Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach will take on Oklahoma senior Ryder Cowan in the first round of the U.S. Amateur match play on Aug. 12 at the Merion Country Club in Ardmore, Pa.
The two will tee off at 1:50 p.m.
Russell tied for fifth in the 36-hole stroke player qualifier on Aug. 11 and is the sixth seed in match play. Cowan birdied the first playoff hole, the par-3 13th, to join 10 other players who had to battle in a 16-for-11 playoff for the final spots in the 64-player field for match play.
Russell, 17 and a verbal commit to Florida State in 2027, has already reached the championship match of the U.S. Junior Amateur and the semifinals of the Western Amateur this summer.
Russell was the co-medalist at the U.S. Junior Amateur and the medalist at the Western Amateur. He breezed through five matches in the U.S. Junior at Saucon Valley before losing to Noah Maclauchlan and fell to Jay Leng in the Western Amateur semifinals.

You can go home again, and Rihanna did go home again this month to celebrate the annual Crop Over Festival in her native Barbados. And while she was there, she took her three children with longtime partner A$AP Rocky — RZA, 4, Riot, 3 and Rocki, 10 months — to visit the road named in her honor.

Indiana Fever All-Star guard Caitlin Clark publicly backed Stephanie White after Indiana's second-year head coach was booed on the team's home court at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The boo birds rained down on White ahead of a 106-92 win over the New York Liberty, which marked the Fever's first game since Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington's hard foul on Sophie Cunningham and subsequent "White Privilege" post Aug. 8 reignited conversations about player safety and race. Some Fever fans felt White didn't adequately defend Cunningham, with Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith going as far as calling for White to be fired.
"I told (Stephanie White) that before the game, there was no way we were losing this game for her. And it's tough. That's my head coach. I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest," Clark said in her postgame remarks. "It's professional sports, people are going to boo, but at the end of the day... we're going to ride for her and we're always going to have her back and that's never going to tear our locker room apart."
Clark added, "I just love her and I feel for her because I know it can be a lot at times and she does a great job a lot of times blocking it out, but there's other moments where it can get under your skin and that's just being human and that's just life."

If the Wrigley Chewing Gum company weren't so deeply **** ociated with the arch-rivals of the St. Louis ballclub, they'd probably offer the Cardinals the opportunity to be the new face of Doublemint Gum, on account of all the double killings they turned tonight. In the absence of an endorsement deal, the Redbirds will have to settle for winning the game.
The Phillies put runners on the corners on the first, but didn't convert them into runs. And the same was true in the second, as the Phillies put runners on the corners and saw the inning end on a Justin Crawford 6-4-3 GIDP. The Cardinals soon found themselves in a comparable situation, putting runners on first and third against Cristopher Sánchez on singles from José Fermin and Masyn Winn. And the Redbirds, wanting to be gracious and considerate hosts, chose not to upstage their visitors and promptly hit into a 5-4-3 twin killing. ARDMORE, Pa. – Having just finished 36 holes of stroke play at this 126th U.S. Amateur in 2 over par, Luke Poulter walked out of the scoring tent behind Merion's 18th hole on Tuesday afternoon and exclaimed, "I'm going to need a miracle."
His caddie has seen miracles around this place before.
Florida head coach J.C. Deacon, who is on the bag for his star rising senior, reached the semifinals of the 2005 U.S. Amateur at Merion before his opponent, Dillon Dougherty, won each of the last two holes with improbable shots that still get Deacon emotional thinking about them.
"I went from winning and playing in the Masters to it being over just like that," Deacon said.
Trailing Deacon 1 down with two holes to play, Dougherty missed the green left at the par-3 17th, prompting Deacon to say to himself on the long walk down to the green, I'm going to the Masters. But Dougherty then chipped in for birdie to win the hole and tie the match. On the next hole, the par-4 18th, Dougherty hit the broadcast booth with his approach and faced a 50-yard shot from a nasty lie. But again, Dougherty produced some magic, hitting a full flop that clanked off the flagstick to stone dead.

The afternoon wave at PCC and the Merion Country Club still had a lot of golf to play but Russell will easily beat the cut to the low 64 players, which was projected to be 1-over at the time he finished his round. Given a suspension because of darkness in the first round on Aug. 10, it's unlikely the field will finish the second round before night falls on Aug. 11.
Russell's first match-play opponent won't be known until the cut is made. Match play begins on Aug. 13 at Merion.
Russell began his round at No. 10 and swapped birdies for bogeys twice before making birdie at No. 18, then turning and making another birdie at No. 1.

The biggest question CBS Sports had to answer at its media days on Tuesday was asked and answered in under three minutes.
After acknowledging the Tony Romo-sized elephant in the room, the network was forced to explain the down-ballot impact on the rest of its broadcast booths, with J.J. Watt being promoted to the lead booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was placed on indefinite leave following an OWI arrest.
If there's a silver lining, it's that Ian Eagle doesn't really have a type. He's called games with Dan Fouts, Charles Davis and now Watt at CBS, on top of a rotating cast of NBA and college basketball partners over the years, and he just tends to make whoever's next to him sound better. Watt basically said as much heading into this past season, giving Eagle the credit for chemistry that helped the two of them crack the top five of Awful Announcing's 2025 NFL announcer rankings. That flexibility is CBS's biggest ****** et here. This isn't a booth that lives or dies on one specific pairing.
CBS has elected to pair Eagle with Ross Tucker and Evan Washburn, as the two have done many Thursday Night Football broadcasts together on Westwood One before "The Bird" departed that role following the 2024 season. Initially, Tucker was seen as having "a pretty good chance" to fill the open spot alongside Andrew Catalon in the fourth booth, but Romo's arrest seems to have changed that calculus.
Tucker has been a fixture in CBS's NFL rotation since the 2023 season, regularly working alongside Tom McCarthy as part of the network's sixth broadcast crew. He also calls college football for CBS and handles radio duties for Westwood One's Thursday Night Football coverage, rotating with Devin McCourty alongside Kevin Kugler. The Princeton alum and former offensive lineman also hosts the Ross Tucker Football Podcast for DraftKings and calls Philadelphia Eagles preseason games on local television.

The defending OHSAA girls basketball Division I state champions are seeking a new head coach for the 2026-27 season.
Jeremey Finn has stepped down from his position effective immediately.
Finn has accepted a position as an ******* istant coach with the Wittenberg women's basketball program, according to Fairmont athletic director Chris Weaver.
Finn had been the head coach at Fairmont for seven seasons and compiled a 124-42 overall record. He led Fairmont to its first undefeated season in school history during its 2025-26 campaign in which the Firebirds won the OHSAA Division I state championship. They beat Princeton 61-55 in overtime at UD Arena.
Finn won multiple OPSMA D-I Coach of the Year awards with Fairmont and coached several players that went on to play collegiately, including Ms. Basketball winner and McDonald's All-American Maddy Westbeld.

At 6 over and well off the projected cut line of 1 over, Stout will become the first player to start the championship at No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and go on to miss match play since Keita Nakajima at Oakmont in 2021.
Since WAGR was introduced in 2007, world Nos. 1 are now 11 for 18 in making the cut. Just six of those 11 have advanced past the Round of 32 while Peter Uihlein remains the only one to win, when he did so at Chambers Bay in 2010.

To think back four years ago, when I first decided I wanted to pursue a career in journalism — and sports journalism, for that matter — I could not have predicted the fulfillment and opportunities it has given me.
Naturally, sports have been a big part of my life from the beginning. My first word as a baby was "so" — not just because it was easy to get me to say, but because it was the name of the former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder So Taguchi, who played for a team that I was raised loving (thanks Mom and Dad!). I know that said team probably isn't popular around the Lafayette area, but please give me some grace.
At the start, my love for sports was on the field, playing baseball, soccer and basketball. As I grew up and began high school, I loved it in a different way. I started to keep closer track of sports leagues and debating numerous topics with my friends, which resulted in a couple of moderately successful Instagram accounts that I frequently posted on. But that was just the groundwork for what I ultimately decided to do.
Choosing the Missouri School of Journalism wasn't very difficult. I had always excelled in reading and writing far more than I did in math and science, and I sure wrote a lot. Even in fifth grade, I spent some of my free time typing up mini biographies of a variety of people, from U.S. presidents to Larry Bird to Robert Downey Jr.
I didn't have a whole lot of journalism experience before college, but the stories I wrote for my high school paper showed me I not only could do it, but that I really, really enjoyed it. And with home being only two hours away from one of the most renowned journalism schools in the country, it was a no-brainer for me.

I started to keep closer track of sports leagues and debating numerous topics with my friends, which resulted in a couple of moderately successful Instagram accounts that I frequently posted on. But that was just the groundwork for what I ultimately decided to do.
Choosing the Missouri School of Journalism wasn't very difficult. I had always excelled in reading and writing far more than I did in math and science, and I sure wrote a lot. Even in fifth grade, I spent some of my free time typing up mini biographies of a variety of people, from U.S. presidents to Larry Bird to Robert Downey Jr.
I didn't have a whole lot of journalism experience before college, but the stories I wrote for my high school paper showed me I not only could do it, but that I really, really enjoyed it. And with home being only two hours away from one of the most renowned journalism schools in the country, it was a no-brainer for me.

He won, however, on the second extra hole, defeating a gallant Alistair Docherty.
Harris shot 12-under 59 – the second such number in as many weeks on the secondary circuit – to post 22 under at The Club at Indian Creek in Omaha, Nebraska.
Docherty then matched him by closing in 7-under 28, making birdie on his final four holes. He shot 64 to force sudden death.
After a pair of pars to open, Harris made par on the second hole while Docherty made bogey.

The Philadelphia Eagles failed to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2025 in no small part part due to an underwhelming offense. Entering 2026, there's hope that they've righted the ship on that front as the Birds look to get back on top of the NFC. Eagles fans are feeling optimistic about the direction of the team under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. There's also a high level of confidence in Vic Fangio, who could conceivably oversee the best defense in the NFL.

Acting runs in Melanie Griffith's family.
Her mom Tippi Hedren got her start as a model before she got her big break when director Alfred Hitchcock discovered her and cast her in his 1963 classic, The Birds. From then on, Hedren starred in other films such as Marnie, Through the Eyes of a Killer, Pacific Heights and more.

Her mom Tippi Hedren got her start as a model before she got her big break when director Alfred Hitchcock discovered her and cast her in his 1963 classic, The Birds. From then on, Hedren starred in other films such as Marnie, Through the Eyes of a Killer, Pacific Heights and more.

Two Florida business owners have been charged with third-degree felonies after allegedly spreading about 1,500 "toxic" mothballs across a beach in hopes of keeping an "imperiled" bird species from nesting there.
If convicted, they could each face up to five years in prison, fines of up to $5,000 and up to five years of probation.
The problem started in late April when beachgoers noticed mothballs on the white, sugary sand on St. Pete Beach in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and bird-loving volunteers from the Audubon Society mobilized. They plucked about 1,000 of the small, white orbs from the sand behind the Plaza Beach Hotel.

When the Philadelphia Eagles host the Washington Commanders in Week 1, the Birds' NFC East rival will be missing starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Tunsil suffered a torn triceps injury on Saturday morning that will reportedly cause the 32-year-old blocker to miss "at least a significant portion of the regular season."
With the Eagles also set to play the Commanders in Week 8, it seems like Tunsil will miss both of Washington's games against Philly this season.
Tunsil is obviously one of the best players on the Commanders' roster; he signed a contract extension that made him the NFL's highest-paid offensive lineman on an annual basis earlier this year.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Beau Hossler handled a half-dozen tough par putts and two rain delays Saturday for a 4-under 66 that gave him a share of the lead with Michael Brennan going into the final round of the Wyndham Championship with postseason berths at stake.
Hossler is No. 122 in the FedExCup, knowing his only mathematical chance to be among the top 70 to advance to playoffs is to win for the first time on the PGA Tour.
Brennan, who went from the PGA Tour Americas to a PGA Tour card by winning the Bank of Utah Championship last fall, made a birdie putt from 15 feet on the last hole for a 63.
They were at 16-under 194, one shot ahead of Scottish Open winner Tom Kim (63), and two shots clear of 44-year-old Alex Noren and Alex Smalley, who each shot 65.
Such is the nature of the final regular-season tournament — and the stakes — that nine of the top 10 players on the leaderboard shot 66 or lower on Saturday.

Since leaving General Hospital and her role as Sam McCall behind in 2024, Kelly Monaco has remained relatively quiet and even went more than a year without posting on social media. In May, she broke her silence with a positive post as she turned 50 and looked toward the future. Now, she has made another Instagram appearance detailing her perfect day with her hometown team.
Monaco just spent more time back east in her hometown of Philadelphia with her favorite football team and her favorite football family.
"A day that could only happen in Philly," she wrote. "The best part? Sharing it all with kellysmom1, my nephew _kalebb, and one of my closest friends daveophilly. 20+ years of friendship, two Philly kids, and somehow Dave always finds a way to make every visit home unforgettable.
