikile Magama, leaving Kgatlana to tap the ball past goalkeeper Nina Dabilgou.
Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty just two minutes into the second half, but the decision by the Cameroonian referee was reversed after a VAR review.
The rest of the half saw a string of Burkinabe attacks, but a lack of creativity, wild shooting and an impressive display from goalkeeper Kaylin Swart defied the west Africans.

SRYACUSE 5, SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 4 (BOX)
Syracuse went down early in this game, trailing 2-0 after one. That 2-0 deficit held until the fourth, where a three run inning powered by a Ronny Marucio solo home run, an Eric Wagaman RBI ground out, and a run scoring throwing error gave them a lead. The RailRiders would tie it in the bottom of the frame and take a 4-3 lead in the sixth, but a two run single by Wagaman gave the Mets a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning that would stick.

The Major League Baseball draft hurt the Auburn Tigers as two of their infield stars and a high school signee were selected. Auburn baseball is working to rebuild its infield by adding a player from the transfer portal late in the cycle.
Former UNLV infielder Cooper Sheff announced his commitment to Auburn via Instagram this week. Sheff is Auburn's third fielder signee in a haul that is headlined by pitchers.
Sheff, a native of Las Vegas, hit .295 for the Rebels last season with nine home runs, 38 RBI, and five stolen bases. He recorded multiple hits in 14 games last season. He reached a season-high four hits against Washington State on April 19, one day after recording three hits against the Cougars. Sheff also smashed two of his nine home runs in a road game at Northwestern on March 8.
Auburn second baseman Chris Rembert and third baseman Eric Guevara were both selected during the 2026 MLB Draft that took place last weekend, as was high school signee Jace Matacynski. The Tigers return shortstop Brandon McCraine and first baseman Ethin Bingaman for 2027, and will look to fit Sheff and Iowa transfer Ben Swails into the mix.

As the beginnings of a Mexico City thunderstorm swirl high above, dark clouds circling like a slow-motion whirlpool, a pair of English fans do not give a jot.
It is three hours before Mexico face England in the most anticipated match at the Estadio Azteca in 40 years. Attendees are being warned to take cover as the police implement their electrical storm protocol. But these adults, merry on pure vibes, are engrossed in the most childlike of games: a chalk-drawn hopscotch on the gravel, outside the stadium's Cabecera Norte end, with 'Viva Mexico' at the top. And the locals, kids and adults alike, are loving it.
And when embarking on a lap of the outer perimeter of the World Cup's most iconic venue before the blockbuster last-16 occasion, similar feel-good scenes are at every corner. Event volunteers dressed in blue and green form a 'Limbo' dance opportunity for passers-by; half a dozen Mexican dance groups greet ticket holders to the south of the main entrance; Mexicans joust with English in gentle ribbing as they queue for entry into the arena.
It is an intoxicating, smile-inducing, dopamine-hitting environment. This is the essence of the biggest event in world sport: the amalgamation of different nationalities and cultures, old and young, male and female. All coalescing, with passion and fervour, in a setting completely irrational and illogical, if it were not for two national football teams going head-to-head.
This is the premise of founder Jules Rimet's vision when he formed the very first World Cup in 1930. In his words: "It's about bringing together countries from around the world, people who might otherwise have nothing in common… at least for a little while." And, mercifully, 96 years on in its 23rd edition, the tournament still fulfils this overarching ethos, despite all the factors working against those in the stands.

The Mets struggled again today against the Red Sox, ultimately being shut out for the ninth time this season and losing 4-0. The offense could not get anything going, even as the pitching and defense made a good effort to strand most Red Sox runners.
Freddy Peralta looked good initially, throwing his fastball for the majority of the first inning and striking out the batters in order. In the second inning, he struggled more, and the results were not as impressive. Caleb Durbin threaded one between Francisco Lindor and Brett Baty for a single. In the next at bat, Peralta challenged ball 4, but the call was confirmed, resulting in a walk for Masataka Yoshida. A sacrifice bunt from Andruw Monasterio moved the runners to second and third with one out. Peralta walked Carlos Narváez to load the bases with two outs; however, he worked out of it by striking out Tsung-Che Cheng. Unfortunately, by the end of the second inning, his pitch count was already 43.
After a quiet first inning, the Mets offense walked a batter in each of the second and third innings, but could not capitalize or create any momentum. Carson Benge walked in the second inning and stole second base one pitch later, but the three batters went down in order after him to end the inning. Brett Baty walked in the third inning, but after Zack Short struck out, A.J. Ewing grounded into a force out behind him, and Juan Soto popped out to end the third inning.
Peralta walked Durbin to lead off the fourth inning, and Durbin slid into second when Yoshida flied out to Soto. After an injury delay due to a ricochet off the face masks of both Francisco Alvarez and the home plate umpire, Brock Ballou, Monasterio smacked a two-run home run into left field. At the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Jorge Polanco fouled a ball off the inside of his knee, resulting in another injury delay, but he got back up and dropped a line drive into center field, just out of reach of Ceddanne Rafaela, for a single. Unfortunately, this prompted the Red Sox to change pitchers to Greg Weissert, who struck out Wagaman to end the fourth: Red Sox 2, Mets 0.
Peralta started with a walk to Cheng in the fifth. However, Seigler grounded into a force out when Short robbed him by laying out to block the base hit. Ultimately, this move saved a run for Peralta when the next two hitters gave him trouble. Rafaela popped one over Wagaman’s head that rolled slowly down the baseline for a double, moving Seigler to third. Peralta walked Abreu to load the bases and bring his pitch count to 91, prompting a pitching change. Huascar Brazobán replaced a clearly unhappy Peralta for the last two outs of the fifth. Durbin was called out on strikes thanks to a well-placed challenge from Alvarez that overturned ball three to strike three. Yoshida grounded out to first for the third out, leaving the bases loaded and ending the scoring threat.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A Papua separatist group said Thursday it shot dead an American pilot who allegedly transported Indonesian troops into the restive province.
A spokesman for the West Papua Liberation Army, or TPNPB, said its fighters fatally shot Nicholas F. Goselin and set fire to an aircraft operated by PT AMA, an Indonesian airline, in Balinggama village.
The plane was carrying one pilot and seven passengers, Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation said. After the pilot reported that the aircraft had landed, communications with personnel at the airstrip were subsequently lost, the ministry said in a statement.

We are getting into the dog days of summer, and fantasy baseball owners are grinding just like the MLB players are. A ton of our fantasy stars are dinged up and struggling to stay on the field. These are the top injured hitters that fantasy owners need to monitor for tonight's game.
Soto was forced from last night's game due to a back issue. He exited after the fourth innings because his back locked up. His status for tonight's game is now up in the air. The star outfielder has been red-hot, so he will be a tough loss for fantasy owners.
If Soto does miss time, whether it be one game or beyond, MJ Melendez is the favorite to fill in for him, with Eric Wagaman also being a candidate to get more playing time with Soto sidelined. Fantasy owners will need to monitor this situation up until the Mets release their lineup for tonight's game.
Schwarber is the league's most prolific home run hitter, and he was forced to miss last night's game due to lower-back tightness. It's not yet clear if he will be able to play in tonight's game.
In last night's game, Edmundo Sosa filled in as the DH with Schwarber sidelined. As of now, we would expect Sosa to fill in at DH again tonight, but they do have other options who they can play in their DH slot.

The world of celebrity real estate is a heady place, one that is filled with glittering megamansions, luxury developments, and buzz-worthy listings. But there is also a much darker side to this gleaming industry, one plagued by scandal, backlash, and a very hefty dose of uproar.
In recent years, there has been no shortage of headlines about these dramas, the most recent of which centers around first daughter Ivanka Trump's plans to build a $1.4 billion resort on an island in Albania, a project that has sparked furious protests among locals.
Together with her husband, Jared Kushner, Ivanka is aiming to transform Sazan, a former Soviet weapon's base, into a 10,000-room hotel, complete with every high-end amenity the richest and most privileged travelers could ever imagine.
But the plans have been met with outrage from the people of Albania, who have turned out in the thousands to protest the development in recent days.
However, the couple are far from the only high-profile figures to have found themselves at the center of a real estate scandal, instead joining the likes of pop star Katy Perry, rapper Kanye West, and developer Mohamed Hadid, all of whom have courted controversy with their own property moves in recent years.
