Ahead of the release of Zach Cregger's reboot today, there were already seven Resident Evil movies — six of them in a more action-oriented series starring Milla Jovovich, four of which were directed by her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, plus an unrelated "reboot" in 2021 called Welcome to Raccoon City that went for more of a John Carpenter vibe and was an attempt to truly "adapt" the games. There's also a Netflix TV show version that ran for a single season in 2022. Countless other works in the horror genre have unofficially cribbed from the Resident Evil games over the years. It's an incredibly influential series.
And yet, Zach Cregger, hot off his Oscar-winning original horror film Weapons, is the first filmmaker to truly feel like he's adapting the experience of playing the games, arguably the scariest survival-horror ones ever made, rather than simply incorporating story and plot elements to explain the outbreak of infected people. In Cregger's hands, Resident Evil is pure crowd-pleasing popcorn cinema, best experienced in a packed movie theater with dozens of other people reacting loudly to the madness.
The premise couldn't be simpler — and the runtime a brisk 90ish minutes — as we follow a medical courier named Bryan (Austin Abrams, proving himself to be the Bruce Campbell for a new generation) who unwittingly finds himself fighting for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in a swirl of chaos. Fans of the video games will recognize various easter eggs and nods to game mechanics, including the importance of conserving ammo and checking every last drawer for more of it.
But you don't need to be familiar with the games at all to enjoy the movie, which is an efficient horror set-piece machine that just keeps putting Abrams in increasingly concerning situations. I can't stress enough how much this is a one-man show anchored by Abrams, and he crushes it. He's in every scene, earning tons of laughs simply by reacting as a normal person would in this situation; he's a true audience-surrogate character, ushering us through the chaos. His comedic timing, paired with Cregger's ****** ured camerawork and editing, is a match made in genre-movie heaven.
I didn't expect it to be so heavily inspired by genre classics like The Thing and Evil Dead. In fact, it's a better Evil Dead movie than the last several movies with "Evil Dead" in the ****** le, nailing the horror-comedy tone that only Sam Raimi and a few others can pull off with aplomb. Automattic has a new interim chief financial officer: Jeremy Klaperman, the CFO of the company's WordPress VIP Enterprise business unit. The news, shared internally on Friday, follows last week's attempted ouster of Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg, which ultimately resulted in the departure of the board members who voted him out and other executives, including then-CFO Mark Davies. Davies was briefly interim CEO before Mullenweg retook the position.
In a Slack post, Mullenweg shared that Klaperman had previously acted as Automattic CFO when Davies had been on sabbatical. He noted that the board — whose new members have yet to be announced — will still need to evaluate internal and external candidates for the position before a final decision is made.

With control of both chambers at stake, Democrats have sought to move past the bad blood of the primaries, but in several competitive states, influential party figures have withheld endorsements or so far declined to campaign with nominees for the November 3 US midterm elections.
In Maine, the governor has yet to endorse the Democratic US Senate candidate. In Texas, a congresswoman has declined to campaign alongside the state representative who defeated her in the Democratic Senate primary. WASHINGTON – If recent history is the judge, President Donald Trump faces an uncertain legal landscape after his latest attempt to ban certain media outlets from covering him at the White House.
Trump announced in a Sept. 18 social media post that he is banning reporters from three major media outlets – CNN, MS NOW, and Politico – from the White House because he views their coverage as "FAKE NEWS."
Trump later said there wasn't a specific incident or story that prompted him to initiate the ban, which would not preclue the outlets from reporting on the president.
"It's really just ***** ulative stories over the last few years. You get sick of it," he said.
It's not the first time the Trump administration has taken such action against the press.

Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) is betting $1 billion that leather armchairs, rugs, and bookshelves can turn a recovering coffee business into a more profitable one. The company plans to upgrade as many as 9,000 North American stores into warmer, more comfortable **** es designed to bring back customers who stopped treating Starbucks as a place to sit and stay. The strategy arrives as CEO Brian Niccol's turnaround gains traction, but investors still need to see whether higher traffic can translate into stronger margins.

As we have seen the past two years, a 12-team playoff is forgiving when it comes to early season losses. An early stumble does not have to result in panic as the expanded field allows for a mulligan or two – or three.

While Arch Manning rallied the Longhorns from a 23-3 deficit after three quarters to stun Ohio State and replace the Buckeyes atop the polls, Ryan Day's team is not about to disappear from the playoff conversation. There is much sting for sure in blowing a 20-point lead, but the larger picture is one that must be in focus because everything remains on the table.

As you may have heard, Pete Alonso returned with his new team to Citi Field tonight, and the Mets lost to the Orioles 2-1. Although Jonah Tong pitched admirably, the Mets could not capitalize on their six hits and left nine runners on base.
After Jonah Tong struck out Dylan Beavers to lead off the first inning, Alonso stepped up to thunderous applause, cheers, and chants of his name. He flied out to Carson Benge in right field, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. Tong then retired Gunnar Henderson as well for a 1-2-3 start to his day. In the bottom of the inning, Francisco Lindor walked to lead off, but Juan Soto popped out, and Bo Bichette grounded into a double play for the second and third outs to end the inning.
At the top of the second inning, Jackson Holliday looped a one-out single into right field. He reached second on a passed ball by Francisco Alvarez, which had popped out of Alvarez's glove. It proved costly when Heston Kjerstad drilled a double into right field past Brett Baty. The ball made a weird hop past Baty, and Holliday scored the first run of the game. When the Mets came to bat in the second, they loaded the bases with two outs. Marcus Semien drilled a single down the left-field line, and then A.J. Ewing and Baty walked. Unfortunately, they were all stranded when Alvarez struck out on a foul tip for the third out, and the second inning ended with the score Orioles 1, Mets 0.
Alonso drew a two-out walk in the third inning, but was stranded there when Tong struck out Henderson. At the bottom of the third, Juan Soto smacked a one-out single into right field. Benge sneaked a single past third base, but both runners were again stranded when Jared Young grounded out for the third out. At the top of the fourth inning, Holliday hit a ground ball straight to Semien, but Semien could not get it out of his glove in a timely manner, and Holliday made it to first base safely. He was stranded as well, though. At the bottom of the inning, Ewing drilled a home run into right field. Alvarez smacked a ground ball to third base that Coby Mayo initially fielded but bobbled, allowing Alvarez to reach base safely on an infield hit. However, he was also stranded when Lindor struck out, leaving the score Mets 1, Orioles 1, at the end of the fourth inning.
To lead off the fifth inning, Colton Cowser hit a single that Semien knocked down but couldn't get to first base in time. The next three batters went down in order. Soto walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and, with two outs, stole second base. Young also drew a walk, but Semien grounded out to end the rally attempt there. Tong came back out for the top of the sixth inning and only needed six pitches to retire the three batters he saw. Josh Walker replaced Brandon Young for the Orioles at the bottom of the sixth, and he also worked a 1-2-3 inning. The score remained 1-1.

Congressional Republicans have a plan to pass key portions of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act before the end of this year.
The election integrity bill backed by President Donald Trump and fiercely opposed by Democrats has stalled in Congress, where Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has been reluctant to call it up for a vote, given that it's all but ***** ured to fail.
At least several Democrats would be needed to reach the Senate's 60-vote threshold to break a filibuster. But left-wing lawmakers in the House and Senate have panned the legislation as an attempt to sow doubt in U.S. elections at best and voter suppression at worst.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is now pushing Republicans to pass the bill's main mandates via the budget reconciliation process, which allows the party in power to pass sweeping fiscal policy without input from the minority due to its sidelining of the Senate filibuster. Recent trade acquisition Jaylen Brown is preparing for the 2026-27 NBA season, his first with the Philadelphia 76ers. Ahead of training camp, the former Boston Celtics forward was seen working out with famous shooting instructor Chris "Lethal Shooter" Matthews. Before Matthews became a famous coach, he played for Washington State and St. Bonaventure and also spent time in the NBA G-League.
In a video posted to social media, Brown was knocking down consecutive long-range attempts, giving Philadelphia fans something to cheer about prior to the team's season opener in October. Brown, who led the league in two-pointers attempted last season, is a career 35.8% shooter from beyond the arc. Last season, Brown shot slightly below that figure, converting on 34.7% of 3-point attempts.
Following a top-six finish in MVP voting a season ago, increased shooting efficiency from Brown will help him benefit as an off-ball contributor when LeBron James, Tyrese Maxey or Joel Embiid is in possession.

Former Houston Rockets center Montrezl Harrell appears to be attempting an NBA comeback. Although he's recently played in the BIG3, Harrell is still 32 years old and is now aiming to make another NBA roster. Harrell, who started out as a Rockets second-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, may be eyeing a reunion in Houston.
Following the conclusion of the BIG3 season, Harrell was seen at Rio Grande Valley Vipers open tryouts Saturday, competing for a spot on the team. Harrell's NBA career spanned eight seasons, two of which were with the Rockets. In those years, the former Louisville big man averaged 6.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 0.8 **** ists, 0.3 steals and 0.5 blocks. Harrell would later become one of the league's premiere sixth men, taking home the 2019-2020 Sixth Man of the Year Award after averaging 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.7 **** ists, 0.6 steals and 1.1 blocks for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Harrell's last NBA campaign came during the 2022-23 season, where he suited up in 57 games for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Of routes run in Week 1 for Dalton Kincaid, higher than any mark in 2025. This is good for most TEs, but incredible and notable for Kincaid. As a first-round TE talent, Kincaid has been limited throughout his career due to run blocking and injuries. Last season before his knee injury, he was right at 60% of the routes, good enough to be a mid-level TE1, although not ideal. After the injury, it dropped to 44%. If a ~70% route share holds, Kincaid can be the TE value of the year. His yards per route were top-three in the NFL (not just TE) and he is a part of one of the best offenses in the league. He had a nice start to the season with 130 receiving yards against the Texans defense.
The RB target split for Bucky Irving compared to Kenny Gainwell in Week 1 (and would've been eight without penalties). Gainwell was a backup RB that wasn't a focus of the offense, with only 18% of snaps resulting in a touch (Irving: 47%). Not to mention, Irving got both red-zone carries, one resulting in a touchdown. Sean Tucker is still out for now, but Irving looks to be a workhorse RB with elite receiving potential.
Gold opportunities for Chuba Hubbard: two red-zone targets and a goal-line attempt. They're the best opportunities for a touchdown for a RB, and it resulted in two here. Chicago's defense may need some help, but the workload should keep him as a weekly play as long as he holds off Jonathon Brooks. With 71% of the RB touches, anybody can have value. Before his injury last season, Hubbard began the 2025 season with nearly 20 touches per game over the first few weeks. I trust the stability of his volume going into Week 2 as a central role of the red-zone offense.

GREEN BAY – Even before he took 3 points off the board for a fourth-and-1 attempt in the fourth quarter, Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur was antsy about how much he was using rookie kicker Trey Smack.
The modern NFL has provided touchdowns over field goals. In a road environment, LaFleur was acutely aware of how much his offense was settling for field goals.
"Anytime in this league, if you kick enough field goals," LaFleur said, "you're able to get beat. That's essentially what happened. We kicked too many field goals when we had opportunities. We didn't take advantage of short fields at times."
By the fourth quarter, the Packers twice had settled for a field goal after reaching the red zone. That doesn't include a drive before halftime that started on Minnesota's 36-yard line that resulted in no points, mostly because of penalties.
When Smack connected on a 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, his fourth of the game, the Packers had only an 8-point lead. Smack's missed extra point after the Packers' opening touchdown in the first quarter in part prevented the field goal from making it a two-possession lead, but so did the lack of red zone efficiency.

Since his debut in 2018, Ronald Acuña Jr. has been one of baseball's most exciting players. His power-speed combo has made him one of the sport's best players. In 2019, Acuña fell just short of the elusive 40/40 club. In 156 games, he tallied 41 home runs and 37 stolen bases, which led the National League.
He was on an MVP trajectory in 2021. In 82 games that season, Acuña had a .990 OPS with 24 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Unfortunately, everything changed on July 10 when he tore his ACL attempting to make a leaping catch at the wall down in Miami. During his first three and a half seasons, Acuña was on the fast track to the Hall of Fame. His injury not only slowed that down, but it also raised questions about whether he'd ever be the same again.
The Braves eventually won the World Series, but Acuña was sidelined and could only celebrate from the dugout. Still, though, he received a World Series ring on Opening Day in 2022. He would return to action on April 28 against the Chicago Cubs. However, it was clear that Acuña wasn't the same player. In 119 games, he only hit 15 home runs, and his OPS dropped to .764—the worst mark of his career. For a while, it looked like the same ol' Arizona Cardinals' defense that lost nine consecutive games to end the 2025 season with inside linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. on injured reserve because of a serious injury to his ribs.
On their first possession, the Los Angeles Chargers moved effortlessly on an eight-play, 77-yard drive that included three receptions by wide receiver Ladd McConkey for 60 yards to tie the game at seven with 4:22 to play in the first quarter.
The Cardinals took a 10-7 lead on a Chad Ryland 27-yard field goal after which the Chargers traveled 76 yards, gaining 62 on nine plays and faced fourth-and-three at the Cardinals' three-yard line after the two-minute warning.
Eschewing a chip-shot field-goal attempt, quarterback Justin Herbert dropped back to pass, but before he could even set up to throw, defensive lineman Dante Stills was on him after cleanly beating guard Trey Pipkins III and sacked Herbert for a 10-yard loss.

Westwood football's Levon "Trey" Simmons III claimed TC Palm's August "Play of the Month" honors, narrowly edging out Martin County's fumble return touchdown with 55.6 percent of the vote.
On the play, Westwood quarterback Elize Pierre rolled out to his left and attempted to complete a pass to junior running back Najja Martin. The ball bounced off Martin's hands and up into the air after a collision with a Palm Beach Gardens defender.
Simmons swooped into grab the reception and got two feet in bounds before stepping out of play. Westwood went on to defeat Palm Beach Gardens 21-7 on Aug. 24.

BERLIN (AP) — Germany's federal prosecutor's office said Monday it had filed charges against a German-Ukrainian woman suspected of acting on behalf of Russian intelligence.
The woman, who was only identified as Ilona W. in line with German privacy rules, is accused of having been in contact with a full-time intelligence officer at the Russian Embassy in Berlin at least since Oct. 2023, the prosecutor's statement said.
The defendant ran a marketing agency in Berlin and was also the chairwoman of a lobbying group. As a result, she had an extensive network in military and political circles, prosecutors said.
Over the course of several years, the woman provided the intelligence officer at the Russian embassy with numerous tips about high-profile events and ensured that he could attend them — sometimes under a false name. This was intended to enable him to build his own network for intelligence purposes, the statement said.
To identify contacts and potential targets, she also attended such events herself. Furthermore, the defendant attempted to recruit individuals from the German Ministry of Defense and the defense industry for her own purposes, prosecutors alleged.

Democratic state parties announced Monday that they are launching an operation for the midterm elections they're calling the "New Battlefield Project," intended to recruit 10,000 volunteers to guard polling places in case armed federal officers show up.
Activists are planning mass protests if the Trump administration tries to interfere with voting or ballot counting. And legal scholars are distributing white papers advising judges what they should do if the government tries to seize ballots.
The unprecedented efforts are in response to President Donald Trump's equally unprecedented moves to interfere in this year's midterm elections, which include attempts to impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote and directing the Postal Service to play a central role in deciding which voters should get a mail ballot.

But the mass arrest campaign this summer did not lead to a commensurate increase in deportations -- according to preliminary U.S. government data reviewed by Reuters -- a reflection of the legal and logistical limits faced by President Donald Trump as he attempts to hit his mass deportation goals.
Even as arrests jumped to nearly 51,000 in August, setting a record for a third straight month, deportation numbers held mostly steady, averaging around 1,200 per day, the preliminary government data showed.
About the same number of people were deported per day in May, for example, when there were around 19,000 fewer arrests, according to arrests data obtained by the Deportation Data Project through a public records request and ****** yzed by Reuters.
