Last Word On Hockey's Puck Drop Previews are back for the 2026-27 season! As the regular season approaches, Last Word will preview each team's current outlook and stories to watch for the upcoming year. We'll also do our best to project how things will go for each team throughout the campaign. Today, we're previewing the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild.
There's been plenty of chatter about the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild. The main offseason rabble has been whether or not Quinn Hughes will sign an extension. Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin was able to weaponize the salary cap **** e since the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were greatly reduced. Guerin has been taking care of players like Brock Faber and Kirill Kaprizov.
However, the Hughes question hangs over the franchise's head like a cloud. The Wild rolled the dice to get the high-flying defender from the Vancouver Canucks. However, it would be a disaster if the Olympic Gold Medal winner doesn't stay beyond this season. The Wild have only made the Western Conference Final once in the franchise's history. Minnesota knows the pressure is on to at least get back there.
Guerin fulfulled his promise of making the team into a Stanley Cup contender. He managed to give Kaprizov the deal that would keep the dynamic forward in the fold. However, getting Hughes proved to be a masterstroke. It cemented the Wild as a contender despite being in one of the toughest divisions in hockey.
Minnesota looked the part of a contender by finishing 10th in scoring, fourth in defence, and seventh in points. The Wild even broke some of their bad postseason luck by getting past the Dallas Stars. However, the same old Wild came back in the second round in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Wild were exposed as not having as much depth as the Avs and not having enough team speed. Minnesota has made plenty of progress, but the team still has a long way to go.

At long last, September is finally here! We made it, hockey fans. The Chicago Blackhawks play their opening game of the 2026-27 regular season later this month in Las Vegas, and training camp is only a couple of short weeks away. Hallelujah.

She also notched 15 digs and her first career ****** ist, and enters her senior year with 152 blocks and 531 kills for her career.

The senior libero served up 16 aces and logged 18 digs in her first six sets of the season. Baker, whose efforts contributed to wins over Fort Wayne South Side, Fort Wayne Northrop and New Haven, also had a couple ****** ists. She has 707 career digs.

Rui Oliveira won the final stage of the Volta a Portugal in his home city of Porto before dedicating the win to Finlay Tarling's family.
British rider Tarling, 19, died after an accident during stage eight of the race on Friday.
The final two stages went ahead with the family's blessing, although Tarling's team NSN Development withdrew from the race.
Race leader Alexis Guerin was not challenged on the final day so the French rider secured the overall win while Oliveira prevailed in a sprint finish to claim the stage win.
"First I want to give my condolences to Fin's family, friends, team - everyone," said the UAE Team Emirates rider. "It's been a rough couple of days. I can imagine what they're suffering.

Chaminade women's volleyball coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke on Wednesday announced the addition of six players, including four transfers, for the upcoming season.
Setters Allison Panter and Shannon Sheehy enrolled at Chaminade in January and played for the Silverswords beach volleyball team.
Panter previously attended Portland State and Sheehy began her collegiate career at San Francisco.
The other two transfers are outside hitters Anna Panchartek (Southeastern Louisiana) and Siria Guerini (Telematica Pegaso in Italy).
The incoming freshmen are Cheyenne Chanche of Harlan High in San Antonio) and Hailee Tamayo of Point Loma High in San Diego. Both play defensive specialist/libero.

Former Guerin Catholic outfielder Ian Taylor is betting on himself in hopes that his gamble will lead to the major leagues.
Twenty rounds of the 2026 MLB Draft came and went without Taylor hearing his name called. The state champion outfielder was committed to play at George Mason and had already gone through freshman orientation when his representation let him know the Toronto Blue Jays were interested in signing him as an undrafted free agent.
Scouts from the Blue Jays have been in contact with Taylor since the spring, coming out to Guerin to watch the 5-foot-9, 185-pound outfielder take batting practice, but once he went undrafted, he wasn't sure if turning pro was in his immediate future.
Last Thursday, Taylor's rep began working on a contract. By Friday the deal was complete and Taylor officially signed Tuesday morning, becoming a member of the Blue Jays' organization.
"It was an absolute roller coaster," Taylor said. "On Thursday we figured out that there's a chance we can do this, but then obviously you know you have to negotiate some things with the contracts and figure all that out.

It's the type of confidence that negates the fact that the Golden Eagles were playing in their first ever state **** le game, and the team in the opposite dugout, Andrean, was going for its state-record 10th championship.
The Golden Eagles wasted little time establishing that they were not only up to the moment, but they were ready to shine on the biggest stage in program history.
Given a three-run lead after the first half inning, senior starter Tate Troxell dominated the 59ers, striking out 12 and allowing just one run over six innings, leading Guerin to a 9-3 Class 3A state championship win.
It's the type of confidence a team has when it knows it's done everything in its power to prepare for the moment ahead. INDIANAPOLIS – Andrean coach Dave Pishkur has not experienced many days like Friday in his 45-year coaching career.
Pishkur, the coach for all nine of Andrean's record-tying nine state championships, watched his top-ranked team fall in an early hole and never recover in a 9-3 loss to No. 2 Guerin Catholic in the Class 3A state championship on Friday afternoon at Victory Field.
"That's a very good team," Pishkur said of Guerin Catholic. "I'm happy for them that they won their first state championship. I'm happy for our guys that we got here. We just weren't good enough."
It is a rarity that Andrean is not good enough when it arrives at Victory Field. The 59ers have won all nine of their state championships since 2005 – all in Class 3A – with runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2023. The loss in 2004 was a 3-2 nailbiter against New Palestine. The 2023 game was decided by a 4-2 count against Silver Creek.
