World number 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed on court and had to retire from her first-round match at the Memphis Classic due to high temperatures.
Russian Alexandrova, who was the number one seed, was trailing 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 5-4 against 16-year-old compatriot Kristina Liutova in a match where temperatures reached 34C.
The match was initially paused as Alexandrova tried to continue, before she received a time violation as she took too long to serve amid her struggles.
But in the middle of the next point, Alexandrova fell to the ground and needed immediate medical attention.
The 31-year-old was well enough to stand but had to forfeit the match, which had lasted more than three hours.

FC Bayern Women kicked off 2026/27 pre-season with a 4-1 victory over RB Ōmiya Ardija at the NACK5 Stadium in Tokyo as part of their Allianz Women's Tour. Pernille Harder and Jovana ******* janović gave Germany's double winners the advantage in the first half, before Katharina Naschenweng added a third in the second period. Minami Munakata's header earned the hosts a consolation before Alara's penalty in added time wrapped things up in ******* an. Sarah Mattner, Kassandra Potsi, Ella Rauscha and Regina van Eijk all made their debuts for Bayern during the game.
Bayern got off to the better start in their first game of the new season in hot summer temperatures. José Barcala's side controlled proceedings before Momoko Tanikawa dribbled her way through the home defence and looked for Harder, who couldn't make the chance count. The Dane made no mistake at a corner a minute later as she was found at the far post and pounced on the bouncing ball to open the scoring.
Damnjanović had a great opportunity to double the lead after 19 minutes when played clean through by Harder, but she was unable to beat goalkeeper Yuria Ito. Klara Bühl got into the action when she struck the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the box.
Bayern remained on the front foot but Ōmiya had some promising moments, mainly through Hanon Nishio's three efforts off target. The Munich Frauen finally stretched their lead on the stroke of half-time when Tanikawa found ******* janović to finish at the far post.
Barcala made some changes for the second half but it didn't change the pattern of play. Nishio remained a lively outlet for Ōmiya, but she was well marshalled by captain Glódis Viggósdóttir and the defence. A Bühl corner was met by the head of Magdalena Eriksson but failed to hit the target, before Tanikawa won a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area but couldn't beat the jumping wall.

EJEA DE LOS CABALLEROS, Spain, July 17 (Reuters) - Firefighters backed by 30 aircraft struggled on Friday to contain a wildfire in northeastern Spain that has ripped through an area the size of San Francisco, forcing ‌the evacuation of more than 1,000 people, as recent heatwaves left vegetation tinder-dry across much of Europe.
Successive early summer heatwaves, which many scientists ‌blame on human-driven climate change, have pushed temperatures to unprecedented levels in large swathes of the continent, causing water shortages, crop damage, wildfires, and thousands more deaths than normal.
According to the Reuters Climate Monitor, the average high across Western Europe on Friday was forecast to be 27.5 degrees Celsius (81.5 degrees Fahrenheit), which is 4.2 C above the normal high for July 17 from 1961-1990.

The dog days of summer have rightfully earned that nickname. The combination of conditioning workouts, practices, strength training and sweltering temperatures all endured with months still looming before the start of the men’s college basketball season can quickly turn into a monotonous grind.
Entering his second year in college basketball, Andrija Jelavic is experiencing it for the first time. This time last year, Jelavic was still in his home country of Croatia, finishing up school and finalizing when he could actually enroll and start practicing at the University of Kentucky.
That process wasn’t finalized until the fall. Now at Ohio State after one year with the Wildcats, Jelavic is getting an understanding of what he missed a year ago and how that impacted his season at Kentucky.
“This is my first summer of college basketball,” Jelavic said after a July 9 practice at the Schottenstein Center. “When I was late at Kentucky I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot, but being here for a month already I feel like it helps you a lot to be here. Now I understand that I missed a lot by not being there in the summer at Kentucky.”
It wasn’t until late August that Jelavic was able to start practicing with the Wildcats. When the season got underway, Jelavic was a rotation player for the first two months, briefly fell out of the playing rotation and then was inserted into the starting lineup for the final 20 games of the season.

Energy regulators warned data centers could be cut off as a heat wave swept the mid-Atlantic states.

Ashburn, Virginia, is in the heart of America's "data center alley." Over the July 4 weekend, diesel generators at a Digital Realty data center switched on as temperatures spiked.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fast-spreading blaze prompted evacuation orders Friday afternoon in a sparsely populated area of Los Angeles County.
The brush fire sparked around 1 p.m. under dry and scorching hot conditions in a remote high desert region about 45 miles (72 kilometers) northeast of LA, according to the LA County Fire Department. Temperatures in the area soared to nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
The fire reached about 2,700 acres (1,092 hectares) by evening, Angeles National Forest officials said on the social media platform X. It's unclear how many buildings are threatened by the blaze.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter at a YMCA in Los Angeles County.
The nearest town to its east is Piñon Hills, a census-designated community of about 7,200 people in San Bernardino County. Parts of the town were under an evacuation warning by Friday evening.

The Three Lions will face 90 minutes of soaring temperatures and humidity in Miami for the World Cup quarter finals - but recreating the conditions in a laboratory, I could only manage a third of that.
The University of Brighton's Environmental Chamber can simulate a range of hot and cold temperatures from -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F), as well as different humidities and altitude conditions.
So, with the weather conditions a constant topic of discussion this tournament, I was tasked with seeing how I would fair in a 30-minute treadmill test.
In the end, I had to call it at 27 minutes.
With monitors measuring temperature and heart rate, the test for heat acclimatisation was a run at 9 km/h (5.6 mph), with a 2% incline.

The data showed that American cities—including Houston, Dallas, and, to a lesser extent, New York and Philadelphia—were most at risk. Indeed, a heat dome brought 100-degree-Fahrenheit temperatures to the Northeast last week. Donal Mullan, a climate scientist at Queen's University Belfast, told NPR that players "can overheat, and match officials as well."
Several other outdoor professional sports have faced weather delays, some severe enough that games, tournaments, or matches had to be moved to alternative locations or postponed by a day. Below are a few of the most severe cases by sport.

Hurricane Irma (2017) was a Category 5 hurricane that formed on August 30 and dissipated on September 15. The game between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was scheduled to be played at Hard Rock Stadium (65,000 seats) in Miami on September 10. The storm forced the game to be postponed until November 19.

PAU, France (AP) — Dutch rider Olav Kooij won the fifth stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish on Wednesday, while Norwegian rider Torstein Traeen kept the yellow jersey on a day when the peloton largely took it easy.
Kooij was put in a strong position to attack by his Decathlon CMA CGM teammates and held off German Max Kanter and Belgian Tim Merlier in a dash to the line. They all finished in just under 3 1/2 hours.

After hot weather affected events and safety of the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend the past three years, the events will be pushed back a week starting in this fall.
This year’s events will take place Oct. 10-17, “Improving the likelihood of ideal race day conditions and strengthening the participant experience,” organizing body Twin Cities in Motion said Tuesday in a statement announcing the change.
For 45 years, Marathon Weekend has been anchored to the first Sunday in October, but since extreme heat forced the cancellation of Sunday events in 2023, the marathon has been run under elevated Event Alert System readings.
The decision to push back the event was made after a multi-year review that looked at long-term climate data and recent race-day trends with the cooperation of climatologists, public safety agencies, medical partners, sponsors, tourism organizations, runners and other community stakeholders. Even modestly cooler temperatures, TCM said, can meaningfully reduce heat-related risk.
“Protecting the health of every runner, from first-timers to elites, is our top priority,” TCM co-medical directors Dr. Jacob Kastner and Dr. David Supik said in a statement.

As France braces for another heatwave, it's barely recovered from the last one. Meteorologists expect scorching temperatures to return this week, and with them, the same question that was asked repeatedly in June: why won't France just turn on the air conditioning?
Some people are already taking things into their own hands. Dozens of people lined up outside several Lidl stores across the Paris region on Thursday, all hoping to get their hands on an air conditioning unit. In Aubervilliers, a Paris suburb, the doors gave way under the pressure of the crowd, and fights broke out among shoppers. "I saw people get trampled," one shopper told Le Parisien newspaper. "I was in shock, I got shoved around in every direction, and unfortunately I didn't leave with an AC unit," another said.
Only around 24% of French households have air conditioning according to France's energy transition agency – up from 18% just two years ago, but still far below the roughly 50% seen in neighboring Italy.
Alexia, a 26-year-old living on the outskirts of Paris, says she caved when she found out another heatwave was on the way. "All the air conditioners I had seen to potentially buy were out of stock. So I rushed to get another one before there was absolutely none left."
Meanwhile, just 7% of French schools are equipped with AC, and thousands closed their doors last week as temperatures in the classroom became unbearable. With more than 2,000 excess deaths recorded over six days at the peak of the June heat, according to health authorities, France's cultural resistance to AC has started to soften.

LES ANGLES, France (AP) — A large wildfire in the south of France prompted Tour de France organizers to ban fans from attending the finale of the third stage of cycling's showpiece race on Monday.
After a couple of days in Spain, the race enters France with a stage to the Pyrenees town of Les Angles, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from a fire that has burned almost 4,000 acres of land.
"The exceptionally large wildfire currently raging in the Pyrénées-Orientales is requiring a massive mobilization of wildfire-fighting resources, internal security forces, and all government agencies," Tour de France organizers said. "The top priority remains the protection of people, property, and natural areas, as well as bringing the fire under control."
As a result, organizers decided that once the peloton reaches France for the last 40 kilometers, the publicity caravan — a 10-kilometer-long procession of sponsor vehicles that precedes the race — will not operate. Only riders and vehicles essential to the race will be allowed on the route, and spectators have been asked not to gather on the roadside or at the finish area.
Stage 3 started from the Spanish town of Granollers, where temperatures reached around 35 degrees Celsius, race organizers said, quoting the Spanish Meteorological Agency. It features a 9.3-kilometer (5.8-mile) ascent up Col de Toses at an average gradient of 6.5%. The climb is ranked as Category 1, the second-hardest level behind Hors Categorie (which means beyond classification).

I was covering the match between France and Paraguay on Saturday from the right far corner. At the final whistle signaling the end of the match, an emotional Kylian Mbappe shouts out, expressing his joy after France won on his penalty kick and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals.
I flew to the match in Philadelphia from Boston on Saturday, the morning of America's birthday, which also happens to be my birthday. The temperatures in the stadium for the July 4 afternoon match were almost 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) — and that was in the shadows. For me, there was no shade. My position for more than three hours was in the far right corner, under the bright hot sun. Due to the extreme heat, a photographer two seats beside me who couldn't stand it anymore and was led out of the pitch position. For a soccer match on this level, especially when it comes down to just one goal, you have to stay focused until the very end. One moment could have changed the whole story of this hard-fought match. After 10 minutes of additional time, I stayed on the key player of the match — Mbappe — and waited for his reaction using a 400mm long lens.
The moment Mbappe shouts out, his joy encapsulates the entire match in a single image. Paraguay played the entire match using question tactics, repeatedly provoking Mbappe. The physical play was so rough that after the match when the Paraguay goalkeeper extended his hand to congratulate Mbappe, the French superstar swatted it away. This photo at the final whistle captures the sense of satisfaction that came pouring out after winning the match despite the questionable tactics.

If you will allow me to put my armchair meteorologist hat on, I read an article somewhere about how this heat dome that's been causing temperatures to skyrocket in recent days has been collapsing since Thursday. As such, that's been causing enough of a disruption in the atmosphere to where thunderstorms are even more likely to pop up than usual.
So with that being said, it's not particularly surprising that the weather is a bit spotty over Truist Park in Cobb County and as of right now, the tarp is reportedly on the field and has been since around noon.

Morocco snuffed out co-host Canada's World Cup dream to book their place in the quarter-finals on Saturday as France braced for furnace-like temperatures in their last-16 clash against Paraguay.
Two goals from Azzedine Ounahi and an injury-time effort from Soufiane Rahimi sealed a 3-0 victory for Morocco in Houston that sends the African champions into a quarter-final meeting against the winner of France and Paraguay's game in Philadelphia later Saturday.
Morocco, who had produced a superb performance to eliminate the Netherlands in the last 32, were made to work hard for victory against the Canadians, who dominated the early exchanges of a physical contest at the NRG Stadium.
But the Atlas Lions made the crucial breakthrough just after half-time when Ounahi swept in a powerful low shot from the edge of the area.
Ounahi made victory inevitable eight minutes from time with his second before Rahimi's late goal on the counter-attack left Canada heading for the tournament exit.

On Saturday, the FIFA World Cup staged a round of 16 match in early July in Philadelphia, where temperatures approached 100 degrees Fahrenheit and heat indexes ticked even higher. Kickoff was set for 5 p.m. Eastern Time, the hour projected to have the highest heat index of the entire day.
Fifteen days later, they will host the final in East Rutherford, N.J. at 3 p.m. Eastern, two days shy of what is, on average, the New York City suburb’s highest average temperature of the year.
It’s understandable that FIFA wants to put it’s biggest games in primetime European TV windows. But doing so in outdoor stadiums, in a nation that has so many elite indoor venues capable of hosting matches, is downright reckless.
Of the 16 venues being used, only four are truly climate controlled. (The Los Angeles Stadium is covered but uses engineering and natural climate features to control temperature). There are at least a half dozen others that could’ve been included to allow matches in the hottest average markets remain night-time only affairs.

Joey Chestnut has once again been crowned winner of Nathan’s hot dog eating contest after stomaching 66 franks in intense 100-degree feels-like temperatures.
Pat Bertoletti finished second by eating 51 hot dogs and Australian James Webb placed third with 47.5.
In the women’s competition, Miki Sudo captured her 12th championship by scarfing down 38.75 hot dogs, up from 33 last year. Michelle Lesco placed second with 22 and Domenica Dee third with 21.5 dogs eaten.
By the time Chestnut, now an 18-time champion, took the stage, the midday heat in Coney Island neared 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) with high humidity, affecting bun texture and eaters’ fitness levels.
He earned a $10,000 prize for his win but didn’t surpass his previous record, which fans had hoped for to mark America’s 250th birthday.

Saturday’s round of 16 match is the first that will be played outdoors in that weather, although Friday’s matches in Miami and Kansas City were also notably hot, each around 87 degrees at kickoff.
Temperatures are supposed to slightly drop before Sunday’s match between Brazil and Norway in New Jersey.
The round of 16 match will have some of the harshest weather conditions of the tournament. Other matches have been impacted by rain and lightning delays, including one in Philadelphia during France’s group stage win over Iraq.
FIFA has not indicated moving the match any later in the evening to avoid the high temperatures. Such a decision wouldn’t have collided with any other matches, as the only other Round of 16 game on Saturday was Canada–Morocco, which kicked off earlier in the afternoon in Houston.
