From the moment the 2025 season ended, UTSA set out to find answers for the team's biggest shortcomings. At the top of the list? Winning on the road, and avoiding slow starts.
The Roadrunners are 3-10 away from the Alamodome the past two years, opening the 2024 season 2-4 and starting 3-4 in 2025.
Now, after months of preparing and retooling, UTSA will finally find out if the problems have been solved, visiting Texas State for an I-35 rivalry showdown at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.
"We've been talking about it for a long time," Roadrunners defensive lineman Tai Leonard said. "We've been doing all the work that's required. So, I mean, God willing, we can go out there and showcase."
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor knows the results his offseason of changes to staff, roster construction and even day-to-day practice schedules will take more than one day to bear out.

The I-35 Rivalry returns to San Marcos, as Texas State football hosts UTSA on Saturday in a clash between two of Texas' biggest midmajor programs.
The Bobcats' rise has coincided with increased success against the Roadrunners. Head coach GJ Kinne has led Texas State to two straight wins over UTSA and his former mentor, Jeff Traylor, after a 20-13 loss in Kinne's debut year. The Bobcats handed the Roadrunners a 49-10 drubbing last time they met in San Marcos, and Traylor made it clear in the days leading up to the game that he hasn't forgotten that embarrassment.

Although Texas State was thoroughly outmatched against Texas in Week 1, there were a few positive takeaways. There is no doubt in the offense led by quarterback Brad Jackson and his dynamic wide receiver duo of Chris Dawn Jr. and Beau Sparks, but the defense left a lot to be desired. UTSA quarterback Owen McCown and running back Will Henderson will test how effective Texas State's offseason changes were in improving the unit that has been its kryptonite the past three seasons.
Traylor adjusted his offseason approach, bringing in veteran transfers and a new offensive coordinator. UTSA kept things vanilla against UTRGV last week and will likely have some nasty surprises for Texas State. Here are live updates from the I-35 Rivalry.

Running their traditional slot-T offense, the Panthers (2-0) have started their season in impressive fashion with wins over Killeen High and San Marcos.
Vandegrift (1-1) used a fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually take a 28-21 win over San Antonio Brennan in Week 1, then lost 38-7 to San Antonio Johnson in Week 2 in a rare home loss.

Outside the quarterback battle, no player on Iowa's roster made more headlines this offseason than transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz.
Diaz transferred from UT Rio Grande Valley, hoping to become a difference-maker for the Hawkeyes' offense. In Iowa's opener against Northern Illinois, Diaz lived up to the GameDay hype. Diaz finished with seven grabs for 84 yards and a touchdown. The San Marcos, Texas, product had a good rapport with both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski. Diaz won on his routes, created a ton of separation, and looked extremely shifty in the open field.

Nacional-AM moved closer to promotion to Série C by beating CSA-AL 3-1 on Thursday night (27) in the first leg of the Série D promotion play-offs. At the Arena da Amazônia in Manaus, the Leão da Vila Municipal built an advantage that allows them to lose by up to one goal in the second leg of the tie.
All four goals in the match were scored in the first half. Sassá, Renanzinho and Rafa Marcos found the net for the home side, while Matheus pulled one back for the team from Alagoas.
The teams will meet again next Thursday (3) at Rei Pelé in Maceió, at 8 p.m. Brasília time. Playing at home, CSA will have the chance to overturn the defeat. Tottenham Hotspur fans would have been expectant of great things coming into this season. Roberto De Zerbi had the squad performing admirably at the conclusion of last season as the club narrowly avoided relegation, and a strong preseason campaign combined with a flurry of activity in the transfer market seemed to herald a new dawn for the North London club. Instead, Spurs looked all at sea in their opening match of the 2026/27 season, crashing to a 3-0 defeat as they were dominated in all facets by a buoyant Brentford side.
Spurs' starting XI was much as expected, in line with the side De Zerbi had used in preseason accounting for absences due to World Cup duties, fitness, and injury. Mikey Moore made his second Spurs start on the right wing while Archie Gray captained the side, lining up at right back. He rounded out a new-look backline, with Gray, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson making up the back four. Keith Andrews named a strong side of his own, with new signing Mamadou Sangare lining up in midfield for Brentford and no room for Mikel Damsgaard, such was the quality of Brentford's other attacking options.
The first half was all Brentford, with Spurs looking all at sea. The home side nearly opened the scoring early via a set piece, as Andy Robertson's defensive header deflected narrowly over the crossbar, before Nathan Collins couldn't direct a header of his own on target. The chances kept coming for Brentford, as Keane Lewis-Potter easily beat Archie Gray to deliver a cross that was fortunate to not be directed by Jan Paul van Hecke into his own goal.
Brentford finally made their domination count. Mamadou Sangare played a one-two with Dango Outtara, as both Lucas Bergvall and Andy Robertson failed to track the run of the Malian midfielder. Outtara squared simply for Lewis-Potter, who was open on the penalty spot for essentially a tap-in.
It wasn't long before Brentford doubled their lead. Richarlison's pass back to Bergvall was loose with the Swede then too casual taking the ball in possession, losing out to Mathias Jensen. The Dane ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and Antonin Kinsky made a meal of it, seemingly misjudging the direction of the shot as he reached back across his body to make the save. The Czech keeper succeeded only in palming the ball out to Vitaly Janelt who finished comfortable from close range. Spurs were stunned, and Brentford took a 2-0 lead into the half.

Cristian Romero has completed his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid, with both clubs confirming the deal. Sources told ESPN that Spurs will receive €35 million plus €5m in variables for the centre-back, who has signed a five-year contract with Los Colchoneros.
Romero joined Tottenham initially on loan from Atalanta in 2021 and went on to make 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals across five seasons. He helped Spurs qualify for the Champions League and starred as Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar.

Cristian Romero on Saturday completed his move to Atlético de Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur, after a club-to-club agreement was reached on Wednesday.
Romero on Friday flew to Madrid, underwent his medical and signed his new contract to 2031. The 28-year-old took training for the first time on Saturday, and he could be in the squad Wednesday when Atlético host Malága to begin its 2026/27 campaign. Romero had drawn interest from Inter Milan, FC Barcelona and even Spurs' city rivals ***** nal, once it became clear that the Argentina international would be leaving Tottenham; he said goodbye to Spurs fans in a video posted to social media on Friday.
Sporting director Mateu Alemany has closed this deal for an initial fee of €33 million, according to Marca. The Madrid daily reports that Spurs can receive another €7 million in bonuses. Spurs will retain a 15 percent sell-on clause, per reports in England. The fee is in line with each of the other deals Alemany has concluded this summer, the exception being Alejandro Grimaldo's €20 million move from Bayer Leverkusen.
Diego Simeone had long courted Romero, a 58-time Argentina international who led Spurs to a Europa League crown in 2025. Atleti attempted to sign him last year, but Spurs slapped an €80 million price tag on Romero and eventually renewed his contract to 2029 while naming him club captain. One summer later, after a turbulent campaign that saw Romero rip club management multiple times, Spurs are moving on — and Simeone is getting his top defensive target at last.
Following a 156-game Spurs career, Romero is expected to be the anchor of a refurbished defense at the Metropolitano. He can line up in a trio alongside Dávid Hancko and Marc Pubill to form a 3-5-2 where Grimaldo and Marcos Llorente would play as wing-backs. Tottenham are moving like a club that have stopped thinking small. According to TeamTalk, Spurs have held conversations over a possible summer move for Endrick, and while plenty still has to happen before this becomes concrete, the logic is obvious.
Roberto De Zerbi has already overseen an aggressive window. Tottenham have added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while smashing their transfer record twice. That tells you two things. First, the club are backing the new head coach properly. Second, they are not done.
De Zerbi has made it clear the squad build is incomplete, particularly in attack. Savinho is reportedly the priority out wide, Cody Gakpo remains on the radar and Pedro Neto is viewed as an alternative. Endrick, though, is a different discussion. He is not a standard market opportunity, he is one of those rare cases where elite potential becomes temporarily available because a super-club have too many moving parts at once.

The key detail is the structure. Real Madrid are only prepared to authorise another straight loan. That usually puts some clubs off. Tottenham, apparently, are open to it, even without a buy option. Tottenham Hotspur began their preseason campaign with a win in a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side MK Dons at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground.
With several players missing due to the recently completed World Cup, a mix of youth and experience was on display as Roberto De Zerbi heavily rotated his side each half. New signings Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Martin Dubravka made their debuts, and it was the former who was the difference, with his stunning strike the lone goal in a scrappy encounter.
Here's my top ten talking points from Spurs' first outing under Thomas Frank.
Spurs' first friendly was as notable for who was missing as much as who was named. With the World Cup only recently wrapping up in the Americas, it was obviously much too soon to see the likes of Djed Spence, Pedro Porro, Marcos Senesi, or Cristian Romero; but other players involved in the World Cup also weren't involved. Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Sarr, and Andy Robertson were all missing due to enforced leave following their international duties.
This meant limited learnings as to how the squad will shape up when the season kicked off, and also raises questions as to who will be available for the tour to Australia and New Zealand. An additional point of concern was the absence of James Maddison, who had no such international commitments and who made his return from an ACL injury towards the end of last season. The fact he did not see the pitch is concerning given his injury history. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NCAA Division II athletes would move immediately to the age-based eligibility model adopted in Division I under proposed emergency legislation announced Tuesday.
The Division II Management Council recommended the division's executive board adopt the model that would create a five-year period of eligibility, effective for the 2026-27 academic year. Under the proposal, an athlete's eligibility would begin upon initial full-time enrollment or the regular academic year immediately following the student-athlete's 19th birthday, whichever occurs earlier.
The model was approved in Division I last month and would replace the current Division II model giving athletes four seasons of competition to be completed within their first 10 semesters or 15 quarters of full-time enrollment.
"As we continue evaluating the future of Division II eligibility, our focus remains on creating legislation that is not only easy to understand but is also equitable and centered on the student-athlete experience," said Ben Cherry, faculty athletics representative at Cal State San Marcos and chair of the management council. "This age-based model simplifies the rules structure by providing clarity and consistency while continuing to support academic success and student-athlete well-being."
A series of lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts since the Division I Council approved age-based eligibility June 23. Athletes who graduated from high school in 2022 and exhausted their four-year eligibility in the last academic year have argued they have been unfairly denied a fifth year of eligibility in 2026-27.

Bournemouth are in talks with Benfica to sign Portugal defender Antonio Silva as a replacement for Marcos Senesi.
The Cherries have targeted the 22-year-old following Senesi's decision to leave on a free transfer and join Tottenham Hotspur.
Silva is seen as a good ball-playing replacement for the Argentina centre-back, although Benfica have paused further progression in the talks as they look to get through Europa League qualifying.
