Auburn football hosts Southern Miss on Saturday for its 2026 home opener, with kickoff slated for 6:45 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
Auburn fans, young and old, will flock to the Plains to celebrate the Tigers' first home game of the season and will battle high temperatures and possibly a few raindrops. AccuWeather's Saturday forecast for Auburn calls for a high temperature of 85 degrees and a low of 71. The "realfeel" temperature will be 97, and the winds will blow south-southwest at 6 miles per hour.

Number-one ranked Ohio State is traveling to Austin to take on the fourth-ranked Longhorns this weekend in what has become the most-anticipated college football game of the season so far.
According to ticketdata.com, the cheapest tickets available for the game are $463 - nearly three times higher than any other college football game this week. However, not only are the tickets hot, but the weather will be too. Game day temperatures in Austin will rise to dangerous levels, with heat index values rising to nearly 110 degrees.
Saturday's temperatures will be similar to last week's game against Texas State, during which Austin-Travis County EMS transported 13 fans from DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium to surrounding local hospitals due to heat-related illnesses.
Temperatures in Austin are expected to be in the mid-90s at noon Saturday before rising to 100-102 degrees by 3 to 4 p.m. Due to elevated humidity levels, the heat index, or "feel-like" temperature, is likely to reach as high as 108 degrees. There will be a slight breeze, as southeast winds are expected at around 10 mph.
Shown are the expected heat index values across Texas at 4 p.m. Saturday. Austin will likely be experiencing temps that feel like 108 degrees. (WeatherBell)

Tennessee's football game against Furman on Sept. 5 tied the second-highest kickoff temperature at Neyland Stadium in recorded history (1950-present), according to the University of Tennessee.
The Vols', 56-9, season-opening victory was the fifth game at Neyland Stadium with a kickoff temperature at or above 90 degrees.
The highest kickoff temperature at Neyland Stadium was 91 degrees versus Florida on Sept. 24, 2016.
Other football games with 90-degree temperatures were against ETSU on Sept. 8, 2018, Southern Miss on Sept. 8, 2007 and Wyoming on Sept. 4, 1999.
101,915 were in attendance for the Tennessee-Furman game, marking a 28th consecutive sellout at Neyland Stadium and a streak that dates to Sept. 17, 2022.

In the quantum computing investment sector, two popular stock picks are IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI). Both of these quantum computing upstarts have a long way to go before becoming a viable investment option. However, by looking at their respective technologies, investors can get an idea as to which company has a better chance of reaching the finish line.
Let's take a look at these two and see which is the better stock pick.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The primary way most companies do quantum computing is via superconducting. This involves cooling a particle in a chamber to near absolute zero temperatures so it can be controlled for the purposes of quantum computing. Rigetti utilizes this technique, but that's also the same process that many of the legacy tech companies are using. That may prove to be a problem, as Rigetti is competing against some heavyweights with huge resources.
IonQ is taking a far different approach. There's really ****** ody else doing what IonQ is doing, which could be good or bad. Instead of cooling a chamber, IonQ uses lasers to pinpoint and cool a particle, then utilizes an ion trap that's similar to a maze to trap the particle and utilize it for quantum computing purposes. This yields superior accuracy, but at the cost of processing speed.

College football game ends in bizarre tie after extreme heat stops overtime originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
College football delivered one of its strangest results Saturday, but the final score had nothing to do with a controversial penalty, replay review or missed call. Colorado School of Mines and Washburn finished in a 16-16 tie after dangerous heat conditions prevented the Division II programs from playing overtime in Topeka, Kansas.
The game was originally scheduled for noon CT before officials moved it to 7:05 p.m. It was later shifted again, this time to 9:05 a.m., in an effort to avoid the worst of a heat wave affecting the region. Even the early start was not enough.
The wet-bulb temperature exceeded the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics ****** ociation's safety protocols by the end of regulation, according to Yahoo Sports. The heat index had climbed to approximately 107 degrees. Because temperatures were not expected to return to an acceptable level for several hours, the schools agreed to end the game instead of waiting until the evening to play overtime.
Colorado School of Mines had an opportunity to avoid the unusual finish.

Blame the heat for a tie between Colorado School of Mines and Washburn on Saturday.
No, really. Blame the heat.
The two Division II teams agreed to end their Saturday morning game tied at 16-16 after Colorado School of Mines missed a game-winning field goal late in the fourth quarter. The game was set to go to overtime, but the wet bulb temperature had already exceeded the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics **** ociation's temperature protocols. Washburn, the home team, is a member of the MIAA.
The game had little chance of resuming anytime soon if the teams wanted to play overtime. Thanks to the heat dome that's currently occupying the middle part of the country, the temperature in Topeka was set to be around 100 degrees on Saturday with the heat index not dropping below 95 degrees until after sunset at 7:49 p.m.
The game was originally scheduled for a noon kickoff before it was pushed to 7 p.m. earlier in the week. With a forecast for temperatures still well into the 90s at that time and Colorado School of Mines' travel to take into account, the teams then agreed to play the game at 9 a.m. in an attempt to avoid what ended up happening anyway.

SIERRA DE LA PANDERA, Spain (AP) — Enric Mas added to his lead of the Spanish Vuelta on a mountainous 14th stage won by Marco Brenner on Saturday.
Mas tacked some 25 seconds onto his advantage over Primož Roglič after dropping the four-time former winner on the final climb and linking up with a front-runner from his Movistar team.
Félix Gall crossed with Mas and moved into second place ahead of Roglič in the general classification. Gall is 2 minutes, 6 seconds behind Mas, with Roglič falling to 2:10 behind the leader.
Brenner won the grueling 151.9-kilometer (94.4-mile) stage in high temperatures after he bettered his fellow breakaway riders and edged Santiago Buitrago at the finish. Brenner had time to zip up his Tudor team suit just as he crossed the line in 4 hours, 15 minutes, 9 seconds. It was the 24-year-old German rider's first win at a grand tour.
The stage was held in an area just north of Granada that was under a heat warning with highs forecast for 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) in Jaen, where the day's racing started. Riders tackled a pair of category-two climbs as they rode through a landscape of sunbaked olive groves before a final ascent to the category-one Sierra de la Pandera.

The Southeast is dealing with a brutal heatwave this week, with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and heat indexes in the triple digits. The good news for Auburn football fans is that the heat will not be a major factor in Saturday's Week 1 matchup between the Tigers and Baylor Bears.
Auburn football opens the 2026 season against the Baylor Bears on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia, where the temperature is expected to reach 97 degrees, with a "real feel" of 107 degrees, according to AccuWeather. However, the game will be played indoors at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, giving fans a more comfortable setting as they watch the Tigers battle the Bears to open the Alex Golesh era.
Fans partaking in pregame tailgating outside the stadium will face the heat, however. The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for Atlanta will remain in effect until Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. Because of this, morning temperatures for outdoor tailgates will rise into the low 90s with very little wind.
The temperature will then jump to 97 degrees during the game and will sink to a low of 75 by Saturday night, with a slight chance of a shower between 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. CT.
Auburn football has won nine straight season-openers, dating back to 2017's 41-7 win over Georgia Southern, and has won 21 season openers since 2000. The Tigers look to extend that streak to 10 games on Saturday by taking on the Baylor Bears in Atlanta, Georgia, at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ABC.

Baron Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Baron Global Opportunity Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. The fund achieved a strong quarter, gaining 26.7% (Institutional Shares), exceeding a 14.9% gain for the MSCI ACWI Index (the Index), and a 19.8% gain for the MSCI ACWI Growth Index. YTD, the Fund is up 20.6% compared to gains of 11.3% and 10.6% for the benchmarks, respectively. In mid-2026, market patterns show similarities to the previous year, following three years of over 25% gains driven by a healthy economy and AI investments. Elevated geopolitical risks persisted, with a pullback likely. A tariff-related market dip was followed by a recovery, reflecting a growing market indifference to geopolitical uncertainties. Similarly, airstrikes against Iran and subsequent tension led to an initial market sell-off, yet a lull in hostilities led to a strong market rally. The Fund noted significant outperformance, credited to stock selection and sector allocation, with 1,173bps of overall outperformance relative to the Index. It excelled in developed markets while underperforming in emerging markets, particularly due to a spectacular rise in Korea. The Fund remains optimistic about its investments and seeks attractive opportunities. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Baron Global Opportunity Fund highlighted DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) as a new addition. DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) manufacturers engine products, including complex precision cast components and nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys for aerospace, industrial gas turbine and transportation industries. On September 1, 2026, DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) closed at $41.48 per share. Over the past month, DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) declined 20.69%. DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) has a market capitalization of $6.02 billion.
Baron Global Opportunity Fund stated the following regarding DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
We also initiated a new position in DPC Holdings PLC (NYSE:DPC), a leading manufacturer of precision-cast superalloy components – the turbine blades, vanes, and structural castings that must perform under very harsh operating conditions including very high temperatures (1000c) and high pressure. These parts go into both commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines (IGT) that generate electricity. The company occupies a hard-to-replicate market positioning as a critical supplier of the inner parts of an engine that only a handful of qualified manufacturers in the world are capable of producing.
Since the company began its turnaround in 2020 after over a decade under poor ownership, with the leadership of CEO Mike Quinn, who spent over a decade at Precision Castparts, and Co Chairperson of the Board Dirkson Charles, who built and currently is CEO of aerospace and defense proprietary parts provider

The TSSAA heat policy for Tennessee high school football will come into effect with temperatures soaring across the state.
Middle Tennessee is under a "major to extreme heat risk" through Sept. 5, according to the National Weather Service in Nashville. The NWS forecasted a high of 101 degrees on Sept. 3 and 100 degrees on Sept. 4.
The heat index could reach 110 degrees in that span, which is why some TSSAA football Week 3 kickoff times have been pushed back from the traditional 7 p.m. slot. Several high school games in Knoxville have already seen changes in start times.
The TSSAA restricts outdoor football activity when the heat reaches a certain level.
Here's a rundown of the TSSAA heat policy.

NEWBURGH, Ind. — One of the best players in Castle High School football history will be honored on Friday.
Graig Hoffman will be inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame during halftime of the Knights' game against Bosse on Sept. 4. The 1993 graduate was a standout two-way lineman for Hall of Fame coach John Lidy before a successful collegiate career at the University of Louisville.
More: What to know for third annual Panther Classic high school girls soccer tournament
He becomes the fifth member of the Hall of Fame connected with Castle, joining Lidy, Joe Huff, Deon Chester, and Scott Bonnell. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, but is subject to change due to high temperatures this week.
Hoffman was a dominant two-way starter in the trenches for the Knights, earning All-State honorable mention and All-Star Game selection as a senior. That final season was cut short by a knee injury – Hoffman played the first three before requiring midseason surgery. The 1992 Kiwanis Award winner returned for the final three games.

On Saturday, USC opened up its 2026 season by handling San Jose State 42-26 at the Coliseum. With the victory, the Trojans started off the year 1-0.
One of the talking points following the game had nothing to do with what happened on the field itself, but rather in the crowd. Due to extremely hot temperatures, an early kickoff, and not exactly a marquee opponent, the Trojans drew their lowest attendance in nearly eight years.
On Sunday, USC issued a statement to USA TODAY regarding the Coliseum crowd.
"We understand the factors that impacted Saturday's attendance," the statement read. "We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season."
The good news is that the factors that played into Saturday's low attendance should not be a problem the rest of the season. The bad news, however, is that the Trojans play a Friday game this week against Fresno State, which also typically tend to draw smaller crowds.

The Welsh Rugby Union has issued pitch safety advice to community clubs for the new season after a record-breaking summer.
Wales recorded its hottest ever day on 24 June with temperatures soaring to 35.9C in Cardiff, while July was the driest since records began 190 years ago.
The weather has left rugby pitches across the country bone dry, with surfaces as hard as concrete.
With the obvious injury risks to players, the WRU has written to all community clubs with guidance on how to ****** s the conditions before next week's opening matches.
It also says clubs can reschedule fixtures without risking any sanction up until mid-September, while match officials can overrule decisions on safety grounds.

Meghan Markle could find it difficult to adjust to the weather and to the thought of her mother staying in the US after her return to the UK. The ******* ss of Sussex has been living in Montecito, California, with Prince Harry and their children since 2020. The royal couple moved to the US in 2020 and embarked on their independent ventures. Now, they are reportedly planning to relocate to the UK. While the move isn't permanent, sources say that Markle could find the transition challenging.
A report by Express suggests that Andrew Lownie believes Meghan Markle could find it difficult to adjust to life in the UK. After residing in the US for six years, Prince Harry and Markle are reportedly preparing to return to Britain.
Lownie shared his views with The Daily T Podcast about the Sussexes' return to the UK. He said, "I can't see Meghan enjoying a Cotswolds winter with the rain coming down, and her mother a long way away. So I just can't see this working."
The US tends to have warm to mild weather year-round and doesn't experience freezing temperatures in some regions, including Montecito. Meanwhile, the UK is known for its distinctive cold and rainy weather, especially from December to February. Plus, Markle's mother, Doria Ragland, lives in Los Angeles, California, which is relatively close to Harry and Markle's residence.
Now that the Sussexes are reportedly moving to the UK, they will set up a home there. They are also planning to enroll their children in British schools. Harry and Markle are expected to stay in the UK for a while.

Slough, England — Residents of the small industrial town of Slough, just west of London, told CBS News the soaring temperatures have been difficult to bear this year as Britain records its hottest summer ever. But emerging research suggests Slough may have had it particularly rough, as it sits next to the second largest data center hub on the planet.
"Slough is very hot. Every year we think this is the hottest, and then the next year it gets hotter than the last," Nabeel Nawaz, who runs a restaurant in the center of the town, told CBS News as he sweltered through a July heatwave with temperatures in the 90s.
The low hum of cooling units on Slough's massive data center hub, less than two miles from the heart of the town, provides a non-stop soundtrack for the surrounding area.
The coolers regulate the temperature of the hundreds of computer servers inside the cavernous buildings, of which there are about 40 in Slough, transferring excess heat from the machines into water or air and then venting or evaporating the heat into the atmosphere outside.
Many of the data centers around the world work this way, and all that excess heat could be creating a "heat island effect," increasing local temperatures by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with extreme localized temperature spikes of up to 16 degrees, according to research published by scientists at the University of Cambridge earlier this year.

Thiel Macro LLC spent about $76 million to acquire roughly 1.2 million American depositary shares, making Vista Energy its second-largest holding behind Amazon (AMZN) and its only non-U.S. stock.
The stake also comes as Thiel deepens his ties to Argentina.
