When you are reading this, we will be TWO WEEKS AWAY from the start of the Marquette women's soccer season!
We'll do a lot more season previewing as we get closer to the start of action, but for now, we have to beat the league office to the punch. Last year, we got the preseason Big East awards just a couple of days before the Golden Eagles got going with their season. That means we have to get waaaaaay out in front of the official results of the polling of the league's women's soccer coaches and make some picks for who is going to get honored as the season gets started. My guiding light on these picks is, as always, trying to predict how the coaches will vote. I have my own preferences as to how things should turn out, but at the end of the day, the goal is to try to get these right.
Okay, let's jump right into it, as we've got three individual awards to discuss, as well as a preseason all-conference team and a predicted order of finish for all 11 teams in the Big East!
These things don't have to be complicated: Kohls is the leading returning point scorer in the Big East this season. She had six goals and eight ***** ists last season for the Musketeers for a total of 20 points. Here's the catch: Since the last time the Big East updated the stats for last season was on November 10th, before the NCAA tournament started, Kohls was tied for eighth in total points a year ago and tied for ninth in points per game. She's still the best returning player. Part of that is because there were A LOT of seniors on the All-Big East teams last fall, and another part is because two players in front of Kohls transferred after the season was over. That includes her own teammate, Samantha Erbach, who was the top scorer in the Big East last year with 18 goals and 16 ***** ists, but now she's at Florida State.
I'm going by the points and points per game here, because I value the contribution of ***** ists to offensive production. Sometimes the coaches don't agree with me on that topic, and so I should note that the Big East's top returning goal scorer from last season is Marquette's Jocelyn Leigh, who finished the year with seven. That was tied for eighth in the league in total goals and alone in sixth for goals per game as of the last time the league ran the stat sheet. Marquette was third in the Big East in team goals for as of November 10th with only Georgetown and Xavier in front of them, so there's an argument for Leigh to get the nod here.

Guernsey boxer Tommy Teers saw his Commonwealth Games debut end in defeat.
The 28-year-old bantamweight - who juggles his boxing training with working as a carpenter - lost on a split decision to Eriu Temakau of Kiribati.
Teers had a point deducted for a low blow in the opening round before improving in the second.
But Temakau won the third round and took the decision 3-1.
"Surprisingly, I feel good - a split decision loss, I think the point deducted away from me in the first round kind of edged it his way, which is boxing, these things happen," Teers told BBC Guernsey.

New Kentucky Wildcats coach Will Stein brought in Kenny Minchey to be his starting quarterback for the 2026 season. It was a terrific addition to the roster, and an early big recruiting win for a talented player with multiple teams interested. He's just one of the new starting QBs in the SEC this fall, though.
More than half of the 16 teams in the SEC will have a new starter under center for this year, including some of the top teams in the conference. However, that doesn't mean there won't be plenty of talent at the position.
It figures to be an exciting season, and the Kentucky Wildcats are looking to move up in the standings this year. Minchey will have to be a big part of that, and will have to play like one of the SEC's best passers. Can he be that? There are certainly people who think so, but there will be a learning curve. Here's a look at the ranking of all 16 of the expected starting quarterbacks as we enter the season.
Philo transfers to the Gators from Georgia Tech, and reunites with his offensive coordinator. However, he has played in just eight games, and has more interceptions (3) than touchdowns (2). He'll need to adjust to the SEC quickly.
MacIntyre is a former four-star recruit, so there's talent there. However, he has played very little with just nine career passing attempts so far. The Volunteers will still have to decide if he's the starter, as they have some other options as well.

Tulsa National Little League has been disqualified from the Little League Softball Southwest Region Tournament, Little League International officials confirmed.
The Little League International Tournament Committee determined that the adult volunteers and parents did not provide "sufficient documentation to verify that all players were eligible to participate in the International Tournament based on either their school enrollment or bona fide habitation within the league's official boundaries," a statement released on Tuesday, July 21, said.
As a result, the committee removed the team from the Southwest Region Tournament and declared Tulsa National's previous game a forfeit. The Southwest Region Tournament will conclude with a one-game championship between Texas West (Helotes Little League) and Louisiana (Eastbank Little League) at 4:30 p.m. on July 21 in Waco, Texas.
The league requires all participating athletes to either reside within the league's boundaries through bona fide habitation or attend a school located within those boundaries. According to the statement, the tournament committee works closely with local leagues to verify eligibility documentation and to review any challenges or protests brought to their attention throughout the tournament.
Both finalist teams, in addition to Texas Easy Industrial, filed complaints against Tulsa National regarding eligibility rules.

Cohen & Steers (NYSE:CNS) reported higher second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings and ****** ets under management, as executives pointed to improving demand for real estate, infrastructure, preferred securities and broader real ****** ets strategies.
On the company's earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Amit Muni said Cohen & Steers generated adjusted earnings per share of $0.85, up from $0.79 in the first quarter and $0.73 in the year-earlier quarter. Net income was $44 million, rising 8% sequentially and 18% from the second quarter of last year.

Assets under management increased about 8% to more than $100 billion, driven by positive market performance and net inflows. Muni said the firm generated $1.3 billion of net inflows, "one of the strongest flow quarters in our recent history," while its institutional pipeline stood at $1.6 billion.
Revenue increased 5% from the prior quarter to $152 million, which Muni attributed to higher average ****** ets under management from market appreciation and net inflows. Total operating expenses rose 3% to $97 million, primarily due to higher incentive compensation accruals tied to increased revenue.

The Georgia Bulldogs have missed out on four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife, who is a member of the class of 2027. Fife was previously committed to the Tennessee Volunteers from Nov. 2025 to June 2026 and was predicted to commit to Georgia. However, the four-star committed to the Louisville Cardinals in a bit of a surprise.
Fife's commitment is an enormous recruiting win for coach Jeff Brohm and Louisville. The Cardinals needed some momentum on the recruiting trail and only have the nation's No. 50 recruiting class. Fife is one of Louisville's highest rated commitments. The Cardinals have 16 commitments in the class of 2027.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound defender is the No. 46 defensive lineman in the country, per the 247Sports composite rankings. Fife is the No. 390 prospect in the country and the No. 19 recruit in Alabama.
The new Louisville commitment plays high school football for Cherokee County in Centre, Alabama. Fife elected to decommit from Tennessee after taking official visits to Ole Miss, Tennessee and Georgia.
Georgia and coach Kirby Smart have 18 commitments in the 2027 cycle. UGA has the nation's No. 14 recruiting class.

Team Illinois recently returned from the Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, securing a sixth-place finish in the overall medal count.
The team, composed of 57 athletes and 16 coaches, competed in eight sports and earned a total of 54 medals, according to a community announcement.
The medal tally included 19 gold, 17 silver and 18 bronze medals. Team Illinois also achieved more than 30 placements from fourth to seventh place. More than 20 personal records were set by Team Illinois athletes.
The Special Olympics USA Games brought together 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers and 75,000 fans from across the United States.
Team Illinois excelled in several team events, including unified basketball, unified volleyball, swimming relays, bocce, athletics relays and bowling.

As the beginnings of a Mexico City thunderstorm swirl high above, dark clouds circling like a slow-motion whirlpool, a pair of English fans do not give a jot.
It is three hours before Mexico face England in the most anticipated match at the Estadio Azteca in 40 years. Attendees are being warned to take cover as the police implement their electrical storm protocol. But these adults, merry on pure vibes, are engrossed in the most childlike of games: a chalk-drawn hopscotch on the gravel, outside the stadium's Cabecera Norte end, with 'Viva Mexico' at the top. And the locals, kids and adults alike, are loving it.
And when embarking on a lap of the outer perimeter of the World Cup's most iconic venue before the blockbuster last-16 occasion, similar feel-good scenes are at every corner. Event volunteers dressed in blue and green form a 'Limbo' dance opportunity for passers-by; half a dozen Mexican dance groups greet ticket holders to the south of the main entrance; Mexicans joust with English in gentle ribbing as they queue for entry into the arena.
It is an intoxicating, smile-inducing, dopamine-hitting environment. This is the essence of the biggest event in world sport: the amalgamation of different nationalities and cultures, old and young, male and female. All coalescing, with passion and fervour, in a setting completely irrational and illogical, if it were not for two national football teams going head-to-head.
This is the premise of founder Jules Rimet's vision when he formed the very first World Cup in 1930. In his words: "It's about bringing together countries from around the world, people who might otherwise have nothing in common… at least for a little while." And, mercifully, 96 years on in its 23rd edition, the tournament still fulfils this overarching ethos, despite all the factors working against those in the stands.

The 2026 Major Legue Baseball Draft is now in our rearview mirror. While it wasn't a 2024 or 2025-esque firestorm of Tennessee Volunteers flying off the board, Tennessee still had a solid six players selected over the two-day event.
Let's take a closer look at who went where.
CB-A, No. 32: Tegan Kuhns, St. Louis Cardinals
The headliner was, of course, Tennessee ace Tegan Kuhns. He had been projected from anywhere as high as 24 to Seattle down to below where he was taken, which was at No. 32 overall by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Yes, the Cardinals. For the second straight year, St. Louis tabbed the top of Tennessee's pitching rotation early in the draft. Last year, St. Louis took Liam Doyle with the No. 5 overall pick.

"The ocean is a magic place for me - to be able to access it is so important," says Cam Treble, who competed in the English Para Surfing Open in Cornwall.
He took up para surfing - in which a disabled individual uses a board - following an accident that left him partially paralysed, and talks about the "epic" event.
Thanking "the incredible volunteers" at the event on Fistral Beach, Newquay, Treble said, prior to his accident a year ago, he had been "in the ocean free diving, spear fishing, surfing, kite surfing - all sorts."
Surfing England said Abbie Potts and Finn Jones, both members of the Team England Para Development Squad, secured medals during the event on Saturday.
The organisation also gave Treble a special shout-out for "matching the pace" of his competitors despite it being only his second time para surfing.

With its brilliant orange wings and black markings, the high brown fritillary ***** erfly was once widespread in Wales and England.
But now it's one of the rarest of all British ***** erflies, with it numbers declining by 62% since 1970.
One reason is its incredibly specific requirements to survive.
"They are the pickiest," says Paul Dunn, who for more than 30 years has been working hard among the bracken of the Alun Valley at Old Castle Down, in the Vale of Glamorgan, to revive the ***** erfly's fortunes.
And now, the volunteers have enlisted the help of a far more common animal, by allowing cows to graze on the site.

Twotime World Series champion Shane Victorino volunteered at the Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys & Girls Club in Philadelphia Saturday morning.
Major League Baseball, Phillies Charities, Inc. and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia teamed up to refurbish the Shane Victorino Nicetown Club as part of MLB Together's yearlong volunteer initiative.
About 100 volunteers spent the morning painting and deep cleaning learning and social **** es inside the club, while others worked outside on seeding, planting and landscaping improvements. The effort was supported by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and additional special guests.
The project contributed to MLB Together's goal of reaching 250,000 collective volunteer hours by the end of 2026 in honor of America's 250th anniversary.
According to MLB, the initiative is part of a broader investment of more than $5.5 million in community projects across the region aimed at expanding youth access to baseball and softball, supporting veterans and providing educational and nutritional resources.

Jared Grindlinger made a big move heading into the 2026 season by choosing to undergo reclassification to shift from a junior to a senior in order to take the next step in his development and move even closer to the next level of his baseball career.
It was a move that clearly paid off. The Huntington Beach High School two-way player made an impression as both a pitcher and a hitter in his senior season that was so strong that he now profiles as a first-round pick in the 2026 MLB Draft as MLB's no. 16 prospect.
"It was kind of crushing at first, but we understood what he was doing," Huntington Beach head coach Benji Medure said of Grindlinger's decision to reclassify. "Over the year, you could see him grow and you could see him focus and you could see him do all the little things that a great senior leader would do... The biggest thing that I got out of it was his leadership qualities and how he handled himself. That's what I'm most proud of."
In a way, Grindlinger was following in the footsteps of his older brother Trent, a catcher at the University of Tennessee who just wrapped up his freshman season with the Volunteers. Jared is a Tennessee commit as well, but the Big League's are surely calling for him.
Jumping to senior year was clearly a calculated for Grindlinger and he managed to keep up with the physical demands by adding what he said was 15 pounds and by building his confidence to get ready to compete at the next level.

The Georgia Bulldogs have added a commitment from four-star offensive tackle recruit Miller Westfield, who is a member of the class of 2027. Westfield committed to Georgia over the LSU Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers.
The in-state offensive tackle prospect is Georgia's 18th commitment in the class of 2027. Westfield's commitment raises Georgia to the No. 13 recruiting class in the nation. He's the Bulldogs' first commitment since June.
Westfield plays high school football for Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive tackle is the No. 43 recruit in Georgia. The rising senior is the No. 390 recruit in the country and the No. 40 offensive tackle prospect.
The Roswell standout played left tackle as a junior has a lot of potential as a pass protector. Westfield has the length to succeed at the next level will look to add some weight before joining the Dawgs. The four-star has good athleticism and mobility.
Westfield has received over 20 scholarship offers in 2026. The newest Georgia commitment is the sixth offensive lineman to commit to UGA in the class of 2027.

Guard Dante Maddox Jr. scored a team-high 21 points on 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range in 31 minutes to lead the Philadelphia Sixers to a 101-93 win against the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Maddox added four rebounds and a steal. It was the first NBA Summer League game for both teams.
Maddox, who averaged 7.3 points per game in 34 games for the Xavier Musketeers as a senior during the 2024-25 season, played for Okapi Aalst in Belgium last season.
In May, he was named 2025–26 BNXT League MVP.
Maddox also played two seasons at Cal State Fullerton and two seasons at Toledo.

Florida State has bolstered its 2027 recruiting class significantly after landing eight commitments in June. One of them was four-star running back Jayden Miles, but the Seminoles are after another talented player at the position.
Three-star Asa Barnes received his first offer from FSU, and despite former running backs coach David "Yak" Johnson no longer being with the program, that hasn't stopped the Seminoles from pursuing Barnes heavily. They have found themselves as one of his four finalists, as his commitment date has been set for 5 p.m. ET on July 29. Barnes will choose between the Arkansas Razorbacks, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and Florida State.
As things currently sit, Arkansas and Tennessee are leading. However, FSU shouldn't be taken lightly, as their persistence has kept them as a major contender.
"They kept recruiting me hard and kept showing interest," Barnes told Rivals. "I can see myself thriving there too. Coach Norvell is going to get the program back winning, and I like my relationship with Coach Martin."
Barnes was a beast during his junior year at Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee. He registered 1,775 all-purpose yards and scored 31 touchdowns. He helped the Chargers go 14-0 and win the state ***** le.

Four-star combo guard Jordan Mize from Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, California, received an offer from the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
The 6-5, 190-pounder with high upside holds other offers from the San Francisco Dons, California Golden Bears, Sacramento State Hornets, San Diego Toreros, USC Trojans, Oregon Ducks, Oregon State Beavers, Washington Huskies, Arizona State Sun Devils, Utah Utes, TCU Horned Frogs, LSU Tigers, and Tennessee Volunteers.
Mize shot up the Rivals rankings, competing with the Northwest Rotary Rebels (an AAU combination program with Portland, Oregon's Rose City Rebels, and Seattle, Washington's Seattle Rotary) on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring and summer. The Sacramento, California native is currently placed as the No. 20 overall recruit in the Class of 2028, the No. 4 shooting guard, and the No. 5 player coming out of the state of California.
He averaged 16.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.3 **** ists, and 2.1 steals per game during the spring with the Rotary Rebels. Mize is improving into a two-way versatility threat, but he looks his best when attacking downhill and finishing through contact when watching his highlights at the Nevada Live Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, in late June.
The 17-year-old is still growing and raw for his young age.

There's no stopping the Clatsop County Special Olympic athletes. Brittney Clarke and Jacob McCarr competed in three different events at the 2026 USA Games in Minneapolis. Clarke won gold in the 400-meter walk and also medaled in the 4 x 100-meter relay and mini javelin. McCarr placed fifth in the shot put, was a member of the second-place co-ed 4 x 100 relay team and competed in the 100-yard dash. After Clarke and McCarr brought home medals, Clarke and the rest of the athletes in Clatsop County Special Olympics are set to go on the road and compete this weekend.
The 2026 Oregon Summer Games are slated for July 10 through the 12, and are slated to take place at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Twenty Clatsop County Special Olympics athletes are set to compete in two sports: track and field and bocce ball.
Clarke will lead a list of 12 total track and field athletes. She will be joined by Alex Cary, Joey Bailey, Nicholas Bailey, Blake Chick, Mathias Costello, Marie Kajula, Jack Kain, Jonathan Lempea, Beau Routh, Cheyenne Valunzuela, Megan Wilson and coaches Bill and Karen Lempea. There will also be seven community members going as volunteers, including: Phil and Julie Chick, Michael and Danielle Cary, Clatsop County Special Olympics Program Director David McAloney, Susan Hiebert and Tracie Hunter.
Bocce is one of the newer sports added to the Special Olympics calendar this year and Clatsop County has a total of eight athletes participating this weekend: Brandi Higgins, Angelica Lizarraga, Ben Johnson, David Killion, Jesse Banks, Jerry Allen, Jackie Bleech and Nikki Fletcher. Coaches Patty Kain and Brenda Higgins will also travel with the athletes.
The Italian based game has slowly been gaining popularity in America after getting its start in Italy and other European countries. The lawn game is similar to bowling where teams roll large ******* to try and get them as close as possible to a smaller target called a pallino. It can be played on either grass, sand or a dedicated hardcourt. Italian General Giuseppe Garibaldi popularized the game in Italy during the late 19th century and it has since become an Olympic sport.

The Tennessee Vols haven't been on many folks' radars this offseason. With plenty of roster turnover and an unsettled quarterback battle, the Vols have the looks of a big question mark for the 2026 season amid what should be a wide open and entertaining SEC.
However, the Vols had quite the makeover on the defensive side of the ball going back to December of last year. Tim Banks was fired, and Jim Knowles was brought down from Penn State. Knowles brought a number of his former Nittany Lions players with him to Knoxville with him, and that included three noteworthy defenders in EDGE Chaz Coleman, LB Amare Campbell, and S Dejuan Lane.
Well, Coleman is gone, as all Tennessee fans know, but Campbell should have a strong impact in the middle this season. And it's in the middle where CBS Sports' Chris Hummer thinks the Vols have the best group in the entire country.
Hummer listed the best group nationally at each position, and the Vols' linebackers got the nod.
The Volunteers have the deepest linebacker unit in the country. For example, Edwin Spillman (81) and Jeremiah Telander (80) led Tennessee in tackles last year and are back in 2026. Yet there's a real chance neither starts due to the presence of Arion Carter — an expected draft pick who returned to school because of injury — and Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, a four-star addition out of the portal who's totaled 179 tackles, 20 TFLs and 9.5 sacks over the past two seasons.

CATIA LA MAR/BOGOTA, July 7 (Reuters) - At the La Esperanza cemetery in western Venezuela, local volunteers have been digging graves for victims of the country's devastating twin earthquakes last month, unloading coffins and helping families search ‌for loved ones.
In the hills above the hard-hit town of Catia la Mar, local volunteers working alongside some cemetery workers have buried 314 people ‌at La Esperanza cemetery, community council head Elis Zabala, 33, said on Tuesday.
About 100 of the people who were buried are identified only by a number linked to morgue records.
"We put our heart and soul into it, but I feel tired," said Zabala, adding that the volunteers are exhausted. Many in the community also need aid like fuel, medicine, water and food.

Tennessee’s Adidas reveals continued on Wednesday, giving us our first look at an alternate Summitt Blue set. These will be worn across all women’s sports — basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. The blue alternate first made its debut during the 2022-23 season.
First up, the basketball side, complete with orange Lady Vols script.

Tennessee ended a ten year relationship with Nike last week, going back to Adidas for the first time since the 2014 season. The Volunteers unveiled their orange look on Monday, along with the white on Tuesday. Back on the men’s side, Tennessee will continue the new ‘dark mode’ tradition Thursday with a few fresh new versions from Adidas.
Tennessee’s ‘smokey grey’ looks will be revealed later on this month.

The Florida State Seminoles are still building their linebacker board in the 2028 recruiting cycle, but it has already taken a hit.
They extended a scholarship offer to Ryquan Butler in June after he impressed at their Seminole Showcase Camp. At the time, he was an uncommitted prospect, but that has changed with him committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday.
Butler is from Notasulga, Alabama, and is currently unranked, but that will likely be changing. In addition to FSU and Alabama, the Tennessee Volunteers, Ole Miss Rebels, and Auburn Tigers have also offered the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder.
While it will likely be tough to pull him away from the in-state program, the Seminoles have plenty of time to try and pull off the flip, something they have had success doing under Mike Norvell. Butler is the only one of the 15 linebackers that FSU has offered in the 2028 recruiting cycle to commit, giving Ernie Sims plenty of time to make a move with their remaining targets.
Butler had a breakout sophomore season at Loachapoka High School, helping them go 8-4 and playing all over the field. On defense, he recorded 54 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, one interception, and two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also caught seven passes for 126 yards and four touchdowns and returned a punt for a touchdown.

On the heels of questionable behavior from fans towards Wyndham Clark at the U.S. Open, the R&A announced Wednesday that a code of conduct will be enforced at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
With a crowd of 300,000 expected to visit the Southport, England venue next week, the protocol “aims to ensure that players, spectators, volunteers, officials, staff and the local community can enjoy a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience.” The guidelines will be outlined to fans through on-site signage, digital channels and ticket communications.
At last month’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, the Long Island galleries were occasionally hostile to Clark during Sunday’s final round. This behavior included unfriendly remarks, jeers for misses and, perhaps most curiously, silence towards well-played shots. Several fans were escorted off the property due to their behavior. The reception did not deter Clark, who went on to secure his second national championship by a stroke.
While the Open crowds are historically warm and respectable, they too have crossed the line, most notably in 2023 in their treatment towards eventual champion Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool.
“The atmosphere at the Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship,” said R&A CEO Mark Darbon. “Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.

Purdue men's basketball has another upper-tier nonconference series in the works,
Villanova coach Kevin Willard said on the "Inside College Basketball Now" podcast the Wildcats are working on scheduling a home-and-home series with the Boilermakers to begin in 2027. IndyStar confirmed the programs have discussed scheduling each other.
Willard did not specify whether Villanova's home game would be played on campus at Finneran Pavilion, or in downtown Philadelphia at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Purdue has looked for semi-neutral return agreements as part of the Indy Classic, including a recent series against Auburn.
Purdue is already scheduled to play Tennessee in Knoxville on Dec. 11, 2027. It traditionally plays two or three power conference or high-major opponents in addition to two or three games in a multi-team event around Thanksgiving. This coming season, for instance, it plays Gonzaga on a neutral court, at Iowa State to conclude a home-and-home agreement, and at home against the Volunteers to begin one.
Purdue and Villanova have played three times since 2016 in one-off games. The Wildcats won 79-76 in 2016 as part of the Gavitt Games series between the Big Ten and Big East. Carsen Edwards scored 42 points in an 87-61 victory in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Purdue also won 80-74 in the championship game of the 2021 Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Hundreds of firefighters battled wildfires in Portugal, Greece and Spain on Sunday, with Spain and Italy sending reinforcements to Portugal to help with a massive blaze burning for more than three days.
Authorities urged residents in parts of Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, to remain indoors and shut their windows and doors due to toxic smoke from a burning recycling plant that was engulfed by a wildfire.
Another major wildfire broke out Sunday afternoon west of the Greek capital, Athens. The fire department said 210 firefighters, backed up by volunteers, specialized teams and 29 aircraft, including water-dropping planes and helicopters, were deployed to battle the blaze burning through pine forest in the Mandra area. Authorities were racing to contain the blaze before nightfall, when aircraft can no longer perform firefighting operations.
In central Portugal's Vouzela area, more than 1,200 firefighters backed up by nearly 400 vehicles and 15 aircraft tried to put out a blaze that broke out Thursday, according to the Civil Protection authority. The wildfire had burned across an area of 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres) by Sunday, information from the European Union's Copernicus satellite mapping agency showed.
The EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid said that Spain sent 120 firefighters and 45 vehicles as reinforcements to Portugal on Friday, while three firefighting aircraft from Italy and Spain were also dispatched to help.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — The fallout from Venezuela's powerful twin quakes has evolved into a major test for acting President Delcy Rodríguez, sending her scrambling to prevent the humanitarian disaster from becoming a political one as her mandate as interim leader expires Friday.
A day after Rodríguez angrily defended the competence of her government's relief effort at her first news conference since the June 24 disaster, her main rival, exiled Venezuelan ******* el Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, issued her own appeal.
Machado on Friday argued that the government's quake response exposed its critical weaknesses and that she should return to Venezuela to help "the transition process, especially after the tragedy."
"My presence stabilizes the situation; it is part of the organizing forces that the country needs at a time when the total absence of the state has become evident," Machado said, referring to widespread criticism of the government's earthquake response as slow and disorganized. "The country needs figures it can trust." She spoke to reporters from Panama.
The quakes have killed 2,645 people and injured over 12,500 others, according tallies released Friday by the government. Machado's opposition movement has set up an online database to locate the missing — a list of 36,000 people as of Friday. The party has mobilized volunteers to collect donations in Venezuela and solicited aid from the country's vast diaspora.
