The Iowa State men's basketball team's trip to the Phog in March 2027 is going to get an even bigger spotlight.
The Cyclones are slated to make one appearance on ESPN's "Big Monday" during the upcoming season, when they go on the road to Phog Allen Fieldhouse to face the Kansas Jayhawks on March 1, 2027. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT in Lawrence.
ESPN started its "Big Monday" showcase in 1987. This season, beginning Feb. 1, 2027, ESPN will highlight some of the top matchups in the ACC and Big 12 through the final Monday of the regular season. The Iowa State-Kansas game at Allen Fieldhouse will round out the "Big Monday" slate for the 2026-27 season.
Last season, the Cyclones and Jayhawks split the regular-season series. Kansas won the first meeting at Allen Fieldhouse, 84-63, on Jan. 13. The Cyclones comfortably evened the series with a 74-56 victory on Feb. 14 at Hilton Coliseum.
Kansas is coming off of a 24-11 season. It lost on a buzzer-beater in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to St. John's. The Jayhawks reloaded through the transfer portal and secured the No. 1 overall high school recruit. Freshman 6-foot-7 wing Tyran Stokes was the consensus top recruit for the 2026 class and he's already on the top of several 2027 NBA mock drafts.

Sophie Cunningham has become one of the most talked-about figures in women's basketball. Whether on or off the court, Cunningham's outspoken personality has built a large following for herself and has recently added a new platform to that reach.
The Indiana Fever guard launched a podcast called "No Hesitation" alongside trainer Drew Hanlen. Her debut episode was released on Thursday. During that episode, she addresses the storytelling path she believes the WNBA media should tread. Also, she highlights things she could do differently if she held certain governmental powers over the game.

So far in the season, Cunningham has averaged 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 ***** ists per game, demonstrating her central role to her team's success all-year-long. During the show, Cunningham touched on players' remuneration, the WNBA media coverage, and even the outgoing commissioner's office. An NFL-themed X page, Franco Vision, shares snippets from the conversation.
"We're always as players going to want more money, and as owners they're always not going to want to give it to you…"When it comes to media coverage, I think that we have good coverage now. Yes, it can always be better. Yes, it can be bigger."

Oklahoma City and USA Softball have broken ground on the Choctaw Nation Fieldhouse, a new indoor softball practice facility at Devon Park.
The 30,000-square-foot, split-level brick building is expected to help secure Devon Park as the home of the NCAA Women's College World Series beyond 2035, according to a news release
The facility will include two indoor practice infields, team locker rooms, and areas for sports medicine, player development and administration. An enclosed, climate-controlled connection will link the fieldhouse to the stadium, allowing staff, coaches and players to move between the buildings without exposure to weather.
The $21 million project is funded through the OKC 2025 Bond. The Oklahoma Department of Commerce contributed $8 million for stadium improvements, including new chairback seating, improved practice fields, upgraded sound system and protective features.
"This will be a premier softball performance training facility that continues to grow the softball community nationally," Public Works Director Debbie Miller said in a news release. "Our goal is for this to be designated as a United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee training site and to help secure Oklahoma City as the home of the NCAA Women's College World Series beyond 2035."

Dan Hurley's historically successful run with UConn men's basketball peaked in the spring of 2024, when his Huskies rampaged through the NCAA Tournament to clinch a second consecutive championship.
On Wednesday, CBS Sports released the latest installment of the publication's "Candid Coaches" series, asking 100 anonymous coaches to name the best college basketball team of the 21st century. Fueled by this outstanding postseason run, UConn's 2023-24 team was the most popular answer, with 17% of coaches choosing the Huskies and several highlighting Hurley's role in cultivating such historic dominance.
"Insanely dominant," one coach told CBS about the Huskies. "Five NBA players in the starting lineup. Best coach in the sport on the sidelines."
That ***** le run is part of an ongoing stretch of postseason excellence for UConn, as the Huskies reached their third national championship game in four seasons this past April before falling against Michigan. The 2025-26 Michigan team, fueled by a dominant frontcourt of Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson and Aday Mara, is tied for second place at 14% with the 2000-01 Duke squad. Other top answers include 2017-18 Villanova, 2006-07 Florida and John Calipari's Kentucky squads from 2011-12 and 2014-15.
For a group of reigning champions, the 2023-24 UConn squad was hardly a runaway favorite to make another national ***** le run, as Hurley needed to replace several key contributors, including star centers Adama Sanogo and wings Andre Jackson and Jordan Hawkins. The Huskies appeared somewhat mortal early on, letting a late lead against Kansas slip away at Allen Fieldhouse to kick off December before a stunning 15-point road loss at Seton Hall three weeks later.

Caitlin Clark has faced more than her share of on-court altercations with both players and officials, which has led to even the league in general getting plenty of backlash. In a recent face-off against the Wings, Clark and Paige Bueckers had an exchange, which got mixed reactions from fans.
Bueckers tried to purposefully foul Clark, not just once but twice which did not catch the attention of the officials. After the second attempt, Clark could be seen pulling her arm back forcefully which led to Bueckers yelling at her, telling her to calm down.
While the exchange was considered pretty hilarious by many fans, others pointed out that Clark has been the victim of such exchanges throughout this campaign. Candace Parker discussed the situation in a recent 'Post Moves' episode, where she admitted that she would have acted the same way Bueckers did.
"The lip-reading experts are saying Paige told Caitlin to calm down. But here's the thing. I kinda blame the refs a little bit because if you don't hear a whistle, and obviously Paige was trying to foul… She's fouling, and then she fouls again, and I feel that a little bit. But at the same time, the refs didn't call the first one. I would've been like Paige too." Candace Parker said.
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) looks to pass around Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd (35) and Dallas Wings guard Aziaha James (10) on Saturday, May 9, 2026, during the first half of the Fever's season opener game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

TORONTO — Kelsey Mitchell left the Indiana Fever's bench and headed to the locker room in the fourth quarter of the win over the Toronto Tempo because she started overheating, Fever coach Stephanie White said.
Scotiabank Arena, which is not the Tempo's typical home arena, was atypically warm on Tuesday night. It's the second-straight game the Fever have played in a warmer-than-usual arena, as State Farm Arena in Atlanta (not the Dream's typical home venue, either) was also unseasonably warm compared to the chilly Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis — all three NBA arenas, too.
"It seems like she just got overheated," White said. "I mean, this is two games in a row where we played in really, really hot environments, so all indications right now is that she was just overheated."
The Fever star, who tied a WNBA record with her 20th straight games scoring 20 or more points, checked out of the game for the final time with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter. She went back to the locker room in the fourth quarter and did not return to the bench for the rest of the game. She finished with 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting.

Why Fever's Stephanie White might have the 'toughest job in professional sports' originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Stephanie White was greeted with applause Friday night before the Indiana Fever defeated the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
It was a marked departure from White's reception in the Fever's win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday, before which White had delivered a fiery speech defending her players from a number of recent controversies.
White arguably has the toughest job in the WNBA. In a span of three years, the Fever has transformed from an afterthought into a contender whose entire regular-season schedule has been broadcast on national television.
Indiana's trajectory as a franchise, for better and for worse, changed when it was afforded the chance to draft Caitlin Clark. Since she returned to the Fever in 2025, White has had to navigate Clark's superstardom while keeping All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell engaged, and eliminating distractions prompted by Sophie Cunningham's clumsy comments about transgender participation in women's sports.

Phoenix Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts may not understand exactly what the Indiana Fever's Stephanie White has dealt with the past week or so, but he can empathize.
In a recent pregame interview, Tibbetts lamented the WNBA's frequent brushes with controversy, so many of them involving the Fever.
White has been criticized by the state's lieutenant governor after a postgame comment regarding the Chicago Sky's DiJonai Carrington. White gave an impassioned defense of her players before she was booed while being introduced the next game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Fever players also defended White, who received an ovation before Friday night's game against the New York Liberty.
"There are some things that our coaches have to deal with on a night-to-night level, and I feel sorry for those coaches," Tibbetts said Saturday.
"Some of things that Steph goes through, that is wrong. There is no other coach in professional sports that ... it's not fair. She was hired as a coach, and they've got a great team and they are dealing with stuff that doesn't really matter. That still ****** me off."

Caitlin Clark singles out Fever's unlikely hero after perfect shooting night originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers were the headliners at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday. Tyasha Harris became the Indiana Fever's unexpected difference-maker.
Harris came off the bench and scored 15 points in only 17 minutes during Indiana's 98-87 victory over the Dallas Wings. She attempted five shots, all from beyond the arc, and made every one of them. It was a perfectly efficient performance from a veteran whose value to the Fever has not always appeared in the box score. Afterward, Clark made sure Harris received recognition for everything she contributes.
"Ty is probably one of the best teammates I've had," Clark said. "She's always there supporting everybody, uplifting everybody. So it's really fun to see her kind of come into her own and thrive."
Harris' five 3-pointers provided a crucial boost on a night when the Fever needed help overcoming a halftime deficit. Clark carried the offense with 29 points and 10 ******* ists. Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points, while Aliyah Boston recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Caitlin Clark-Paige Bueckers duel revealed what separates Fever star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers delivered the superstar showdown everyone wanted Friday night.
The two guards traded difficult shots, momentum-changing baskets and impressive passes throughout the Indiana Fever's 98-87 victory over the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. They finished with 29 points apiece, turning the latest chapter of their rivalry into one of the season's most entertaining individual matchups.
Indiana coach Stephanie White enjoyed the show, but she also noticed the detail that ultimately helped Clark and the Fever leave with the victory.
Clark and Bueckers have been compared since their college careers, and their latest meeting offered another reminder of why both players have become foundational pieces for their franchises. Neither guard needed much room to create offense. Clark connected on deep jumpers and generated opportunities off the dribble, while Bueckers repeatedly found openings against Indiana's defense.

The release of the NBA Cup group play schedule Wednesday gives Pacers fans two marquee home games to circle on the calendar against the teams who may be the favorites to win the Eastern Conference. One of those will be broadcast nationally.
The Pacers will host the defending NBA champion New York Knicks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in a rematch of the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals and a game that will be broadcast on Amazon's Prime network. Then on Nov. 27, the Pacers host the Philadelphia 76ers at 7:30 p.m., which means LeBron James and Jaylen Brown come to town in new uniforms after James signed in free agency and Brown was traded from Boston.
The Pacers open NBA Cup group play on Oct. 30, the opening night of the event, on the road at Miami where they will see Giannis Antetokounmpo in a Heat uniform after his offseason trade. They also play the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
The Pacers are part of what would be called in soccer parlance a "group of death" thanks to their franchise-worst 19-63 finish last season when they were missing All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton due to a torn right Achilles tendon. Teams are randomly ***** igned to groups, but only after they're tiered according to last season's regular season finish.
The four other teams in the group all reached the postseason last year. The Knicks rode the Eastern Conference's third seed to the NBA ***** le. The Cavaliers finished fourth in the East and lost to the Knicks in the conference finals. The 76ers finishing seventh but stunned Boston in the first round before losing to the Knicks in the conference semifinals. The Heat reached the play-in round as the No. 10 seed but lost to Charlotte. Of course, the group was bolstered by the offseason entry of James and Antetokounmpo, two players with multiple MVP awards.

On the Eve of the full 2026-27 regular season drop, the league announced its 2026 NBA Cup group play schedule. The Oklahoma City Thunder are part of West Group B this year. Considering the rest of the field, they'll enter as favorites to win it.
The other four West Group B teams are the Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans. All five teams will play each other once throughout November. After that, the group winner will advance to the eight-team knockout tournament.
The NBA Cup is entering its fourth year. The league is divided into six groups of five teams. Three apiece in the West and East. Following the group stage, the six group winners punch their ticket to the eight-team tournament. The other two teams will be one wildcard team from each conference.
The NBA Cup quarterfinals will be on Dec. 4-5. The semifinals will be on Dec 8-9. The 2026 NBA Cup finals will be on Dec. 11. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted at the higher seed's home gym. Meanwhile, the finals have shifted from Las Vegas to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
As a reminder, the NBA Cup winner receives financial bonuses. The deeper you get into the tournament, the more money each player on the roster receives. Every game — minus the NBA Cup finals — also counts toward the regular-season standings.

Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark publicly backed Stephanie White after Indiana's second-year head coach was booed on the team's home court at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The boo birds rained down on White ahead of a 106-92 win over the New York Liberty, which marked the Fever's first game since Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington's hard foul on Sophie Cunningham and subsequent "White Privilege" post Aug. 8 reignited conversations about player safety and race. Some Fever fans felt White didn't adequately defend Cunningham, with Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith going as far as calling for White to be fired.
"I told (Stephanie White) that before the game, there was no way we were losing this game for her. And it's tough. That's my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest," Clark said in her postgame remarks. "It's professional sports, people are going to boo, but at the end of the day... we're going to ride for her and we're always going to have her back and that's never going to tear our locker room apart."
Clark added, "I just love her and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot at times and she does a great job a lot of times blocking it out, but there's other moments where it can get under your skin and that's just being human and that's just life."

Jon Scheyer isn't afraid of challenging his team with a difficult non-conference schedule. The Duke head coach hopes that the tough matchups early in the season will prepare his squad for ACC and tournament play, and once again, he's loaded up the early part of the Blue Devils' season with some marquee battles.
Before the official season even begins, the co-favorites to win the national ****** le will face off against Tennessee and Kansas, the latter in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
The regular season hits the ground running with a matchup against perennial Big 10 powerhouse Michigan State on Nov. 10 in the United Center in Chicago. The Spartans reached the Sweet 16 last season before falling to UConn, who went on to defeat Duke in the Elite Eight and make the national ****** le game.
A home game against Illinois, which made the Final Four this past season, arrives on Nov. 17 before Scheyer and his squad fly west to take on Washington State in Palm Desert, Calif., on Nov. 21 and a rematch against UConn on Nov. 25 in Las Vegas.
A battle of the two favorites to bring home the national ****** le trophy comes on Dec. 1 when the Blue Devils travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face Todd Golden's Gators. After the Brotherhood Game against Harvard, another SEC foe awaits in Georgia when Duke battles the Bulldogs in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 8.

Surely, you've heard by now about Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham's opinion that transgender athletes should not be allowed to participate in women's sports. The ESPN profile published on July 21, sparking a firestorm around the Fever, including "Support Sophie Cunningham" rallies at games in Seattle, Portland, and Minnesota. Cunningham started it, but people wanted Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark to answer for it. People always want to hear from Caitlin Clark.
Throughout last week's chaos, Clark did not meet with from the media until the postgame press conference following the Fever's loss to the Minnesota Lynx last Sunday, Aug. 2. The first question probed how Clark and her teammates navigated the aftermath of Cunningham's comments.
"I think, for us, it's not really a discussion we really have in our locker room," Clark said. "I think it's for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball. That's what we talk about and how we can get wins, and, obviously, we didn't do that tonight."
Clark's response was ripped by conservative media, underscoring the arduous position Clark occupies. Speak up, and she's wrong. Stay silent, and she's wrong. And now, Clark is addressing the intense scrutiny she faces for how she chooses to use her platform — and the mounting pressure to use her voice the way other people see fit.
"I think, first and foremost, you speak when you feel like you want to speak," Clark said during her media availability before the Fever took on the Las Vegas Aces at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Thursday, Aug. 6. "I think, for myself, I've been in this position for, what? Five years now? Four years? I think I have a good feel of what's gonna be asked, what's not gonna be asked, how to approach each situation, and I try to show up and just be myself every single day."

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is in Europe this offseason, spending time with his daughters while rehabilitating from his hamstring injury.
Doncic missed the entire postseason and the end of the regular season after his left hamstring tore.
Despite talk about Doncic possibly coming back in time for the playoffs, the Slovenian and the Lakers decided against being irresponsible and held him out.
He has been a star for years, but Doncic is only 27 years old, and the organization was intent on protecting his long-term future, which LA hopes will be in purple and gold.

When the NBA's calendar turned over on June 30, one of the first things the league made a point to do was announce the selection of Hinkle Fieldhouse as the first host of the NBA Cup Final outside of Las Vegas.
The IndyStar contacted the NBA to get a better sense of the process by which the league arrived at the decision to choose Hinkle. The league responded by e-mail with answers to the Star's question's from NBA Executive Vice President and Head of Global Events Kelly Flatow.
The Q&A follows.
Question: I recall Commissioner (Adam) Silver suggesting college arenas as a possibility last year. What sparked his and the league's interest in making the change out of Las Vegas and what drove the league to look at college arenas?
Answer: (The NBA referred to commissioner Adam Silver's quote from an interview in December, 2025.) “We’re talking with Amazon Prime about whether it makes sense to maybe go to some unique locations for the final game. They have suggested, for example, some storied college arenas so we’re just looking at other ways we can do this.”

Jul. 23—BEMIDJI — Michael Bitzer has been tethered to Bemidji for a long time, even when he didn't know it.
It started in Moorhead's youth hockey program. He took the crease in games at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.
When the Sanford Center opened in 2010, the Spuds took a trip to Bemidji to watch a game against Colorado College. Two years later, Bitzer backstopped Moorhead to a Section 8AA championship in the same building.
While playing in the United States Hockey League, Bitzer committed to play for Bemidji State. His four-year career from 2014-18 included a Western Collegiate Hockey ***** ociation championship in 2017, along with a top 10 Hobey Baker Award finalist nod.
Now, Bitzer has built a life in Germany. He's preparing to enter his eighth professional season overseas. Still, the invisible string occasionally reels him back to the First City on the Mississippi.
