Jul. 23—BEMIDJI — Michael Bitzer has been tethered to Bemidji for a long time, even when he didn't know it.
It started in Moorhead's youth hockey program. He took the crease in games at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.
When the Sanford Center opened in 2010, the Spuds took a trip to Bemidji to watch a game against Colorado College. Two years later, Bitzer backstopped Moorhead to a Section 8AA championship in the same building.
While playing in the United States Hockey League, Bitzer committed to play for Bemidji State. His four-year career from 2014-18 included a Western Collegiate Hockey ***** ociation championship in 2017, along with a top 10 Hobey Baker Award finalist nod.
Now, Bitzer has built a life in Germany. He's preparing to enter his eighth professional season overseas. Still, the invisible string occasionally reels him back to the First City on the Mississippi.

The Houston Rockets' opponents for next season's NBA Cup have been revealed.
The Rockets will compete in West Group A, and are set to face the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz in the group play stage of the tournament. The group play games will take place every Friday from Oct. 30 through Nov. 27. If Houston advances past the group stage, it moves on to the tournament's elimination phase, which starts on Dec. 4 and ends with the championship game on Dec. 11.

The NBA Cup final will be held in Indianapolis in December, but if the Pacers want to play in it and return to the finals for the first time since 2023 they're going to have to get through a brutal group that includes the defending NBA champion New York Knicks.
On the same day the NBA announced that the NBA Cup Finals would be held at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 11, it also announced the ***** ignments for the group play portion of the Cup with three groups of five teams in each of the two conferences. According to a release, the teams were randomly drawn into groups of five on the basis of their 2025-26 records, and the Pacers' 19-63 mark following their 2025 NBA Finals run clearly made them vulnerable.
The other four teams in the East Group B with the Pacers are the defending champion Knicks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat. The Knicks beat the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals and the 76ers in the conference semifinals, so the Pacers will be playing three of the final four teams standing in the East playoffs. The Heat finished 10th in the East and were defeated by Charlotte in the play-in round, but they just added two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade with the Bucks that could shift the East's balance of power.
Home-away pairings were also announced. The Pacers will play the Knicks and 76ers at home and the Cavaliers and Heat on the road. NBA Cup group play games will be played each Friday from Oct. 30 to Nov. 27 and there will also be group play games on Thanksgiving week on Nov. 24 and 25. The NBA is making changes to the schedule and location for the NBA Cup Final.
The NBA revealed today that the final will move to the 9,100-seat Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The NBA Cup Final has been played in Las Vegas since the first edition in 2023. The game will also be moved from Tuesday night to Friday. The final has been on Tuesday the last two years, though it was on a Saturday night for its inaugural edition.
The game will remain exclusive to Prime Video.
“Hinkle Fieldhouse offers a special setting to capture the excitement and drama of the Emirates NBA Cup Championship,” said NBA Head of Global Events Kelly Flatow in a statement. “Playing the championship in an iconic basketball environment like this will further establish it as a signature moment on the NBA calendar.”
The NBA Cup is unique compared to every other major American professional club tournament other than the Super Bowl because it is played at a neutral site. That was an intentional decision, but it certainly decreased the passion of the crowd. For better or worse, part of what makes the NBA playoffs so special are home crowds. The outcome of these storylines is also increasingly becoming harmful to the growth of the sport. Given that women's professional sport continues to grow at historic rates, it is unfortunate that one of the biggest storylines is being told through a frame that is reviving harmful stereotypes about women athletes.

On Thursday, the WNBA said that it will not rescind Caitlin Clark's technical foul from Monday's Indiana Fever win over the Phoenix Mercury.
The Fever had appealed the technical foul with the league's offices. Clark will remain at five technical fouls on the season, three away from a mandatory one-game suspension.
Clark exited the Fever's 111-109 loss against the Mercury on Wednesday night with a back injury and did not return. That puts Clark's status into limbo for the Fever's Saturday date against the Los Angeles Sparks inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

After a frustrating 113-96 road loss against the Atlanta Dream at State Farm Arena on Sunday, the Indiana Fever (9-7) released their day-before injury report as the team returns to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a Monday night clash against the Phoenix Mercury (5-12) as part of a three-game homestand.
Per the Fever's listing, Caitlin Clark is listed as probable with back soreness. It's the 12th game in a row in which the two-time WNBA All-Star has been listed as probable on the Fever's day-before injury report.
Fortunately for Indiana, Clark is once again the lone name listed by the Fever on their report.
Despite the loss on Sunday afternoon, Clark posted another 26-point performance by shooting 11-of-18 from the floor and 3-of-7 from 3-point land. The third-year pro also added seven ******* ists, three rebounds, and one steal in her 34 minutes.
If the Fever upgrade Clark to available on Monday as expected, it will also mark the 12th straight game in which the former Hawkeye was listed as probable and then upgraded to available on the game-day injury report.

When asked which of the many hidden details throughout the pair of shoes is her favorite, the former Hawkeye legend pointed to the "C" pattern on the left shoe and the "2" pattern on the right as a clever, yet subtle intricacy she enjoys.
"I think the fact that the outside part is C's and the inside part is 2's, but you can only tell it close up," Clark said.
As she sports the kicks for the first time in action, Clark looks to propel Indiana to a fifth straight victory tonight against Atlanta as the two teams clash for the first of a back-to-back home-and-home series.
