The Montreal Canadiens still have one major problem if they want to pursue Dylan Larkin: the Detroit Red Wings center has not approved Montreal as a trade destination.
That has not stopped an intriguing Canadiens prospect from entering the conversation.
TVA Sports reporter Nicolas Cloutier recently pointed to Michael Hage, Montreal's 2024 first-round pick, as a player Detroit knows particularly well and would have interest in. Hage plays at the University of Michigan, putting him directly in the Red Wings' scouting backyard. He also has an unusual connection to Detroit's front office through Michigan teammate Will Horcoff, the son of Red Wings executive Shawn Horcoff.
Cloutier said he is convinced Detroit knows Hage well and believes the Red Wings would be interested in him, according to a report relaying his comments on BPM Sports.
That does not mean Hage has been offered for Larkin or that the teams are actively negotiating.

MONTREAL (AP) — Chris Kreider agreed to terms on a contract for this season with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday after mutually terminating his previous deal with the Anaheim Ducks earlier in the week.
Kreider, a Massachusetts native, wanted to get back to the Eastern Conference to be closer to family after playing last year in Southern California following a trade from the New York Rangers. The 35-year-old winger joins a young team that is coming off reaching the East final before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina.
Kreider has been booed in Montreal since colliding with Carey Price during a playoff series with the Rangers in 2014. Price did not play again that spring because of a resulting knee injury.

Chicago (11-6-5) played to a draw for the third straight match.
Sargent scored his first goal on a strike from the center of the box in the 27th minute. Nine minutes later, Sargent sent a shot past Chicago goalkeeper Chris Brady for a 2-1 lead. Sargent broke a 2-all tie in the 54th for Toronto's first hat trick since Federico Bernardeschi did so against Montreal on May 18, 2024.

Less than 48 hours after six players automatically qualified for the International Team's 2026 Presidents Cup roster, Captain Geoff Ogilvy identified the other half dozen members on Tuesday.
Si Woo Kim, the only player in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking on the 12-man team, headlines the International side at Medinah Country Club later this month.
Of the automatic qualifiers, three are major champions — Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyma and Ryan Fox, with Fox' triumph at Royal Birkdale vaulting him to No. 25 in the OWGR. The other two automatic qualifying bids went to Min Woo Lee and Tom Kim, who round out the world's top 30 players as of Sept. 1.
While Ogilvy's captain's picks bring a combined zero major championships to the table, Sungjae Im, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Corey Conners do carry experience having played at Quail Hollow in 2022 and Royal Montreal in 2024 — both tournaments won by the Americans.
The other three captain's picks are far more green in terms of history on this stage (see: none). Those players are Colombia's Nico Echavarria, ***** an's Ryo Hisatsune and Canada's Nick Taylor.

McLaren spent the first half of 2026 looking like last year's champion team in name only. The wins dried up, the new car took time to come alive and even as Lando Norris kept putting points on the board, the gap to Kimi Antonelli kept growing. Then Hungary happened, Zandvoort followed, and two weeks was all it took to change the mood of the season.
Norris has now won the last two grands prix and sits fourth in the standings at 159 points, 83 behind Antonelli and 24 behind Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who are tied at 183. That is still a mountain for Norris and McLaren to climb, but it is no longer out of the question.

McLaren is third in the constructors' championship with 263 points, 75 behind Ferrari and 162 behind Mercedes. Another strong weekend at Monza would not crown anyone, but it would force the two teams ahead to treat McLaren as a Sunday problem rather than a midfield inconvenience.

Thanks to an early goal from Casemiro and a historic night for Lionel Messi, who scored four times including two free-kicks, Inter Miami thrashed CF Montréal 7-1 in Fort Lauderdale in the MLS.
Casemiro opened the scoring in the 20th minute, rising highest to head home Telasco Segovia's corner.
The Canadians briefly levelled through Herbers, but Messi soon restored Miami's advantage with a free-kick that took a touch off Petrasso before wrong-footing Thomas Gillier.
Messi struck again early in the second half, weaving through the defence after a pass from Luis Suárez before making it 3-1.
Suárez then added a fourth, rounding Gillier after being played through by Messi, who completed his hat-trick moments later with a delicate finish over the goalkeeper.

Win or lose, Trinity Rodman has been serving looks of love at Ben Shelton all summer.
And only a couple of world-class athletes could say that they wished their schedules kept them apart more often.
"It's bittersweet," Rodman told Victory+ July 3 after Shelton's first-round loss at Wimbledon freed him up for an in-person kiss following the Washington Spirit's 2-1 win over the Houston Dash. "I wish he wasn't here, but I'm obviously happy whenever he's able to come and support me and I get to spend time with him."
The highest-paid women's soccer player in the world was less conflicted after Shelton won the National Bank Open in Montreal Aug. 13.

(NewsNation) — An advocate for AI safeguards has grim predictions about what the technology will be able to do in the next five to 10 years if the industry does not develop guardrails.
David Krueger, a University of Montreal ****** istant professor of machine learning, said the recent rogue actions of OpenAI models that hacked into a competitor's servers were a "warning shot" that shouldn't be ignored.
"The next one, these AI agents could be hacking into peoples' bank accounts, hacking into critical infrastructure … that's the sort of thing that could happen in the next year," Krueger told "NewsNation Prime" on Saturday.
AI giants sound alarm on potential cyberattacks
"But in five or 10 years, we're talking about AI systems that are like a new form of life — that are out there in the world surviving, reproducing, improving themselves. And we can't stop them. We can't shut them down. That's when it's too late."

Lionel Messi is still not slowing down anytime soon. The Argentine legend bagged a hat-trick against CF Montréal this evening as the Herons thrashed the Canadian side.
Initially it appeared the forward had scored four to finish the night, but after the match one of his goals was adjusted to an own-goal by Montréal. A stunning performance nonetheless.
Miami had been in a slump lately, but with new head coach Kily Gonzalez in the door this week, they made a statement with the thrashing of Montréal on home soil.
Messi was the star man, as usual, scoring three goals in the process, including two ridiculous finishes.
The first came from a vintage mazy run in the box before sliding the ball home.

Lionel Messi scored four goals as Inter Miami snapped their five-game winless streak with a 7-1 thrashing of struggling Montreal in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Miami have endured a rocky spell since the resumption of play following the World Cup finals, losing four of their previous five games heading into Saturday's clash in Florida.
But the reigning MLS Cup champions got back to winning ways with a confident performance against Montreal, who are languishing second from bottom in the Eastern Conference.
Brazil international Casemiro, who joined Miami after the World Cup, bagged his first goal for the champions with a 20th minute header at the Nu Stadium.
Montreal though hit back with a 37th-minute goal from Fabian Herbers, the German midfielder's low shot from the edge of the area squeezing into the bottom corner.

Lionel Messi is unstoppable. The Inter Miami star once again had a night to remember on Saturday, scoring four goals as the Herons thrashed CF Montréal 7-1.
With the haul, Messi hit 17 goals on the season, a number that pulls him to a lead in the MLS Golden Boot race. The Inter Miami captain tied and then passed FC Dallas forward Petar Musa for the sole spot at the top of the scoring standings.
Two of Messi's goals came off free kicks, one of the veteran forward's specialties. Messi pulled Miami back into the lead in the 40th minute with a curving shot that was mishandled by the Montéal defense.
Early in the second half, Messi found the back of the net again, staying upright through traffic before sending in a powerful shot.
In the 83rd minute, Messi timed a chip past Montréal goalkeeper Thomas Gillier, who surged to meet the captain but didn't get there in time.

Casemiro is off and running in the pink shirt of Inter Miami, putting the Herons ahead against CF Montréal at the Nu Stadium.
After Miami piled on the pressure in the opening 20 minutes, it took a set piece to break the deadlock.
After a couple knocks on the Montréal door, Casemiro went up strong to fire home his first goal for the club with a bullet header.
Inter Miami are heading into a new era with Kily Gonzalez in the door as the club's fourth head coach.
But getting goals from you midfield star can only help pull them back into the picture after a recent slump.

Bank of Montreal (NYSE:BMO) reported third-quarter net income of C$1.75 billion, down 25% from a year earlier, while company-defined non-GAAP adjusted net income increased 19% to C$2.86 billion. Reported diluted EPS fell 24% to C$2.38, but company-defined non-GAAP adjusted diluted EPS rose 22% to C$3.96.
The divergence primarily reflected Bank of Montreal's (NYSE:BMO) announced sale of its Transportation Finance and Vendor Finance businesses to Stonepeak. The transaction produced a C$1.09 billion pretax charge, or C$962 million after tax, primarily related to a reduction in goodwill.
Including costs **** ociated with the separate sale of 138 U.S. branches, Bank of Montreal (NYSE:BMO) reported aggregate after-tax divestiture adjustments of C$973 million. The rounded components—C$962 million and C$10 million—do not sum exactly to the reported total.
The finance-business transaction includes related loan portfolios in Canada and the United States. Bank of Montreal (NYSE:BMO) plans to retain a 19.9% equity interest, while the sale is expected to close in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
The adjusted results show that Bank of Montreal's (NYSE:BMO) operating businesses strengthened during the quarter. The bank said every business segment generated record pre-provision, pre-tax earnings, a company-defined performance measure.

In what might be the last publication of a revealing look at the credit conditions in the trucking industry, the quarterly earnings of bank BMO released Tuesday showed the stronger freight market impacting its numbers.
BMO, the former Bank of Montreal and one of the largest lenders to the trucking industry, has announced its plans to sell its transportation unit to private equity firm Stonepeak in May. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year; the next earnings release for BMO is scheduled for December 2.
While net writeoffs in the third quarter ended July 31 were barely changed from the prior quarter, declining to Ca $24 million (US $17.32 million) from $25 million, that number is more of a backward-looking figure.
Provisions and allowances, as well as the size of the company's gross loans considered impaired, which are a bank's expectations of future troubled loans and estimates of the size of its issued credit that is under pressure, showed significant declines in the third quarter.
Provisions for credit losses fell to $15 million from $41 million in the second quarter. A year ago that figure was $50 million. The $15 million figure is the lowest since the first quarter of 2023.

Provisions for credit losses fell to $15 million from $41 million in the second quarter. A year ago that figure was $50 million. The $15 million figure is the lowest since the first quarter of 2023.

Frances Tiafoe might not have his biggest support system with him before facing Arthur Fils in the Cincinnati Open final on Sunday.
This is because Tiafoe's longtime girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, was in New York as recently as Saturday night.

Broomfield made multiple posts to her Instagram Story at what looked to be a collaborative event with EOS (Evolution of Smooth, a skincare company based in New York) and Ayan's Aces, which is an initiative launched by Broomfield that organizes gatherings of women of color to diversify tennis tournaments.
Broomfield also made an Instagram post on Sunday morning where she could be seen stepping out of a car and entering the event while rocking a revealing, glittering white dress. The post was captioned, "glow was created by eosproducts (vanilla cashmere collection to be exact)."

Montreal, Canada -- Third time isn't the charm for the LA Galaxy.
LA had a player sent off for the third straight game in a 2-2 away draw with CF Montréal on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Two red cards could be bad luck, three is a veritable problem.
"There's rarely a season I can remember being with a team that's taken three red cards in a season, much less in a week," LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney expressed. "Sometimes it's poor decisions, sometimes lack of awareness, whatever."
Like Emiro Garcés and Lucas Sanabria before him, LA Galaxy Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was the culprit for the dismissal in this game. The Galaxy keeper brought down Montreal Striker Prince Osei Owusu in the 68th minute to earn a straight red card to set up a nervy finish for visiting G's.

The Montreal Canadiens have spent much of the summer resisting the urge to force another major move.
A fresh trade possibility could give general manager Kent Hughes a way to strengthen the middle of his lineup without chasing one of the biggest names on the market.
Ken MacMillan of The Hockey Writers named the Calgary Flames as one of three teams Montreal could trade with during the preseason on Aug. 22, singling out Morgan Frost as an ideal fit for the Canadiens.
Frost is coming off a career year in Calgary.

MONTREAL (AP) — Daniel Ríos scored his first goal in MLS and Prince Owusu also scored a goal for CF Montreal in a 2-2 tie with the LA Galaxy on Saturday night.
Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski was shown a red card in the 68th minute, was replaced by Novak Micovic and the Galaxy played a man down the rest of the way. LA has a red card in three consecutive games.
Owusu scored his career-high tying 13th goal this season to make it 2-2 in the 79th minute. The 29-year-old forward, who also scored 13 goals for Montreal last season, has a goal in four consecutive games and scored seven goals in the past seven.
Montreal (6-10-5) has a season-long four-game unbeaten streak.
Rubén Ramos Jr. and Maya Yoshida each scored a goal for the Galaxy (6-9-7), who had beaten San Jose 1-0 on Wednesday to snap a six-game winless streak.

Fans inside Stade Saputo were treated to a thriller on Saturday evening as CF Montreal and LA Galaxy played out a 2-2 draw.
The night started off with fans awaiting the arrival of Chilean star Alexis Sánchez, who was set to make his home debut.
The attention was first on Daniel Rios, who opened the scoring with a redirection from point-blank range.
Unfortunately for Montreal fans, their initial jubilation was cut short. The visitors struck twice thanks to goals from Ruben Ramos Junior and Maya Yoshida for 2-1.
However, things then blew up for the leaders just after Sánchez entered the pitch.

MONTREAL, Aug 22 (Reuters) - When U.S. President Donald Trump levied 50% tariffs on Canadian steel in June last year, a steel factory in Canada's mostly French-speaking province of Quebec lost about a third of its orders for bolts and fasteners in less than a week.
The factory owner - The Heico Companies - froze hiring, closed a plant in the region and laid off several dozen people, said David Jeannotte, an operations director, whose own brother lost his job. The cuts were part of 140 layoffs by the company, mainly in Quebec.
The factory's troubles reflect broader anxiety over the fallout from Trump's trade war in Quebec, which is due to hold a provincial election by October 5. But while some previous economic slowdowns in the province prompted an increase in separatist sentiment, polls show that this time around, support for an independent Quebec is at its lowest level in decades, at about 30%.
"As long as Trump will be in his chair, I don't feel that we even need to talk about that," Jeannotte said.

Here are the Montreal Canadiens and NHL news items you may have missed on Friday.
The Canadiens must avoid heading into the 2026-27 season with a three-headed monster in the crease. Okay, sensationalism aside, there's very little value to keeping three goalies in the mix, but it will be relatively difficult to find an acceptable trade partner if the goal is to move veteran netminder Samuel Montembeault. [Canadiens Goaltending: Solving The Montembeault Dilemma]
Even though top prospect Michael Hage faced a lot of pressure to forgo the remainder of his NCAA eligibility, and join the professional ranks, the 20-year-old forward made the difficult decision to remain with the University of Michigan. Some expressed frustration, wanting to see him in a Canadiens uniform sooner than later, but it may end up being the very best decision for both Hage and the organization. [Canadiens Prospect Hage Embraces Greater Expectations]
Few things are more magical than parent enjoying the company of a newborn.
Here's your daily dose of Lane Hutson highlights, featuring his very first game in the NHL.
