The 2026 midterm elections was a decisive victory for Democrats, who won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. With Republicans retaining the White House, the election results bring a period of divided government starting in January.
Wall Street's initial reaction has been enthusiastic. As of this writing (Nov. 4), the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) surged more than 1,500 points during morning trading, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) also rallied.

Beneath the broader market's gains, investors are undoubtedly repositioning their portfolios. Artificial intelligence (AI) hyperscalers like Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms are surging, while many semiconductor stocks and data center operators are plunging.
The contrasting performance reflects uncertainty about how the election could affect AI and adjacent industries. For investors wondering whether to change their portfolios following the election, Warren Buffett's advice about mixing politics and investing is particularly relevant.

Over the last four years, the ageless Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and growth-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have been virtually unstoppable. The artificial intelligence (AI) data center build-out has fueled an investing frenzy similar to what was witnessed in the mid-to-late 1990s with the internet.
But the stock market isn't without headwinds. Arguably, the biggest obstacle to the continuity of this bull market rally is persistently elevated inflation. The bad news for investors is that the Federal Reserve's initial inflation forecast for November shows things are getting downright ugly for Wall Street.

US stocks jumped on Wednesday after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in a seismic midterm election, paving the way for a divided government.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) rose 3%, or over 1,500 points, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) climbed 1.7%. The Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) traded up by 1.6% amid a post-election relief rally.
Markets swiftly repriced a Democratic sweep of the House and Senate — and the potential for ballot measures and newly elected officials to restrict data center construction. Chip stocks, including Nvidia (NVDA) and Micron (MU), fell. Meanwhile, other parts of the tech sector offset some of those losses, with Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) each hitting all-time highs.
Investors will also be watching for policy actions on housing and pharmaceuticals in the aftermath of the election. As Yahoo Finance's Jared Blikre pointed out on Tuesday, midterm elections have a history of shaping stock performance in the near term but don't tend to move markets much over the long term.
On the economic front, ISM and S&P data showed that US services activity expanded at a slower pace in October as businesses continued to grapple with elevated costs. Private-sector hiring, meanwhile, continued to show strength in October as an ADP report indicated "pretty solid job growth."

The "Magnificent Seven" was popularized in 2023 by Bank of America ****** yst Michael Hartnett as a term for seven rapidly appreciating tech-focused growth companies. In 2023, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) were instrumental in driving the Nasdaq Composite's (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) monster 43.4% gain -- with all seven companies posting even bigger returns.
Big gains followed in 2024, with every Magnificent Seven stock except for Microsoft outperforming the Nasdaq and S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). But in 2025, only Nvidia and Alphabet outperformed both indexes. And after last week's sell-off, the only Magnificent Seven stock left standing above the indexes is Apple, which surpassed Nvidia as the world's most valuable company on Oct. 30.

If a stock market crash is coming, it's not all bad news for investors. Warren Buffett has a simple seven-word strategy for times like these, and it could help you generate life-changing wealth amid market volatility.
In 2008, Buffett penned an opinion piece for The New York Times. The U.S. was deep into the Great Recession at that point, with the S&P 500 having plunged nearly 40% over the previous year, and many investors were losing hope that the market would ever recover.

With mere hours left on Election Night before polling closes across America, traders on prediction market platform Polymarket are forecasting an 89% chance (as of 7 p.m. ET) that Democrats sweep and retake both the House of Representatives and the Senate. For context, Republicans enter the midterms with 218 of 435 House seats and 53 of 100 Senate seats.
The potential implications of midterm elections on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) are massive. If a "blue wave" does unfold, things could get dicey, at least over the short run, for a historically expensive stock market.

President Donald Trump hasn't been keen on the prospect of working with the opposition. In a recent Fox News interview, he proclaimed that "I guess I'll become Mr. Veto" if a blue wave takes shape, and has previously gone on record as stating that he'd "veto everything" sent to him by a Democrat-led Congress.

Throughout the day, Americans from across our great nation have headed to the polls or mailed in their ballots to make their voices heard. According to popular prediction market Kalshi, as of 8:50 p.m. ET, the odds have skyrocketed to better than 99% that Democrats will retake control of the House of Representatives. Regardless of what happens in the Senate, President Trump would be working with a divided Congress come January 2027.
Based on what history tells us, a split Congress can significantly alter annualized return expectations for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC).

If prediction markets prove accurate and Democrats do retake one or both houses of Congress, President Donald Trump's second nonconsecutive term will mirror his first. Yesterday, tens of millions of Americans made their voices heard by casting or mailing in their ballots. These votes have charted a new course for America, with Democrats taking firm control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to the **** ociated Press. President Trump has enjoyed a unified Republican government in the first two years of both of his nonconsecutive terms. In each case, Congress passed, and he signed into law, a major tax and spending bill. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) (signed December 2017) permanently lowered the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21%, fueling S&P 500 share buybacks, while the Big, Beautiful Bill (signed July 2025) made the personal income tax bracket reductions from the TCJA permanent.

President Donald Trump has been in the White House for nearly six years, spanning two nonconsecutive terms. Over that time, the iconic Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and growth-dependent Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have delivered well-above-average annual returns, compared to most other presidents since the late 1890s.
One of the key catalysts powering Wall Street's bull market, the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure build-out, was well underway before Trump's second term began. But make no mistake about it: Wall Street and investors have also benefited immensely from the president's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (signed into law in December 2017), which lowered the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21% (the lowest rate since 1939), fueling record S&P 500 share buybacks.

Intel lost almost a third of its value on Friday. By the close, the Nasdaq Composite had sealed its worst month since March 2025, down 5.3%.
Tom Lee of Fundstrat, a Wall Street research firm, has another suspect. He thinks one big investor may have been forced to dump tech shares, leaving tech holders with the losses.
Speaking on CNBC as the Nasdaq slid on Friday, Lee said the market was fighting an "internal battle" and that the selling looked forced.
"Today looks like someone's getting liquidated. I don't know if it's an institution," he said.
By "liquidated," Lee means forced to sell. This happens when an investor buys shares with borrowed money and prices then fall. The lender wants its money back, so the investor has to sell at any price.

After years of almost entirely focusing on the transfer portal, Rick Pitino is intensifying his efforts on the high school recruiting trail, and another class of 2027 prospect is landing on the Red Storm's radar.
Four-star Canadian recruit Godson Okokoh is reportedly scheduling a visit to St. John's on November 6 and 7, according to LeagueReady's Sam Kayser. It is unclear whether Okokoh will attend the Red Storm's matchup against Iona at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, November 8.
The 6-foot-8 forward from Ottawa is the 111th-ranked prospect in his class according to 247Sports' composite rankings and will compete in this year's Overtime Elite season with Bella Vista Prep, who will play as the City Reapers in the league. He flashed his rim protection and inside scoring in the Nike EYBL Scholastic division and the Under Armour Circuit last season, and also made a strong impression at this summer's NBPA Top 100 camp.
Okokoh made only one other visit this year at West Virginia on October 6. His offers include Kansas, Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Creighton, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, and Arizona State.
Earlier this year, Okokoh helped Canada pull off a shocking upset over the United States to win its first-ever FIBA U18 AmeriCup gold medal. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.4 rebounds over five games and recorded a team-high eight boards in the championship final.

This has been a history-packed year for Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) have all catapulted to several new highs, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh was sworn in as only the 17th head of the Fed on May 22.
But the most game-changing event of them all might be Warsh and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) kicking off only the fourth interest rate-hiking cycle of the 21st century on Sept. 16. Fed Chair Warsh and 11 other FOMC colleagues voted unanimously (12-0) to raise the federal funds target rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%.

From a purely statistical standpoint, Wall Street has thrived under President Donald Trump. During his first, non-consecutive term, the timeless Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) gained 57%, 70%, and 142%, respectively. We've witnessed something of an encore performance since the beginning of his second term in January 2025.
The Trump bull market is being fueled by the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure build-out, much better-than-expected corporate earnings, and record share buybacks. The president's first-term tax-and-spending law, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (signed into law December 2017), spurred the latter by reducing the peak marginal corporate income tax rate to 21%, the lowest level since 1939.

The S&P 500 hit a record Tuesday as it rose for a fourth straight day, supported by rising technology stocks, hopes for a positive earnings season and a pause in oil’s recent surge.
The broad-based index closed higher by 0.58%, its first record closing high since Aug. 13. The Nasdaq Composite also jumped 0.45%. It also hit a record high for the second time this week.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq’s gains were overwhelmingly powered by gains in tech companies, such as chipmakers Marvell and Broadcom.
Nvidia, the world’s largest public company, also rose and moved closer to becoming the first company to ever reach $6 trillion in market value. Other trillion-dollar tech stocks also rose Tuesday. Microsoft, Amazon, **** eX, Meta Platforms and Tesla shares all traded in the green.
Investors are also looking forward to the start of the third quarter’s earnings season, which begins in earnest next week with the country’s biggest banks reporting their results.

It's been a year of historic change on Wall Street. US stocks were mixed on Friday as investors continued to calibrate to the Federal Reserve's first rate hike in three years and existential fears about artificial intelligence's capabilities.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street capped an up -and- down week Friday with a mixed finish for U.S. stock indexes, as elevated bond yields and oil prices weighed on the market.
The S&P 500 inched 0.2% higher after drifting between modest gains and losses for much of the day. The benchmark index also posted its second straight weekly loss.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq composite added 0.4%.
The majority of stocks on Wall Street fell, and helping to weaken them was rising pressure from the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 5% from 4.94% late Thursday after it topped the 5% level early this week for the first time since 2023.
Higher yields slow the overall economy by making it more expensive for everyone to borrow money, from the U.S. government to people looking to buy houses to businesses wanting to build AI data centers. They also tend to undercut prices for stocks and other investments.

The S&P 500 closed at 7,638, up 1.14%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 26,418, up 1.69%. Among semiconductors, Advanced Micro Devices closed at $545.09, up 6.36%, and Qualcomm closed at $188.71, up 2.09%, as chip-sector strength and memory-share momentum lifted the group.
Chip stocks rallied today after a rough week in which interest rate hikes and tech leaders' calls for a slowdown in artificial intelligence (AI) development weighed on the sector. Intel got an extra boost from a deal that may not even materialize: Even a whisper that SK Hynix might, possibly, maybe lease part of its Ohio complex or enter into a joint venture proved tantalizing to investors.
The difficulty with these types of speculative price jumps is that they often aren't sustainable. SK Hynix saying it is "exploring various options" is a long way from signing a deal. More concrete news? Barclays upgraded the stock from "Underperform" to "Overweight." Ultimately, Intel is well-placed to benefit from growing AI demand, but finding a client for its foundry business -- whether or not that's SK Hynix -- would represent a significant win.

CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), a GPU-accelerated cloud infrastructure provider, closed at $79.88, down 4.16%. The stock fell after CoreWeave announced convertible debt and a share sale, and investors are watching financing costs and infrastructure expansion.
Trading volume reached 78.3 million shares, coming in about 176% above its three-month average of 28.4 million shares. CoreWeave IPO'd in 2025 and has doubled since going public.
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,637, up 1.13%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) closed at 26,418, up 1.69%. Among specialized cloud computing and AI infrastructure services peers, Nebius Group (NASDAQ:NBIS) closed at $217.99, up 4.12%, and Iren (NASDAQ:IREN) closed at $43.48, up 2.02%, as investors kept weighing AI buildout demand against funding needs.
It's important to note why CoreWeave stock dropped while shares of its closest peers rose sharply today. The companies are in a capital-intensive spending growth stretch. Demand for high-powered compute cloud ******* e for AI is huge, and CoreWeave announced today that it would raise money to meet that demand in two ways.
Its share offering and convertible bond offering are both likely to be dilutive to shareholders. But it takes money to make money, and CoreWeave also reinforced today that it is raising prices for its compute cloud contracts.
But the debt and share issuance contrasts with the solid cash position of peer Iren, for example. Iren has built up cash from its existing crypto mining operations.

US stocks rebounded on Thursday as oil prices edged lower and a Fed rate hike on Wednesday offered some relief that the central bank was working to contain inflation.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) rose 0.6%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) climbed 1.1%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) jumped 1.7%, rebounding from a post-Fed-hike slump on Wednesday.
Stocks recovered as investors **** sed Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's hawkish rhetoric, which **** ysts said helped restore the Fed's credibility on inflation. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points for the first time in three years and projected one more rate hike this year.
The decision drew the ire of President Trump, who called for lower interest rates and said he had spoken with Warsh ahead of the FOMC meeting. "You might as well vote with the board because it's not going to matter," Trump said he told Warsh.
Oil prices, meanwhile, ticked lower as US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, which has become a key alternative route for oil stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, would be restored soon. Brent crude (BZ=F), the global benchmark, changed hands at $104 per barrel.

US stocks wavered on Friday morning as investors continued to calibrate to the Federal Reserve's first rate hike in three years and existential fears about artificial intelligence's capabilities.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) traded flat, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 0.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 0.3%.
The 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) rose 5 basis points to 5% on Friday as traders increased bets that the Fed will raise rates again in October.
Markets appeared to look past the Fed's 25 basis point rate hike this week, which was widely expected. US stock continued to climb after the Bank of ******* an raised interest rates to the highest level in 31 years.
However, ******* ysts and top CEOs aren't convinced that one rate hike (by the Fed) will be enough to bring down stubbornly high inflation. "It's not clear to me we've slayed inflation," JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told Yahoo Finance this week.
