Christopher Vizzina has waited three years for an opportunity to become Clemson football's starting quarterback. As fall camp gets underway, the senior is closer than ever to getting his shot.
Dabo Swinney confirmed Thursday that Vizzina remains ahead of freshman Tait Reynolds in the race to replace Cade Klubnik, who was selected by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the NFL draft.
"Again, he's got the pole position, but he's still gotta finish the race," Swinney said.
"He's gotta go finish the race, but he's got a lead into the second half here, so we'll see what happens."
Vizzina hasn't played much during his Clemson career, but he has spent those years developing behind Klubnik rather than looking elsewhere for an easier path to playing time. Swinney believes that approach has helped Vizzina earn credibility inside the Tigers' locker room.

Four dog mascots represent the most popular type of live mascot in the SEC. The SEC has three teams (Auburn, Missouri and LSU) with Tiger mascots, but LSU is the only one with a live Tiger mascot.
Across the conference, most programs established traditions with mascots long ago, but some mascots are more recent. The most memorable mascot moments in SEC history have to be when Texas mascot Bevo attempted to gore Uga at the Sugar Bowl and when Uga lunged and tried to bite Auburn receiver Robert Baker in 1996.
Someone had to be last. Sooner Schooner is a tongue-twister and started in 1964. The Sooner Schooner became Oklahoma's official mascot in 1980. We like the tradition of the Sooner Schooner and like the horses, but respect is earned in the SEC and we haven't quite warmed up to it yet. Oklahoma's mascot memorably tumbled over in 2019.
Sir Big Spur made his debut in 1999 and attends more than just home football games, which is a nice bonus. We are currently on Sir Big Spur VII, who is Old English Black Breasted Red Fighting Gamecock. Sir Big Spur will appear at events around South Carolina for $500 to $1,000 for 90 minutes.

Auburn basketball is preparing for the 2026-27 season by taking an overseas trip to Greece, where it will face some of the toughest competition the European circuit has to offer.
On Saturday, the Tigers open their excursion by facing KK Mega Superbet at Ano Mera Indoor Hall on the island of Mykonos at 11 a.m. CT, and will get a rematch with the same club on Sunday at the same time.
The Tigers are nearly as healthy as possible entering this weekend's action, with key returners Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton, as well as notable transfers Thomas Dowd and Adam Olson, available to play.
According to Auburn Athletics, four players will be unavailable for this weekend's games. Vanderbilt transfer George Kimbel II and Creighton transfer Owen Freeman are injured, and international signees Mantas Rubštavičius and Narcisse Ngoy are being held out of this weekend's games in Greece as they await eligibility clearance from the NCAA.
This year's overseas excursion is the first for Auburn basketball under head coach Steven Pearl, and the first since the Tigers visited Israel ahead of the 2022 season. This weekend's games will not be live-streamed or broadcast, but fans will be able to view behind-the-scenes content via TheStreamU.

Former Auburn Tigers coach Bruce Pearl recently voiced his opinion on the chaos in the WNBA right now. The WNBA went into turmoil when Sophie Cunningham publicly opposed transgender athletes' participation in women's sports.
Many have supported Cunningham, but many have gone against her as well. Among the many people who commented on the whole ordeal, former Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter Freedom proposed to the WNBA.
Freedom declared himself a WNBA prospect in his X post on Friday. He said that he would be available for selection in the 2027 WNBA draft. Following his announcement, Pearl issued an appeal to protect the WNBA. However, his involvement did not sit right with the fans.
"Their sport isn't in danger from anybody except the likes of you," one fan said.
Pearl expressed concern about the WNBA's future and said he has always tried to protect the sport.

Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney singled out one position group he's particularly excited about as the Tigers' fall camp opened Thursday.
Swinney praised the Tigers' tight end room, which features returning players Olsen Patt-Henry and Christian Bentancur, as well as three-star freshman Tayveon Wilson among others.
"That's a room we love," Swinney said at his Thursday press conference.
One player who Swinney thinks is overlooked on the depth chart is former walk-on Charlie Johnson, a graduate senior from Columbia.
"There's a name none of y'all know," Swinney said. "I would throw Charlie Johnson in there. That's Ellis Johnson's son. But man, this was a kid who was a wideout that we were like, 'You know what? Kind of like Brandon Ford back in the day. That big-bodied receiver and we were like, 'Probably needs to move into the tight end (room) if he can toughen up a little bit. That kid (Johnson) is like 235 pounds, and he's got a chance.

The Auburn Tigers have made an impression on one of the nation's top offensive playmakers as the 2028 recruiting cycle heats up.
Auburn is one of several schools catching the eye of four-star tight end Kaleb Ballard, according to a report by Rivals' Chad Simmons, joining SEC rivals Ole Miss and Florida. The Wetumpka native has stormed up the recruiting rankings, and many schools are beginning to take notice.
In an interview with Simmons, Ballard says he hopes to visit several schools, including Auburn, during the 2026 season. Playing close to home is a key component in his recruiting, which is why most of his visits will be to schools located in the Southeast.
"Growing up, we traveled a lot, so around six hours away is really just a drive for my family," Ballard said in an interview with Rivals. "I am looking mainly at schools in that window."
Auburn is a perfect fit for Ballard based on his preference. Ballard, who plays football for Wetumpka High School, is located only 48 miles west of Auburn. Auburn has also recruited its home base well in recent years, as three of Alabama's top 10 recruits from the 2027 cycle are committed to Auburn, and three of the top 20 recruits from the state signed with Auburn during the 2026 cycle.

Gateshead have signed former Hull City midfielder Rocco Coyle on a two-year contract.
The 20-year-old, who was released by the Tigers this summer, has National League experience having been loaned out to Boston United - as well as National League North side Scarborough Athletic - last season.
"It's a good feeling to be a part of the team," Coyle, the younger brother of Hull City captain Lewie, told the club website.
"Last week there was talk of me coming in. As soon as I came in I knew I was wanting to sign here and buzzing to get it done.

When the Philadelphia Eagles acquired Tank Bigsby, no one questioned his ability. Few, however, expected him to become a focal point of some potential offensive air raid. Through three NFL seasons, the former Auburn Tigers standout has caught just 11 passes, building his reputation as a physical, downhill runner rather than a dual-threat back who can stress defenses as a target out of the backfield.
Early in training camp, however, the Eagles appear to be exploring a different side of his game. While Saquon Barkley remains the unquestioned centerpiece of Philadelphia's backfield, Bigsby has been featured as a receiver as much as, if not more than, a ball carrier during practice. That may not be an accident.
Training camp isn't just about preparing players for Week 1. It's also an opportunity for coaches to discover traits that may have gone untapped elsewhere. Bigsby's work in the passing game suggests the Eagles are doing exactly that.
If he can prove capable of contributing as a receiver, Bigsby becomes more than Barkley's primary backup. He becomes a more complete offensive option who can stay on the field in a wider variety of situations without tipping the play call. He tracks as one of the most important pieces of the Eagles' offensive machine this season.
That versatility would only strengthen an offense that already features one of the NFL's deepest collections of skill-position talent. It also aligns with Philadelphia's broader objective of managing Barkley's workload.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners reliever Gabe Speier was given a three-game suspension Thursday after hitting Detroit's Gleyber Torres with a pitch in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's game.
Speier is appealing the ban, according to the MLB Players **** ociation.
Additionally, Mariners manager Dan Wilson was also suspended one-game and will serve his suspension in the series finale Thursday against the Tigers. Managers cannot appeal a suspension. Manny Acta will serve as the manager for the Mariners.
Speier had relieved Bryan Woo in the eighth inning of Seattle's 4-2 win. After getting the first two outs, Speier threw two inside fastballs to Torres, with the latter pegging him on the upper left leg on a 96.3 mph pitch.
Torres and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh proceeded to have words with each other before the benches and bullpens cleared. There were no punches thrown, and Wilson was ejected in the aftermath after Speier was tossed from the game. It was the second time this season Wilson was removed from a game.

Four-star safety Giovanni Tuggle is one of the top overall prospects in the 2028 class, and a player that the Florida State football program holds in very high regard. So does the rest of the country, as the 6-foot, 175-pounder has nearly 30 offers on the table.
As he gets set to embark on his junior year, Tuggle has a locked-in nine-game visits during the season, according to Benjamin Wolk of Dawgs247. He will come to Tallahassee on Oct. 31 for a Halloween showdown when FSU battles the Clemson Tigers.
Tuggle will visit the Texas A&M Aggies when they play the Arizona State Sun Devils in September and the Texas Longhorns in November. The LSU Tigers against the Ole Miss Rebels (Sept. 19), Georgia Bulldogs at the Alabama Crimson Tide (Oct. 10), and Alabama at the Tennessee Volunteers (Oct. 17) are a few other big games he'll be at.
He is the nation's No. 56 recruit and the No. 4 safety per the 247Sports composite rankings. In the state of Georgia, he's listed as the No. 9 prospect.
Florida State first made an offer to Tuggle last August. He's taken two visits to see the Seminoles since then. Back on March 31, Tuggle visited after FSU's Legacy Weekend. On June 14, he returned when he received an invitation to compete at a camp.

According to NESN's Tom Caron, the Boston Red Sox have reportedly signed John Brebbia to a minor league deal.
Brebbia made his MLB debut in 2017 for the St. Louis Cardinals and has played for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies since then. He pitched in three games for the Rockies this season, but has spent most of the year in Triple-A.
He started the year with the Minnesota Twins Triple-A affiliate, the St. Paul Saints, after being released by the Rockies on March 23. He pitched in 15 games for the Saints and had a 6.20 ERA. The Rockies re-signed him to a minor league deal and sent him to Triple-A Albuquerque.
In 13 games for Albuquerque, he had a 1.62 ERA and 19 strikeouts. He was released on Aug. 4.

Casey Mize's West Coast tenure may quickly be going south.
The former Detroit Tigers starter was traded to the San Diego Padres on Monday, Aug. 4, in a last-minute deal that cemented the Tigers as deadline-day sellers. The Tigers received praise for the deal, and one start into Mize's time with the Padres, the deal may be looking even better than initially thought.
Mize pitched what he called "the worst start of my career," against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Aug. 6, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs over 3⅓ innings in a 10-4 road loss. His ERA rose from 2.70 to 3.40 after the start.
"Not the first impression I wanted to make for my teammates and for the fans," Mize told reporters after the game. "Pretty tough time to have the worst start of my career. I just put us in a really tough spot, didn't give us a chance to win. So, frustrated and embarrassed by that."
By game score, a metric that measures the quality of an individual start with higher scores indicating better performances, this was indeed Mize's worst start of his career (8). His previous worst start by game score (15) came when he allowed six runs over 1⅔ innings against the Kansas City Royals on May 21, 2024. He had averaged a game score of 58 in 2026 before Wednesday's start.

The Detroit Tigers have added another experienced arm to their pitching depth.
According to Emily Waldon, left-hander Austin Gomber has signed a one-year minor-league contract with Detroit and will report to Triple-A Toledo.
Gomber, 32, brings seven seasons of major-league experience after pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies. The former fourth-round pick has made 168 MLB appearances, including 124 starts, while posting a 35-47 record, 5.08 ERA and 539 strikeouts across 705⅔ innings.
Gomber has spent the 2026 season at Triple-A after previously pitching in the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers organizations.
Waldon reported that he has recorded a 6.01 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 28 walks over 82⅓ innings, making 17 starts among his 22 appearances this season.

A.J. Hinch is not blaming the Detroit Tigers' trade deadline direction on one bad break, one injury or one player.
He is putting himself on the list.
After Detroit traded Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize while remaining within reach of the American League postseason race, Hinch acknowledged that the Tigers created the circumstances that made selling the most defensible option.
"I think I can look back, and I will look back a lot, into how we got to this point," Hinch said. "It doesn't always all make sense. It's not as easy as saying, 'Oh, I wish we would have done this. I wish we would have done that in April.' You don't get to replay the games."
The Tigers dealt with injuries and stretches of poor performance throughout the season. Hinch did not use either as a shield.

Elite five-star cornerback DJ Pickett emerged onto the scene last season as a True Freshman All-American. He arrived at LSU with tremendous hype as the highest-rated cornerback in his recruiting class, and needless to say, he did not disappoint. Pickett quickly became a staple of the LSU defense and an instant fan favorite while wearing the No. 3 jersey.
However, during practice today, I noticed that Pickett was wearing No. 5, the same number he wore in high school and in all of his official visit photos while being recruited, instead of No. 3.
During the press conference following practice, head coach Lane Kiffin was asked about the number change. Kiffin explained that Pickett was promised he would be able to wear No. 5 as part of his recruitment and ultimately in order to sign with LSU. Kiffin went on to say that he had done a lot of research by speaking with Pickett's family and representatives, but for whatever reason, that promise was never fulfilled. He added that he was not going to judge a situation that occurred before he arrived at LSU. However, because Pickett was promised the number in order to come to the school, Kiffin felt it should be honored.
This is another example of Kiffin going the extra mile to ensure that even promises made to players before he became LSU's head coach are kept. He is making it clear that his staff intends to build trust by honoring commitments made to players whenever possible.
Seeing Pickett in purple and gold will never be a sight for sore eyes, but it will certainly be interesting to see the No. 5 jersey back in action inside Tiger Stadium. The last player to wear the number was Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. LSU has seemingly had an unwritten tradition of not reissuing the jersey numbers of its Heisman Trophy winners—Billy Cannon, Joe Burrow, and Jayden Daniels—until now.

Monday's MLB Trade Deadline featured over 30 unique trades. Even so, the name you heard discussed the most in the days that followed was a 21-year-old starting pitcher with only 30 professional starts to his name. Yet, Anthony Eyanson was one of the highest-ranked prospects traded at the deadline and the headliner in a shocking six-player trade that sent Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox.
It's been a quick and surprising path for Eyanson from starting pitcher at LSU to headline prospect in the biggest trade at the MLB deadline.
After transferring from UC-San Diego to LSU in 2025, Eyanson struggled to begin the collegiate season. However, he seemed to find his footing in the final two months of the season and eventually was a key contributor on a Tigers team that won the national championship. At the end of the season, he ranked third in NCAA Division I in both wins (12) and strikeouts (152 in 108 innings), and worked as a reliever to close out LSU's final game in the NCAA regionals and then earned a win in the final games in the super regional and College World Series. Yet, some questions remained about his MLB future given that he had only one season at a top college program.
The Red Sox selected him in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft, at 87th overall. Then immediately got to work on the key question that many had for Eyanson: his velocity.
"When I was first drafted, it was more so just continuing to live in the zone with all my pitches and really just focus on the velocity for me," revealed Eyanson at this year's Futures Game. "That was a big one...Just working to throw harder and throw everything harder in the zone more often."

Zyhir Hope did not pretend he had everything sorted out the moment he learned he had been traded to the Detroit Tigers.

"I didn't know what to feel in the moment," Hope said via the Detroit Free Press. "You know what I'm saying? But yeah, I'm just ready for some ball. I'm excited."
That combination of uncertainty and excitement makes sense. One day, Hope was part of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. The next, he was packing, flying across the country and joining Double-A Erie as one of the most important prospects in Detroit's system.

Most of the baseball world had its attention fixed on Tarik Skubal Tuesday night.
The former Detroit Tigers ace made his first start in Dodger blue against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs across six innings in a 5-1 Los Angeles loss.
Back in Seattle, one of Skubal's former teammates delivered the performance Tigers fans will remember.
Troy Melton was absolutely brilliant.
The young right-hander shut out the Mariners across seven innings, allowing only three hits while helping Detroit pull closer in an increasingly crowded American League playoff race.

A little rain may have changed some plans, but it couldn't stop the 2026 Taunton Junior City Open.
A wet, windy morning on Monday, Aug. 3 saw the opening round of the Silver City's annual youth golf tournament shortened, with Divisions 2 (ages 14-15) and Division 3 (ages 16-18) playing nine holes instead of the usual 18 while Division 1 (ages 11-13) was able to just get in six holes before the skies broke open. However, a much brighter and drier final round followed on Tuesday, Aug. 4 saw all 18 holes and then some played at the John F. Parker Municipal Golf Course, and with it, three new champions crowned.
In Division 3, Taunton High rising junior Colby Emond reigned supreme, improving on his third place Division 2 showing in 2025 to take the oldest division ****** le shooting a combined 111 (+6) over 27 holes. Luke Durfee finished runner up, shooting a 113 (+8) while Emond's Tiger teammate Logan Gallinger shot 115 (+10) to finish third.
"(It was) just two good days of golf," Emond said. "Wasn't the greatest conditions, but I got it done and that's all that matters."
In Division 2, Bristol-Plymouth rising sophomore Cal Soderberg and Taunton High rising sophomore Liam Ballantine found themselves tied at 114 (+9) after 27 holes, sending the duo to a sudden-death overtime. After both shot a 5 on the first two holes, Soderberg surpassed Ballantine with a par putt for 4 on the third hole to secure the ****** le. His fellow Craftsman rising sophomore, Camden Scimonelli, came in third after shooting a 118 (+13).

The Mariners couldn't cut it at the Salty Spittoon on Tuesday, losing to the Tigers 8-0 in the first game following the trade deadline. Emerson Hancock pitched fine but had some poor defense behind him. Seranthnoy Domínguez made his Mariners debut and got shelled. The lineup posted a big ol' zero. Maybe they should try Weenie Hut Juniors instead. The Mariners had the gall to implode on SpongeBob Night at the ballpark. This was the first game after the trade deadline, allowing the Mariners to unveil what they've been working on the last few weeks. It's the moment you've been waiting for, in other words. Taylor Ward and Domínguez joined the team. Jhonny Pereda made the trip up I-5 to replace Mitch Garver, who was let go along with Rob Refsnyder. Even Brendan Donovan returned from his latest trip to the injured list. This felt like a good opportunity for a reset. It was not.

SEATTLE (AP) — It's only fitting that the last Detroit Tigers starter to match Troy Melton's most recent feat is no longer on the team.
Melton's latest strong outing, which came in an 8-0 victory against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, made it back-to-back starts of seven innings with three or fewer hits allowed. The previous Tigers starter to do that before Melton was Tarik Skubal, who is now employed by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Melton doesn't have the resume as Skubal, the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. But since coming off the injured list in late May, Melton has been even better than his former teammate, and again looked like one of baseball's best pitchers Tuesday.
Even after Detroit dealt away Skubal and former No. 1 overall draft pick Casey Mize, Melton said he hasn't felt any added pressure to step up in the starting rotation.
"I'm just trying to get people out," Melton said. "Yeah, obviously (we) lost two pretty good players. So, got to find a way to replace them however we can."
