U.S. Soccer has announced that Don Garber will serve as the chair of the federation's Soccer Forward initiative.
Garber has served as MLS commissioner since 1999, but will be replaced by Larry Berg starting on Jan. 1, 2027.
Though Garber will stay involved with MLS, transitioning into a role as chairman, he will now take on a new position with U.S. Soccer's program that aims to grow the game at the grassroots level.
As part of his new role, U.S. Soccer said that Garber will "bring new partners to the table, grow support for U.S. Soccer's long-term priorities, and offer soccer to more people in more places than ever before."
"I've spent more than four decades working in professional sports, and I've always believed that our greatest progress comes through strong partnerships and a shared vision," said Garber.

The Wisconsin Badgers are in primetime to start the season, as they're taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Lambeau Field on Sunday, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on NBC.
Wisconsin is coming off a 4-8 season, which was their worst season by win percentage since 1990. But this year's Badgers are quite different, as the program added over 30 transfers in the offseason, while making a few organizational changes with the coaching staff and front office.
Wisconsin's offense will be at the forefront of the conversation, as the Badgers are now led by Old Dominion transfer quarterback Colton Joseph, who threw for 2,624 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns last year as the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. He also added over 1,000 yards and double-digit scores on the ground as a dual-threat quarterback.

However, some of the legacy software and consulting companies have joined the league, thanks to the drawdown in their stocks amid "AI-pocalypse" fears. With artificial intelligence (AI) looking to automate coding and back-office tasks, the "man-hours" model that IT services firms rely on could be at risk. Accenture (ACN) is among the names that have been in the penalty box amid fears that AI would cause large-scale business disruption for the sector. However, such fears have eased, and legacy tech companies, which were considered net AI losers, have jumped sharply from their lows. Looking at some specific stocks, Adobe (ADBE) and Salesforce (CRM) have respectively risen 54% and 76% from their 2026 lows, while Accenture has soared 60%.

Kyle Larson has called out NASCAR's lack of wet-weather pit stops. The reigning champion went on the 'Door ***** per Clear' podcast and explained why teams should have more control over transitioning from wet-weather tires to slicks.
The recently concluded New Hampshire race saw drivers start on wet-weather tires before a competition caution on lap 40 allowed a change to slicks. As a result, drivers didn't have to race over the pit road, and teams took their time as well.
Larson believes the practice hurts the racing product.
"I think we've been doing this rain thing long enough now, it's gone well. There's other series that do live pit stops in the rain. Every other series does live pit stops in the rain. Why can't we?" he said.
"And bring in that element of strategy. And I think that's where the good teams can rise or even the slower teams like an SVG would have really smashed the field, he would've had a lot of cars a lap down. I think if they would've opened the strategy up. So I think it's just time, like we have the experience of doing it. Just let us just open it up," Larson added.

DETROIT — Based on what the Washington Commanders were presenting, Detroit Lions quarterback Luke Altmyer and tight end Jackson Meeks both anticipated man coverage.
But the Commanders dropped into zone at the snap, muddying what Altmyer thought was going to be a simple read. The Lions were running a play with a mesh-rail concept, a man-beating strategy designed to potentially get running back Trayveon Williams open out of the backfield. Ideally, a linebacker would be manned up against Williams, and that defender would have to sift through traffic to reach the running back.
"It was going to be really, really good for man coverage," Altmyer explained. "They ended up dropping into a three-deep zone it looked like. You don't really draw it up for three-deep zone. ... Luckily my O-line gave me a good amount of time, (the Commanders) rushed four.
"I was able to escape a little bit, and Meeks kind of just found a big, open ****** e."
Altmyer, after realizing his pre-snap ****** sment was incorrect, escaped right and strung the play out long enough for Meeks to come open. A Nazareth, Pennsylvania native, Peyton Falzone was originally committed to Penn State's 2026 recruiting class, but he opted to flip his commitment to Auburn last summer. He remained in the Tigers' class until December 3, 2025, two days before Matt Campbell was officially announced as Penn State's football coach. For a moment in time, Falzone and Jackson Ford were the only two members of the Nittany Lions' 2026 class.
Falzone was recruited as a quarterback, but during fall camp, the coaching staff has him transitioning to tight end. He has added some muscle this offseason and has been working with the tight end coaches:

Pittsburgh — Max Clark and some of the other Detroit Tigers rookies went to dinner in Pittsburgh Sunday night. The topic quickly turned to the one thing they all have in common right now — the vagaries, nuances and challenges of transitioning and adjusting to big-league pitching.
"We were talking about how it's just insane how quickly the league transitions," Clark said. "It's not week by week. It's literally series by series."
It didn't take the league long to see that Clark, when he first came up, was susceptible to high-velocity fastballs and he was seeing a healthy dose of them. Going into Monday, 72.4% of the pitches he'd seen were heaters, four-seamers or sinkers.
He was hitting .227 on the four-seamers and .267 on the sinkers.
So imagine Cleveland right-hander Tanner Bibee's surprise last Tuesday when Clark laced a 93.6 mph heater for a single with an exit velocity of 103.6 mph. Later in the game he smoked another fastball to the track.

Iowa State junior Rachel Van Gorp has become the first player in program history to be named to the AVCA Preseason Player of the Year Watch List, the organization announced Friday. Now in its third year, the watch list features 30 players from across the country, with Van Gorp being one of only two liberos selected.
The recognition follows a record-breaking 2025 sophomore season where Van Gorp was named the inaugural AVCA National Libero of the Year. She was also a Second Team All-American, making her the first underclassman in Cyclone history to earn a spot on the first or second team. On the conference level, she was the unanimous choice for Big 12 Libero of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team selection.
Van Gorp's 2025 campaign included a career-high 33 digs during the first round of the NCAA Championship and a streak of 35 matches with double-figure digs. She finished the year with a .980 reception percentage on 543 attempts. This summer, she continued her success on the international stage, winning a gold medal with the U21 National Team at the Pan American Cup.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer has a chance to be the first Sooner quarterback since Josh Heupel in 2000 to win a national championship. This comes after Mateer elected to return to Norman rather than pursue an NFL career.
Mateer had a down year in his first year in Norman. He completed 62.2% of his passes for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while rushing for 431 yards and eight scores. This comes after leading college football in 2024 at Washington State with 44 total touchdowns.
But there is some optimism for Mateer as the Sooners revamped the playmakers around him. It's due to those new players that ESPN's Greg McElroy believes Mateer could be in for a bounce-back season.
"He had to do a lot of it on his own," McElroy said on 'Always College Football.' "The run game last year was not what you were looking for. I mean, Venables even described it as not good. So, they go out and hire a great running backs coach who helped develop Ashton Jeanty and Jeremiyah Love... They upgraded the receiver room with Parker Livinstone from Texas and Trell Harris from Virginia. Remember those two names. I think those two names will be really good."

Former Arizona Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is transitioning from the NFL to Georgia Tech football's coaching staff.
CBS Sports reported on Friday, July 31, that Hopkins will be the Yellow Jackets' wide receivers coach.
Hopkins, 34, last played for the Baltimore Ravens on a one-year deal in 2025 and was briefly part of the New England Patriots' coaching staff during the team's first week of training camp.
"It was a great experience for all of us," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said about Hopkins on July 30. "That's what we try to do when we have some of these unique situations where a player — or former player or whatever it might be — wants to come in and help and learn, and they love football, and I think it was good for everybody."
Hopkins, who's played 13 NFL seasons with five Pro Bowl selections, will reunite with Georgia Tech offensive coordinator George Godsey. Godsey was the OC of Hopkins' first NFL team, the Houston Texans, from 2015-16, and was the Ravens tight ends coach last year when Hopkins was on the roster.
