NEW YORK — One month before the Professional Women's Hockey League draft, Caroline Harvey and Laila Edwards were plotting.
After a whirlwind 2025-26 season, the duo were in New York as keynote speakers at the espnW summit. For over 30 minutes, they discussed winning Olympic gold medals with Team USA — where Edwards and Harvey were among the top scorers in the tournament — and their third national championship victory with the Wisconsin Badgers.
But after the panel was complete, their conversation turned to the future — and the fact that the two best friends will be separated for the first time in nearly a decade.
"That's a lot of our conversations lately," Harvey said in an interview with The Athletic last month.
At the 2026 PWHL Draft on Wednesday night, Harvey, who won Olympic MVP and the 2026 Patty Kazmaier Award as the top player in college hockey, is expected to go first overall to the Vancouver Goldeneyes. In a perfect world, Edwards, a 6-foot-1 dual threat who can play forward or defense, also lands in the Pacific Northwest, as the Seattle Torrent have the No. 2 pick. Their Team USA teammate Abbey Murphy, who was second in The Athletic's prospect ranking in March, could also reasonably go second overall.

Australia stunned Turkey 2-0 in their World Cup opener at Vancouver Stadium, with New York City FC midfielder Aiden O'Neill starting and playing the full 90 minutes for the Socceroos. Turkey were largely perceived as the favorite, with Real Madrid's Arda Güler and Inter Milan's Hakan Çalhanoğlu among their top players.
O'Neill's work rate, passing accuracy, and defensive contributions helped neutralize Turkey's creative threats while providing the platform for Australia's attacking players to flourish. The box-to-box midfielder joined NYCFC in April 2025 from Belgian side Standard Liège and has tallied seven ****** ists in 31 regular-season matches.
Australia scored on either side of halftime to begin their World Cup journey on the front foot, with goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe. O'Neill's midfield presence allowed the Socceroos to control tempo against a Turkey side expected to dominate possession through their Serie A stars.
With his complete performance, O'Neill became the third active MLS player to play for Australia in the World Cup, following former Red Bull New York midfielder Tim Cahill (2014) and former Columbus Crew defender Miloš Degenek (2022). O'Neill is one of three MLS players on Australia's World Cup squad, alongside NYCFC teammate Kai Trewin and Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington.
O'Neill has made 39 appearances across all competitions for NYCFC, helping New York City reach the MLS Eastern Conference Final last season. His transition from European football to MLS has provided him the platform to maintain his international form.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canada captain Alphonso Davies remained limited in the team's World Cup training session on Monday as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
Davies warmed up with the team at Canada's training base but remained in return to play protocol ahead of the co-host's second group match on Thursday against Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.
The left back injured a hamstring last month while playing for Bayern Munich in 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain that knocked the German club out of the Champions League semifinals.
Davies has not played for Canada since March 2025, when he tore an ACL in the CONCACAF Nations League finals. He has 15 goals in 58 games for Canada.
Canada opened the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday in Toronto. Late substitute Cyle Larin scored an equalizer for the Canadians in the 78th minute.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The PWHL’s expansion team in Las Vegas made it official on Monday by naming Kim Weiss as coach.
The 37-year-old Weiss makes the jump to the women’s game after completing her second season as an **** istant with the American Hockey League's Colorado Eagles. The team lost Game 7 of the AHL Western Conference finals to Chicago last week.
Weiss becomes the PWHL’s fourth women’s coach entering next season, doubling the league’s total from last season — with Vancouver still having a vacancy. In Colorado, Weiss was the second woman to be a full-time **** istant in the NHL or AHL, joining now-former Seattle Kraken **** istant Jessica Campbell.
She is reunited with Las Vegas general manager Dominique DiDia, as the two were teammates at Trinity College. Weiss eventually became an **** istant coach for the Connecticut-based school’s men’s team — the first woman to do so at the Division III level.
“Throughout her coaching career, Kim has consistently demonstrated an exceptional ability to develop players, build strong team cultures, and achieve success at the highest levels of the game,” DiDia said. “Her accomplishments across both the NCAA and AHL speak for themselves, and her hockey expertise and communication skills make her one of the most respected leaders in the sport.”

Scoring a goal at the World Cup finals for Australia is "a dream come true" for Watford forward Nestory Irankunda.
The 20-year-old opened the scoring with a 27th-minute strike in The Socceroos 2-0 win over Turkey in Vancouver on Sunday.
Irankunda is the youngest player to score for Australia at the World Cup at 20 years and 125 days, beating the previous record set by Brett Holman at the 2010 tournament.
"It is unreal. A dream come true," said Irankunda after Sunday's Group D victory.
"It feels amazing (to be the youngest scorer). You've got to thank the staff, you've got to thank the nation. They all believe in me to do so well and, getting that goal was amazing. It is just a great feeling."
