Things turned awfully testy during the late innings of Wednesday night's 4-2 Mariners victory over the Detroit Tigers, which evened the pivotal series for both teams in an American League playoff race that is heating up more and more with every passing day. A half-inning after Cal Raleigh was drilled in the ribs with 95 mph four-seam fastball by Enmanuel De Jesus — and no warnings were issued — Gabe Speier pegged Gleyber Torres with a 96 mph four-seamer of his own, leading to an exchanging of words and the benches clearing. Speier and Dan Wilson both ended up ejected. As Kate said in the recap, we'll see if this has any ramifications Thursday.
Speaking of throwing at people, Framber Valdez gets the start for the Tigers on Thursday. His first season in Detroit hasn't gone quite to plan, with many of his numbers across the board taking a step back. At the All-Star Break's conclusion, I wrote on expectations, and their virtue as an exercise with this franchise towards a more hopeful future near and far. These Seattle Mariners, 3.0 games back of the AL West and the third Wild Card spot alike, have earned little and less belief. They've played poorly, wasted chances, and frittered opportunities to cleanse their palates. Much has rightly been made of the necessity for the core players to perform at or near the standards they've set for several years. But Seattle is giving up massive production on the fringes, and they've forced themselves into an uncomfortable, desperate position.
It is time for them to call up Michael Arroyo.
Seattle needs right-handed hitting, and with J.P. Crawford sidelined at least for several weeks, there is no easy solution at third base. Brendan Donovan returns on Tuesday to rotate around the field, but it's hard to look at the lineup as constructed and see anywhere for him to play more frequently than the hot corner. Arroyo has played some third base, but it's realistically not where he could be thrown in, although his defense is less egregious and more limited if asked to play second base or corner outfield. But they need his bat, because the Mariners need to take some risks, and rotating Weston Wilson, Victor Robles, Rob Refsnyder, Leo Rivas, and Mitch Garver through to take flaccid swing after flaccid swing is a Wile. E. Coyote kind of road that the Mariners have been slamming into the wall of all summer. The Rainiers' roster is stocked with similar players who've struggled to set themselves apart this year and over many years, from Connor Joe to Patrick Wisdom to Stuart Fairchild, along with injured options like Ryan Bliss and Brennen Davis. With Luke Raley seemingly ailing, the M's have to be more aggressive to rev up their offense before it's too late.

Arroyo is a 21 year old Colombian ~utilityman whose profile made him the most-heralded hitting prospect from his burgeoning baseball nation since Colombia's first and greatest star: SS Edgar Renteria. The 5'10, compact youngster has never been at the top of Seattle's prospect list, but has hit his way into top-100 status nationally over the past couple seasons, with an approach I first wrote about in the winter before the 2024 season. This weekend, nearly a dozen Texas A&M players were selected in the 2026 MLB Draft, including former Maryland transfer infielder Chris Hacopian, who was selected 11th overall by the Washington Nationals, and veteran RHP Weston Moss, who will join his teammate in Washington after the Nationals selected him in the 11th round.
The Aggies' top three hitters this season, Hacopian, Caden Sorrell, and Gavin Grahovac, were all picked in the first three rounds, with Sorrell going 62nd overall to the Chicago Cubs, while Grahovac, who missed all but one game during the 2025 season, looks like an absolute steal for the Los Angeles Angels, who selected him 81st overall in the top of the third round on Saturday.
Last season, Grahovac started all 57 games, slashing .339/.429/.722 with 22 home runs and 74 RBI, and led the Aggies with 78 hits and 26 multi-hit performances, which included 20 multi-RBI games. Compared to his freshman season, the California native looked more confident at the dish, as his .754 slugging percentage ranked first in the SEC.
Heading home to start out in the minor leagues, Grahovac's potential is through the roof. In full agreement with the D1Baseball staff, the versatile infielder's drop to the third round was one of several surprising outcomes but should not hinder his development, especially given his improvement in 2026.
"Even the much lessened swing and miss of Texas A&M’s Gavin Grahovac couldn’t elevate his value beyond No. 81 overall. As much as his pick was a surprise fall, it was a steal as far as we’re concerned. The Aggies’ slugger lowered his strikeout rate from 23.1% to 16.5% while raising his ISO. This dual improvement is rarely accomplished, especially in a major conference."

Texas A&M absorbed another major hit to its pitching staff on Tuesday, as junior right‑hander Clayton Freshcorn was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round (No. 564 overall) of the 2026 MLB Draft. The Aggies did well to reinforce the rotation and bullpen through the transfer portal, but with Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, and now Freshcorn all drafted, a full‑scale overhaul on the mound feels inevitable.
Still, the door isn't completely closed on Freshcorn's return. With NIL now a legitimate factor in draft‑return decisions, Texas A&M could have enough incentive to entice the All‑SEC closer back for a senior season, especially under a new pitching coach and a clear opportunity to elevate his stock.
Freshcorn has long been more than a one‑inning weapon. Earlier in his career, he competed for a weekend rotation role, and another year in Aggieland could give him the chance to showcase that versatility. A strong senior campaign, one that expands his usage beyond high‑leverage relief, could push him into a higher draft tier in 2027.
He certainly has the résumé to build on. Freshcorn finished the 2026 season as a Stopper of the Year finalist, recording 12 saves across 27 appearances. He posted a 4–3 record, 2.82 ERA, and 56 strikeouts, earning All‑SEC honors and a spot on the NCBWA First‑Team All‑America roster.
Whether he signs with St. Louis or returns to College Station, Freshcorn's decision will shape the Aggies' pitching identity heading into 2027 and determine whether Texas A&M retains one of the nation's most reliable late‑game arms.

The United States celebrates its 250th anniversary at a time when the men's soccer team has a plausible shot at chasing an improbable World Cup ******* le. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, defender Tim Ream compared the squad to the nation it represents.
"[W]e've said this as a group with all our different backgrounds, where we all have grown up, it's a true representation of what America is," Ream said, via Jeff Carlisle of ESPN.
The roster includes players born inside, and outside, of the country. Two of them — like Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest — were born abroad as children of U.S. service members.
"It's a melting pot of people, of personalities, of characters, and like I said, it's a perfect representation of what the U.S. is and what it's about," Ream added.

Even though it's fairly straightforward, soccer's offside rule can be confusing for casual fans. And even controversial at times.
The United States had two goals called back for offside in its 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night. However, it also had a goal that was initially disallowed for offside ruled good in its group stage win over Australia thanks to FIFA's automatic review process in the World Cup.
Here's how the offside rule works and why the infraction isn't always immediately called during games.
Simply put, two players from the opposing team have to be between a player and the goal at the time the ball is played forward by a teammate. There are exceptions, but we'll get to those in a moment.
Wednesday night, Folarin Balogun had a goal ruled out in the first half because the only Bosnian player between him and the goal when Weston McKennie passed him the ball was goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Here's how close it was.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The 4th of July isn’t until Saturday. But you would’ve sworn it had arrived sooner if you were on the grounds at Levi’s Stadium Wednesday.

The festive atmosphere amid a sea of red, white and blue supporters dominated the scene. The only thing missing were fireworks and a hot dog eating contest. Which by the way FIFA officials should have rigged up considering it was in world champion Joey Chestnut’s backyard (he’s a graduate of nearby San Jose State).

Actually, there were plenty of fireworks. More on that in a moment.

It was against that backdrop that the United States began its quest for true glory at the 2026 World Cup. The Americans had no excuses as they sauntered onto the pitch against Bosnia and Herzegovina on a seasonably warm summer’s late afternoon.

Of course only in FIFA’s bizzarro world does the USA play a match on Canada Day and Canada plays a game on the 4th of July when our neighbors to the North face Morocco in Houston. Makes perfect sense, right?

But if you want truly bizarre, look no further than Folarin Balogun’s night on the pitch.

The talented striker who was born in Brooklyn, has lived most of his life in the United Kingdom and has his place on Team USA because of his birthright citizenship, something affirmed the day before by the U.S. Supreme Court, scored the first goal, had a second called back for offsides, would’ve had a third had his shot not hit the crossbar and had his night cut short when Brazilian referee Raphael Claus showed him the red card in the 64th minute following a harsh challenge, forcing the Americans to play with 10 men the rest of the way.

It left the majority of the sellout crowd of 68,827 scratching their heads wondering what had happened to the man who had dominated the match up until he was shown to the exit. It also meant Balogun’s services will not be available come Monday when the U.S. faces Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle in the Round of 16.

But they managed to survive the shorthanded situation as Malik Tillman’s free kick in the 82nd minute found the back of the net and was the capper of a 2-0 victory over the Dragons.

“I think it showed how strong a team we are,” said defender Chris Richards. “We got down a man but ****** ody got stressed out.

“It was unlucky for Flo but it is what it is and it was very important that we kept a clean sheet. But the cherry on top was Malik’s free kick.”

Freeman said of his big goal that helped put the game on ice: “We talked about going around the wall or going over the wall. But I practiced it in training and I’m glad it went in.”

For the Americans, everything seemed to be in place to begin the big push forward. There were no suspensions to worry about. Christian Pulisic’s left calf was fine, thank you as he returned to Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI. And the familiar faces we’ve grown accustomed to seeing — Balogun, Freeman, Richards, Tyler Adams, Matt Freese —rejoined Weston McKennie as

Malik Tillman provided the U.S. men's national team — and its fans — the opportunity to exhale when his 82nd-minute free kick found the back of the net as 10-man U.S. beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, securing its place in the round of 16.
When Tillman stepped up to his late free kick, his right foot was bloodied — cut from getting stepped on earlier in the game. That right foot had no problem curling his shot over the wall and past Bosnia goalie Nikola Vasilj.

"I was in pain, but my shoe was cut, so this is why I changed it," Tillman said postgame, sporting a blood-soaked sock. "Yeah, someone stepped on it. It's just pain, I guess. Feeling better now."
Tillman was a standout performer once again for the Americans during this World Cup. His all-around game and strong rapport with Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie have really given the U.S. an eye-pleasing dynamic.

Hills three-star linebacker Weston Port opted to stay close to home, moving from Orange County to Westwood to attend UCLA. However, he went on an LDS-sponsored mission first. However, with multiple coaching changes at UCLA in the interim, Port ended up being a little more open to another opportunity.

Michigan football is still weeks away from playing games, but the Wolverines – and new coach Kyle Whittingham – landed a victory in the recruiting battles on Monday, Jun 29 as three-star linebacker Weston Port committed to U-M in the class of 2027.
Port, from San Juan Capistrano, California, was previously committed to UCLA, but opted to reopen his recruitment after the Bruins hired Bob Chesney as coach. Port announced his commitment to the Wolverines via social media.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker is ranked by 247 Sports in its composite rankings as the No. 54 player in California, the No. 69 linebacker nationals and No. 684 overall.

Michigan has added three-star linebacker Weston Port, who had signed with UCLA, to the 2027 class.
Port, who announced his decision Monday, signed with the Bruins in December 2024 but in May he re-opened his recruitment because of the program's coaching change. The San Juan (Calif.) Hills linebacker, who is 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, was rated three stars by 247Sports Composite.
"Michigan for me has always been one of the schools on the 'Mount Rushmore' of college football," Port wrote in an Instagram post. "Lots of thought and sincere prayer has gone into this decision and I feel that Michigan will be the best home for me for these next 4 years."
He currently is in Spain on a two-year mission and will enroll at Michigan in January 2027.

As Alejandro Zendejas looks for his first action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he found an unusual way to make a happy headline.

LONDON, June 22 (Reuters) - The dollar held firm on Monday as the first round of U.S.-Iran talks fuelled investor optimism for a deal, while the yen was stuck near 40-year lows and the pound slipped after UK Prime Minister ‌Keir Starmer said he would resign.
Mediating nations Qatar and Pakistan said the U.S. and Iran agreed to a roadmap towards a final ‌deal to end their conflict within 60 days, although investors fretted about threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to restart the war in the Middle East and Tehran's announcement it had closed the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices fell nearly 2%, leaving Brent crude futures at $79.1 a barrel.
"The physical market remains tight and that should provide some support, but flows in FX and commodities will continue to be heavily influenced by developments in the energy complex," said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone.

IRVINE, Calif. – A glorious and bright Tuesday in Orange County brought with it a special contingent to take in portions of U.S. Men’s National Team training as the group continues preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage showdown with Australia on Friday, June 19 at Seattle Stadium.
Joining the cluster of media and broadcast members were friends and family of USMNT players. Tim Ream's children ran on the patch of grass just outside of where the training pitch was blocked off for the team. Tina McKennie, one of the stars of the second episode of the HBO Documentary “U.S. Against The World: Four Years with the Men’s National Soccer Team,” watched practice with a proud smile, filming her son, Weston, as the midfielder warmed up with his teammates.
The close-knit, supportive atmosphere at the Orange County Great Park reflects what it’s been like for the U.S. to host FIFA World Cup 2026. Having a base camp in Southern California has given more family and friends access to offer their support and create that comfortable feeling of being close to home.
“Being here has been amazing,” forward Tim Weah said. “You have your loved ones and family around, you have your teammates around, and you have your supporters. There’s nothing like being at home. It’s definitely a wonderful feeling.”

An American college student who went missing during a family vacation in ***** an has been found dead by search-and-rescue volunteers, marking a tragic end to a frantic dayslong search across forested mountains.
James "Weston" Higginbotham, a 20-year-old junior at Auburn University and a passionate environmentalist, was traveling in the Kyoto area with his family when he vanished while exploring the city alone – shortly after having a disagreement with his mother over her use of AI to help with navigation, and the natural resources such a tool requires.
After authorities scaled back resources from the search, the family launched its own efforts to locate Weston with the help of local residents and a privately hired search-and-rescue group.

The 20-year-old Auburn University student was last seen on May 29 while the family was on a trip to celebrate his younger brother's high school graduation, Nancy Higginbotham previously told USA TODAY. The family was supposed to leave ******* an on June 4 but extended the trip since Higginbotham went missing.
A search effort was launched with local police sending helicopters and volunteer search teams across hilly terrain. Nancy Higginbotham previously said her son may have been emotionally distressed and was an "experienced hiker."

Texas A&M's postseason run ended at the hands of USC in the College Station Regional on Monday night, as second-year coach Michael Earley and his veteran lineup looked pedestrian at the plate, and the pitching issues continued to be a major issue in both losses to the Trojans.
On Tuesday, Earley made the swift decision to fire **** ociate head coach and pitching coach Jason Kelly, who, after two seasons, quickly became a villain for the Aggie fan base, while the team's ERA only got worse after the 2025 campaign, ending at 5.24 paired with 90 home runs allowed.
Even worse, starting pitcher Shane Sdao's play declined after multiple injury-plagued seasons, and he finished the year with a 7.03 ERA; he did not look confident in several starts down the stretch. While the pitching staff dealt with several injury issues, including losing Caden McCoy before the season began, it's crystal clear that moving on from Kelly was the best decision.
Just hours after Texas A&M's loss, the Aggies gained back one of their former players in TCU transfer Jack Bell, and while this move is just the first of many, keeping pitchers Weston Moss and Clayton Freshcorn in the fold to pair with star sophomore Aiden Sims should be the first priority, outside of adding new arms.
One name to watch? Texas State RHP Wade Cooper, who, during his freshman season with the Bobcats, ended the year with a solid 4.72 ERA paired with 73 strikeouts. While he will garner plenty of attention, Texas A&M should be the team to beat on logistics. Cooper would immediately compete for a starting job or key bullpen role.
