Chelsea have completed a surprise move with the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The 33-year-old, who has been linked to leaving Villa for the last two summers, has finally got his wish as he has moved for £7.5million, signing a three-year contract with Chelsea.
It comes after criticism of Chelsea's current number one Robert Sanchez.
Martinez, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and twice secured the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper, is set to displace Sanchez.
"I'm delighted to be at this football club," Martinez told the club's official website. "Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I'm just over the moon – I can't wait to get started.

Aston Villa officially confirmed the departure of Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez. The historic Argentine goalkeeper was sold outright to Chelsea, bringing an unforgettable spell in Birmingham to a close as he takes a massive step forward within English football.
The Mar del Plata native arrived at the 'Villans' in 2020 from **** nal and quickly made the goal his own. Through impossible saves and fierce leadership, he became the standout figure of a team that reached the pinnacle by winning the UEFA Europa League last May.
His time at Villa Park was the perfect springboard for his rise with the Argentina National Team. Wearing the albiceleste, Dibu reached the very top: he won two Copa América **** les and the unforgettable World Cup in Qatar 2022, playing a decisive role in penalty shootouts.
Individual recognition soon followed for the No. 1. The Argentine won the Yashin Trophy twice (2023 and 2024) and claimed two FIFA The Best awards, cementing his status as the best goalkeeper on the planet.
From the English club, he was bid farewell with eternal gratitude for his competitive spirit and his indelible mark. Now, Dibu takes on a hugely prestigious challenge at Stamford Bridge, where he will look to make the 'Blues' goal his own.

Chelsea have made contact over a move for Emiliano Martinez, according to BBC Sport, and that tells you plenty about where the club are with the goalkeeper position. When a side starts exploring a deal for a 33-year-old World Cup winner, it usually means concern has moved beyond background noise and into active planning.
Martinez is considered available after Aston Villa signed Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30m. Villa and Chelsea already know each other's numbers. These clubs have done enough business in recent windows for ****** ody to pretend this would be complicated in principle. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for a club-record £117m, Alejandro Garnacho went the other way on an initial loan, and Nicolas Jackson, valued at around £65m, has also been mentioned as a possible Villa target.
Then there is the wider pattern. The clubs were part of the arrangement described as a "PSR swap", with Ian Maatsen joining Villa and Omari Kellyman, now at Strasbourg, moving to Chelsea. So if Chelsea want to test Villa's appetite for another deal, they know the route.
The timing matters. Robert Sanchez remains Chelsea's current number one, but the scrutiny is obvious. He was beaten at his near post by Josh King in the 3-2 win over Fulham and later spilled another effort, allowing Gonzalo Garcia to score. Those moments are exactly why transfer stories like this gather pace. Clubs can talk about trust all they like, but mistakes shape recruitment.

Unai Emery has revealed Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez could be the next Aston Villa players to join the exodus from the Europa League winners.
Villa have rejected several bids for Watkins from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal this week, but Emery hinted the England striker would be allowed to leave for the right price.
England defender Ezri Konsa is on the verge of sealing his move to Premier League champions ******* nal, while Argentina goalkeeper Martinez has told Emery he wants to go.
Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans have already been sold by Villa since the end of last season, joining Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United respectively.

Tottenham have reached an agreement to allow goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to sign for Juventus on a season-long loan, the Press ****** ociation understands.
Vicario had been in limbo all summer after he asked Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi to leave and return to his homeland following three years in north London.
Juventus emerged as Vicario's favoured option, but they first targeted a move for Emiliano Martinez and then Parma youngster Zion Suzuki.
However, after developments across the weekend, the Serie A club opened talks with Tottenham on Sunday and have wrapped up a season-long loan move with the option to buy the Italy international, PA understands.
De Zerbi gave the green light for Vicario to leave after Antonin Kinsky stepped up to guide the club away from relegation with a string of fine displays in the final seven matches of last season.

Juventus resumed pursuing Emiliano Martinez after Aston Villa came to terms with Parma for Zion Suzuki, but the deal quickly collapsed, and then they reached an agreement for Guglielmo Vicario instead, Fabrizio Romano reports (via SOSFanta).
The Birmingham-based club had shown interest in the **** anese international earlier in the summer. They returned after PSG gave up the chase due to late issues with the commissions. The Premier League club quickly offered Parma the same amount of money.
Juventus tried to take advantage of the turn of events to sign Martinez, who was higher on their shortlist than Vicario. However, Aston Villa didn't reduce their demands, around €15M, despite securing a new goalie. Moreover, the Argentinian star is dealing with a lingering finger injury that might require surgery at some point.
The Bianconeri were always willing to offer at most €6/7M plus add-ons for the veteran. Upon further reflection, they moved on again and formally opened talks with Tottenham. The Italian international wanted to leave, as he's the third-stringer now. The Spurs didn't insist on an obligation to buy, so he's joining on loan with a €10M option. He's returning to Serie A after his performances at Empoli earned him a move to London.
It was worth a shot given the Suzuki U-turn. The fact that Aston Villa are spending big at the position raises more than a few eyebrows about the latter's conditions, and the terms were tough to stomach, given his age. Surely the Spurs outcast doesn't arrive under the best circumstances, as they probed several options while he was just sitting there, but he's still better than Michele Di Gregorio in a perennial funk.

Chivas at times dominated but were only able to get a 1-1 tie against Puebla. Chivas was the better side from the start but their scoring troubles continued as they were only able to get a single goal against a Puebla side that looked to defend and counter from the start, giving away most possession. Both teams are going to the Leagues Cup before returning to Liga MX. Puebla will travel to Pachuca in their return while Chivas plays against Santos in Torreon.
The 1st half started with Chivas coming out with their best 11 including Brian Gutierrez from the start. Armando Gonzalez got into the area but his right footed shot would go wide. Roberto Alvarado got off a great left footed shot that was blocked by Puebla's goalkeeper, Ricardo Gutierrez. He would leave the ball there for Gonzalez go get a close range header but Gutierrez made a fantastic save to stop him from a sure goal. Gonzalez got into the area and his left footed shot was blocked by Gutierrez but it bounced off Juan Pablo Vargas and looked like it was going to be an own goal but it hit the post. Chivas was completely dominating the match but the score remained scoreless. Against the run of play, Emiliano Gomez got into the area and get past a defender before getting off a left footed shot that Chivas' goalkeeper Raul Rangel blocked but left there for Eduardo Mustre to get off a left footed shot in the net to score and give Puebla the surprising 1-0 lead. It was the first real chance for the home side and it was a bad mistake from Rangel to give up the lead. From outside the area, Ruben Gonzalez got off a right footed shot that went wide. Facundo Almada made a run into the area but his right footed shot went wide. Daniel Aguirre made a good move in the area and got off a left footed shot that went just wide. A cross into the area was headed by Bryan Alonso Gonzalez but it was cleared by Puebla's defense. Alonso Gonzalez got off a left footed shot inside the area that Gutierrez saved. The halftime whistle blew and although Chivas had played better, it was Puebla who had the lead at the break.
The 2nd half started with neither team making a substitution as it started to rain heavily in Puebla. Kevin Velasco got off a left footed shot from outside the area that Rangel saved. Alvarado would get the ball in the area and get off a right footed shot that hit the post. Chivas subbed out Fernando Gonzalez and Jordan Carrillo for Omar Govea and Efrain Alvarez. Alvarado got off a right footed shot from outside the area that Gutierrez made a great save on it. Off the ensuing corner kick, Chivas surprised by taking it quickly and Roberto Alvarado got off a great left footed shot inside the area that went past Gutierrez to score and tie the match at 1-1. A cross from Alvarado almost would turn into a shot that almost went in. Govea got off a right footed shot that would go well wide. Can Michael Kim follow up his second-round 59 to continue separating from the pack at the 2026 3M Open?
The 33-year-old from South Korea put down 12 birdies in his near-record round, shooting up the leaderboard to 14 under. Round 1 leader Ben Kohles enters Round 3 three strokes back, while Chandler Phillips, Michael Brennan and Emiliano Grillo made late pushes to get into contention.
PGA Tour rookie Jackson Koivun continued his impressive start, entering the third round four shots behind Kim. Billy Horschel, Troy Merritt and Zac Blair come in within five strokes of the lead, while Scottie Scheffler slipped up on the back nine Friday before wrapping with a birdie to enter moving day at 7 under. Gary Woodland and Hideki Matsuyama, who rallied after entering the second round below the cut line, also could make some noise today.

Scottie Scheffler is looking up at one of the most exciting rookies on the PGA Tour heading into the second round of the 2026 3M Open.
The world No. 1 started out strong with a 6-under 65, three strokes behind Ben Kohles. But the one to watch early on is Jackson Koivun, the 21-year-old who won the Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins award twice apiece at Auburn. In his third tournament as a full card-carrying PGA Tour member, Koivun shot a bogey-free round of 7-under 64. He's tied with Emiliano Grillo after Round 1.
Lucas Glover, Gary Woodland and Michael Brennan look to climb farther up the leaderboard today. There's a lot of room for movement around the cut line at TPC Twin Cities, with Hideki Matsuyama among those right on the projected cut line.

Juventus have picked up the telephone once again. According to reports coming out of Sport Mediaset, relayed by Transfer Feed, the Italian giants made fresh contact with Aston Villa regarding Emiliano Martinez shortly after the World Cup wrapped up. Turin has admired the 33-year-old Argentine stopper for a ***** long time now. This latest whisper suggests they haven't entirely given up the ghost just yet. Don't hold your breath though.
The very same report makes it abundantly clear that a move to Serie A is looking dead in the water. Why? Money, mostly. The financial demands floating out of Martinez's camp are described as astronomical. Combine that with Villa having zero reason to move him on, and you have a total non-starter. Unai Emery views the World Cup winner as an absolute cornerstone of his project at B6.
Looking back at the 2025/26 campaign, it is easy to see why. Martinez clocked up 32 Premier League appearances, bagging eight clean sheets and recording a 71.1% save percentage. He let in 37 goals across the domestic run while pulling off 96 saves, earning a solid 7.07 average match rating. Add a shiny Europa League winner's medal to the mantlepiece from that season too. He is pivotal. Plain and simple.
Villa Park bosses are sitting pretty. Martinez inked a fresh deal that keeps him tied to the West Midlands until June 2029. That puts every single card squarely in Villa's hands. They don't need the cash. They certainly don't want to lose their main man between the sticks. Crucially, the player himself hasn't thrown his toys out of the pram or demanded an exit. The real stumbling block here is his entourage.
Agent demands are currently knocking on doors that Juventus simply cannot open. The Old Lady has her own financial belt to tighten these days. Throwing silly money at inflated wage demands for a goalkeeper in his mid-thirties, no matter how decorated his trophy cabinet happens to be, is a gamble the Italian club just cannot afford right now.

Juventus remain at a standstill in negotiations with Aston Villa for Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, which could force the Old Lady to turn to either Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham Hotspur or Noah Atubolu from SC Freiburg according to the latest updates.
The Bianconeri have been hoping to strengthen their goalkeeping department this summer after an uninspiring season from Michele Di Gregorio in 2025-26, and for several weeks, World Cup runner-up Dibu Martinez has been the club's first choice.
However, despite the fact that there is an agreement in principle on personal terms in place with Martinez, Juventus have been unable to negotiate a fee with Aston Villa.
The Premier League side are adamant that they want at least €12m for the 33-year-old, while La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus are unwilling to match these demands.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Juventus's only remaining hope is that Martinez himself is able to persuade Aston Villa into accepting a bid from Turin once he returns from World Cup duty.

Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain are exploring a summer move to re-sign Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne, with the French club actively considering triggering a release clause in his contract. Unai Emery is at Villa Park. This move would mark a full-circle moment for the 32-year-old defender, who previously played at Parc des Princes from 2013 to 2016. Digne’s profile has risen considerably in recent years, highlighted by his prominent role for France during their successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in North America. He played the full 90 minutes in Les Bleus’ 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco, helping secure a semi-final berth against Spain.
PSG have identified Digne as an ideal solution to strengthen their defensive depth, and the release clause in his current Villa contract allows PSG to bypass direct club-to-club negotiations.
For Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, PSG’s interest in Digne adds to an already complex summer window. The Midlands club are currently battling to keep key first-team players, fending off ***** nal’s pursuit of Morgan Rogers so far and rejecting lowball offers from Italy for goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Additionally, a long-term ACL injury to midfielder Amadou Onana has forced Villa into the market for Johan Manzambi as they prepare to bid farewell to Youri Tielemans, who is set to join Manchester United.
Losing a dependable and experienced full-back like Digne due to a sudden activation of a release clause would further complicate Villa’s squad planning. However, with the defender currently focused on international duty, no definitive decision will be made until France’s World Cup campaign concludes.

Argentina defeated 10-man Switzerland in extra time after a wonderful Julian Álvarez strike booked their semi-final spot to set up a tantalising tie against England in the final four of the World Cup.
Argentina started fast and took an early lead from a simple corner routine, with Lionel Messi swinging it into Alexis Mac Allister who steered his header home in the first half.
Dan Ndoye and Ricardo Rodriguez responded in the second half with some lovely link up play before the former tucked the ball past Emiliano Martinez in the Argentine goal from a tight angle on the left to equalize.
However, mere minutes later Switzerland would be reduced to ten after a mistaken identity VAR check led to Breel Embolo being booked for simulation. Switzerland played out the remaining 20 plus minutes before heading into extra time.
In extra time, a moment of Álvarez magic put Argentina ahead before substitute Lautaro Martinez scored deep into extra time to seal the victory for the World Cup holders and ensure their **** le defence continued.

Juventus are once again keen on signing Emiliano Martínez with the goalkeeper reportedly open to a move to Serie A.
The Argentina international, who is currently representing his nation at the 2026 World Cup, has often been linked with a move away from Villa Park during his six seasons at Aston Villa.
This summer represents another opportunity for the 33-year-old to move on with Juventus again eyeing the shot-stopper.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Martínez would make the move to Juve with the Italian side having made an initial contract proposal to the player. Juventus will have to pay up to sign Martínez though, with the Villa man still having three years remaining on his contract.

Aston Villa have a verbal agreement with Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes, but the deal is far from simple. French outlet L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, reports that both Napoli and newly promoted Ipswich Town have barged into the boardroom to trigger a three-way transfer battle.
Everything at Villa Park depends on Emiliano Martínez. If the brilliant, erratic Argentine stays put, Unai Emery cannot pull the trigger on a new number one. If he leaves, the vacancy is there. Toulouse know exactly what they have in the 21-year-old shot-stopper. They want a premium package and will not even look at an offer under €20m. For Restes, the next move is about footballing sense, not just a paycheck.
TOULOUSE, FRANCE – NOVEMBER 09: Guillaume Restes of Toulouse celebrates the 1st Toulouse goal during the Group E – UEFA Europa League match 2023/24 match between Toulouse FC v Liverpool FC at Stadium de Toulouse on November 09, 2023 in Toulouse, France. (Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty Images)
Look at the data from last season. Restes was an absolute ever-present force in Ligue 1, starting 33 matches for Toulouse. That is massive consistency for a kid his age. He clocked up 33 starts in a top-five European league, managed nine clean sheets behind a shifting defence, and registered 85 saves, showing elite reflexes.
He does not just stand on his line either. Emery demands a modern keeper who can sweep up mess behind a high defensive line and kick-start building from the back. Restes registered 18 sweeper actions last term. He has a massive 188cm frame, dominates his box, and already has 14 caps for the France U21 national side.
