SINGAPORE, July 28 (Reuters) - Chip stocks tanked across Asia on Tuesday, rattled by the threat of Chinese competition and worries about who's paying for the AI boom, while sliding oil prices did little to allay nerves about U.S. rate ‌hikes potentially starting as soon as this week.
South Korea's KOSPI dived almost 10% to a three-month low, triggering a circuit breaker on the way ‌down as it heads for its largest monthly fall since the Asian financial crisis in 1997. The index had more than tripled over 12 months to June, but it has shed more than a third of its value since that peak.
Shares in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, which are under extra pressure in a market transformed by leverage, made losses of more than 12% as their stratospheric rally unwinds in a hurry.
Japan's Nikkei slid about 4%, touching a two-year low, with the selloff following a 2.2% drop for the Philadelphia Semiconductor index on Monday.

The schedule for the cricket events at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, **** an, has been announced, with defending champions India receiving direct entry into the quarter-finals in both the men's and women's T20 tournaments.

I'm coming around to the view that you need to have a really good reason for a centerback to take a penalty.

Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute to give the Netherlands a late lead. What a moment – his partner recently announced that they'd recently lost their second child during her pregnancy – and he collapsed to the turf in tears after scoring and was mobbed by his entire team, substitutes included. Issa Diop scored a 91st minute equalizer for Morocco. The Netherlands played an oddly conservative game, not their usual style. In the periods where they had control, they didn't really fashion much in the way of chances. Morocco were the protagonists for most of the match. The penalties were pretty poor, all around. Bart Verbruggen thought he'd saved an early one, but the ball bounced undernearth him and he ended up "kicking" it into the net with his heel as he landed from his dive. You don't see that often!

Tokyo-headquartered Itoham said in a statement the deal for family-owned Greenlea amounts to around NZ$800m ($450.8m) and is subject to regulatory approval.
Struck through Anzco Foods, another New Zealand meat processor owned by Itoham, the transaction is expected to be finalised by the end of August.
Hamilton-based Greenlea, which otherwise trades as Greenlea Premier Meats, generated revenue in the year through September 2024 of NZ$615m and net profit before tax of NZ$59m, according to supplementary details provided by Itoham.
Greenlea operates two processing plants in the Waikato region for grass-fed New Zealand beef.

Japan's Nikkei jumped 4.6%, South Korea's KOSPI gained 5.4%, while futures on the U.S. tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, which includes both Micron and Qualcomm, gained 2.1%.

Good morning, TSF! I have a confession: the concurrent kickoffs overwhelmed me a bit. I tried to dual-screen it on monitors two and three and it was too much alongside my normal workday stuff on the main monitor. That’s saying something, too — the way my brain is wired can usually handle that much input. Did anybody manage the multi-screen setup yesterday?
