The proposed rule filed by the U.S. Forest Service would rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which bans logging, roads and mining in undeveloped forests, and move authority to local national forest managers, according to a press release from the Department of Agriculture.
The U.S. is suffering one of its worst years for wildfires, with 7.3 million acres (3 million hectares) burned in around 49,000 fires through August 17, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Host Hotels & Resorts (NASDAQ:HST) held its second-quarter earnings call on August 6, and the numbers gave management enough confidence to raise full-year guidance by more than expected. Comparable hotel RevPAR climbed 7% to $251.53 in the quarter, and CEO James Risoleo pointed to luxury resort demand and a run of high-profile events as the drivers. That combination pushed the company to lift its 2026 RevPAR growth range by 125 basis points at the midpoint, to 4.75% to 5.25%.
Every demand segment moved in the same direction. Transient revenue rose 6.9% to $559 million, the strongest growth in seven quarters, while group room revenue grew 7.4% to $332 million on a sellout of 1.1 million room nights. The World Cup added roughly 160 basis points to second-quarter RevPAR growth, and RevPAR in World Cup host markets jumped 15% in June against 12% elsewhere. Maui kept recovering too, with RevPAR up 14% and occupancy up more than 8 percentage points, and golf revenue there now sits 9% ahead of levels seen before the wildfires.
Behind the quarter sits a longer bet on renovated properties. Host Hotels has poured about $2.1 billion into 34 hotels across its Marriott and Hyatt portfolios, a program expected to generate 60% of hotel EBITDA in 2026, and the 21 properties already stabilized have gained roughly 9 points of RevPAR index share on average. That reinvestment, plus a $500 million gain from selling its Four Seasons resorts, funded a $0.72 per share special dividend in July on top of the regular $0.20 payout, all while leverage held at 2.2 times.
CFO Sourav Ghosh was direct about what comes next, saying the company expects margin comparisons to moderate in the second half largely because rate growth will not repeat at the same pace. Much of the first half's strength leaned on tailwinds that fade as the year goes on, including the World Cup and a busy events calendar.
Costs are creeping in from other directions too. A Kona low rainstorm in Hawaii is expected to cause $27 million to $32 million in property damage, and while insurance should cover most of it, remediation alone runs about $2 million. The Four Seasons condo development at Walt Disney World, with 28 of 40 units closed, saw its 2026 EBITDA guidance trimmed to $16 million to $20 million from $20 million to $25 million purely on closing timing. Wage rates are still climbing 5% for the year, and labor makes up about half of total hotel operating expenses.

Britain has not faced anything like the devastation wrought across Spain, France and elsewhere in Europe this year, but as the country endures the fifth heatwave of what is expected to be its hottest summer ever, it is dealing with more outbreaks of fire than ever before.
Phil Garrigan, chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, said the number of wildfires had now exceeded last year's total of 1,017.
"We've well surpassed the figures from the previous high of 2025," Garrigan said, without detailing this year's latest figure.

Miller (5-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) got the first finish of the card when she submitted Oliveira (7-5-1 MMA, 0-4 UFC) in the second round on the prelims at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. She also gave an impassioned callout for help in her new home area of Spokane, Wash., which is experiencing devastating wildfires started by a suspected arsonist.
Miller has been training with the team at SikJitsu in Spokane, which has produced the likes of Michael Chiesa, an "Ultimate Fighter" winner like Miller, and Julianna Peña, who also won "TUF" and became a UFC champion. But she said making sure everyone who's helped her to this point needs to be shouted out.
"I came from 10th Planet San Diego and they've worked with me on every ounce of my game. I will always appreciate my roots, San Diego, my home, and my new home, Spokane, Wash.," Miller said at her post-fight news conference. "Training with SikJitsu has been a life changer for me. I've learned so much, from my striking and even to my submission game."
Miller's submission of Oliveira, a rear-naked choke, was significant for lots of reasons. But chief among them, she had a choke lined up earlier this year in Houston, but couldn't finish. Carli Judice went on to take a unanimous decision.

The Bald Range wildfire was burning out of control and had grown to about 5,000 hectares as of early Saturday, after prompting evacuation orders in other regional districts this week. The fire originated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Summerland, according to BC Wildfire Service.
The district of Summerland, which is about 45 kilometers from Kelowna, said it lost power on Saturday due to the impact of the wildfire and issued a boil water notice for residents, saying untreated water had entered the system after the water treatment plant was bypassed due to the wildfire threat.
Summerland has a population of about 12,000, according to a 2021 census.
Several regions in Canada, including Ontario and Quebec, have battled blazes this year as hot, dry weather fueled wildfires in dense forest areas. Canada has received **** istance from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand to help fight them.

A man charged with starting one of the wildfires in Spokane, Washington, that have destroyed hundreds of buildings planned the crime for weeks and researched when the weather would be best for igniting it, police said.
Aaron Farinacci expressed that "fire is powerful, beautiful, and that things that go through fire experience a kind of rebirth," Spokane County Detective Michael Drapeau said in a court filing Wednesday, recalling his interview with him.
Farinacci, 37, is charged with starting the Old Trails Fire, one of three fires in the Spokane area that have burned more than 850 homes and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. He is also charged in connection with two smaller fires ignited in the summer of 2025.
He was scheduled to be arraigned on three first-degree arson charges Thursday, but his lawyer asked for a competency evaluation before he enters a plea. Spokane Superior Court Judge Jeremy Schmidt said he would review that request. He set bond for $2 million, ruling that Farinacci was a risk to community safety, a flight risk and that there was potential for a violent offense.
Defense attorney Colin Charbonneau did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Sydney Sweeney has spoken out over the devastation caused by the wildfires in her hometown of Spokane, Washington.
According to local authorities, the fires have consumed more than 8,000 acres across Spokane County, with three main blazes destroying more than 700 structures. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
Taking to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Sydney put a spotlight on the news, emphasising that around 65,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.
"Spokane has always been home to me. It's where I grew up, where my family still lives, and where so many of the people and places that shaped me are," she began. "The devastating fires have changed countless lives in ways that are hard to put into words. Thousands of families have lost their homes, their belongings, and places of business, including members of my own family. This devastation is something our community has never experienced on this scale."

It was another day of Seattle Seahawks training camp in Renton, albeit not in the best of conditions. The terrifying and deadly wildfires in Spokane have impacted and will impact the Seattle area throughout the week. Winds have blown the wildfire smoke in a westerly direction, which has decreased the air quality through thick throughout Western Washington on an otherwise very warm Tuesday. With Wednesday's forecast set to be worse in terms of air quality, there is a chance that practice could be held indoors, but we'll see how it goes. As I type this from my hotel room in Renton, the air quality index (AQI) is a moderate 99, but that's borderline unhealthy.

Bo Nix is looking sharp as ever too. Day 2 figures to bring some more excitement as the weekend fan attendance tends to be a bit more electric.
Scotty Payne will be updating this post today as I'll be braving the eastern Oregon wildfires to find a path to the Redwood Coast this week. I'll face any danger for some fresh air at this point. Wish me luck and I'll be back at it on my laptop after this (hopefully) nine hour already-detoured drive.

Canadian travel to the U.S. dropped about one-quarter in 2025 compared to the previous year, a new report shows.
The U.S. has been the primary destination for Canadian international travel due to proximity and warmer weather, according to a report released July 22 by Canada's national statistics agency. In all, Canadian residents have returned from the U.S. 25.4% less in 2025 compared to the previous year.
Though Canada has historically been one of the U.S.' closest allies, Trump has imposed tariffs on goods from the northern neighbor and teased making it the 51st state of America. He recently reignited the trade tensions, announcing a 50% retaliatory tariff on a range of goods scheduled to go into effect Aug. 19.
"Following the change in the U.S. administration in early 2025 and the implementation of America First policies, Canadian travel sentiment shifted abruptly," the report states. The authors found the return crossings in early 2026 stayed at levels similar to late 2025, indicating a persistent sentiment shift.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Part of a major interstate highway in Oregon was closed Monday due to a wildfire that forced a small town to evacuate, one of dozens of blazes burning across the state.
The Fox Fire forced the closure of Interstate 84 for some 70 miles (113 kilometers) between Baker City and Ontario near the Idaho state line before reopening later in the day, the Oregon Department of Transportation said. I-84 is a key thoroughfare, running from Portland in the west through the Columbia River Gorge and into eastern Oregon before crossing the Snake River eastward through Boise.
The transportation department said the wildfire remains active in the area and that intermittent closures were still possible.
Challenging wildfires have burned across the Western U.S. this summer, following months of dry weather, a record lack of snow in some areas, hot spells and erratic winds. Federal authorities announced Saturday that a fourth firefighter died of his injuries after he and several colleagues were overcome last month by a fast-moving wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border.

July 18 (Reuters) - Ontario Premier Doug Ford said U.S. criticism of Canadian efforts to stop the "terrible scenario" of spreading forest fires in his province and choking smoke across a broad swath of the United States was "absolutely unacceptable."
"We're trying to get through this," Ford said on Saturday, adding that if the situation were reversed and the U.S. were facing wildfires, "we're going to be down there to support our neighbors."
President Donald Trump blamed what he called incompetent Canadian forest management for the smoke and said on Friday he would add the "incalculable cost" of dealing with the pollution to existing tariffs on Canadian goods. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ford's remarks.
Ford said at a press briefing that 655,000 hectares (1.6 million acres) of forest were burning across Ontario, Canada's most populous province.
