China's breakthrough in domestic chipmaking equipment sparked a major semiconductor sell-off, dragging down Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) despite strong fundamentals.
An announcement from a manufacturing facility in Shanghai on July 27, 2026, caused a severe summer downturn for the AI semiconductor market. State-supported Shanghai Aishengna reported the production of homegrown immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography systems for domestic fabrication facilities. It marks the first viable domestic substitute for technology ASML (NASDAQ:ASML) has exclusively controlled for twenty years, leading to an 8% decline in ASML's shares. But the loss did not stop here.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) fell over 8%, recording the steepest decline among its peers. The fall comes despite the core business metrics remaining steady. Merely a few months ago, the company reported a strong first-quarter performance, with earnings per share reaching $1.37, beating the consensus estimate of $1.29, and total revenue touching $10.25 billion against the forecasted $9.89 billion. Data-center revenue alone saw 57% year-over-year growth, reaching $5.8 billion. The 8% decline does not reflect a flaw in any of these fundamentals, because there were none.
Immersion DUV technology processes mature nodes. On the other hand, AMD's MI300 series and upcoming MI400/MI455X accelerators rely on TSMC's cutting-edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. The related technology is exclusively supplied by ASML and goes beyond the current Chinese capabilities. Shanghai Aishengna's DUV equipment cannot produce these advanced accelerators. As such, their technology affects neither TSMC's supply chain nor AMD's pricing power. Additionally, Aishengna aims for just five units in 2026 compared to ASML's 130 in the same year. With EUV remaining inaccessible to domestic producers, investors' reaction is impulsive rather than based on an evaluation of the underlying technical reality.
The numbers remain solid even after the decline. Post-drop, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is trading near a forward P/E of 60 – approximately two times the industry median of 30x. Its EV/EBITDA is in the upper 80s, and its PEG is above 1.2 as compared to Nvidia at 0.5. Alongside these figures, AMD retains its position as the more expensive, lower-margin, second-place vendor. When valuation multiples carry the weight of a stock's worth, a sudden market shock will hit the stocks with the smallest safety margins the hardest. The fault is not with the company, but the elevated purchase price already set by investors.

Shake Shack (NYSE: SHAK) reports second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, Aug. 5, but if you're long on Shake Shack, you should focus less on whether the company beats estimates and more on whether its growth story remains intact. So far, it does.
In Q1, revenue climbed 14.3% year over year to $366.7 million, while same-store sales increased 4.6%. The company also opened 17 company-operated restaurants and five licensed locations, continuing one of the fastest expansion plans in the fast-casual industry. I've personally seen quite a few at the travel plazas along the New York Thruway. They're becoming about as common as Chick-fil-A and Starbucks.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Expansion hasn't been an issue. But the challenge of profitability is very real. That shouldn't be taken lightly.
Higher beef costs, pre-opening expenses, and investments in technology and marketing helped push Shake Shack to a small net loss of $0.3 million in Q1, compared with net income of $4.5 million a year earlier. Those same pressures prompted management to lower its Q2 and full-year profit guidance. The company now expects Q2 revenue of $415 million to $420 million from a previous range of $424 million to $428 million. It also reduced its full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) guidance to $225 million to $235 million, down from $230 million to $245 million.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings reported second-quarter net income of $222.6 million, or $0.48 per share, up from $30 million, or $0.07 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share also came in at $0.48, ahead of the company's own guidance of $0.38 and above the $0.39 ***** yst consensus, according to MarketWatch.
Total revenue for the quarter rose 4.9% to $2.64 billion. Adjusted EBITDA declined 4.1% to $666 million from $694 million a year earlier, still beating guidance of $632 million.
Despite the better-than-expected quarter, Norwegian trimmed its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to approximately $1.50. The company had previously guided to a range of $1.45 to $1.79 per share, according to MarketWatch. Full-year adjusted EBITDA is now expected to be approximately $2.5 billion, and full-year net yield on a constant currency basis is expected to be down approximately 5% versus 2025.
The company said it has not yet reached its optimal booked position for the coming year, pointing to demand headwinds at its Norwegian Cruise Line brand stemming from operational missteps and instability in the Middle East. Fuel costs have also added to the pressure, with the per-metric-ton price jumping to $888 compared with $659 a year ago. For the third quarter, the company projects adjusted EPS of $0.90 and a net yield decline of 8.9% on a constant currency basis.
"While we are confident in the strength of our brands and the long-term benefits of the actions underway, we are still in the early stages of our turnaround," said John W. Chidsey, chairperson and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, in a statement.

The North American automotive industry is facing a dramatic change in the operational environment this year, which is marked by increased financing barriers and ongoing consumer price sensitivity. Since average auto loan interest rates are still more than 8%, consumers are delaying expensive discretionary upgrades, extending payment terms, and challenging aggressive price hikes. Legacy OEMs have been forced to give up unrestricted EV capital expenditure targets because of the sharp slowdown amid an overall shift to electric vehicles. That said, not every auto manufacturer is performing on the same level, with General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) serving as a case study on these dynamics.
General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) produced an exceptional second-quarter performance that showed impressive operational discipline in the face of this demanding macroenvironment. Strong pricing power and unit volume across its high-margin full-sized pickup and SUV categories, such as the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Tahoe, drove GM's $48 billion quarterly revenue. Due to this legacy strength, North American operating margins reached 8.6%, which boosted adjusted earnings per share to $3.57 and resulted in a 41% year-over-year increase, significantly above Wall Street estimates.
Importantly, General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) showed that its multibillion-dollar effort to streamline its EV division and properly size battery joint ventures is producing immediate financial results, allowing executive leadership to raise full-year adjusted operating income (EBIT) guidance to between $14 billion and $16 billion.
Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) had a much more divided operating narrative. Despite exceeding consensus estimates with adjusted earnings per share of $0.42 and matching GM on top-line revenue at $48 billion, underlying segment performance revealed ongoing structural friction. Due to enterprise fleet demand and high-margin software subscriptions, Ford Pro, the company's commercial branch, continued to be a high-margin cash engine.
However, the company's electric vehicle division, Model e, recorded a sharp $1.26 billion quarterly operational loss, severely undermining these gains.

ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) is one of the top energy names in President Donald Trump's financial disclosures from earlier this year. The stock is up about 27% so far this year. But does a presidential trade make it a buy today? Let's break down what's actually driving the stock.
Exxon benefits directly from rising oil prices amid the Iran war. Its upstream segment was projected to see a multibillion-dollar earnings lift for the second quarter compared to the first, driven almost entirely by higher realized prices rather than any change in production. That's the logic behind buying an oil major right as a Middle East conflict escalates.
Exxon's balance sheet gives it room to lean into higher prices. Net debt relative to EBITDA sits under 1x, among the lowest in the industry, and the company is on pace to repurchase roughly $20 billion of stock this year. Guyana production just hit a quarterly record above 900,000 barrels a day, and the company has applied to drill dozens more wells there.
In the Permian Basin, Exxon is now the largest operator following its Pioneer acquisition and expects to roughly double output there by 2030. Longer term, natural gas tied to data center power demand is another growth lever bulls point to, with McKinsey estimating data centers could eventually account for more than a tenth of total U.S. power demand.
There's a demand question sitting underneath the price spike. The IEA sees global oil demand softening this year, and even OPEC, which tends to run more optimistic, trimmed its own demand growth forecast. If the Iran-driven premium in oil prices fades if another ceasefire takes place, some of Exxon's near-term earnings boost fades with it.

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) jumped recently after posting earnings. Profit beat estimates and rose year over year, but revenue missed estimates.
The stock still trades at a discount to peers, under 9.5 times forward earnings versus roughly 13x for the group. The question is whether that discount is a gift or a warning sign.
Verizon just posted a strong quarter for postpaid phone net additions in five years, beating ****** yst expectations by a wide margin. Broadband adds stayed strong across fixed wireless and fiber. Adjusted EBITDA hit a record, up 7.2%, pushing margins to an all-time high above 40%.
Management raised full-year guidance for the second straight quarter. EPS growth is now guided to 6-7%, and free cash flow growth guidance got ****** ped to 9-10% from 7% previously. That's a meaningful acceleration from the low single-digit free cash flow growth Verizon posted the last few years.
The dividend looks safe. Free cash flow payout ratio sits under half of what the company generates, and the roughly 6% yield comes with a multi-year streak of annual hikes. Buybacks add another layer of shareholder return: the company is already ahead of pace for the year, and management just raised the full-year target further.

The global spirits sector is undergoing a phase of aggressive structural consolidation, as evidenced by Sazerac Company's ambitious bid to merge with Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BF-B). In an updated proposal letter to Class A shareholders dated July 24, Sazerac restated its all-cash bid of $32 per share for all outstanding Class A and Class B common shares. The proposal, which came with a full 13-page white paper, outlined a transformative financial case that would create a global beverage ****** an second only to Diageo in total annual revenue. The combined company is expected to generate more than $12 billion in revenue in 2026, as well as over $3 billion in EBITDA with an EBITDA margin of more than 30%.
Sazerac's operational strategy includes a broad "U.S. Margin Architecture Reset," which involves transferring Brown-Forman's premium portfolio, anchored on Jack Daniel's and Woodford Reserve, to Sazerac's high-efficiency domestic route-to-market (RTM) network. Internationally, the combined company would reverse this approach by integrating Sazerac's developing brand portfolio into Brown-Forman's existing global distribution footprint. According to Forbes, the white paper adopts a targeted "going deep, not broad" international strategy, naming the United Kingdom, India, and Australia as main acceleration markets where Brown-Forman's current route-to-market infrastructure might enable rapid geographic development for Sazerac's spirit portfolio.
Despite the strategic logic of Sazerac's plan, the acquisition attempt has run into an immovable corporate governance wall. Brown-Forman's controlling voting block, Wolf Pen Branch LP, which includes members of the Brown Family, made a decisive joint statement rejecting the revised plan as "not actionable". Since the Brown family owns more than 50% of the Class A voting stock, no change-of-control transaction can take place without their specific approval.
This refusal marks Brown-Forman's second high-profile M&A deadlock in 2026. Earlier this year, Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BF-B) formally began exploratory merger talks with French liquor company Pernod Ricard. These talks were officially discontinued on April 28 when the parties were unable to establish mutually acceptable conditions, setting the stage for Sazerac's initial unsolicited bid on May 1.
The rejection of a $32 per share cash offer demonstrates a significant value gap in Brown-Forman's stock price. The company trades at around $28 per share and has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 16.8x, near the low end of its historical range and a notable discount to its 10-year historical average forward multiple of around 30x. Industry-wide destocking, lower global spirits consumption, and continuing input cost inflation have all negatively impacted Brown-Forman's near-term operating performance, reducing the company's market capitalization to around $13 billion. Sazerac's $32 cash bid suggests a price closer to 21x projected earnings

Lemonade, Inc. (NYSE:LMND) shares fell more than 7% in pre-market trading after the AI-powered insurance company released its second-quarter 2026 results, with investors reacting negatively despite revenue outperforming expectations.
The sell-off reflected concerns that the company's outlook failed to justify the high expectations already priced into the stock, following a strong rally earlier in the year.
Ahead of the earnings release, ***** ysts had expected Lemonade to report a quarterly loss of around $0.57 per share, while investors were looking for results capable of supporting the company's ambitious growth outlook.
Although revenue exceeded expectations, the market response suggested investors were disappointed that the company's guidance did not provide a stronger catalyst for further gains.
The negative reaction came after Lemonade had previously raised its full-year outlook and reaffirmed its expectation of achieving positive adjusted EBITDA during the fourth quarter of 2026.

The energy sector in 2026 is experiencing a split-margin scenario that few investors are pricing cleanly. Even though the broader market views the sector as mature and low-growth, refining margins remain significantly higher than their typical mid-cycle range.
Chemicals, on the other hand, are only now recovering from some of their lowest margins in years, with the Chemical Manufacturing Industry posting an EBITDA margin of 16.86% in the year leading up to Q2 2026.
Meanwhile, renewable diesel, which has long been a burden on integrated energy earnings, is moving from below break-even to mid-cycle profitability, thanks to a regulatory reset rather than increased demand. This comes as S&P Global reported that the applicable biomass-based diesel volume requirement has been substantially raised from 5.42 billion gallons in 2025 to 9.07 billion gallons in 2026.
Only a handful of companies sit at the center of all three cycles simultaneously. That's why Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) is worth a deeper study. It isn't a pure refiner, a pure chemicals operation, or a pure renewables gamble, but rather a company whose near-term earnings potential depends on three distinct margin recoveries occurring nearly in sync.
The refining rebound is already quantifiable as PSX's realized refining margin increased by 48% to $10.11 per barrel in Q1 2026, from $6.81 the previous year, while crude capacity utilization increased to 95% from 80%. This lifted the refining business from a $937 million adjusted loss in Q1 2025 to a $208 million adjusted profit, bringing overall adjusted EPS to $0.49, above the Wall Street forecast of a $0.40 per share loss.

Commodity producing and trading giant Glencore expects to post a profit of $3.3 billion in its marketing division for the first half of the year, as extreme market volatility during the Iran war generated windfall earnings for the energy commodity traders.
Glencore expects to report next week a strong half-year marketing adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of about $3.3 billion in its Marketing segment, which includes oil trading, the company said on Wednesday in its half-year production report.
The trading giant didn't specify how much energy trading contributed to the profit, but it's expected to do so in the detailed half-year earnings due out next week.
At any rate, the market volatility of the past five months is putting Glencore's trading profit on track for its best year ever if energy markets continue to whipsaw in the coming months.
Glencore book its highest ever full-year EBIT in marketing for 2022, the year in which the Russian invasion of Ukraine upended energy flows and markets and sent oil prices soaring to $120 per barrel.

Eni (E:NYSE) is raising its share buyback program for the year after reporting on Wednesday consensus-beating earnings for the second quarter on the back of higher oil and gas prices and a jump in upstream production.
The Italian energy major booked an adjusted net profit of $2.65 billion (2.33 billion euros) for the second quarter, more than doubled from $1.29 billion (1.13 billion euros) for the same period last year, and higher than a company-provided consensus estimate of $2.4 billion (2.09 billion euros).
Eni attributed the profit jump to higher oil and gas realizations in a "supportive pricing environment," as well as to growth in volumes and cost management.
The exploration and production (E&P) division reported pro forma adjusted EBIT soaring by 42% from the first quarter of 2026 and by 97% from the second quarter of 2025, driven by favorable volume and mix effects, cost discipline, and better oil realizations, Eni said.
Eni's average realized price of liquids jumped by 54% from a year earlier to $96.50 per barrel for the second quarter of 2026.

Philips had the kind of quarter that sounds great until you read past the headline. Sales up, margins up, cash flow guidance up. Then you notice the margin beat is wearing a costume: a U.S. tariff refund, not better medicine.
Philips posted second-quarter sales of €4.4 billion (about $5 billion), up 4% on a comparable basis. Adjusted EBITA margin jumped to 16.4%, but a €186 million US tariff refund did most of the actual lifting, worth 4.2 percentage points out of €609 million in operating income. Take that refund away and underlying margin actually slipped.
Orders told a rougher story: comparable intake fell 1%, dragged down by several big Connected Care contracts in North America that simply slid into next quarter. Europe, meanwhile, posted strong double-digit order growth, no asterisk required. All three divisions still grew, Diagnosis & Treatment up 2%, Connected Care up 2%, Personal Health up a genuinely solid 8%.
Management left full-year sales guidance untouched at 3-4.5%, but raised margin guidance to 13.5-14% and lifted free cash flow guidance to €1.5-1.7 billion, all while quietly excluding the still-unresolved Respironics legal mess, including active US investigations. Shares fell anyway. Investors did the math on the refund themselves.

Eni raised its 2026 oil and gas production outlook and expanded its share buyback program after reporting significantly stronger second-quarter results, supported by double-digit production growth, higher commodity prices and improved performance across several business segments.
The Italian energy company now expects underlying full-year hydrocarbon production growth of around 5%, up from its previous guidance of 3% to 4%, following 11% year-over-year underlying production growth in the second quarter to 1.79 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, excluding price effects.
The improved outlook prompted Eni to increase its planned 2026 share repurchase program to €3.4 billion, up from the previously revised €2.8 billion, while reaffirming its planned dividend of €1.10 per share. The company also said an extraordinary dividend could be considered later this year if refining margins remain well above budget ****** umptions.
Second-quarter adjusted EBIT more than doubled year over year to €5.38 billion, while adjusted net profit rose to €2.3 billion. The upstream business generated €4.77 billion in adjusted EBIT, benefiting from higher production, favorable oil realizations and continued cost discipline. Cash flow before working capital reached €4.47 billion, comfortably covering €1.84 billion in capital spending and €1.35 billion returned to shareholders through dividends and buybacks during the quarter.
Strategically, Eni continued expanding its upstream portfolio and transition businesses. During the quarter it established the Searah joint venture with Petronas, creating a regional platform spanning Indonesia and Malaysia that will develop major gas discoveries in the Kutei Basin. The company also approved final investment decisions for the Baleine Phase 3 development offshore Côte d'Ivoire, the Greater PAJ project offshore Angola, and the Cronos gas project offshore Cyprus.

Cash flow before working capital reached €4.47 billion, comfortably covering €1.84 billion in capital spending and €1.35 billion returned to shareholders through dividends and buybacks during the quarter.
Strategically, Eni continued expanding its upstream portfolio and transition businesses. The 2026 Carolina Panthers may just be snakebitten. Any lingering question about that was answered emphatically on Wednesday morning, when the team suffered their third injury in just their fifth day of training camp.
Last week, it was second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton who went down with a season-ending ACL tear, followed by tight end Mitchell Evans getting carted off with an ankle sprain on Tuesday. And yesterday, it was rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II, who was wheeled away with a moderate LCL tear.
Scourton is the biggest loss in the bunch—for now, at least—and his absence represents a devastating blow to a defense that could have taken a big step forward this season. With their rising star out, Carolina's pass rush has been ranked 31st in the NFL by CBS Sports.
Carter Bahns writes:
If not for the injury Nic Scourton sustained on the first day of training camp, the Panthers would rank a healthy number of spots higher. Instead, his season is over before it even begins due to a torn ACL. Neither Phillips nor Jones is exactly reliable in terms of staying on the field, either, so the bottom has the threat of really falling out from underneath this group. Phillips is a plus starter when healthy, though, like he was all of last year.

Performance outperformance was driven by a significant acceleration in acquisition volume, totaling $374 million in Q2 alone, supported by a fragmented market and a first-mover advantage.
Management attributes the increased deal flow to a generational transfer of wealth, where private owners are seeking liquidity for estate planning purposes.
Operational strength is underpinned by a highly diversified tenant base where only one tenant contributes more than 2% of base rent, mitigating individual tenant risk.
The portfolio's focus on 'vehicular corridors' and 'errand-based' shopping drives high demand from national tenants who can generate higher 4-wall EBITDA than local operators.
