The Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray their starting quarterback on Tuesday in the least-surprising news of the NFL offseason. Despite the Vikings branding this as a "quarterback battle," it was always Murray's job — and that's become apparent in recent days during training camp. Now it's caused unnecessary drama, as some onlookers at training camp believe that not only was McCarthy neck-and-neck in the battle, but that in recent days he out-performed the No. 1 overall pick who Minnesota signed this offseason.
There is no doubt that McCarthy was bad last year across his 10 games, and that Murray's veteran experience made him the clear-cut answer for the job, but it was covered in unnecessary consternation. The Vikings knew that Murray would be their starter when they signed him, and if there wasn't some sort of promise that he would be the starter, then Murray would have signed elsewhere. However, the Minnesota front office wanted to ease the eventual benching of McCarthy with the charade that this was really anyone's job, when it wasn't.

"I can't tell you too much of the secret sauce," pass rusher Odafe Oweh said. "Daronte has a great defense, but it's a complicated defense."

Aug. 8—A big baseball fan, Tim Plough saw the news last month that Major League Baseball had issued a memo to its teams, warning them, essentially, to use their dugout iPads properly.
According to reporting, published first by The Athletic, MLB teams may have been using the league-issued devices to access generative artificial intelligence platforms and to consult them about in-game pitch-calling decisions.
Plough, the UC Davis head football coach, said at the Big Sky football kickoff weekend in late July that he "wouldn't be shocked" if artificial intelligence use creeped into football. Many coaches said that AI has already changed the way they prepare for matchups throughout the season.
But like other coaches asked about it, Plough pointed out that deciding what pitch to throw is a whole lot less complicated than calling a play for a team on third-and-4.
"When you're talking about predicting pitches or predicting batters' hot zones, it's really one person communicating to one person, so that can be a huge advantage," Plough said. "... (an at-bat) is such a one-on-one thing that if you have an advantage over one player that can change the entire course of a game."

Everton and Crystal Palace are in talks over a potential swap deal involving Dwight McNeil and Brennan Johnson, according to The Times. The source said that Applegate, who has been living with multiple sclerosis — an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system — since 2021, is doing well.
After it was reported that Applegate was hospitalized in early March, her rep responded to the situation, saying that they had "no comment on whether she is in the hospital or what her medical treatments are." They noted, however, that Applegate has had a "long history of complicated medical conditions."
In a post shared to Instagram on April 20, Applegate addressed the concern herself.
