The Southwest faces a barrage of intense rain this week as rounds of storms are tapping into unusually moisture-rich air being pulled north from Baja California, after flash flooding in New Mexico killed three people early Wednesday.
Officers responded at around 12:30 a.m. local time to a report of three people washed away by flooding near Newcomb, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation. Police discovered two adults and one juvenile on scene, the Navajo Police Department said in a statement. All three were ****** ounced dead. The department declined to provide further details about the deaths when contacted by CNN, citing concern for the family’s privacy.
🌧️ Get your local forecast from the CNN Weather app
Rainfall over Newcomb began Tuesday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. and lingered intermittently until just after midnight. The area saw around 0.5 inches to 1 inch of rain in total, with most of it falling within an hour Tuesday evening.
Wednesday’s storms prompted a rare Level 3 of 4 risk of flooding rainfall for parts of Arizona and New Mexico, including Phoenix and Tucson. Phoenix had not faced a flood risk that high since 2022.

Last season, Arizona soccer (2-3-1) ended the season ranked No. 239 in Division I in goal differential at -6. With Big 12 play still to come, the Wildcats are No. 188 with a -1 goal differential. That's lower than their first opponent this week.
Northern Arizona (2-3-1) comes into Thursday's match ranked No. 159 with a +1 differential.
NAU is a team Arizona head coach Becca Moros and her Wildcats see a lot. Not only do the two teams play each other during the regular season most years, but they also face off during spring games.
If the last regular season game between the two is any indication, Arizona should have the opportunity to get itself right against the Lumberjacks. The Wildcats edged past NAU by the score of 1-0 in an exhibition in Flagstaff last season, but they had much more success when the two teams met in Tucson during the regular season two years ago. That match was a 5-0 Arizona victory. The last time the Wildcats scored five goals was almost exactly a year ago when they defeated GCU 5-2 on Sept. 14.
Last week's match against Dartmouth proved that it may not be so easy, though. Moros and her players felt they did enough to win that match, but they didn't capitalize on their chances. They outshot the Big Green 14-1 and had a 5-1 edge in shots on goal, but Dartmouth's only shot went into the net.

Arizona football is back. The Wildcats took down NAU in their week 1 matchup 35-7. The defense was stout allowing zero points from NAU's offense. Northern Arizona got seven points from a pick-six off of the Wildcats' backup quarterback. Seth Doege's offense was sharp in the first half but slowed down in the second half.
Brent Brennan's group won the program's 5th straight season opener to make it to their ranked matchup with Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars healthy and undefeated.
The Wildcats' Heisman hopeful Noah Fifita played lights out again in this one. Fifita was 22 for 29 passing, threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Fifita had his first of many lasts this week as he played in his last home opener in Tucson.
"Noah Fifita is such a good player…Nothing he does surprises us." said head coach Brent Brennan after the win in his post game press-conference.
Fifita will need to be sharp again next week against BYU but if he performs at his usual level, Heisman hopeful could turn to Heisman dark horse.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Noah Fifita threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns, Kedrick Reescano ran for two scores and Arizona opened the season with a 35-7 blowout over Northern Arizona on Saturday night.
Coming off a nine-win season, the Wildcats (1-0) kicked off their third year under coach Brent Brennan with a dominating performance.
Fifita, the rare quarterback to play all five seasons with the same school, finished 22 for 29 before sitting out most of the fourth quarter. Arizona's defense held Northern Arizona to 193 total yards — minus-seven rushing — and sacked Ty Pennington five times, including 2 1/2 by Chase Kennedy.
The Wildcats jumped on the Lumberjacks (1-1) early.
Fifita hit Tre Spivey on a 20-yard touchdown on Arizona's opening drive and found Brandon Phelps on a 21-yard score in the second quarter. Fifita also had an 11-yard run, setting up Reescano's 1-yard dive that put the Wildcats up 21-0.

Arizona women's basketball's 2027 class will have plenty of size. The Wildcats received a commitment from 6-foot-2 Canadian forward Ashley Vande Ven on Sunday. The four-star player joins 6-foot wing Brieana Brown and 6-foot-4 power forward Celsy Colombo in Becky Burke's next recruiting class.
Vande Ven is ranked No. 82 in the ESPN SC Next 100. She has a scouting grade of 92 from the service.
Vande Ven is also rated as a four-star recruit by Prospects Nation. While she isn't in their top 60 players, she is part of the site's Elite 150. She is not ranked or rated by 247sports or Rivals.
"Our Canadian hoopers from British Columbia have made the trip across the border to compete and train with EIE since the beginning," Prospects Nation managing editor Chris Hansen wrote. "This year the duo of Puneet Deol of Surrey, B.C., and Ashley Vande Ven of Langley, B.C., made arguments they can compete with anyone in the lower 48 and are on their respective PN Watch Lists as well."
Although Vande Ven is from British Columbia in the Western part of Canada, she will come to Tucson from Crestwood Prep, a sports-focused high school across the country in Toronto. Crestwood produced former UConn star and current WNBA player Aaliyah Edwards and current Duke All-American Toby Fournier.

Savannah Guthrie was in the mood for some tennis as she made a rare public appearance on the red carpet on Aug. 25 in New York City.
The longtime "Today" show coanchor was spotted at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens for a special event where five-time consecutive US Open champion icon Roger Federer played alongside Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.
Ransom notes: The full Nancy Guthrie ransom notes are now public. Here's what they say.
The veteran TV journalist wore a black midi dress with a square neckline and vibrant floral pattern featuring roses, peonies, hydrangeas and more. She accessorized with several bracelets and layered necklaces, including one with a heart pendant.
The event marked Guthrie's first red carpet appearance since the kidnapping of her 84-year-old mother Nancy Guthrie, who was last seen at her home near Tucson, Arizona on Jan. 31.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Here in the office of Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege, you will hear the story of a college football species that has practically gone extinct.
Doege, who played quarterback at Texas Tech a decade and a half ago, points to the sofa up against the wall. That's where Noah Fifita was sitting seven months ago after Arizona completed its surprising 9-4 season, when Doege asked a question that would determine both of their futures.
"There's no doubt he's the best quarterback in the league, so people are hitting this guy up to tamper, to say, 'Hey, we'll pay you $3.5 million to come play for a year," Doege told Yahoo Sports. "And you know how it is. When you go 9-4 on a team that was picked dead last in the Big 12, now all the coaches are getting hit up [for new jobs].
"So I sat him down and said, 'Dude, what is your plan? Man to man, brother to brother, you know there's real love here. What are you gonna do? Because if you're leaving, I need to think about what I need to do. But if you're staying, I'm with you. And then he said the exact same thing, and that was that."
At Arizona, which looks like a dark-horse contender for the Big 12 ******* le, most everything revolves around Fifita and his unconventional decision to not merely spend all five years at the same school but at a program with a somewhat tortured football history and a relatively low national profile.

Human remains have been found in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard in Arizona, approximately 15 miles from the home of Nancy Guthrie, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities said there is no indication "at this time" that the remains, which appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time, are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation.
The sheriff's department declined to comment on CNN's questions about who found the remains and when they were located, as well as why officials indicated there was no immediate connection to Nancy Guthrie.
On a hillside covered in saguaro cacti overlooking a busy four-lane highway in southwest Tucson, Pima County Sheriff's Department deputies were seen at the reported location of the remains.
The residential area, just on the outskirts of the city limit, is one turn off Ajo Way, leading to a handful of homes with long driveways.

Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie in a new interview, and he was pressed on whether federal officials should take the lead in the ongoing investigation.
"Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker asked Blanche, who was recently confirmed as President Donald Trump's choice to lead the Justice Department, if it's time for federal officials to play a larger role, as state law enforcement has led the investigation so far.
Aug. 1 marked six months since Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC's "Today" show morning anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Authorities have provided few public updates about the status of the case.
"It's a horrible situation, and I share the grief and frustration that you and your colleagues have and that the whole country has in the situation," Blanche said. "Meet the Press" is also an NBC program.
But Blanche suggested the FBI won't take control of the search for the 84-year-old woman.

TUCSON — Max Meylor got his payback. And it came at the expense of his former team.
Leading the Rattlers with big-play throws and great escapes, Meylor carried the Rattlers to a 62-51 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard on Sunday, Aug. 16, before a crowd of 4,900 at Tucson Arena for the Indoor Football League national championship.
It was the Rattlers' third IFL ***** le since entering the league in 2017 and their eighth as a franchise. The first five came in the Arena Football League. The Rattlers' past six ***** les have come under coach Kevin Guy.
Last year, when Meylor was the league's MVP for Green Bay, he came up 1 yard short of a championship, stuffed just short of the goal line as time expired in a 64-61 loss to the Vegas Knight Hawks at the same arena.
This time, the Blizzard stopped Meylor only once — in the first series of the game.

Marana High School star senior receiver Sean Roebuck Jr. is recovering from severe injuries suffered in a car accident this past weekend that could keep him out of the 2026 high school football season, according to a report by AllSportsTucson.com.
Toby Bourguet, who runs Tucson Turf, a top youth 7-on-7 football program in the nation and is close to the family, provided an update on Roebuck's medical condition on Facebook, sharing what the Roebuck family gave him on Monday, Aug. 10.
"He is being taken care of by an amazing team of doctors and nurses, and we are so grateful for them," Bourguet wrote. "The spine doctor came in and said he is not concerned about the C7 fracture and no surgery is needed. His broken collarbone will just need a splint. His lungs look great. He does have 2 broken ribs and lots of scrapes on his right side.
"He will need plastic surgery to repair the fractured right eye socket, and he also has a broken jaw. He has a small laceration on his liver that they are watching. He will remain sedated and intubated for a little while longer. We don't have a concrete timeline yet for when they will wake him up and remove the breathing tube."
Bourguet added that the Roebucks are thankful for every prayer, text and call and love shown to the family. He also stated on his social-media post to pray for Sean and for the doctors as they make decisions about the next steps.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Former Clemson forward RJ Godfrey has committed to Arizona, potentially filling the biggest hole in coach Tommy Lloyd's roster.
Godfrey announced his decision on Instagram Sunday, positing "Committed" with a photo of him in an Arizona jersey.
Godfrey averaged 12.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in his return to Clemson last season after a year at Georgia. He played his first two seasons at Clemson in backup roles.
Arizona went to the Final Four for the first time in 30 years last season and lost several key players from that team, including bruising power forward Tobe Awaka. The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Godfrey will likely fill his spot and create another formidable frontcourt in the desert alongside 7-footer Moteijus Krivas and scrappy forward Ivan Kharchenkov.

The Washington Huskies saw a pair of key depth pieces along the offensive line depart through the transfer portal, including center Zachary Henning, who is expected to play a key role with coach Jedd Fisch's former program, the Arizona Wildcats.
Henning, who played in all 13 games for the Huskies in 2025 and started four in the middle last season, is now expected to take over the full-time starting role with the Big 12 program this fall.
After earning a 66.7 in pass blocking grade and a 65.7 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus last fall, Henning would have been an important piece of depth for position coach Michael Switzer's unit behind senior Landen Hatchett. However, he chose the transfer portal for the exact opportunity that he found in Tucson.
"When you watched Zach's tape, he jumped off the tape at you," Arizona offensive line coach Josh Oglesby said during spring practice.
"Being in an offense that was multiple is beneficial, and understanding he has been exposed to multiple things. His athleticism that you saw on tape was something that was really enticing. He wasn't an easy get. There were a lot of people that wanted his services, but preaching to him the opportunity to be developed and giving him Ka'ena Decambra's story of where he started and where he finished. It was something that was interesting to Zach, and he has jumped in the room and fit in perfectly."

Savannah Guthrie's missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, may have died shortly after she was allegedly taken from her home.
In a ransom note sent to the Today coanchor and her family, the writer claims, "We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken."
"We believe it was heart related," the writer said regarding the alleged death of Nancy, who was 84 years old when she went missing. "She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome."
"We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace," the note read. "We are truly sorry."
The note, sent to Tucson CBS affiliate KOLD-TV on February 6, was part of new information released on Friday, July 31, by the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

A hair sample that underwent forensic testing after being found at the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, came back inconclusive and did not point to a suspect, the sheriff overseeing the local investigation told CBS News on Thursday.
"It came back with no results," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. The sheriff's department said the results from the hair sample were verified in early June. Thursday was the first time they shared that information publicly.
Nanos noted there was blood and other DNA found at the scene that is also still being ******* yzed, but has so far also yielded no results.
"I know that there was blood at the scene and so that was also part of the processing of the scene," Nanos said.
CBS News previously reported in May that a DNA sample that was sent by sheriff's detectives to a private laboratory in Florida was then forwarded to the FBI's crime lab in Quantico, Virginia. Officials did not confirm, however, any details about that sample or whether it was the hair sample in question.

Alex is a tremendous talent in the race car and an even better person outside of it. We're proud he'll have the opportunity to finish his full-time career with us on his terms. He's family."
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Bowman has eight victories across 371 Cup Series races and holds the record for most consecutive starts on the front row of the Daytona 500 with six. He won the pole at the Super Bowl of stockcar racing three times in his career.

The White House has staunchly defended its management of visa restrictions imposed on Iran's national football team during the recent World Cup, ******* erting that the squad's decision to base themselves in Tijuana, Mexico, rather than Tucson, Arizona, proved mutually beneficial for all involved.
Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House Task Force for the World Cup, maintained that the complex cross-border logistics operated smoothly, despite vocal complaints from Iran both during the group stage and following their elimination from the prestigious tournament.
The Iranian Football Federation had, at the eleventh hour, negotiated a move for the team's primary base camp from Arizona to Mexico. This significant relocation was largely prompted by lingering uncertainty over whether the team's players and support staff would ultimately be granted the necessary visas to enter the United States.
"It's important to point out that the Iranians chose to go to Tijuana. We were happy with that choice," Giuliani informed reporters on Wednesday. He further elaborated, "I think the Mexicans were very happy with that choice. I think the Iranians, as they said, were very happy with that choice as well."
Giuliani underscored the core objective of the White House Task Force: "I think what we tried to do here on the White House Task Force was apply common sense to making sure the athletes could have fair play on the pitch."

It’s been a pretty strong summer for Arizona on the recruiting trail, and it got a little better on Saturday.
3-star Texas offensive lineman Mason Joshua announced his commitment to the Wildcats, becoming the 17th member of their 2027 recruiting class.
Joshua has a nice frame, 6-foot-5 and around 270 pounds. He has plenty of room for growth and to add good weight once arriving to Tucson. He completed his first season as a starter last year for his Forney squad and played both right tackle and, at times, center. He is a multi-sport athlete and has found wild success with his track and field adventures, earning plenty of accolades.
Joshua had 21 reported offers on the recruiting side. He chose the Wildcats over Arizona State, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh, Texas Tech, Utah and Wake Forest to name a few.
Ranking-wise, 247Sports has him listed as a 3-star in both the Composite and their internal rankings. In the Composite, Joshua checks in as the No. 520 player nationally, the No. 33 OT and the 68th-best player in Texas. Internally, 247 has him ranked as the No. 25 interior offensive lineman and the No. 48 player in the Lone Star State.

Iran wasn't going to leave without saying thank you.
Shortly after being knocked out of the World Cup because of Algeria and Austria's 3-3 tie in the last group-stage game to go final, Iran paid tribute to its hosts in Mexico with a post on the team's official Instagram page.
The story featured clasped hands, one wearing a Mexico sweatband and the other an Iran sweatband, in a soccer stadium with fireworks exploding in the background.
"Thank you for opening your doors to us," Team Melli wrote in Spanish. "Your act will stay in your hearts."
Iran was forced to move its base camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico, at the eleventh hour due to restrictions imposed on the team by the U.S. government. Players and coach Amir Ghalenoei have repeatedly expressed their gratitude for the support they've gotten from Mexico.

The United States has eased its travel restrictions on Iran's World Cup team, allowing the squad to enter the country two days before its next match, the Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday.
Despite the relaxed rules, the team will still be required to depart after Friday's game in Seattle, a department spokesperson confirmed. A representative for the Iran Football Federation verified that the team is scheduled to leave its base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, on Wednesday for Seattle.
Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, explained the decision to The ***** ociated Press, stating, "This was planned on our end. We were going to look at how the first two movements went, and if they went smoothly, we would extend the extra day in light of the longer travel time."
The Iranian squad has previously voiced complaints regarding the travel limitations imposed on them and the difficulties faced since the outbreak of war. For their initial two matches in Los Angeles, the team was only permitted to travel the day before. Their base camp was also relocated from Tucson, Arizona, to Mexico, and several team officials and support staff were barred from entering the U.S. with the team.
While it is standard practice for teams to travel a day before a match, aligning with FIFA regulations, Iran had specifically requested additional time to acclimate to host cities and recover post-matches.

INGLEWOOD, California — Mexico's hospitality for Iran's World Cup team has not gone unnoticed. Or unappreciated.
Midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh made a point of thanking the people of Mexico, which welcomed Iran after they were forced to relocate their training camp from Tucson, Arizona. Iran is based in Tijuana, Mexico, and flies to the United States for its games.
"We love Mexican people. I think everyone has the same feeling," Jahanbakhsh said after Iran held Belgium to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, June 21, keeping its hopes of making the knockout rounds alive. "It's just unbelievable how welcome we are there and the hospitality there is amazing, and I think there is a really heartful feeling between the players and the team to Mexican people now.
"I would like to say, `muchas gracias,'" Jahanbakhsh said, smiling.

Auburn baseball has reeled in its second pitcher from the transfer portal.
Former Arizona right-handed pitcher Corey Kling shared on Wednesday on his Instagram account that he has committed to Auburn after spending one season in Tucson.
Kling was a quality reliever for the Arizona Wildcats last season. He tossed 40 innings over 20 games, striking out 43 batters and walking just nine. He tossed a season-high 3 2/3 innings of relief work twice over his final three games, striking out a season-best five batters in his outing against Houston on May 8.
The 2026 season was the only season Kling spent in Arizona. The Delray Beach, Florida, native spent his first two seasons at USF, where he made 21 appearances and struck out 25 batters while walking 12 over 38 2/3 innings.
Kling joins former South Alabama pitcher Zach Stevens by transferring to Auburn this offseason. The duo will be part of a depth-building offseason as four pieces of the pitching staff have entered the transfer portal.

Coach Amir Ghalenoei said Iran is the "most oppressed team in the World Cup" after his players were suddenly informed they must travel back to Mexico immediately after their opening game ended in Los Angeles late Monday.
It is the latest logistical nightmare for an Iran squad that arrived at the tournament being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada under the shadow of a bitter diplomatic row between Tehran and Washington.
The US -- which was in military conflict with Iran for months, until a peace deal was announced on Sunday -- refused to issue visas for some team support staff, and provided travel documents to players only at the last minute.
The team was originally intending to base its training camp in Tucson, Arizona but moved it at the 11th hour to Tijuana in Mexico due to the visa and logistical issues.
"They delayed our arrivals, (now) they are forcing us to go back early without time for recovery," Ghalenoei told journalists following a 2-2 draw with New Zealand.

After months of uncertainty surrounding their participation in the tournament following war in the Middle East, Iran were due to kick off their Group G game against New Zealand in Los Angeles at 6:00 pm local time (0100 GMT Tuesday).
Iran were initially to be based in Tucson, Arizona, but switched their training base to Tijuana in Mexico at the 11th hour as a result of ongoing tensions with World Cup co-hosts the United States over visa issues.
US authorities have refused to grant visas for several members of the Iranian delegation.
A few hours before Monday's opener at the SoFi Stadium, hundreds of protesters against Iran's ruling regime gathered outside the venue to vent their anger at Tehran's rulers.
