Aston Villa begin their 2026-27 Champions League campaign at Club Brugge on Tuesday, returning to continental football for the first time since winning the Europa League in Istanbul four months ago.
The Belgian champions, who have reached the knockout stage in each of their last three European campaigns, provide an early test for a Villa squad still adjusting to a heavy summer rebuild.
Tuesday's meeting is the fourth between these clubs in two years. Brugge won the earlier league-phase fixture 1-0 in Belgium during 2024-25, but Villa gained revenge in the round of 16, winning 6-1 on aggregate courtesy of a 3-1 victory in Bruges followed by a 3-0 win at Villa Park.
Both clubs sold key players for significant fees over the summer, with Villa losing Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martínez; Brugge have adapted more quickly, sitting second in the Belgian Pro League after four wins from five matches, while Villa have collected only a single point from their opening three Premier League games and remain without a league goal this season.

Mikel Arteta hailed a "beautiful" win after **** nal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.
The Premier League champions required a response after conceding for the first time this season, Morgan Rogers stunning home fans into silence with a volleyed goal after 77 seconds before the hosts hit back against a Chelsea side still finding its feet under Xabi Alonso.
Kai Havertz netted for the third time against his old club to equalise midway through the first half – a near-post effort that perhaps ought to have been kept out by Emiliano Martinez – then produced a sumptuous dummy to clear Martin Odegaard's path to goal, with the captain lashing home the winner in the 50th minute.
"I think it was an exceptional performance," said Arteta. "I enjoyed every minute of it, from the beginning to the end. The beginning was tough but I enjoyed it because the team reacted in a spectacular way. The determination, the quality. It was beautiful. It was a fascinating game for the spectator.
"I think it's an indication for us of how capable we are to perform at an even higher level than last season. We still have a lot to grow and a lot to offer."

Chelsea have had a few remarkable transfer summers since their forced sale from Roman Abramovich's control in May 2022.
Once again they were big spenders, outlaying £349m on 11 signings such as Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martinez.
But there was something different this time. Chelsea actually made a trading profit after selling 17 players.
Another 22 were loaned out, four of those with either sell-on options or obligations totalling more than £140m.
It meant a staggering 39 players left the club - and that is not including the four young players who were released.

Unai Emery has insisted that there are no "good relations" between Chelsea and Aston Villa after a series of transfers between the clubs.
On Sunday Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez joined Chelsea from Villa, completing the eighth deal between them in the past four years.
Martinez's move to Chelsea comes after Nicolas Jackson's transfer the other way last week.
No two Premier League clubs have exchanged more players, on permanent or loan deals, in the past four years.
But Villa boss Emery said the relationship between the two clubs is "only through the deals for money".

The visit of the champions arrives amid significant summer turnover at Villa Park, with several new signings in line to feature for the first time.
Leon Bailey, Amadou Onana (knee), Johan Manzambi (knee) and Brian Madjo (ankle/foot) are all unavailable, and Joao Gomes is suspended. Tammy Abraham is a doubt with a groin/hip issue. Ollie Watkins departed the club this summer, adding to the selection questions facing Emery in attack.
Zion Suzuki, a £30 million signing from Parma, is expected to make his Villa debut in goal after Marco Bizot started the defeat at Brighton. Leon Goretzka, who joined the club on Thursday, is set to come straight into midfield in place of the suspended Gomes, partnering Boubacar Kamara. Nicolas Jackson is also in line for his first involvement, leading the line in Watkins' absence, with John McGinn, Emiliano Buendía and George Hemmings providing support behind him.

Chelsea have been signing players all summer, but it looked like a new goalkeeper wouldn't be among them.
That all changed this week, when rumours of interest in Emi Martinez quickly turned to reality. It was really impressive how fast the deal was done, and many fans and pundits are putting it down to new manager Xabi Alonso and his decisiveness.
"There was some uncertainty about whether Emiliano Martinez would feature given his arrival was only confirmed this morning but the goalkeeper was registered in time," Nick Wright wrote for Sky Sports.

Chelsea have completed a surprise move with the signing of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The 33-year-old, who has been linked to leaving Villa for the last two summers, has finally got his wish as he has moved for £7.5million, signing a three-year contract with Chelsea.
It comes after criticism of Chelsea's current number one Robert Sanchez.
Martinez, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and twice secured the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper, is set to displace Sanchez.
"I'm delighted to be at this football club," Martinez told the club's official website. "Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I'm just over the moon – I can't wait to get started.

At last, the goalkeeper Chelsea had been waiting for!
No longer in Aston Villa's good graces, Emiliano Martinez has found a prestigious landing spot.
This Sunday, Chelsea announced the signing of the Argentine goalkeeper on a two-year deal.
So, in the final hours of the transfer window, Chelsea have landed one of the most highly regarded goalkeepers on the European scene.
At 33, Emiliano Martinez must now bring stability to a position that has been a problem for Chelsea for far too long.

Aston Villa officially confirmed the departure of Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez. The historic Argentine goalkeeper was sold outright to Chelsea, bringing an unforgettable spell in Birmingham to a close as he takes a massive step forward within English football.
The Mar del Plata native arrived at the 'Villans' in 2020 from **** nal and quickly made the goal his own. Through impossible saves and fierce leadership, he became the standout figure of a team that reached the pinnacle by winning the UEFA Europa League last May.
His time at Villa Park was the perfect springboard for his rise with the Argentina National Team. Wearing the albiceleste, Dibu reached the very top: he won two Copa América **** les and the unforgettable World Cup in Qatar 2022, playing a decisive role in penalty shootouts.
Individual recognition soon followed for the No. 1. The Argentine won the Yashin Trophy twice (2023 and 2024) and claimed two FIFA The Best awards, cementing his status as the best goalkeeper on the planet.
From the English club, he was bid farewell with eternal gratitude for his competitive spirit and his indelible mark. Now, Dibu takes on a hugely prestigious challenge at Stamford Bridge, where he will look to make the 'Blues' goal his own.

Chelsea have made contact over a move for Emiliano Martinez, according to BBC Sport, and that tells you plenty about where the club are with the goalkeeper position. When a side starts exploring a deal for a 33-year-old World Cup winner, it usually means concern has moved beyond background noise and into active planning.
Martinez is considered available after Aston Villa signed Zion Suzuki from Parma for about £30m. Villa and Chelsea already know each other's numbers. These clubs have done enough business in recent windows for ****** ody to pretend this would be complicated in principle. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for a club-record £117m, Alejandro Garnacho went the other way on an initial loan, and Nicolas Jackson, valued at around £65m, has also been mentioned as a possible Villa target.
Then there is the wider pattern. The clubs were part of the arrangement described as a "PSR swap", with Ian Maatsen joining Villa and Omari Kellyman, now at Strasbourg, moving to Chelsea. So if Chelsea want to test Villa's appetite for another deal, they know the route.
The timing matters. Robert Sanchez remains Chelsea's current number one, but the scrutiny is obvious. He was beaten at his near post by Josh King in the 3-2 win over Fulham and later spilled another effort, allowing Gonzalo Garcia to score. Those moments are exactly why transfer stories like this gather pace. Clubs can talk about trust all they like, but mistakes shape recruitment.

The Italy international, 29, is set to travel to Turin to complete a move back to Serie A, with a non-mandatory £8.6m purchase option included in the deal.
It follows Juventus' attempts to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, which has collapsed as Villa close in on signing Parma's Zion Suzuki.
Martinez was known to have an injured finger and is currently unavailable for selection.
Vicario, meanwhile, lost his place in the Spurs side under manager Roberto de Zerbi, who promoted understudy Antonin Kinsky to the role last season.

Vicario had been in limbo all summer after he asked Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi to leave and return to his homeland following three years in north London.
Juventus emerged as Vicario's favoured option, but they first targeted a move for Emiliano Martinez and then Parma youngster Zion Suzuki.
However, after developments across the weekend, the Serie A club opened talks with Tottenham on Sunday and have wrapped up a season-long loan move with the option to buy the Italy international, PA understands.
De Zerbi gave the green light for Vicario to leave after Antonin Kinsky stepped up to guide the club away from relegation with a string of fine displays in the final seven matches of last season.

Juventus resumed pursuing Emiliano Martinez after Aston Villa came to terms with Parma for Zion Suzuki, but the deal quickly collapsed, and then they reached an agreement for Guglielmo Vicario instead, Fabrizio Romano reports (via SOSFanta).
The Birmingham-based club had shown interest in the **** anese international earlier in the summer. They returned after PSG gave up the chase due to late issues with the commissions. The Premier League club quickly offered Parma the same amount of money.
Juventus tried to take advantage of the turn of events to sign Martinez, who was higher on their shortlist than Vicario. However, Aston Villa didn't reduce their demands, around €15M, despite securing a new goalie. Moreover, the Argentinian star is dealing with a lingering finger injury that might require surgery at some point.
The Bianconeri were always willing to offer at most €6/7M plus add-ons for the veteran. Upon further reflection, they moved on again and formally opened talks with Tottenham. The Italian international wanted to leave, as he's the third-stringer now. The Spurs didn't insist on an obligation to buy, so he's joining on loan with a €10M option. He's returning to Serie A after his performances at Empoli earned him a move to London.
It was worth a shot given the Suzuki U-turn. The fact that Aston Villa are spending big at the position raises more than a few eyebrows about the latter's conditions, and the terms were tough to stomach, given his age. Surely the Spurs outcast doesn't arrive under the best circumstances, as they probed several options while he was just sitting there, but he's still better than Michele Di Gregorio in a perennial funk.
