Marshall Manning may follow a familiar path in his football career. He has transferred to the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee — not far from the University of Tennessee, where his father, Peyton Manning, played.
Marshall will be the backup quarterback this season to Keegan Croucher, a 2027 recruit committed to Ole Miss. The 15-year-old Manning appears headed for the starting lineup next fall.

Aug. 8—PATERSON, N.J. — The Spokane Velocity's USL League One match against the New York Cosmos, which was scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday at Hinchliffe Stadium, has been postponed due to travel delays for Spokane, according to USL LeagueOne.com, and will be rescheduled to a date that will be announced at a later time.
This marks the second straight game in which the Velocity's contest has been postponed or delayed. Last week, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Spokane allowed a goal early in the period against the Chattanooga Red Wolves but the game was delayed later in the half and was postponed due to lightning strikes.
League rules dictate that Spokane's rescheduled match against Chattanooga — which has yet to be announced — will be replayed from the opening kickoff.
Led by Shavon John-Brown's five goals, two ******* ists and 19 chances created, fifth-ranked Spokane (10-2-6) boasts a four-game winning streak across all competition including League One and the USL Cup.
The Velocity will now prepare for their first-ever USL Cup knockout stage match at ONE Spokane Stadium at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Spokane hosts sixth-ranked USL Championship club Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

It's debatable whether the Canada or Chattanooga pipelines have been more valuable to Tennessee football recruiting lately because there's so much overlap between them.
UT signed four Canadian players in its 2026 class. And it has three players from Baylor School in Chattanooga.
Offensive tackle Gabriel Osenda and defensive back Jamyan Theodore fit into both categories. Osenda is from Airdrie, Alberta. Theodore is from Montreal, Quebec. They played together at Baylor School the past two seasons.
Most notably, they were Baylor teammates and close friends with David Gabriel Georges, the Canadian five-star running back that committed to the Vols in the 2027 class after a high-profile recruiting battle with Ohio State.
"It's a great relationship. Both him and I have the origins that we're Haitians (who grew up in Montreal), so we have a close bond," Theodore said. "His uncle and my father know each other and have a close bond, so we naturally built a close bond together.

Two Tennessee high school football powers have received national recognition ahead of the 2026 TSSAA season.
With Week 1 kickoff just over a month away, MaxPreps has released its national preseason top 25, highlighting the country's top high school football teams entering the 2026 season. Division II-AAA's Baylor and Brentwood Academy each cracked the rankings, with Baylor the state's highest ranked team at No. 12 and Brentwood Academy sitting just behind at No. 14.

The pair faced off in Chattanooga last December for the BlueCross Bowl state championship. Both were undefeated entering the game, but Baylor claimed a 28-24 win over the Eagles to secure the gold ball.

Jul. 10—Malachi Smith was rock-solid for the Brooklyn Nets during a 15-game stint to close the 2025-26 NBA season, but the former Gonzaga guard won't be on the team's roster next season after being waived Friday.
The Nets exercised Smith's minimum-salary team option at the end of June, but elected to move on from the 26-year-old who spent the majority of the season with Brooklyn's G League team in Long Island before a short stint with the Nets to close the year.
Smith averaged 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 ******* ists while playing 23.9 minutes per game, shooting 48.5% from the field and connecting on 43.5% of his 3-point attempts. The former Gonzaga guard made four starts and came off the bench 11 times for Brooklyn.
Smith posted his season-high in both points and rebounds when he registered a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double during a 125-108 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on April 10. He reached double figures in four other games for Brooklyn.
After spending four seasons at Wright State and Chattanooga, Smith transferred to Gonzaga for his senior season in 2022-23, averaging 8.7 ppg en route to West Coast Conference Sixth Man of the Year honors.

According to the New York Post's Brian Lewis, the Brooklyn Nets have cut guard Malachi Smith from the team. The former Gonzaga Bulldog signed a two-year, non-guaranteed deal back in April after two 10-day contracts with the organization. Brooklyn exercised Smith's minimum salary team option in June.
In 15 games (four starts) played with the Nets to close out this past season, Smith averaged 8.3 points on a shooting split of 48.5 percent from the field/43.5 percent on three-pointers/100.0 percent at the free throw line, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 ****** ists per game.
The 26-year-old will most likely have to return to the NBA G League with another franchise. He's had stops with the Portland Trail Blazers' Rip City Remix, Milwaukee Bucks' Wisconsin Herd, Memphis Grizzlies' Memphis Hustle, and the Brooklyn Nets' Long Island Nets over the last three seasons.
Smith started his collegiate career with the Wright State Raiders from 2018-19, transferred to the Chattanooga Mocs from 2020-22, before making his way to Spokane, Washington. He was named the West Coast Conference Sixth Man of the Year in 2023 before entering his name into the 2023 NBA Draft, bypassing his final season of college eligibility. Smith would go undrafted.

A Tennessee transit agency apologized and fired a part-time railway conductor after video spread online showing him celebrating Independence Day by calling the United States "the greatest country on the face of the planet" and telling anyone who disagreed they could leave.
Local ABC affiliate WTVC NewsChannel 9 reported Monday that the part-time conductor was fired after a TikTok video posted by Nathan Scherer captured him saying, "To the very, very few Americans in here, happy Independence Day. To the rest of you, welcome to the greatest country on the face of the planet, and if you disagree, you can leave."
In the video, a person can be heard responding, "Shut up." The part-time conductor was identified as Jack Peterson.

Jun. 30—A successful first half of a minor-league season can mean only one thing. The best players who got you there — in this case the one through four hitters — are moving up.
On Tuesday, June 30, the Reds made it official when they announced No. 1 prospect and catcher Alfredo Duno 's tour with the Dayton Dragons matched the speed typical of top Reds prospects. He left town after game No. 74 on Sunday for Class AA Chattanooga and took four of his friends with him.
"Really excited," Duno said. "Everybody's working to get to the next level, and I found out today that I made it. So let's keep working."
In a postgame clubhouse meeting on Sunday, manager Julio Morillo informed Duno, shortstop Carlos Sanchez, outfielder Kien Vu, corner infielder Carter Graham and starting pitcher Jose Montero that they would be in uniform for the Lookouts on Tuesday.
"Julio gave a great speech, thanked us for showing up every single day and doing what he demands of us," Graham said. "He's a great coach, and he just asked us to show up every day, play hard. He thanked us and everybody who isn't going up because obviously their time will come."

Felix Okpara is taking his elite defensive talent to the next level.
The Orlando Magic selected Tennessee basketball's premier shot blocker with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft on June 23.
He follows teammates Nate Ament and Ja'Kobi Gillespie as the third player picked from Tennessee in this draft. Ament went to the Milwaukee Bucks with the 13th overall pick, while Gillespie went at No. 42 to the San Antonio Spurs.
Okpara took a leap of faith as a teenager, coming to the United States and leaving his family in Lagos, Nigeria. His circuitous basketball path led him to high school in Chattanooga, and he spent two seasons at Ohio State before returning to Tennessee to play for the Vols.
The 6-foot-10 center had his best years with Tennessee as he grew into one of the nation's best rim protectors. As a senior, he averaged 8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and earned All-SEC Defensive Team honors.

In the shadow of Tennessee’s Signal and Lookout mountains, 8-year-old Beckham balanced on a fence for more than three hours, gripping a handwritten note and waiting for Spain’s national team to emerge.
“I love you and I look up to you,” the note addressed to Pedri and Lamine Yamal read. “Thanks for coming to my city. I hope you win the World Cup.”

Donovan McNabb ranks No. 2 after building one of the strongest multi-sport résumés of any franchise quarterback in team history. McNabb was a football star at Syracuse, but he also spent two seasons as a reserve guard for Jim Boeheim's nationally ranked basketball program. He was part of the 1996 Syracuse team that reached the national championship game before losing to Kentucky. McNabb's basketball background showed in his footwork, vision, balance, and ability to create outside structure. With the Eagles, he became the best quarterback in franchise history, leading Philadelphia to five NFC championship games, one Super Bowl appearance, and the most successful sustained run of the Andy Reid era.
Jordan Mailata checks in at No. 3 because his transition remains one of the most remarkable athletic development stories in modern NFL history. Mailata arrived from Australia as a former professional rugby league player who had never played organized American football before entering the NFL Draft process. The Eagles selected him in the seventh round in 2018 and developed him into a franchise left tackle. His rugby background gave him rare movement skills, toughness, and open-field athleticism for a player of his size. Still, his rise also required years of technical development under offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Mailata's path from rugby prospect to elite NFL tackle makes him one of Philadelphia's greatest scouting and development success stories.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has delivered a positive update on Lamine Yamal’s fitness, revealing that the Barcelona star is on course to be available for their opening World Cup match against Cape Verde next week.
Yamal has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during Barcelona’s La Liga victory over Celta Vigo in April, with initial fears suggesting he could miss Spain’s first group-stage fixture.

Knight-Swift Transportation announced Kevin Knight has retired from his role as executive chairman, effective Wednesday.
Knight was a founder of Knight Transportation and served as the company’s CEO from 1994 to 2014. He played a key role in the company’s 2017 merger with fellow Phoenix-based truckload carrier Swift Transportation. Knight-Swift acquired Chattanooga, Tennessee-based TL carrier U.S. Xpress in 2023.
Knight-Swift (NYSE: KNX) is one of the nation’s largest diversified freight transportation providers, generating $7.5 billion in annual revenue from its TL, less-than-truckload, logistics and intermodal offerings.
“I am humbled when I reflect on what we have built together and where our company stands today,” said Knight in a Thursday news release. … “As I have been approaching this transition in recent years, I knew this bridge would have to be crossed at some point.

Former NFL player Darron Lee is facing a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend earlier this month.
The complaint was filed in Hamilton County Circuit Court by the family of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo -- the victim of the murder -- according to News Channel 9 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
