NEW YORK (AP) — Five years after leaving the Houston Astros, longtime pitching coach Brent Strom is returning as a consultant to help the team's struggling staff.
Strom will join the club for Friday's game against the New York Mets. Houston manager Joe Espada said Strom will be uniform and in the dugout during games.
"I'm excited about that," Espada said Thursday before the Astros concluded a three-game series against the New York Yankees. "Strommy is one of the architects for this organization on the pitching side of things. I'm excited to bring him back, listen to his perspective, his experience. I feel like there's a value in having him around right now as we make this push here to win the division."
Strom was Houston's pitching coach from 2014-21, when the Astros made three World Series appearances. He left after the 2021 World Series loss to Atlanta, and Joshua Miller has served as Houston's pitching coach for five seasons.
After leaving the Astros, Strom spent the next three seasons in the same capacity for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who reached the World Series in 2023.

Things have been tough at the major league level in the health department. Key players like Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom, Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers and Jacob Wilson are all done for the year thanks to various injuries requiring surgery. Every team deals with big injuries but even that is a bad bill of health.
The injuries aren't just affecting the big league team either. Earlier this year one of the organization's top pitching prospects in Wei-En Lin had to undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2026 season prematurely and likely affecting next year's campaign as well. Considering he's still only 20 years old the lost couple of years shouldn't completely derail his career, but it's always a **** mer to lose multiple years of development while you're ascending the minor league ladder. The team also saw infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer go down with an unfortunate injury, but luckily that doesn't sound like it'll be a cause for concern long-term.
Those aren't the only notable injuries affecting the A's top prospects. We just learned yesterday that top prospect Leo De Vries, widely considered the top one or two prospects in the entire sport, it dealing with what sounds like a serious shoulder injury. Serious enough that he's shut down from throwing a baseball while he recovers down in Arizona:

The Atlanta Falcons appear to have found a gem in undrafted free agent Jack Strand. The rookie quarterback went off in Saturday's 34-6 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts, passing for 212 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of 132.5.
Strand, a Division II legend, pushed the ball down the field with ease and also made a few plays with his legs. Even Falcons president of football Matt Ryan got fired up when Strand ripped off a 16-yard scramble for a touchdown.
Strand broke every school passing record during his four years at Minnesota State Moorhead (2022-2025), racking up 13,161 passing yards, 126 touchdowns and 50 interceptions. So why did he go undrafted, and what would have happened if Strand had transferred to a bigger school instead of staying at MSU-Moorhead?
NFL ****** yst Thor Nystrom claimed one of Strand's college coaches told him that if the Dragons QB had accepted one of his NIL offers, he could have been one of the top-3 quarterbacks in the 2026 NFL Draft. The A's also announced first baseman Nick Kurtz was moved to the 60-day IL with a strained right thumb. Outfielder Tyler Soderstrom, already out for the season because of a left hip injury, underwent surgery in Vail, Colorado.
Infielder Michael Stefanic and right-hander Kade Morris were called up from Triple-A and right-hander Taylor Rashi was optioned to Las Vegas.
Wilson is on the IL for the third time this season. He has a 115-game streak without committing an error, a major league record for a shortstop. Wilson, an All-Star last year, is hitting .266 with 37 RBIs in 80 games.
Kurtz, the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year, was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 4. He was batting .256 with 21 home runs and 69 RBIs in 99 games.

GENEVA (AP) — FIFA's removal of the senior official who said Gianni Infantino deceived staff with his World Cup sell-off plan was unacceptable, Norway soccer president Lise Klaveness said on Tuesday while urging other leaders at the governing body to resist potentially damaging orders.
The firing of FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour late Monday came 17 days after his statement to the ***** ociated Press criticizing Infantino's $20 billion private equity project that helped to end it hours later.
"Now he is thrown out and we are supposed to move on. It's unacceptable, it's management by fear," Klaveness told the AP in a telephone interview, describing Lamour as "the best football administrator I have ever met."
"Now we also have to call upon FIFA leadership and the administration to not submit to orders you know are not in the interests of football," Klaveness added, especially targeting FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström.

Senior punter Daniel Hughes transferred from the New Mexico Lobos to play for Florida State in 2026. He's coming off a season in which he was an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection, which has landed him on the Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List.
The Ray Guy Award is presented to the nation's top FBS punter. It was first given to Kevin Stemke of the Wisconsin Badgers in 2000. No FSU punter has ever won the honor, but Alex Mastromanno finished as the runner-up in 2023 and 2024.
Hughes had a very good season for New Mexico in 2025. He averaged 45.4 yards per punt on 41 attempts with 13 punts landing inside the 20-yard line. Hughes also booted 13 punts over 50 yards last season.
Florida State has a few other players that are on preseason watch lists. Wide receiver Duce Robinson is on the Maxwell and Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, and kicker Gabe Panikowski is on the Groza Award Watch List.

Leicester City have paid an undisclosed fee to BK Häcken to secure the player's services on a permanent basis. Nyström has signed a two-year deal at The King Power Stadium.
The 25-year-old joins Leicester City after spending the last two years playing her football in the Swedish OBOS Damallsvenskan. The forward won the league **** le and the UEFA Women's Europa Cup with BK Häcken.

The MLB best home run bets couldn't build momentum after snapping the cold streak on Saturday. Instead, Wilyer Abreu and Tyler Soderstrom failed to homer on Monday.
The season's record for home run bets sits at 19-74, with three no-bets. As a reminder, home run props are long-shot bets, and the record won't be aesthetically pleasing.
Still, the season's profits are underwhelming after grinding all year, checking in at $61 for anyone who bet $100 on each of the touted home run bets at the listed odds. It's not ideal. A small profit is better than being in the red, though.
Wednesday's MLB slate offers an opportunity to bolster the season's profit and create some wiggle room to finish the season in the black. A slugging first baseman and a sweet-swinging, left-handed outfielder have the most appealing home run props today.

A day after snapping their nine-game losing streak the club made it two in a row as they won their road trip and series finale against the Boston Red Sox in a close 4-3 contest. They now sit at 47-71 and will stay out of the league cellar for another day.

This evening football will finally return to our TV sets, as the NFL's first preseason game of the year kicks off between the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals in the annual Hall of Fame game.
Later this week on Saturday afternoon the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony will take place in Canton, Ohio - as the class of 2026 officially enters the hall. That includes Larry Fitzgerald, Drew Brees, Luke Kuechly, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig.
As for the Atlanta Falcons, there are a few potential future Hall of Famers currently on the roster, according to ESPN - where Bill Barnwell has running back Bijan Robinson alone in the "Keep it up" tier for Atlanta:
