NEW YORK (AP) — Ancient mummy DNA recovered in Chile has yielded the firmest evidence yet that European colonization brought smallpox to the Americas.
Smallpox was one of the deadliest diseases in human history before it was eradicated in 1980, largely thanks to vaccination. For centuries, the virus had killed about one-third of the people it infected and left most survivors with deep and sometimes disfiguring scars.
Outbreaks struck Asia and Europe and eventually spread to the Americas, where colonial writings, administrative records and missionary reports documented how it killed millions and devastated Indigenous populations who had never been exposed to the virus.
Now there's scientific evidence for the spread: An ******* ysis of Chilean mummies provides the strongest genetic link yet to the virus as it existed outside of the Americas, and provides a better picture of how it reached remote populations through colonization, said geneticist Shigeki Nakagome with Trinity College Dublin.
In the new study, Nakagome and colleagues examined 13 bone samples previously collected from an archaeological site at Camarones, in northern Chile.

A hair sample that underwent forensic testing after being found at the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, came back inconclusive and did not point to a suspect, the sheriff overseeing the local investigation told CBS News on Thursday.
"It came back with no results," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. The sheriff's department said the results from the hair sample were verified in early June. Thursday was the first time they shared that information publicly.
Nanos noted there was blood and other DNA found at the scene that is also still being ******* yzed, but has so far also yielded no results.
"I know that there was blood at the scene and so that was also part of the processing of the scene," Nanos said.
CBS News previously reported in May that a DNA sample that was sent by sheriff's detectives to a private laboratory in Florida was then forwarded to the FBI's crime lab in Quantico, Virginia. Officials did not confirm, however, any details about that sample or whether it was the hair sample in question.

Even great teams have room for improvement, and for the Dodgers in 2026, one of those paths is in the acquisition of a catcher. Will Smith has been out since early June with neck inflammation, and updates on his condition have put into question if and when the veteran might be back. We asked the fans if the Dodgers should proceed with the current depth chart believing in Smith's return or plan for the worst while they still can.
All in all, with the resources that this team possesses and the lack of holes to fill, to look for a catching addition feels like a given. Perhaps more than what we may see with the bat, the Dodgers ought to look at adding a steady presence, a catcher who can be relied on to not only do his job but also excel behind the plate defensively.
What adds layers to this debate is that for a team on the market for a catcher, there are legit game-changing options to at least call about. Although none of them are explicitly on the block, controllable beyond just this current campaign, Hunter Goodman, Shea Langeliers, and Adley Rutschman each could be seen within reason as trade candidates. Acquiring any of them, though, would inevitably back the Dodgers into a corner down the line since Smith is going nowhere long-term.
Perhaps in Minnesota, the Dodgers might find targets that are more their speed in Ryan Jeffers or Victor Caratini. Quietly, one of the better-hitting catchers in the AL over the last four seasons, Jeffers has been phenomenal with a .933 OPS in a short sample (44 games) due to missed time this year. With Caratini, who is under contract through next season at a reasonable rate, the Dodgers would be getting stability above all else, adding a player perfectly willing to fade into a backup role down the line. Caratini might even provide Rushing insurance if the youngster hits his way into staying on as a starter in the playoffs.

At the outset I have to admit that I am going to break one of my rules. I am including Jake Meyers and Taylor Trammel even though they do not qualify under the 120 out rule. I am doing it for two reasons. First, Meyers comes very close with 114 outs, so sometimes that 120 designation can feel rather arbitrary. More importantly, it gives us a total picture of the center field position. When we include Brice Matthews we get a total picture of the Astros side of things and it gives us 16 center fielders to profile instead of 14. The bigger the sample size the better the data.
The number one thing we have noticed throughout this series is that each position stands on its own and center field is no different. The big league average for bases per out was .676 before the break, but every position has come in above or below that mark. So, before we make any declarative statements about the Astros and center field we need to take the position norm into account.
However, the distribution of outs demonstrates opportunity. Generally speaking, you want the best players getting the most opportunities. When that doesn’t happen, that is an example of inefficiency. Naturally, if this were a commentary piece then we could attribute blame on one person or another. Since it isn’t, we can chalk it up to an organizational failure and simply highlight that. In a close division and wild card race, organizational failures like that are magnified.
This is a reminder that bases per out are calculated by adding total bases, walks, stolen bases, and hit by pitches and dividing that sum by total outs. All of the components are available on baseball-reference.com, but it is not a recognized stat yet. I suppose we can say we are on the ground floor of a movement, but I did not invent the stat. It just hasn’t caught on yet.

It's pretty well documented that the San Francisco 49ers' recent first-round draft history isn't good. But a recent ranking by CBS Sports showcased just how awful the picks under John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have been since 2000.
Mike Renner ranked all 191 first-round picks over the past six years, factoring in draft capital and the players available rather than pure talent evaluation. San Francisco's five picks over that span landed at No. 43 (Brandon Aiyuk, 2020), No. 95 (Ricky Pearsall, 2024), No. 133 (Javon Kinlaw, 2020), No. 135 (Mykel Williams, 2025) and dead last at No. 191 (Trey Lance, 2021). That works out to one top-third pick, one middle-third pick and three in the bottom third — including the single worst decision of the entire six-year sample.
Renner didn't hold back on the Lance pick, which cost the 49ers a 2021 first-rounder, 2022 first- and third-round picks and a 2023 first-rounder to move up for:

The MLB trade deadline is now under two weeks away. While everybody is focused on the big names who could be moved, like Tarik Skubal or Mason Miller, it can often be most beneficial to think about the players who remain and still wind up benefiting from the trade. In this article, I'm going to look at players who could see their fantasy value improve actionably at the deadline, whether they are the ones traded away or the ones who find themselves filling a vacated role.
For this article, I'm only going to focus on trades that seem likely. So I know that Shea Langeliers and Hunter Goodman are being floated in trade rumors, but I don't think either one of them is going to be moved, so we're not going to discuss which catchers could step into starting roles in two offensive-friendly environments. I will admit that left us with a list that doesn't include a lot of "league winners," but that's also the nature of the expanded playoff format. There are a lot of teams that still find themselves in contention, so we may not see as many impact hitters be traded away, which means there might be fewer openings in lineups.
With that preamble out of the way, let's get to the names.
Cole Carrigg - OF, Rockies: Carrigg has hit well in his rookie season, slashing .287/.367/.519 in 34 games with four home runs, 27 runs scored, and 23 RBI. He has slightly below-average barrel rates and hard-hit rates, so he's not tearing the cover off of the ball, but he has good bat speed and is making better-than-league-average zone contact, which is a nice profile in Coors Field. Yet, despite being a switch hitter, Carrigg seems to be splitting playing time with Tyler Freeman. A trade of one or both of Jake McCarthy and Mickey Moniak would open up an everyday role for Carrigg, who wouldn't be a MUST ADD, but would be a nice depth outfield piece in a great home park.
Victor Bericoto - OF, Giants: Bericoto is currently on the injured list with a strained oblique, but by the time the trade deadline rolls around, he will have already missed a month, which means he could be returning shortly thereafter. The rookie has slashed .293/.305/.552 in 59 plate appearances with four home runs, nine RBI, and one steal. He has a 46.5% hard-hit rate and also posted a 50.4% hard-hit rate in Triple-A while posting elite bat speed numbers, so the power production could be very real. He does have some swing and miss in his game because he is an aggressive hitter, but he also has league-average zone contact rates in the minors and a 91.5% rate in his limited MLB sample, so he might make enough contact to make the power work. The Giants are currently shopping Jung Hoo Lee, which could open up a regular outfield spot for Bericoto when he's back from injury.

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday that federal officials have brought the multistate cyclospora outbreak "under control," saying investigators have identified the source of the illnesses and implemented recalls, even as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues investigating the precise source of the contamination.

With it being a day ending in Y, the Mets have made another roster move. The team has called up right-handed pitcher Daniel Duarte from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned fellow right-handed pitcher Xzavion Curry to Syracuse. Both pitchers have been part of the team's roster churn at the fringe of its major league bullpen this year.
Duarte has thrown five innings for the Mets at the major league level, and he has a 0.00 ERA and a 2.50 FIP in that extraordinarily small sample. He'll presumably get sent back to Syracuse before long, and in 30.1 innings at that level this year, he has a 4.75 ERA and a 4.96 FIP.

(NEXSTAR) – Yet another state has been linked to the multistate outbreak of the parasite-linked sickness cyclosporiasis as investigators seek to positively identify the cause.
While the Food and Drug Administration has confirmed that a positive test result linked to samples of Taylor Farms-branded shredded lettuce sourced from central Mexico was instead a false positive, the investigation remains focused on the produce.
"FDA's traceback investigation and outbreak data continue to converge on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms locations in central Mexico," the FDA said Monday. The agency added that it "will continue to work with federal and state partners to investigate this multistate outbreak and ensure products implicated in this outbreak have been removed from the market."
Product samples are still being collected, but "there are no confirmed positive sample results" linked to the cyclospora outbreak, the FDA said.

For the third straight season, the Florida State Seminoles will have a new starting quarterback, with all three coming from the transfer portal.
Ashton Daniels battled Kevin Sperry for the starting job during spring practice and was named the starter shortly after they wrapped up the 15 practices. Head coach Mike Norvell was asked about what he saw in Daniels that made FSU target him when he entered the transfer portal.
"Ashton Daniels is a guy that can really do it all," Norvell explained. "Ashton's got a great deal of experience throughout his college career, he's been put in a lot of different situations that he's had to work through. You see somebody that's just continued to grow."
Daniels started 23 games during his time with the Auburn Tigers and Stanford Cardinal and has played in 37. The veteran has improved each year, completing 60.2% of his passes for 4,783 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions. It was in a limited sample size, but he improved his interception rate from 3.3% at Stanford to 1.7% at Auburn.
Another thing that made him desirable for FSU was his ability to run and extend plays, while also being able to hurt teams with his arm. He has rushed for 1,397 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.

Some automakers and parts suppliers have expanded manufacturing in the United States under President Donald Trump, seeking to avoid costly tariffs and protect against geopolitical disruptions. Chip shortages sparked industry-wide turmoil during COVID-19, exposing the sector's heavy dependence on a small group of suppliers in Europe and Asia.
Bosch bought the chip plant in Roseville, California in 2023 from TSI Semiconductors and reconfigured it, at a total cost of $2 billion including the Commerce Department funds, and will begin commercial production later this year.
Paul Thomas, president and CEO of Bosch in North America, told Reuters that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade was part of the reason Bosch had increased its investment in the U.S. chip sector, as companies there seek more developed domestic supply chains.

The news that 39-year-old former NFL running back Chris Johnson has ALS has reignited the discussion about the risks of playing football, and recent research puts into focus just how significant the link between playing in the NFL and developing ALS at a young age appears to be.
The Concussion & CTE Foundation said today that it has identified 10 NFL players since 1960 who died of ALS before the age of 50. ALS is typically a disease ******* ociated with aging, and it is extraordinarily rare in the general population for people to die of the disease before age 50. The same study says that based on population models, there should have been fewer than one NFL player since 1960 who died of ALS before age 50: Mathematically, the expected number would be 0.24 ALS deaths before age 50 out of a sample the size of the 19,824 NFL players whose health records were studied.
The study did not name all 10 players who have died of ALS, but some former NFL players who have been publicly identified as dying of ALS before turning 50 include 49ers linebacker Eric Scoggins at age 49, Patriots and Eagles running back Kevin Turner at age 46, Vikings defensive back Orlando Thomas at age 42 and Oilers defensive tackle Glenn Montgomery at age 31.

On June 16, 2026, Nano Dimension Ltd. (NASDAQ:NNDM) and Infinite Epigenetics issued a shareholder update on the proposed business combination announced on June 15. Nano said it reviewed Murchinson's recent letter on the proposed transaction and noted that final transaction details were still being negotiated. The company said it would provide complete details and a description of the proposed transaction once finalized.
Nano said Infinite Epigenetics is "not a concept company" and "not an AI wrapper," pointing to operating businesses, a CLIA-certified methylation laboratory, existing commercial revenue, a network of more than 7,500 healthcare providers, issued intellectual property, and a proprietary database of more than 120,000 biological samples. The company also said Infinite's team has authored over 50 publications, and that a single sample processed in Infinite's CLIA-certified laboratory can read more than one million epigenetic signals. Nano said it selected Infinite from approximately 20 opportunities it evaluated and framed the transaction as a shift from 3D printing to AI-powered preventive health and diagnostics.
Nano said the term sheet with Infinite followed a months-long review process with support from financial and legal advisors, as well as consultants ****** sing Infinite's technology, target markets, and operations. The company said the proposed combination values Nano at net cash plus a 20% premium, preserves the value of Nano's Nasdaq listing, allows holders to retain contingent value rights on Nano's legacy ****** ets, and adds equity upside. Nano also said the contemplated transaction would not provide separate or transaction-driven compensation or payouts and that any definitive agreement would be subject to a shareholder vote.

The trial of a woman accused of killing her baby by exposing her to heat from a hairdryer has heard the infant's DNA was found on the appliance.
A forensic biologist told the High Court in Aberdeen that samples taken from the hairdryer nozzle matched the DNA of three-month old Dahlia-Rose Gartshore.
Courtney Gartshore, 28, denies culpable homicide while the baby was in her care on 30 September 2023 and a series of other charges.
The court also heard that fragments taken from a partially-stained bedsheet at her flat in Peterhead were identified as belonging to the baby.

This afternoon, the San Francisco Giants announced that they placed Victor Bericoto on the 10-day IL "with an oblique strain" and taking his spot on the roster is 25-year old Grant McCray, in the majors for the first time in 2026.
McCray had surgery back in June to repair his left hamate bone and up to that point he'd been hitting just .237/.360/.370. He made just three starts since being activated, but he's 4-for-8 with a homer, a double, a strikeout and a walk. He also stole 3 bases and didn't get caught. McCray's defense will come in handy. His bat remains the central question.
He'll be taking Victor Bericoto's roster spot. An oblique strain is a tough injury for a hitter and it's a real shame to see such a young player have some quite positive momentum halted by the injury bug. Such is baseball, I suppose. Then again, it's remarkable to consider how much these two players mirror each other. In 59 plate appearances, the 24-year old Bericoto had 15 strikeouts against just 1 walk but 4 homers and 3 doubles. In McCray's debut age-23 season, he swatted 5 homers in 130 plate appearances and had 56 strikeouts against just 6 walks. Not exactly the same, but close enough in terms of those three true outcomes. Although, it's absolutely worth mentioning that Bericoto's line in a much smaller sample is much, much better than what McCray did in 2024: .293/.305/.552 vs. .202/.238/.379.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the outfield defense aligns late in games because McCray is an outstanding defender in center and right and with Jung Hoo Lee and Drew Gilbert on the roster (at least for now), his playing time seems a little fuzzy.
The bigger surprise is the return of Keaton Winn, who comes off the IL after being seemingly lost to the vagaries of Tony Vitello's managing. But, nope. After hitting the IL on June 8th, he returned and rehabbed on July 3 and made 3 total appearances across the Giants minor leagues (who were playing home games in Northern California). He struck out 3 in three innings while walking 2 and allowing just a hit. He ******* ps Carson Whisenhunt back to the minors because, as Alex Pavlovic points out, "With the All-Star break, he wasn't going to be in line to start for at least a week."

Find one glowing review of the Minnesota Vikings' addition of quarterback Kyler Murray — and there are plenty — that doesn't mention Murray's salary as the foremost reason to love it. We'll wait.
Of course Murray's veteran's minimum salary is a great financial deal for the Vikings. He's making $1.3 million, the same as a backup linebacker who contributes on special teams or swing offensive tackle. A cheap salary alone doesn't mean Murray will bring the Vikings back to the playoffs.
Murray has played a lot of football. He has logged 87 career games. Terrell Davis had a Hall of Fame career and played just 78. And Murray has never truly broken out. His 92.2 career passer rating puts him in the middle of the pack of current NFL quarterbacks. The Cardinals made the playoffs one time with Murray and got blown out in their only postseason game.
This offseason, the woebegone Cardinals decided they'd rather have Jacoby Brissett as their quarterback and pay a dead cap hit of $54.7 million to simply be done with Murray. Basketball devotees understand how little Las Vegas NBA Summer League games predict young players’ futures. But even for the most measured consumer, it’s easy (and enjoyable!) to lose oneself to small-sample Summer League ***** ysis and evaluation, especially for highly touted rookies.
In that spirit, let’s discuss one thing I’m watching for each of the top five picks from the loaded 2026 draft class.
At BYU, possessions rarely began or ended without AJ Dybantsa touching the basketball. A mid-season injury to star teammate Richie Saunders only amplified their future top pick’s offensive responsibilities. Dybantsa already led the nation in scoring and approached the leaders in usage rate, but that figure spiked to a gargantuan 36.8 percent following the Saunders injury.
Dybantsa will handle the ball and create plenty in Las Vegas. He’ll share the floor with some other high-profile prospects (Tre Johnson, Will Riley) and must operate away from the ball, an area where he lacks experience and high-end skill.

As drafters, we expect our first couple of picks to be automatic, players who will sit atop any roster at the end of the season. Their contribution should certainly be impactful, one that can be counted on every time they take the field. Of course, it wouldn't be fantasy football without an early-round player getting injured during the preseason or the first couple of weeks of the regular season, sending them to the sidelines for a significant amount of games, or even ending their entire season before it even began.
Sadly, those premature injuries are an inevitable part of the game, something fantasy football managers really can't do anything about. But what about the guys who are drafted within the first few rounds who just don't pan out as expected? That significant drop in points can easily be a difference-maker throughout the season, considering those players' projections were among the top in the league. If we could somehow predict which players forecasted among the first two rounds would falter or produce much less than their expectations, we could get an edge on the competition and save ourselves some heartache along the way.

I also looked characteristics of an early-round bust at WR.
To get candidates with true fantasy failures, all players must have been on the field for at least 10 games that season, eliminating players with significant injuries. To qualify as a bust, players must have ended the season at least 10 spots below their positional average draft position (ADP) and/or posted at least 100 points below their projected output.
Sadly, those premature injuries are an inevitable part of the game, something fantasy football managers really can't do anything about. But what about the guys who are drafted within the first few rounds who just don't pan out as expected?
