Two Ohio State players continue to receive preseason recognition on the offensive side of the ball, and that continued with ESPN unveiling its preseason college football All-American team last week. The "worldwide leader" only selected a First and Second Team, with special teams included, so it was an exclusive group. Eli Lederman and Max Olson only went into detail with the First Team.
The Buckeyes are expected to have one of the best offenses in the country this year with so much returning production, and it's that side of the ball that saw players named by ESPN. As you would expect, quarterback Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith were the two players that made the cut.
"A compelling case can be made that Ohio State's star pass catcher is the best all-around player in college football entering the season, regardless of position. Smith recorded 87 catches for 1,243 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall and returns for his junior season on the heels of back-to-back first-team All-America selections. Equipped with an elite combination of speed, explosiveness, and size at 6-foot-3, Smith is a matchup nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators, a go-to target for Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin and one of the top prospects in the 2027 NFL draft class for good reason. No current FBS pass catcher has logged more receiving yards (2,258) and touchdowns (27) than Smith since the start of the 2024 campaign."
Even the most casual fan knows about Smith. Widely considered the best player in the country despite what the awards say, Smith has already put together two of the best seasons we've ever seen a wide receiver do. So far, he has totaled 163 receptions for 2,558 yards (15.7 avg.) and 27 touchdowns. He's also rushed for two scores. He is expected to have another huge year and is closing in on breaking some of the biggest all-time receiving records in Columbus.
"Sayin took over as the Buckeyes' starter a year ago and immediately established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Prolifically accurate -- his FBS-best 77% completion percentage last fall ranks third in NCAA history -- Sayin threw for 3,610 yards and 42 touchdowns and flashed situational poise in his debut season. His third-down passing conversion rate of 47.8% trailed only those of USC's Jayden Maiava (48.5%) and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza (48.1%) among FBS quarterbacks with at least 250 attempts, per ESPN Research. Sayin will be tested by a more challenging schedule and a new system under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith this fall. But supported by elite pass catchers (see: Jeremiah Smith) and a promising running game, Sayin should be even better in 2026."

One USC Trojan freshman receiver is entering the season with a ton of buzz. Ethan **** ie Feaster may be the youngest player in college football this season. He is definitely the youngest player on the Trojans' roster. He enters the season at 17 years old. That does not matter much when a receiver has the skill he possesses. The highly touted five-star freshman will suit up for the Trojans with expectations of contributing early.
As a junior in high school in 2025, he posted a stat line of 69 receptions for 1,264 yards with 15 TDs. He is a guy who can create big-time plays, and he showed that in his final high school season as he put up 18.3 yards per catch. Lincoln Riley and the Trojans offense are at their best when they can create explosive plays; that will be Feaster's best contribution to the offense. Already in camp, the freshman has done that multiple times in recent practices.
The Trojans offense will be without an explosive weapon like Makai Lemon, and a big-time outside threat in Ja'Kobi Lane. Terrell Anderson and Tanook Hines will both be productive, but I would not be surprised if a player like Feaster gets on the field and makes his presence felt quickly. He has all the makings of a difference-maker and a player who would make Jayden Maiava's life a lot easier.
Featser was named after the infamous **** ie Miles from the film Friday Night Lights, and he sure does have that same electrifying feel to him. I expect Featser to become not just the talk of the town at USC but also a name that is known across college football very soon.

After a 1-1 draw with Coritiba this Saturday (15) at MorumBIS, in a match valid for the 23rd round of the Brasileirão, defensive midfielder Pablo Maia spoke in the mixed zone.
"It's hard to talk. I think we have to be more focused throughout the whole game, not just for part of it. I think we have to stay alert, stay focused, and give our best every single minute. We had a first half in which we managed to impose what the coach told us to do. So I think we have to work on this point of concentration from the beginning to the end of the game," he said.
The player also praised the fans' support and asked them to show up for the match against Bolívar-BOL next Tuesday (18) in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana.
"Starting tomorrow, we have to switch gears because we have a very important game on Tuesday, here at MorumBIS, with the support of our fans. Today they supported us, and I hope they support us again on Tuesday so that we can give our best together with them," he concluded.
Tricolor's next challenge will be against Bolívar-BOL on Tuesday (18) at 9:30 p.m., once again at MorumBIS, in the second leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana round of 16. In the Brasileirão, São Paulo return to the field against Chapecoense on Sunday (23) at 6:30 p.m. at Arena Condá, in Chapecó (SC).

Fantasy football plans to join the exciting world of college football this upcoming season. With the talent in college football, there are many young stars who will be very valuable in fantasy football. The USC Trojans have an explosive offense under Lincoln Riley, and more often than not, his offense features dynamic playmakers. The Trojans' offense would be a good place to target players for your fantasy football team. One name to monitor is receiver Tanook Hines.
In a recent college football fantasy football rankings for the receiver position, Eric Froton highlights USC receiver Tanook Hines as the No. 21 receiver.
Tanook Hines enters his sophomore season with high expectations, seeing that the #1 spot in this offense at receiver is up for the taking. Last season, USC's offense had two NFL-caliber receivers in their position group; both are now primed to dominate in the NFL too. Yet Hines, when given the opportunity, flashed the potential of being an elite receiver. The best example of that was the Trojans' bowl game vs USC, as both Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane sat for NFL draft prep. Hines posted 6 catches for 163 yards. He was Maiava's favorite target. That game could very well be a glimpse of what this season could look like.
With Hines' playmaking ability and his ability to get yards after the catch, he is a weapon very worthy of being taken in college football fantasy drafts. Riley will put him in a great position for success this season, both in the actual game and for fantasy football. Would not be surprised if he ends up being a big steal for fantasy football.

Demian Maia has made a career out of squeezing people's necks in a cage to earn two ******* le shots in the UFC, and now uses all that knowledge and skill in a new role as MMA coach. After being part of Charles Oliveira's camp for a one-sided victory over Max Holloway earlier this year, it's time for Ian Machado Garry to shock the world against welterweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Garry challenges Makhachev in the main event of UFC 330, which goes down Saturday night in Philadelphia, and attempt to snap what would be a record-breaking 17th straight UFC victory. For Maia, it's a fascinating "puzzle at an extremely high level of fighting."
"You have a guy with elite wrestling — and why not say a level of jiu-jitsu mixed in with the wrestling of Sambo, at an exceptional level —, along with a champion's mindset," Maia told MMA Fighting. "He's going to fight another guy who also has tremendous tactical intelligence, a very high level of striking, exceptional distance control, and increasingly better jiu-jitsu."
Garry earned his shot by beating Carlos Prates and ex-champion Bella Muhammad in back-to-back fights, losing only once as a profession in a short-notice clash with Shavkat Rakhmonov. The welterweight Irishman has a long reach and height advantage over the champion, and Maia sees that as a potential key to victory.
"I think it's a very open fight," Maia said. "I think Ian has the size advantage. He's bigger and — and this is kind of obvious to say — the advantage in the striking. I think he has an advantage because that's his area. He's very technical, but he has distance control that very few guys have. We saw that in the Carlos Prates fight and in the MVP fight, which is an extremely difficult matchup, and in the fight with Belal, a former champion.

Watch list season in college football continues to roll along. Recently, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava and running back Waymond Jordan were named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. However, they were not the only Trojans to make a watch list this past week.
On Tuesday, the watch list was announced for the Outland Trophy, presented annually to the top interior lineman in college football. Included on the list was USC offensive lineman Alani Noa.
After earning snaps as a reserve offensive lineman in 2023, Noa has started at offensive guard for the Trojans each of the past two seasons, Now, he returns for his senior year as a key member of a USC offensive line that is bringing back all five starters from 2025 (minus center Kilian O'Connor, who head coach Lincoln Riley announced on Thursday suffered an injury and will miss the entire season).
The only Trojan to ever win the Outland Trophy was offensive lineman Ron Yary all the way back in 1967. For context, USC head coach Lincoln Riley would not be born for another 16 years after that. Now, six decades later, Noa will look to become the second.
USC will kick off its 2026 season on August 29 at the Coliseum against San Jose State.

USC Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava was eligible to enter the NFL Draft last year, but he wisely decided to return to school. His statistical numbers were definitely there, and he might have indeed been a mid-round pick, had he entered the 2026 draft.
However, the Honolulu, Hawaii native opted-in to the Alamo Bowl last season, for a game that almost all of his key teammates opted-out of.
Maiava committed to play, performed very well in the postseason game, and then returned for another season with the Trojans.
Right now, he's solidly projected to a be a day two selection, and he's on pretty much everybody's top ten QB list for the 2027 draft. He's got prototypical size and throws a great deep ball, but he's still pretty turnover **** e.
Not to mention he also needs to work on improving how he works through his progressions.

Last week marked Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. During the event, the conference unveiled its 2026 preseason honors list, One of the players to receive honors was USC quarterback Jayden Maiava.
Unlike a typical preseason all-conference team, the list consists of 12 players, with position not being taken into account. Hence, Maiava was one of three Big Ten quarterbacks to receive honors, along with Ohio State's Julian Sayin and Oregon's Dante Moore.
Maiava is entering his second full season as USC's starting quarterback. As a redshirt junior in 2025, he threw for 3,711 yards and 24 touchdowns, while also adding six scores on the ground. The Trojans finished their 2025 campaign with a record of 9-4.
Maiava and USC will open the 2026 season on August 29 at the Coliseum against San Jose State.

The more weapons USC has in the passing game, the more explosive the Trojans' offense will be. Last season, the Trojans had two bona fide wide receiver weapons in Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane. They also had a reliable, sure-thing tight end in Lake McRee. This season, there is some uncertainty among Jayden Maiava's pass-catchers, but a freshman is still providing some excitement. In a recent article, Lorenzo Reyna projects a highly touted recruit to be a breakout candidate for the Trojans in fall camp. Here is what he had to say about freshman Kayden Dixon-Wyatt:
"Returning wide receiver Tanook Hines is guaranteed to get his touches with Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane off to the NFL. Prized transfer from North Carolina State Terrell Anderson is getting the ball too.
But four-star signing from Mater Dei Kayden Dixon-Wyatt earns the chance to start out as the third option for this Air Raid offense before working his way to the leading wideout in the room.
Dixon-Wyatt attacks the football in flight but can adjust his body on short throws. He presents advanced separation on his routes too against defenders. He's got a chance to follow USC legend Amon-Ra St. Brown as the next Mater Dei star to thrive in the land of troy."
Dixon-Wyatt has all the upside to be an elite target for Jayden Maiava. As things currently stand, Terrell Anderson and Tanook Hines will take a bulk off the targets, but the Trojans need a 3rd target for Maiava to trust. Dixon-Wyatt is talented, and he is wise beyond his years; he should be primed to thrive in that role right out of the gates. He also slots in as a great complement to the other two top targets.

When USC football faces Ohio State this season, the battle will contain dozens of very juicy plot points. One of the many fascinating angles on this game is how Lincoln Riley and new Ohio State offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will coach their quarterbacks, Jayden Maiava and Julian Sayin. College Sports Wire noted that Sayin is being challenged by Smith, his new coordinator in Columbus.
"Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin will be paramount to the Buckeyes' dreams of winning a national **** le this season, and head coach Ryan Day was asked about his development under new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Day spoke about how Smith's NFL background has seeped into what he has imparted onto Sayin this offseason.
"'I think he's liked the challenge of some of the things that Arthur is bringing to the table,' Day said at Big Ten Media Days. 'When you go from coaching Aaron Rodgers to a college quarterback, you can certainly imagine what that has been like for Arthur. Man, Julian keeps up. It's been fun to watch. Combine that with a quarterback who has the experience now. I mean, this is only the third time since I've been at Ohio State that we've had the same quarterback come back for a second year (as a starter). That's a big deal."
Ohio State gave Julian Sayin a new coordinator with NFL experience. USC has Lincoln Riley, the ultimate NFL quarterback developer in modern times. He has given the NFL Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray. Ohio State versus USC will in many ways be a battle of which offensive tactician can get the most out of his quarterback.

USC football needs a lot of things to happen if this season is going to come together perfectly. ESPN's Bill Connelly explored the "ifs" which need to emerge for the Trojans to achieve up to their expectations (and maybe even exceed them).
Connelly writes that USC's season can be special "If ... Jayden Maiava has pass catchers. Maiava is one of the most proven returning quarterbacks in the sport and should have a dynamite run game at his disposal thanks to backs Waymond Jordan and King Miller, and an experienced line. But of the seven players with at least 125 receiving yards last season, only sophomore wideout Tanook Hines returns. Transfer Terrell Anderson (NC State) will need to be an immediate hit, as will a few young, unproven options."
Tanook Hines is generally viewed and accepted as a USC receiver who will do well in 2026. The Terrell Anderson portal pickup has to hit. Other depth pieces in the wide receiver room have to become legitimate options who will demand attention and respect from opposing defenses. Part of the discussion here is that Dennis Simmons needs to develop depth at the wide receiver position. He has created stars at USC but not a lot of rooms in which there were four or five really good receivers. He had that in 2022 but hasn't matched that standard since. That's an important goal for USC this season. It could make the difference between this team being moderately good and very good, borderline great.

USC football plays Penn State this season. Nittany Lions Wire looked at PSU pass rusher Max Granville.
"Granville enrolled early at Penn State before a season ending injury caused him to miss the 2025 season. In his true freshman season however, he appeared in seven games, logging a tackle and a pass breakup. Since Granville can play in a hybrid role, many project that not only will he start at the "Leo" spot(off the edge/outside linebacker), but that he can rotate easily between both. He has the size and length to use his bend around offensive tackles but the lateral range to set the edge in a linebacker role. It is because of this versatility that Granville is expected to log double digit sacks."
Clearly, Max Granville is expected to be a high-impact player on the Penn State defense. What is tricky about USC's attempt to counteract him is that he could play different positions and line up at different spots on the field. Penn State can change up its defensive looks in an attempt to confuse USC quarterback Jayden Maiava. USC's offensive line ****** ignments need to be very clear. Communication at the offensive line before the snap has to be precise, consistent and well-integrated. USC is playing Penn State on the road, so the Trojans have to have a system in place for communicating signals which is reliable and won't create mix-ups. USC cannot allow Max Granville to make negative plays which throw a monkey wrench into the Trojans' offensive possessions.

Quarterback play is always paramount in modern college football, as opposed to past decades when the running game mattered most in the sport. This is true in the Big Ten. Fernando Mendoza, the starting quarterback for the **** le-winning Indiana Hoosiers last season, was picked No. 1 in this past NFL draft. This upcoming season, the best quarterbacks in college football reside in the Big Ten. Whoever comes out on top in the Big Ten will have a quarterback who proved to be the best in college football.
Here is my ranking of the top five quarterbacks in the Big Ten:
Dante Moore shone last season, and just like last year, he was in conversations for being the best quarterback in college football. Moore threw for 2733 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He is dangerous in the pocket and an underrated athlete. Last year, he made the most of having great weapons and a great run game, helping lead Oregon's prolific offense to a college football playoff berth. This season, he enters with more continuity and a deeper set of weapons at each of the skill positions. I expect Moore to have a big season and end the year off being the undisputed #1 overall pick just like Fernando Mendoza.
Sayin's season last year was incredible, and he was extremely efficient. He had all the resources to be in that position with weapons, Jeremiah Smith, and Carnell Tate, but he still maximized his opportunity as a freshman starter. He ended the year with 3323 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. The connection he has with Jeremiah Smith is already a proven one, and he showed he can run the offense even better than Will Howard did the year prior. However, as expected from most freshmen, under the bright lights, he did fall short in the College Football Playoff vs the Miami Hurricanes and in the Big Ten championship vs the Indiana Hoosiers. Although his season was special, he still has more room to grow. If he takes that next step, the Ohio State Buckeyes will have another national **** le trophy in their case.
Jayden Maiava still does not get the credit he deserves for how good he truly was last season. In his first season as a starting quarterback, he led the Trojans' offense to being a top unit in the country. Lincoln Riley's offense was dangerous and high scoring because of how good and confident Maiava was last season. Maiava threw for 3431 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Maiava is a gun slinger, and he takes a lot of shots, but playing more under control would do wonders for his perception and draft stock. If he can have a similar season, with fewer interceptions and showcase his running ability more, there is reason to believe he can be one of the first quarterbacks taken in this next draft. The success of the Trojans this year falls on Maiava's back, but I am confident he will take a step forward and not back in year 2.

CHICAGO (AP) — The expectations are not new for Lincoln Riley or Southern Cal. He faced them as a first-time head coach at Oklahoma before arriving at USC, and the Trojans have faced them nearly every year for generations.
Still, in Riley's five years at USC, those expectations have perhaps never been higher than they are this fall. With more than a dozen contributors returning, including star quarterback Jayden Maiava, the country's top-ranked freshman class and a handful of impact transfers, a lot of the pieces that were missing during the first few years of Riley's tenure have now fallen into place, on paper at least.
"It's what it's supposed to feel like here," Riley said Tuesday at Big Ten football media days. "I've said this multiple times: I mean, the only two places that I've been a head coach at were blue-blood schools that have the highest of expectations. Honestly, I've really not known anything different. We're a product of our own experiences. That's been mine.
"Every year, I expect to win. I expect us to win. I expect us to compete for and win championships. That doesn't change. I certainly will give you what has changed: We're more equipped than at any point in the previous few years. That's not a hope or wish, those are facts. There's a lot of facts to back that up."
Riley cited institutional alignment including NIL support and a new $200 million practice facility, the addition of new defensive coordinator and longtime TCU head coach Gary Patterson and the overall depth of talent on the roster among his reasons for optimism that he can get USC back to where it is used to being.

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava enters the 2026 season as one of the top signal callers in college football. However, the accolades that Maiava has received go beyond the field of play.
This week, Maiava was nominated for the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Much of Maiava's nomination is due to the youth football camp that he hosted in his home state of Hawaii this spring.
"For Maiava, giving back to the community that raised him is deeply personal," USC wrote in a press release. "In June of 2026, he returned to Honolulu's Pālolo Valley where he hosted a free youth football clinic for more than 350 local children ages 6 to 14, transforming a day of football instruction into a meaningful event centered on mentorship, inspiration and opportunity. Throughout the clinic, Maiava taught football fundamentals while emphasizing teamwork, perseverance and the importance of believing in yourself despite adversity, drawing from his own journey from the Pālolo Valley to the highest levels of the sport. Extending his impact beyond the field, proceeds from event t-shirt sales were donated to Aloha 1st Athletics, a local nonprofit dedicated to leadership, character development and mental health support through sports, reinforcing his commitment to investing in the next generation and strengthening the community that shaped him. Above all, Maiava encouraged attendees to lead with integrity, make a positive impact on those around them and pursue excellence in football, academics, faith and everyday life.
"Beyond his work in Hawaii, Maiava has consistently dedicated his time to serving communities throughout Los Angeles, partnering with organizations focused on food insecurity, youth development and community outreach. He has volunteered multiple times with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, helping sort and pack thousands of pounds of fresh produce for families in need, including supporting relief efforts for residents displaced by the January 2025 wildfires.
"On the field, USC returns the nation's top quarterback in Maiava. The 2025 All-Big Ten Third Team quarterback led the nation with a 91.2 QBR and has 31 career starts. As USC's starting quarterback, Maiava started in all 13 games for the Trojans in 2025. He completed 265-of-403 passes (65.8%) for 3,711 yards and 24 TDs with 10 INTs, plus he rushed for 157 yards on 54 carries (2.9 avg.) and 6 TDs. He also recorded 1 tackle and 1 forced fumble (one of two quarterbacks in the FBS to do so in 2025).

Yastika Bhatia on Sunday became the first woman to score a Test century at the Home of Cricket as India closed in on a famous victory over England in the historic first-ever Women’s Test at Lord’s.
While vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was unfortunate to be caught down the leg side off Lauren Bell for 70 (130b, 9x4, 1x6), the less-fancied left-hander Yastika produced a sublime maiden Test hundred, scoring 113 off 158 ****** with 14 fours, as India declared at 341 for seven shortly before tea.
The visitors set England a daunting target of 457.
England, who had been bowled out for 170 in their first innings, ended Day Three reeling at 130 for six, still needing 327 runs with only four wickets in hand.
India’s seamers once again led the charge. Kranti Gaud (2-40), fresh from her first-innings five for 37 that made her the first woman to claim a Test five-wicket haul at Lord’s, struck twice early. She bowled Tammy Beaumont for a firstball duck in the opener’s farewell Test before removing former captain Heather Knight (13), who was caught behind by Richa Ghosh after being given a guard of honour by the Indian players following her retirement announcement on Saturday.
Gaud has figures of seven for 77 in the match. Sayali Satghare (2-19) provided excellent support, trapping Maia Bouchier (2) lbw before claiming another wicket.
Earlier, Yastika produced an innings to remember.
Resuming on her overnight 39, the 25-year-old enjoyed an early reprieve when a Lauren Bell delivery clipped her leg stump without dislodging the bails. She responded immediately by driving Bell straight down the ground for four and soon completed her second Test fifty. Batting with elegance and ****** urance, the Baroda wicketkeeper unfurled crisp cover drives, authoritative pulls and deft late cuts while using her feet confidently against the spinners.
On 91, she struck back-to-back boundaries off Issy Wong before nudging a single to deep extra cover to bring up a landmark maiden Test century.

India Women moved to the brink of a historic maiden Test victory at Lord's after a dominant third day, powered by Yastika Bhatia's record-breaking maiden century before the bowlers reduced England to 130/6 in pursuit of an improbable 457-run target.
With just four wickets separating them from scripting history at the Home of Cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur's side ended the day firmly in control despite a spirited lower-order resistance from Amy Jones and Mady Villiers.
Resuming Day 3 with a healthy first-innings lead, India continued to pile on the runs despite England enjoying a better opening session with the ball. Lauren Bell removed Smriti Mandhana (70) early before also dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues. Sophie Ecclestone then trapped Harmanpreet Kaur lbw as England briefly clawed their way back into the contest.
However, Yastika Bhatia remained unfazed. Displaying remarkable composure and elegant strokeplay, the left-hander brought up her maiden Test century to become the first-ever woman to score a Test hundred at Lord's. Her memorable knock of 113 off 158 ***** also became the highest score by an Indian woman in the third or fourth innings of a Test match.
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone fought tirelessly and completed her fourth five-wicket haul in Women's Tests, but lacked support from the other end as India continued to dominate.
Following Bhatia's departure, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh injected fresh momentum into the innings with a brisk unbeaten 50 off 52 ***** , taking the attack to the England bowlers. With India's lead swelling beyond 450, captain Harmanpreet Kaur declared the innings at 341/7, leaving England with a mammoth 457-run target to survive or chase down.
India's bowlers wasted little time in tightening their grip on the contest.
Debutant Kranti Gaud and Sayali Satghare produced another outstanding new-ball spell, removing openers Tammy Beaumont and Maia Bouchier inside the opening four overs. Beaumont's dismissal also marked the end of her international career, while former captain Heather Knight, playing her final Test before retirement, was later dismissed by Kranti Gaud and received a touching guard of honour from the Indian team as she walked off.
England's problems deepened when Sneh Rana bowled Nat Sciver-Brunt with a beauty before Sayali breached Alice Capsey's defence, reducing the hosts to 59/5.
Just when India appeared set to wrap up the match on the third evening itself, Amy Jones and Mady Villiers mounted a determined fightback. The duo stitched together a resilient 67-run partnership, frustrating the Indian attack and briefly keeping England's hopes alive.
The stand was eventually broken in spectacular fashion as Richa Ghosh pulled off a stunning close-in catch at silly point to dismiss Villiers off Sneh Rana's bowling. Jones continued her resistance, bringing up a gritty half-century, but England still finished the day in deep trouble at 130/6, requiring another 327 runs with only four w

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (83, 108b, 11x4, 1x6), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (58, 121b, 7x4) and seasoned allrounder Deepti Sharma (57, 87b, 7x4) struck resolute fifties as India posted 285 before pacer Kranti Gaud's early breakthrough left England at 21 for one on an engrossing opening day of the historic first-ever women's Test at Lord's.
After opting to bat, India looked set for a much bigger total at 190 for three but suffered a collapse, losing seven wickets for 95 runs.
England dominated the final session, taking the last four wickets for just 11 runs in 42 ***** . Leftarm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (368) finished with three wickets, including the final three, as India were bowled out in 74.5 overs.
India struck back late when pacer Kranti Gaud trapped opener Tammy Beaumont (2), playing the final Test of her career, lbw with a sharp inswinger. Gaud nearly dismissed Heather Knight too, but India declined a review that balltracking later showed would have hit the stumps. Maia Bouchier was unbeaten on 17 and Knight on one at stumps.
Earlier, England made the perfect start. Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer struck inside the opening seven overs, removing Shafali Verma for a duck and Yastika Bhatia (12). Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues (35) rebuilt with a brisk 64run stand before Rodrigues dragged Issy Wong onto her stumps.
Mandhana then combined with Harmanpreet in an 89-run fourthwicket partnership that steadied India after a shaky start. The lefthander played with characteristic fluency, peppering the off-side with elegant drives and also launching Ecclestone for six. However, she fell for 83, edging Wong behind while chasing a wide delivery.
Harmanpreet, under scrutiny after India's group-stage exit at the Women's T20 World Cup, responded with a patient half-century despite battling cramps. Soon after Mandhana's dismissal, she was undone by debutant off-spinner Mady Villiers, who picked up her maiden Test wicket with a delivery that drifted and turned through the gate.
Richa Ghosh (13) failed to make an impact, but Deepti's composed knock and a 46-run stand with Sneh Rana kept India afloat before another collapse ended the innings.
Brief Scores:
India 285 (Mandhana 83, Harmanpreet 58, Sharma 57) lead England 21-1 by 264 runs.

India and England shared the honours on an engrossing opening day of the historic first-ever women's Test at Lord's, with the visitors posting 285 before reducing England to 21/1 at stumps on Friday.
After England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and chose to field, India appeared well placed for a much bigger total thanks to impressive half-centuries from Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma. However, a late collapse ensured England regained control before the close of play.
The hosts then negotiated 11 overs in fading light but lost opener Tammy Beaumont cheaply, leaving the match finely balanced heading into Day 2.
India endured a shaky start after losing Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhatia early, but Smriti Mandhana once again showcased her class with a fluent innings of 83 off 108 **** . The left-hander was positive from the outset, driving elegantly through the covers and punishing anything overpitched. She struck 11 fours and a six while stitching together crucial partnerships that helped India recover from the early setbacks.
Jemimah Rodrigues looked comfortable during her brief stay, adding a valuable stand with Mandhana before throwing away a promising start.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur then joined Mandhana to steady the innings with an important 89-run partnership. While Mandhana played the aggressor, Harmanpreet anchored the innings with a patient 58 off 121 deliveries, ensuring India remained in a commanding position through the afternoon session.
At 190/3, India looked set to cross the 350-run mark. But Mandhana's dismissal shifted the momentum dramatically.
England's spinners, led by Sophie Ecclestone, exploited the ageing ball brilliantly. Ecclestone extracted sharp turn and bounce to finish with 3/68, while debutant Mady Villiers made an immediate impact as India slipped from a position of strength.
With wickets falling regularly around her, Deepti Sharma produced a composed knock under pressure. The experienced all-rounder compiled a valuable 57 from 87 **** , striking seven boundaries and guiding India to a competitive 285 before becoming the last batter to fall in the 75th over.
England had only 11 overs to negotiate before stumps and suffered an early setback when Kranti Gaud dismissed Tammy Beaumont for just two. Maia Bouchier looked **** ured during her unbeaten 17, while captain Heather Knight remained unbeaten on one as England closed the day on 21/1, trailing India by 264 runs.
India: 285 all out in 74.5 overs (Smriti Mandhana 83, Harmanpreet Kaur 58, Deepti Sharma 57; Sophie Ecclestone 3/68, Issy Wong 2/41)
England: 21/1 in 11 overs (Maia Bouchier 17*, Heather Knight 1*; Kranti Gaud 1/8)

It's been seven years since one of the most memorable knockouts in UFC history — and for now, the fastest.
In the featured fight on the main card at UFC 329, which took place July 6, 2019, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Jorge Masvidal put away Ben Askren in 5 seconds to set the new promotional standard for fastest finish.
Masvidal went straight to the center of the cage and launched a flying knee, and it was on the ******* on. Askren, a former champion with Bellator and ONE Championship, never had lost a fight until then, let alone been put away. He came in 19-0 after a win in his UFC debut over ex-welterweight champ Robbie Lawler earlier in 2019.
But after Askren was starched by Masvidal, he fought just once more in the UFC – a submission loss to Demian Maia – before he left the sport. He boxed Jake Paul in 2021, but was knocked out in the first round. Most notably, though, he had a medical emergency a year ago that left him in a coma for more than six weeks, but his miraculous recovery continues, and may even continue to include competition.
For Masvidal, the win was in the midst of a one-year superstar run that saw him finish Darren Till, Askren and Nate Diaz – the latter of which won him the inaugural BMF ******* le. But after that, he lost four straight in the UFC and is inactive in MMA. He's competed in boxing, grappling and has his own promotion.

Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans need to finally display dominance in the Big Ten, the best conference in college football. The talent gap between USC and other top teams in the Big Ten is not great. USC has the No. 1 recruiting class and made a huge improvement on the defensive staff with the hiring of Gary Patterson. This is the season for USC to match the standard the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Indiana Hoosiers have set.
In a recent article, ******* yst Brad Crawford projects the national ******* le winner to be a Big Ten team for a fourth straight season. He also names three other Big Ten teams that should be in contention for a playoff berth this season:
"USC, Washington and Michigan shouldn't be ignored, either. It would not surprise me if at least two Big Ten teams reached the semifinals."
The Trojans have a younger team this season, but they brought in some of the best young freshmen in the country. Names like Mark Bowman and Luke Wafle can be key contributors early. Starting quarterback Jayden Maiava should take a step forward from a stellar season last year. The Trojans' run game will be elite with King Miller and Waymond Jordan, as will their passing game. Gary Patterson is leading a defense full of talent. The Trojans have all the resources necessary to make a College Football Berth.

Most years in college football, it is evident what a great quarterback can do for a team with a lot of obstacles. Demond Williams is as talented as they come, and this season, he will need to be at his best for the Washington Huskies to achieve at a high level.
In a recent article, Roman Tomashoff discusses what will be the biggest factors for the Washington Huskies to have success this season. Here is what he had to say:
"Over Fisch's first two years, the Huskies have been looking to find more success away from Husky Stadium, and the October 3 matchup with the Trojans will be a critical measuring stick to see if Washington can overcome the road woes that have plagued the young and somewhat inexperienced rosters over the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Finding a way to win at least one of those three games starts with Williams, after the Huskies averaged 9.3 points per game and 4.3 yards per play in their four losses last year. Fisch has been vocal about his junior quarterback needing to step up in the big moments, which will be critical as the Huskies search for new playmakers to step up after running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston moved on to the NFL."
The two biggest obstacles for the Huskies this season will be placed right in front of quarterback Demond Williams Jr. He will decide whether or not this team goes as far as they can. On the road for their toughest matchups, Demond Williams Jr. will have to play like a Heisman candidate. The same will be said for the Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava. Both quarterbacks will be vital to their teams' success.

England Women have announced a 15-player squad for their one-off Test against India, which will mark the team's historic maiden women's Test match at Lord's Cricket Ground. The squad includes five uncapped players as England prepares for the landmark fixture.
Star all-rounder Alice Capsey is expected to make her Test debut against India. The right-handed batter has already represented England in 89 limited-overs internationals and is among the most exciting young talents in the women's game. Cricketing prodigy Tilly Corteen-Coleman is also in contention for a place in the playing XI, while Durham all-rounder Mady Villiers, Grace Potts and Ellie Threlkeld are the other uncapped players named in the squad.
England's current T20 captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, has been named to lead the side for the historic encounter. However, her availability remains subject to fitness as she leads the T20 squad from the sidelines in the ongoing T20 World Cup with a calf strain. The four-day Test is scheduled to begin on July 10, just four days after the World Cup final.
Emma Lamb and Issy Wong also remain in contention for selection. Meanwhile, Sophia Dunkley, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Ryana MacDonald-Gay are among the notable omissions despite featuring in England's most recent Test appearance against Australia at the MCG during the 2024-25 Women's Ashes.
Tammy Beaumont is another notable inclusion in the squad. The 35-year-old has yet to feature for England in any format.
"We have selected a strong Test squad under the leadership of Nat Sciver-Brunt for what will be another historic few days at Lord's for women's cricket," Clare Connor, the ECB's managing director of women's cricket, said.
"Test cricket is a rare and wonderfully challenging experience in the women's game and I know how proud our players are to represent England in this format. For the 11 women who will get the chance to be the first to enjoy that feeling at Lord's, it will be a moment to savour," she added.

USC football plays Oregon this season, in what is the most important game of the Trojans' campaign. When USC's offense takes the field, it will need to account for Oregon's Koi Perich. ESPN has more on the Ducks' star newcomer:
"Oregon didn't need many portal additions, but landing Perich was a major move after Dillon Thieneman departed for the NFL. The former Minnesota standout fills the Ducks' biggest defensive need at safety and helps preserve the playmaking identity that fueled their CFP run. He projects as an immediate impact player in Oregon's secondary under Chris Hampton.
"Perich arrives with proven production, recording 128 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles and a sack over two seasons while earning consecutive All-Big Ten honors. At 6-1 and 200 pounds, he brings a strong blend of range, physicality and coverage instincts that fits the star/rover role in Oregon's defense. He is versatile enough to support aggressive pressure packages while still functioning as a reliable last line of defense. Alongside Aaron Flowers and Brandon Finney Jr., he strengthens Oregon's secondary into one of the more complete units in the country."
USC's offense made far too many mistakes and left far too many points on the field against Oregon last season. The Trojans obviously want their defense to be better in 2026 than it was against Oregon in 2025, but in order for USC to have its best chance of winning, the Trojans might need to hang over 40 points on the Ducks. Jayden Maiava will have to keep an eye on Koi Perich and make sure the new Duck isn't able to pull any tricks in the UO secondary.
