The "big positive" of a free week has helped align Motherwell's new-look squad with the club's principles, says ****** istant coach Max Rogers.
An attempt to qualify for the Conference League meant the Fir Park side were playing three games a week for much of the start of their season.
Despite that, Alfred Johansson's men have still been able to collect eight points from their opening five league matches.
After a 1-0 loss at Rangers last time out, Motherwell have had nine days to recover and train before Tuesday's visit of Aberdeen.
"It was obviously such a hectic start, an enjoyable one with the European games and one that we all wanted," Rogers said. "But with that free week, we had plenty of time to rest and train.

Unai Emery will make late decisions on Matty Cash and Johan Manzambi ahead of Aston Villa's clash with Nottingham Forest.
Cash missed Villa's Champions League win over Club Brugge with what Emery described as a "small injury".
"It is difficult, but we will train now in the afternoon, and we will check him in case he is getting better," Emery said when asked about Cash.
"It is a small injury, and he needed a few days [resting], and today we will test him."
Manzambi, meanwhile, is closing in on his Villa debut after returning to training with the squad this week.

BERLIN (AP) — Record 3-point shooting helped France cruise into the quarterfinals of the women's FIBA World Cup.
France broke a three-day old record, making 22 3-pointers in its 111-56 win over Nigeria on Monday. The French team topped the 20 3-pointers that ****** an hit in its opening win over Mali.
Gabby Williams led the way making six of her eight 3-point attempts. Marine Johannes hit five as France was 22-for-40 from behind the arc.
Migna Toure's 3-pointer with 5:45 left was France's 21st of the game to top ****** an's record. She said she had no idea that France was even close to a record.
"I didn't know we broke the record, to me it was just a corner 3," Toure said.

New Zealand captain Ardie Savea has been ruled out of the fourth Test against South Africa with a shoulder injury.
Savea was forced off just half-an-hour in to the third Test in Johannesburg after coming up in serious pain following a clearout from Jasper Wiese.
The No 8 struggled to hold his right arm up and was pictured in a sling after a 29-24 defeat.
Savea had scored twice in an excellent start to the game, and his absence is a major blow to Dave Rennie as the All Blacks seek to draw the series with victory in Baltimore next Saturday.
"Yes, [it's a] shoulder injury," Rennie confirmed. "Not sure if it's dislocated, but he certainly won't be travelling to the States.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa and New Zealand fly together to Baltimore on Sunday to conclude their epic rugby test series without key players Cheslin Kolbe and Ardie Savea.
Both suffered series-ending injuries on Saturday as the world champion Springboks beat the All Blacks 29-24 and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the four-test series.
Kolbe, South Africa's flawless goalkicker in the series, broke his jaw when he was run over by Luke Jacobson, and Savea, the All Blacks captain, possibly dislocated his right shoulder in a clearout by Jasper Wiese. Also, New Zealand center Quinn Tupaea damaged his MCL.
Neither team planned to replace them in the squad for the final match next Saturday at the NFL home of the Baltimore Ravens.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Enos Mafokate, South Africa's first Black show jumping champion and veteran equestrian, has died at the age of 80, his family announced on Thursday.
Mafokate broke racial barriers in a sport that was dominated by white riders during South Africa's decades of apartheid. He was widely known as "Kgosi ya Dipere," a Sesotho language phrase which translates to "King of Horses."
"His journey was shaped by several leading figures in South African equestrian sport who recognised his extraordinary ability and, at critical moments, supported him as he challenged the racial barriers of the time," his family said in statement.
Mafokate started out as a stablehand. He won his first riding competition in 1963 but the country's segregation laws prevented him from taking part in further competitions until 1975.
In 1980, he was the first Black South African man to compete internationally as a show jumper, placing fifth out of 31 riders at the Royal International Horse Show at Wembley.

Sept 2 (Reuters) - Everyone knows Wall Street calls a 20% drop in a major index a bear market. But what do you call it when the index posts big gains and losses practically every day and is still way up ‌for the year?
That question is testing the limits of the market's most familiar vocabulary and prompting some to question whether a term like bear market ‌really applies when tech indexes are red hot and constantly gyrating.
"It's kind of lazy nomenclature to be using on things that are that volatile," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth.
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index, a benchmark for chip stocks, and South Korea's tech-heavy KOSPI both entered bear markets in July, based on the traditional measure. But even at their troughs, the indexes were still up 46% and 25%, respectively, for the year, thanks to triple-digit percentage gains over the past year.

The 3x3 league co-founded by former UConn women's basketball greats Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier continues to thrive as the premier offseason domestic league for WNBA stars.

Motherwell have signed midfielder Dylan Levitt from Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old, capped 13 times by Wales, has penned a two-year deal at Fir Park with Motherwell holding the option for a further year.
Levitt came through the Manchester United academy and is a familiar face in Scottish football, having previously played for Dundee United and Hibernian.
"Dylan will be a player well-known to our support," Alfred Johansson said.
"We have recruited from leagues across the globe this summer, but bringing someone in who has ample experience in this division is also really important. Dylan has played almost 100 games in the Scottish Premiership, so he knows exactly what's needed.

The Springboks relied on a masterclass of goalkicking by Cheslin Kolbe — seven from seven off the tee — to win the second test 33-26 after New Zealand outscored them on tries 4-3.
World champion South Africa dropped the first test in Johannesburg and hasn't lost consecutive tests at home on Erasmus' watch — since 2018 — and he was relieved they got back into a series in which they started as the heavy favorite.
"Of course I felt the pressure, and the players will tell you I felt the pressure. I try not to put it on them but I was nervous," Erasmus said.

JOHANNESBURG: A top State Department official has hit out at China for what **** ysts are calling "the China shock wave" effect now crippling African economies.
African manufacturing is reportedly being battered by a surge of Chinese imports. It's a triple whammy — China takes raw materials, including critical minerals, from the continent and floods Africa with state-subsidized products. And Beijing isn't importing anywhere near an equal amount of African products.
The China Global South Project reported that in 2025, Chinese exports to Africa hit $225 billion in value, whereas imports from Africa were roughly only half that — $123 billion.

Tonight's White Sox starter, Luis Castillo, was pretty darn good until he wasn't. From 2019-2025, an ERA of 3.48 and a bWAR of 21.7. This year, something's gone off, I dunno what it is; his fastball's ticked down a notch or two, maybe that's it. Happens to all of us eventually. He throws it at around 95 now, with a slider/sinker/change. The slider's effective when it's working.
If you're like me, you think "wait, didn't Luis Castillo play for the Twins for awhile?" Yes, he did — that was a DIFFERENT Luis Castillo. The Twins one was a middle infielder and former All-Star/Gold Glover who was with the Twins in 2006/part of 2007. Mid-2007, the Twins traded him to the Metropolitans for Sweet Drew Butera. That experience was so groovy, the Twins later traded Johan Santana to the Mets for gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I don't know what myrrh is and neither do you. Here is the Twins' Luis Castillo:
So, we went to our first Twins game in a few years last week. It was four of us – Mrs. James had been given four free tickets by a season-ticket holder who was gonna be out of town (taking a kid to college). We asked two semi-retired friends if they wanted to come, and they said "sure."
One of those friends has trouble walking long distances, as Mrs. James does. So I asked here if anyone had some suggestions for a parking ramp that was convenient for people with mobility challenges. gintzer provided helpful information, and the parking situation worked out well, ***** ody had to walk too far. Thanks, gintzer!
After the game, we got in the wrong exit line, and were stuck there for awhile. But, not the end of the world. Our car can go into electric mode for situations like that, so we weren't burning gas. We listened to the radio, made jokes about the other cars/drivers, chatted about events in our lives, etc. Just what you'd want with your favorite friends.

Köln were helped massively by an Ísak Jóhannesson double in the first round of the DFB Pokal as they turned around a 1-0 deficit to defeat Wurzburger Kickers 2-1.
Substitute Linton Maina provided the key ***** ist to the winner in the DFB Pokal to see the Billy Goats into the second round.
New Köln signing and returnee to the side Ellyes Skhiri made an appearance in Wurzburg after being substituted in the 74th minute.

Aug 26 (Reuters) - MSCI's global equities gauge barely rose on Wednesday after U.S. inflation data came in hotter than expected while investors waited for results from AI heavyweight Nvidia, and oil prices settled lower after a choppy session.
A senior ‌Iranian source said on Wednesday that Iran and Oman are still working on the details of an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz, a ‌vital energy conduit. Earlier, Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the two countries had agreed on how to share the waterway and its revenues. However, the Guards' spokesperson said the strait would not open unless the U.S. met Tehran's conditions.
Meanwhile, data showed annual U.S. inflation unexpectedly held steady in July and was well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target for the 65th straight month. Separate government data showed consumer spending decelerating modestly in July while personal incomes rose faster than inflation.
On Wall Street, the three main indexes closed slightly lower after the data.

Aug 26 (Reuters) - Global stocks edged up and weaker oil prices pushed bond yields lower on Wednesday on hopes that the vital Strait of Hormuz could soon reopen, while investors awaited U.S. inflation data and another pivotal earnings report from ‌AI heavyweight Nvidia.
Iran and Oman said they had discussed "a joint temporary navigational corridor" through the Strait of Hormuz and agreed to clear it ‌of mines, rejuvenating hopes for a breakthrough in the nearly six-month conflict that has roiled oil markets and stoked global inflationary worries.
Brent crude futures fell for a third straight day on Wednesday, sliding nearly 3% to $85.95 per barrel on the prospect of more supply coming through the Strait, which handled a fifth of the world's traded oil before the war.
That helped push short-term bond yields, sensitive to central bank interest rate expectations, lower.

The A's jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Carlos Cortes smacked a 2-run homer to right. Fast forward to the 5th, with the Twins offense still struggling against lefty rookie Gage Jump, Taj threw 9 pitches and all of them were strikes for the first immaculate inning in Twins history. This was surprising to me, I figured Johan Santana or somebody must have done it before, but I guess not.
Things were still looking great for Taj two outs into the 6th inning, but a single by Lawrence Butler, an RBI double by Tommy White, and an RBI single by Donovan Walton pushed their lead to 4 runs.
The one hit the Twins had in the first 6 innings against Jump was a pop up that landed 5 feet from the pitcher's mound in the 4th. I'm not sure how this is considered a hit, but it does help Royce Lewis' batting average, I guess. In the top of the 7th, Royce got himself a "real" hit with a line drive to left. One out later, Kaelen Culpepper doubled to bring in the Twins first run. Then a Brooks Lee double put two in scoring position for Victor Caratini, who grounded out for an RBI to make it a 2-4 game. The final chance for the Twins tonight came with 2 on and 2 out for Luke Keaschall, but he struck out looking to end the threat.
To add injury to insult, Buxton had to leave the game after appearing to aggravate his hip chasing down a ball in the gap in the 7th inning.
In the standings, the Twins sit at 64-69 and may fall to 3 games back in the wild card hunt. Also, the Royals have won 9 straight somehow.

Genoa sporting director Diego Lopez has been suspended until 8 September for his conduct following Saturday's defeat to Napoli.
According to Il Fatto Quotidiano, Serie A disciplinary judge Gerardo Mastrandrea found that Lopez improperly entered the pitch at full time despite not being listed on the matchday sheet, repeatedly contested a refereeing decision while adopting an aggressive attitude, continued those protests in the dressing room area and briefly prevented the referee from closing his own dressing room door.

1.FC Köln were given an early scare by Würzburg but eventually demonstrated their class to secure a 2-1 comeback victory in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.
The Bundesliga side looked the better team for much of the opening stages, but it was Würzburg who took a shock lead after just 18 minutes. Full-back David Abrangao found a way past Köln goalkeeper and captain Marvin Schwäbe to put the hosts 1-0 ahead.
The goal came somewhat against the run of play, leaving René Wagner's side with plenty of work to do if they wanted to avoid an early DFB-Pokal exit.
Köln continued to push for an equaliser but had to wait until the second half to get their reward. After 62 minutes, midfielder Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson finally broke through for the Bundesliga outfit, converting after being set up by Ragnar Ache to make it 1-1.
The Iceland international was not finished, however. Fifteen minutes later, Jóhannesson struck again to complete the comeback and put Köln 2-1 ahead.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Four suspects in the killing of former world champion boxer Zolani Tete were arrested, South African police said Monday.
Tete was in his car outside his home last week when men wearing balaclavas opened fire, police said. A woman who was in the vehicle was injured and has since been hospitalized.
The shooting took place at Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, according to the police. Tete was arriving at his residence and waiting for the gate to open when he was ambushed by two armed suspects.
Police said one of the suspects arrested two days ago was expected to appear in court on Monday, while the other three would appear on a later date.
Tete held the World Boxing Federation flyweight **** le from 2007 to 2008 and the World Boxing Organization bantamweight **** le in 2017 and 2019.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Swedish police are investigating whether an 18-year-old man who attacked students at a high school with a sword on Friday, killing one, was involved ‌in online communities promoting school violence, a police source said.
The attacker struck at a school ‌in the central Swedish town of ****** ersta, also severely injuring two teenage boys before being arrested by police. The parents of a 17-year-old girl told local newspaper ****** ersta-Posten that their daughter was killed in the attack.
Police are investigating whether a TikTok account that posted a picture of a sword 20 minutes before the ****** ault belonged to the suspect, the source told Reuters. According to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, the image appeared to have been taken in ‌a restroom at the school.
Before it ⁠was taken down on Friday, the month-old account contained videos that referred to two episodes of mass violence in Sweden and to Norwegian far-right mass murderer Anders ⁠Behring Breivik. One of the videos referenced a 2015 attack in which a masked swordsman killed a teaching ****** istant and two boys at a school in Trollhattan, western Sweden, before being shot dead by police.

Trade tensions weighed on the ‌Canadian dollar, which weakened 0.5% to C$1.3836 per dollar, after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, with Canada retaliating in kind.
With the dollar having slid broadly in recent days the euro was trading at $1.1665, down a touch on the day, but in sight of last week's three-month top.
Sterling was likewise marginally softer at $1.3628 but near its six-month high of $1.3675 also hit on Friday. The **** anese yen was a touch weaker at 159.25 per dollar.

Tammy Abraham was withdrawn after slipping awkwardly against Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend and there has been no official update on his condition since. Alejandro Garnacho has not featured since sustaining a facial injury in a friendly on 5 August and his clearance through concussion protocols remains uncertain, though a place on the bench has not been ruled out.

Genoa director Diego Lopez claims they expected refereeing controversy in their 2-0 defeat to Napoli. 'All of Italy saw what happened today' in the controversial Kevin De Bruyne goal.
The game was still 0-0 at Marassi when Johan Vasquez stood in front of De Bruyne to shield the loose ball, but the defender went down when nudged from behind, allowing the Belgian to fire in undisturbed from seven yards.
Referee Marco Di Bello had a good view of the incident, put the whistle to his lips, and then took it out again when he saw the move was leading to a goal.
It was evaluated by VAR, who decided not to recommend an On-Field Review, as it was not considered to be a clear and obvious error.
Soon after, De Bruyne set up Antonio Vergara to score the second goal, as Napoli ran out 2-0 winners over Genoa.
