Sep. 14—GRAND FORKS — UND's coaching staff has gotten its first few looks at the 2026-27 hockey team.
Due to NCAA rule changes, coaches can be on the ice with the team earlier than in the past.
"We're working out some kinks and getting the rust off," UND second-year head coach Dane Jackson said. "The professionalism, preparedness, focus and mindset of our guys has been very good. They all seem to have a real passion to come to the rink and are excited to be working. We've been really happy with the work we've been getting done."
Players initially returned to Grand Forks in July. They skated on their own for about five weeks.
Now, the coaches are working to implement systems and to sharpen details.

Unavailable for the Alabama Crimson Tide's win at Kentucky, could the 2026 season debut of Noah Rogers and AK Dear come this upcoming Saturday against Florida State?
After missing Week 2, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer updated the status of both Monday afternoon during his Week 3 press conference, as well as a few other Crimson Tide players currently dealing with injuries.
Among those was also Michael Carroll, Alabama's starting right guard who missed the Kentucky game, his first of the season.
"Michael, we'll continue to work with him," DeBoer said. "I feel confident that we'll get there, and we'll just kind of see how the week goes, but I think he's heading in a good direction, and we hope to get him back."

Alabama football is getting more healthy by the day.

He carried the burden of two straight losses to rival Texas State, of slow starts and road woes and missed opportunities in close losses. No matter what drills or exercises the Roadrunners devised, he knew he couldn't replicate those moments. He dove into the mental aspect as much as he could, searching for answers that might pay off when the situation finally arrived.
With UTSA trailing in the final two minutes against Texas State in a pivotal early season showdown Saturday in San Marcos, McCown delivered. The Roadrunners orchestrated a drive that ended in a 25-yard touchdown run by Brandon High with 14 seconds remaining, providing the final blow in a 30-26 win over the Bobcats.
"Obviously that's something we've been working on, and it showed today," McCown said. "To go out my last year against a rival here, a road win on a two-minute drill, it's big time. It says a lot about our team."

Throughout the offseason, Chiefs players and coaches have spoken with a lot of excitement about running back Kenneth Walker and what he can bring to the offense.
That trend continued on Thursday with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who noted the versatility Walker has displayed in practice through training camp.
"You've got to use that guy," Mahomes said of Walker in his Thursday press conference. "I mean, he's a talented football player. He runs tough. He has speed. He can break a touchdown at any moment. He can catch the ball. He does kind of it all.
"And so, when you have those guys on your team, you find ways to get them the football. If that's either just handing the ball off to them or throwing it to them, you've got to and so we got him for a reason. He came in with the right mindset and mentality, and he's really attacked this offseason. And so, I think he's as excited as anybody to get out there in Arrowhead and have Chiefs Kingdom behind him, and so him as well as Emmett [Johnson] and Brashard [Smith], I mean, we've got a good running back room, and we'll utilize those guys within this offense."

NEW DELHI: Mohammed Shami may be in the latter phase of his career, but the veteran pacer believes young Indian cricketers are arriving with a level of maturity that means they need less coaching and more timely guidance.
Shami, who has not played for India since March 2025 and last featured in a Test during the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in 2023, spoke about mentoring youngsters after helping East Zone win the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone.
Among those who caught his attention was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage batter who was part of the East Zone squad.
"I thoroughly enjoyed it. The kid in our team (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi) is literally as old as my career. He has that youthful innocence, loves to joke around, and absorbs things quickly," Shami said.
The 36-year-old believes the exposure young players receive today, particularly through the IPL and other high-pressure competitions, has accelerated their development.
"But most of these youngsters are already quite mature. With the level of cricket they play today—featuring in the IPL and other high-pressure tournaments—maturity comes early, so you don't need to over-coach them," he said.
"But yes, when the game gets tight and challenging, that's when you step in with tactical inputs and remind them to keep fighting," he added.
Shami's own motivation, meanwhile, remains undiminished despite his prolonged absence from India colours.
"There are plenty of reasons to stay motivated if you look for them. At this level, if you aren't self-motivated, your approach is wrong. No matter what stage you're playing at, your eyes must always be set on the next level," he said.
Shami took two important wickets, dismissing Ravichandran Smaran and Sheikh Rasheed, as East Zone secured the Duleep Trophy ******* le on the basis of a first-innings lead. The triumph also coincided with his 100th first-class appearance.
"As far as satisfaction goes, achieving this in my 100th match—and that too in a winning Duleep Trophy final—is special. East Zone has won this after a very long time. You've seen how we performed.
"Every single boy put his heart and soul into this campaign to get us here. To achieve this in these conditions, in this heat, is outstanding. As for me, whether it's your first match or your 100th, it doesn't matter—the effort and the approach remain exactly the same," he said.
Shami also stressed that the level of cricket does not change his approach.
"When you wear that crest on your chest, the level of cricket doesn't matter. If you play for the badge, that hunger will naturally show. Your willingness to fight only grows when you play with that pride.
"My mindset is simple: whichever level I get an opportunity to play, I want to make it count and fulfil my responsibility toward the team," he said.

CHENNAI: Ishan Kishan has developed a habit of saving his best for the big occasion. Last year, he led Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy ***** le and produced a match-winning century in the final, a performance that helped him earn his way back into India's T20I setup. After playing a matchwinning hand against Pakistan in Colombo in the T20 World Cup earlier in the year, Kishan delivered again in the Duleep final on Monday, leading East Zone against South at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Kishan smashed 270 off 334 ***** (30x4, 7x6), taking East to a mammoth 708 all out, ***** ar Kushagra chipping in with 101 as well. The double century, his second in first-class cricket, came after a gap of 10 years and has further strengthened his case for a return to India's red-ball setup.
A triple century seemed on the cards after he crossed 250, but Kishan said that personal landmarks never occupied his mind. Interestingly, he himself was unaware that it had been 10 years since he scored a first-class double century. "Honestly, I wasn't even thinking about 50, forget 300. I was only thinking about 50-run partnerships," Kishan said.
The double century came off 273 ***** . He then accelerated dramatically, reaching 250 in only 27 more ***** . But the intent, he said, was never to chase numbers. "I didn't change anything in my game plan. I was just batting normally. Once I got set, my thought was not to throw my wicket away. I have enough confidence in my shots to know that if I play well, I will either clear the field or find the gap," he said.
For Kishan, the most satisfying aspect of the innings was the temperament he showed. With East having won the toss and opted to bat, the priority was to build a total that would put South under pressure. "I would rate this innings very highly because I kept the team's goal ahead of my own runs. There were moments when I could have played more attacking shots, but the priority was to spend time in the middle, make good decisions and build a big total," he said.
That approach was shaped by a mindset Kishan believes has changed considerably during his time away from the Indian team. Having spent to two years grinding it out in domestic cricket, he said the experience taught him to simplify his game. "When you're playing for India regularly, sometimes you get into a flow and your growth can stagnate. Going back to domestic cricket makes you start from zero. You realise there are so many players scoring runs and that you have to perform better to get back," he said.

Leeds United Women comfortably beat local West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town Women at the BD Community Stadium in Garforth, making it five wins on the bounce to begin the new season.
This FA WNL Cup Group T match was dominated by the Whites from start to finish, and the final 3-0 scoreline was more than deserved for Simon Wood's side, who have been in fine form in the first few weeks of the campaign.
Speaking after the match, Wood was quick to praise not just the quality of his side but also their mindset.
"We're pleased in the fact that I think the messaging we've been giving to the players since last week against Chorley was, "the Cup's got to be a healthy distraction," the manager began, discussing what he said to his side in the build up.

The UW-Eau Claire Blugolds believe.
They believe this is the team that can turn around the program's college football fortunes. And they believe they can play with anybody.
That mindset was evident as the Blugolds started fast before holding off a strong Alma College team 23-15 in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Carson Park.
It was arguably the biggest win in head coach Rob Erickson's four seasons at Eau Claire.
"It's hard to rank the wins in my time here, but I would say this one is right there," Erickson said. "Alma was a final four team four years ago. They were a playoff team for six straight years.

Sep. 4—COULEE CITY — Last season, the Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors (15-3) achieved their goals of reaching the state tournament and competing at the highest level. This season they look to build on that.
"We have a ton of talent this year," Head Coach Katie Walsh said. "(We're) coming in with the mindset that we have the toughest district in the state, and we have to show up and compete every day and practice at our highest levels if we want to get to our goals — and that's definitely the state tournament and placing."
The Warriors made a deep run to the semifinals of the 1B state volleyball tournament before falling to Garfield-Palouse 3-0.
The Warriors roster five seniors once again this season. Walsh highlighted Dani Isaak, Grace Okamoto and Josie Bayless as three standout players that will fulfill key roles for ACH this season.
Isaak was a captain for ACH last season, Walsh said. She anticipates the returning senior to grow more as a leader as she brings a calm presence to the court and helps instill Walsh's vision for the upcoming season. Between Las Vegas Raiders fans and fantasy football players, there's no shortage of Ashton Jeanty followers collectively holding their breath regarding the running back's return timeline. After going down during training camp on August 23, there were initial concerns about the severity of Jeanty's injury, but it was later diagnosed as an ankle sprain, with his return timeline largely considered TBD.
Considering Jeanty's injury occurred weeks before the start of the 2026 NFL season, and with fantasy football drafts just ramping up, it's created a few tough decisions for fantasy owners. Thankfully, it appears that Jeanty is quickly trending in the right direction, at least considering what we've heard from head coach Klint Kubiak and general manager John Spytek.

Shaq Thompson is back with the Buffalo Bills.
Not that he ever really went anywhere.
The Bills signed the veteran linebacker to their practice squad Monday after Thompson spent the entire offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
"I wanted to be a Bill. I wanted to play football. I wanted to be around these guys," Thompson said on Tuesday. "When you come to work everyday and everybody has the same mindset... They make work fun. They make the building fun. Atmosphere is fun.
"Just brothers. It's more than just football players coming together. It's a true family here."

The season finale of "Hard Knocks" provided a perfect conclusion to the season in that it was all but conclusory. Throughout the episode, the impending "cut-down day" of the NFL season is approaching. Typically, this can be a very finite moment for players – either you made the roster or you didn't. However, as the Seattle Seahawks like to put it, cut-down day is "not doom and gloom. It's stay strong and keep faith."

The Everybody Loves Raymond alum, 68, opened up about Friends of Abe, a private network of conservatives in the entertainment industry during the August 24 episode of Andrew Gold's Heretics podcast.
"There were a lot of people that felt like they couldn't say anything who were conservative. And we ended up having to make a secret group," Heaton explained.
The former star of The Middle said the organization became known as FOA, or Friends of Abe, a reference to Abraham Lincoln, and members had a discreet way of figuring out if someone else had a similar political mindset.
"So you could say to somebody, 'Are you a friend of Abe?' Or, 'Are you FOA?' And if they said, 'Yeah,' then you knew there was another conservative or independent or, you know, or someone who is not a Democrat," she continued.

Kevin Durant on LeBron James joining 76ers: He understands how to put a winning basketball team together. He's been in the league for 24 years. He should know how to understand how to do that. And then he knows how to put himself in position to be successful. And I feel like for him to take a minimum says a lot about his mindset and how he's going to come into the team.
