LOS ANGELES (AP) — Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died in May from the effects of heroin and cocaine, authorities said Friday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said the 29-year-old basketball player's death was accidental.
Clarke was found dead inside a home near Los Angeles on May 11. A person familiar with the terms of the investigation told The **** ociated Press after the Grizzlies announced Clarke's passing that drug paraphernalia was found at the residence. The person had spoken on condition of anonymity because those details had not been released publicly.
Clarke was under contract to be with the Grizzlies through the 2026-27 season.
About six weeks before he died, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on charges of speeding, reckless driving and possessing a controlled substance. He was with Memphis for all seven of his pro seasons after finishing his college career at Gonzaga.

A hair sample that underwent forensic testing after being found at the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, came back inconclusive and did not point to a suspect, the sheriff overseeing the local investigation told CBS News on Thursday.
"It came back with no results," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. The sheriff's department said the results from the hair sample were verified in early June. Thursday was the first time they shared that information publicly.
Nanos noted there was blood and other DNA found at the scene that is also still being ******* yzed, but has so far also yielded no results.
"I know that there was blood at the scene and so that was also part of the processing of the scene," Nanos said.
CBS News previously reported in May that a DNA sample that was sent by sheriff's detectives to a private laboratory in Florida was then forwarded to the FBI's crime lab in Quantico, Virginia. Officials did not confirm, however, any details about that sample or whether it was the hair sample in question.

July 1 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh said on Wednesday that while he has not changed his mind that a large central bank balance sheet should be shrunk, any notable change in policy on this matter will take time and be well communicated.
"Decisions will be well deliberated publicly, well understood, and will not be implemented until financial markets have come to understand what those are," Warsh said at a European Central Bank event in Sintra, Portugal.
"It took us about 18 years to find our way into this big balance sheet, which again, in my biased view, borders on fiscal policy" and it will take some time to figure out where things go next. "I'm open-minded on the question -- we're not going to prejudge it, but I want interest rate policy" to be the main tool used by the central bank, the official said.
"My four weeks at the Fed haven't disabused me of that idea" that Fed holdings should be smaller, Warsh said.
Warsh returned to the Fed in May after an extended period of criticizing the central bank for the expansive size of its balance sheet, which is now at $6.7 trillion. That's down from the $9 trillion peak hit in 2022 but it remains much larger than the $4.2 trillion seen just ahead of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the sub trillion dollar size seen before the onset of the financial crisis two decades ago.

At least 188 people have been killed and 1,520 injured in Venezuela after powerful back-to-back earthquakes rocked the country, according to a Thursday afternoon update provided by National ******* embly President Jorge Rodríguez.
More than 200 people remain trapped under collapsed or damaged buildings after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit about 100 miles west of the capital, Caracas, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS said the death toll would most likely run into the thousands, with a substantial probability of it exceeding 10,000. The state of La Guaira, which is believed to be the area hardest hit and which Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez described as a "disaster zone."
