Saffie Osborne became the first female jockey to win a British Classic horse race while riding Highwayman in the St Leger on Saturday.
Highwayman, trained by Joseph O'Brien, was priced 11-1 and finished ahead of Enceladus and Amelia Earhart.
"I didn't have this on the bingo card for this week," Osborne told ITV Racing. "I didn't have a ride in the race on Monday morning, let alone one with a chance, and I can't thank so many people enough."
The St Leger, in its 250th year, is the world's oldest Classic. Osborne's historic moment follows Rachael Blackmore, who was the first female jockey to win the Grand National in 2021.
Osborne was handed the spare ride on Highwayman as reward for an impressive season. She moved into contention as the runners entered the long Doncaster straight.

The Jockey Club Gold Cup, which will headline next Friday's reopening day card at Belmont Park, has reportedly lost one of its biggest stars.
Daily Racing Form's David Grening reported Friday that 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers winner Sovereignty, who was targeting the Gold Cup coming off of his win in the Whitney last month at Saratoga, has officially been ruled out of the Grade 1, $1 million race.
Sovereignty developed an abscess in his left hind foot a little more than a week ago, which forced the reigning Horse of the Year to miss two planned workouts. Grening reported that trainer Bill Mott hopes to have Sovereignty return to the track by the middle of next week and plans to attempt to train the 4-year-old colt up to the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic, rather than having him race beforehand.

On Monday, Patrons walked out of the Saratoga Race Course for the final time this summer and crew members packed their gear as they closed out the 2026 racing season in Saratoga Springs.
The season saw 50 days of racing, including a 45-day summer meet and the five-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

Airing a Super Bowl is a bit like a presidential election.
It might come around every four years, but candidates – in this case, the four networks with the privilege and pockets to be in the broadcast rotation – are constantly jockeying and positioning themselves, especially as their turn nears.
That makes CBS' conundrum with Tony Romo even more precarious. Super Bowl 61 will return to ABC/ESPN for the first time in two decades to end the 2026 season on Feb. 14, 2027, but then CBS will officially be on the clock for February 2028, when it will host its first Super-Bowl broadcast since 2023.
Romo, the network's No. 1 game ****** yst who partners with Jim Nantz, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) and pleaded no contest Sept. 2 to three charges he faced from the incident, which occurred while in his native Wisconsin on July 23. The subsequent police officer bodycam footage became Internet fodder, as Romo failed his field sobriety test, told the officer who pulled him over he was "going to see grandma and grandpa" (his own parents) and had an open container in the passenger seat.
In his first public comment since the arrest, Romo said via a Sept. 1 statement posted to his Instagram account, "I own this completely." He also noted an over-reliance on alcohol stemming from a dependence on pain medication following his playing career.

Stocks took it as a gift. At noon, the S&P 500 had climbed just over 1%, the Nasdaq 1.4%, and the Dow tacked on 640 points for a 1.2% gain and its best session since Aug. 4. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 4.75% after spiking Wednesday.
The Fed's benchmark, the overnight rate it charges banks to borrow from each other, currently sits in a range of 3.50% to 3.75%, and markets have spent weeks bracing for it to go higher on Sept. 16. Higher rates make a boring government bond paying you nearly 5% look awfully good next to stocks so we can forgive the equity jockeys who have been deprived of good news for a few moons from getting a little giddy when Waller signaled he'd hold if August inflation behaves and knocked hike odds from 63.2% to 50.4%, per CME FedWatch. Even if those traders are rejoicing on what's basically now a coin flip.

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Chalk up another one who fell to the "Graveyard of Champions."
Saratoga Race Course has long been known as the track where some of horse racing's greatest legends suffered their most surprising losses. Saturday, another superstar was defeated at the Spa, as Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo could only muster a late-closing third in a Travers Stakes won by the inexperienced Leading Change, who was making just his third career start.
After winning the Derby and Belmont with similar late runs, Golden Tempo lingered at the back of the pack early in the Travers in company with his familiar rival, Renegade.
But unlike during the Triple Crown season, on Saturday the speed horses were able to hang on at the front of the field. Frontrunner Napoleon Solo held the lead deep into the stretch until the Brad **** -trained Leading Change, who sat second throughout the race under jockey Manny Franco, made his final surge to win by a half-length.
"The pace was slow, and I thought that was gonna be to our detriment," said Golden Tempo's trainer, Cherie DeVaux. "The horses in front of us are definitely quality horses … it didn't work out for us today."

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Jockey Manny Franco is honest about the fact he doesn't know his Travers Stakes mount all too well just yet.
But, it's only a matter of time.
He's also quick to mention what he does know about Leading Change, the undefeated Brad ****** trainee entered in Saturday's Travers, and what matters most as he prepares for the 10-furlong race.
"I don't know the horse, but I do my homework," Franco said of his mount in the $1.25 million race. "He's 2-for-2. It's a fresh horse going into the race."

Aug 18 (Reuters) - Anthropic's revolving credit facility is expected to exceed its roughly $10 billion target, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, as the AI lab prepares for what could be one of the biggest public listings on record.
Banks are jockeying for a piece of the expanded credit line, hoping the involvement will strengthen their case for a role in the IPO, Bloomberg said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Anthropic has asked the banks most active in arranging the credit facility to commit about $1.25 billion each, with a second tier of active lenders encouraged to offer around $1 billion, Bloomberg said. Commitments for less active roles would fall to about $750 million or less.
The talks are ongoing and Anthropic could decide to limit the size of the revolver to the target or even below, according to Bloomberg.
Anthropic, which confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering in June, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Aug. 8—PULLMAN — At first there was only silence, the kind of anticipatory stillness that can only mean something breathtaking is on the horizon. Washington State players from both sidelines, offensive players in crimson on the far end and defenders in white on the near side, held their breath as the ball fell back toward the earth, toward the corner of the end zone, where junior wideout Branden Ganashamoorthy was jockeying for position on a pass from quarterback Caden Pinnick.
The ball was a hair underthrown, so Ganashamoorthy adjusted his route accordingly, positioning himself against veteran cornerback Khamari Terrell. He let the ball hit him in the right arm, then cradled it against his body, securing it in the process. He stumbled forward with the ball intact, a one-handed catch.
Cougar players met the moment, perhaps the top individual highlight of WSU fall camp, which wrapped up its third day on Saturday afternoon. Ganashamoorthy jumped in the air with running back Maxwell Woods. He high fived receiver Tony Freeman. "Yeah, BG!"
"He's really progressed since spring ball," WSU coach Kirby Moore said.
Ganashamoorthy made that abundantly clear on Saturday, enjoying by far his best day of fall camp, perhaps the best individual day any of these Cougars have had thus far. On top of his long touchdown reception in one team period, he also made one sliding catch and two more touchdown receptions in 7-on-7 settings, putting on display the physical transformation that might have unlocked his sterling afternoon.

The MLB trade deadline is over and we're at the latter part of the 2026 baseball season, during which teams are either jockeying for postseason position, evaluating young prospects and other talent they recently acquired, and re-evaluating those held on to.
If you're 49-65 and have one of the worst records in baseball like the San Francisco Giants, then odds are the remainder of the season is an extended tryout period to see who will claim a starting spot, find a way into the batting lineup or even make next year's 40-man roster.
That's the direction the Giants are headed to next.
"We're going to get some looks at some younger players, and I think as much as anything, it's going to be an opportunity for us as a front office and a coaching staff to evaluate some of our players, and some of them are going to get some longer runways than they've had in the past," Giants general manager Buster Posey said in a radio interview on 97.5 FM.

After a hard-fought bidding war, NBC Sports is retaining media rights to the Preakness Stakes, Front Office Sports has learned.
NBC had been defending its rights to the second leg of racing's Triple Crown against bidders such as Fox Sports, Netflix, and Amazon, say sources. It's unclear how long the network's new deal is for.
Dan Illman, a spokesman for the Maryland Jockey Club, declined to comment. But sources say Maryland Governor Wes Moore and other dignitaries are planning a press conference for 12 p.m. ET in Annapolis on Wednesday, where it will be announced that NBC will continue to carry the race.
The Preakness drew its biggest audience since 2021 this past May, averaging 5.5 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. That was up 22% from 4.9 million in 2025.

The trade deadline is one of the most hectic days of the entire regular season for all ball clubs, whether you are a fan of a team that is already looking ahead to the next season for how they can improve or a team that is in the middle of a playoff race and hoping to see October baseball, it's a day where all of us are constantly checking MLBTradeRumors or refreshing our twitter feeds for the next Jeff Passan bomb to grace our timeline.
Coming off a series victory over the Cleveland Guardians where the Dbacks would end up going 10-6 from the start of the 2nd half to the last day before the deadline, there was hope among fans and players on the team that GM Mike Hazen would go ahead and be an aggressive buyer and fill the positional needs this team has shown to be lacking throughout 2026. What we got was…far from the outcome we had been hoping for to say the least.
With today being the last day for teams to make trades before the deadline at 6 PM EST, the notifications from the top baseball reporters were going off all day. We saw nearly every NL playoff hopeful make some kind of move to strengthen their rosters, especially the teams like the Padres, Phillies, Cubs and even Pirates who are all still jockeying for one of the 3 Wild Card spots. There were some rumors about the Diamondbacks being involved in discussions for players like Casey Mize of the Tigers, or Alec Burleson from the Cardinals, but that's where it always seemed to end at just a "discussion" and nothing being finalized.
I sat there watching the time tick away thinking "Alright, (Mike) Hazen will get something done before time is up,let him cook" and kept repeating that to myself, but once the final 10 to 15 minutes approached I got nervous that we might not see anything come to fruition, but right as I had that thought, the news finally came through and the Snakes made a move.
Brandon, Gabe and I planned to have a deadline special episode where we would discuss all the moves that were made for the Diamondbacks and who was dealt for the reinforcements that we were sure were on their way, but like a lot of other online we were quite disappointed to see that the only trade Mike Hazen would be was trading Daniel Eagan (#5 prospect), Sandro Santana (#26 Prospect) and a Player-To-Be-Named-Later (PTBNL) in exchange for Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbar. Noot did miss a good chunk of time to start the season due to injury so his .234/.333/.354 line with 3 HR and 16 RBI might not seem like the most exciting numbers to Dback's fans, but some of his underlying metrics give fans some more hope that he could be a solid addition for a team that is still well in the wild card race.
While the addition of Nootbar does at least improve the roster by bringing in a guy who has a solid walk rate and low chase % (also would mean we have a player who can slot in for Kepler should we hold onto that playoff spot), the Diamondbacks biggest needs going into the deadline was more Starting Pitching an

During the Spring and Summer, most of the Thoroughbred racing focus is on events like the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes, and Travers Stakes. All these races are restricted to three-year-olds and mostly males run in them. For every race that has colts contending for greatness and notoriety, there is a sister race for those wonderful three-year-old fillies. During the 2026 racing season, a fantastic filly named Counting Stars has been quite celestial and is shining as bright as any three-year-old currently, regardless of gender.
The grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks has long been a summer showcase for the three-year-old girls. Inaugurated in 1917, this mile and an eighth dance over the New York dirt has seen its fair share of fantastic fillies. The 2026 edition was a showdown between Kentucky Oaks (opening leg of the Triple Tiarra) winner Always A Runner and Acorn Stakes (third leg and sister to the Belmont Stakes) champ Counting Stars. As the race unfolded, it became more of a showcase for a fabulous female.
Breaking alertly under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Counting Stars immediately ******* umed the lead and rolled through some solid early fractions (23.86 opening quarter mile, 47.60 half mile). Sashaying to the top of the stretch in an almost effortless fashion, this daughter of Honor A.P. was suddenly challenged by her rival and Oaks winner Always A Runner. With an eighth of a mile to go, the two were running side by side and separated by a whisker. Suddenly, the Stars aligned and with an amazing comet-like burst of speed, this mercurial filly trained by Mark Casse left her rival eating kickback as she whisked towards the wire. At the sixteenth pole the race was over and Counting Stars cruised past the finish an emphatic 4 ¼ lengths ahead in Stakes record time (1:48.98).
"Coming into the race I was about as confident as you can be in this filly", says trainer Mark Casse. "At the eighth pole, I wondered if perhaps I was wrong and she's not as good as I think. Always a Runner is a very good horse so naturally I was a little concerned, but then she responded to the challenge with a huge effort down the lane".

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered and moved closer to 2,000 hits, and Merrill Kelly combined with two relievers on a three-hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Thursday night to take three of four.
The Diamondbacks and Padres are jockeying for second place in the NL West, well behind the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona popped back into a tie with San Diego, 14 1/2 games behind the idle Dodgers.
Arenado homered to left field off Yuki Matsui with two outs in the sixth, his 11th of the season and 364th of his 14-year career. He's six shy of becoming the sixth active player to reach 2,000 hits. Belgium's soccer governing body said Sunday afternoon that it was shocked that FIFA had allowed United States striker Folarin Balogun to play in Monday's World Cup Round of 16 game.
Balogun had been suspended for the game against Belgium (8 p.m. ET, Fox) after his straight red card in the 64th minute of the USMNT's Round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun was sent off after replay officials summoned referee Raphael Claus to the monitor after a play where Balogun stepped on the back of Tarek Muharemovic's leg as the two were jockeying for position.
Instead, that suspension was suspended for year just the day before the game.

Was video review improperly used to determine that United States striker Folarin Balogun deserved a red card for his foul on Bosnia and Herzegovina's Tarik Muharemović?
Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute of the USMNT's 2-0 win in the World Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night. As he and Muharemović jockeyed for position for a ball bouncing towards them, Balogun stepped on the back of Muharemović’s leg.
The step appeared accidental — Balogun was looking straight ahead at the time and was a bit off-balance. But slow-motion replays made the step look brutal. And it's an open question if those slowed-down replays should have been available to referee Raphael Claus as he decided to eject Balogun from the game and give him an ensuing one-game suspension.
Claus did not call a foul as the play happened in real time. The whistle only blew when the ball had gone out of play before Claus motioned for Bosnia and Herzegovina's training staff to come onto the field.
As Muharemović was on the ground in pain and Balogun was getting an apparent right leg cramp stretched out, video referees reviewed the play and VAR official Juan Soto told Claus to go to the monitor to look at the foul himself.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark didn’t play with DeWanna Bonner for long, but there’s clearly some bad blood between the former teammates. That bad blood came to a head Monday night, when an altercation between the two led to six technicals and an ejection during the Fever’s 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury.
The incident started with just under eight minutes left to play in the contest. While jockeying for position, Bonner and Clark got tied up. A whistle was blown and Bonner ripped herself away from Clark, who followed Bonner and appeared to exchange words with her former teammate.
Multiple players and officials got involved and things eventually reached a point where Clark was hit with a technical foul, her fifth of the season.
Clark was not happy about that call after the contest, calling it “ridiculous.”
"It's ridiculous, I got a technical for clapping. We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game I'm going to be suspended for if I'm going to get technicals for clapping."
