As we prepare some crucial showdown games in Week 5, let's tie a bow on Week 4 in our latest Touchdown/Chunk Play/First Down/Behind the Chains retrospective:
Touchdown
PURE BULLDAWG: We turn south to Las Cruces, and one of the most impressive wins so far among the Class 6A ranks this season, that being Las Cruces High's 41-0 beatdown of Hobbs.
The offensive sluggishness that defined the early portion of the season seems to be a thousand miles in the rear-view mirror after Las Cruces rolled into Hobbs and put the hammer down on the Eagles.
The transition period for Las Cruces clearly is over, and you can now see the Bulldawgs have gained their bearings in real time.

ATLANTA — Tennessee defensive lineman Daevin Hobbs left the Georgia Tech game with an injury in the first quarter on Sept. 12.
Hobbs was shaken up on a play with 11:14 remaining in the opening quarter. After lying on the turf for a couple of minutes, he walked slowly off the field on his own power and went directly to the injury tent.
It appeared to be a lower body injury. Hobbs was limited in preseason practice by a foot injury.
Hobbs is an important piece of UT's defensive line rotation. The senior has played in 33 games in his Vols career.

Bobby Bowden's former Killearn Estates home could remain in the Seminole family.
Florida State alumnus and Tallahassee real estate agent Reagan Hobbs, who purchased the iconic property at auction last spring, told the Tallahassee Democrat on Sunday that he is negotiating a deal to sell the home to Seminole Boosters, Inc.
For Hobbs, a lifelong FSU fan and Seminole Boosters member, the possibility of the house continuing its connection to FSU carries special significance.
"I'm optimistic," Hobbs said of the ongoing discussions.
The Democrat has reached out to the Boosters for comment.

Amy Hunt will continue her busy summer as the only athlete running both the women's 100m and 200m at the Diamond League Final in Brussels this weekend.
The young British sprint star – who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games five weeks ago, claimed a record four gold medals at the European Athletics Championships shortly after and has since competed in Diamond League events in Zurich and Lausanne as well as a meeting in Brescia – will face two stacked fields at the King Baudouin Stadium, with Olympic silver medallist Sha'Carri Richardson, World Championship silver medallist Tina Clayton and Commonwealth Games champion Zoe Hobbs headlining the 100m field, and two-time Olympic medallist Julien Alfred the favourite in the 200m.
There are global superstars littered throughout the events as the season-long Diamond League reaches its conclusion, with unbeatable pole vault icon Mondo Duplantis finally having a legitimate rival in the form of Emmanouil Karalis, making for a fascinating Friday night showdown, while Audrey Werro vs the ever-improving Femke Broeders-Bol will be a blockbuster 800m match-up in the penultimate race of the meeting on Saturday evening.
Recent world-record breakers Alison Dos Santos (men's 400m hurdles) and Masai Russell (women's 100m hurdles) will both be in action once more, while the likes of Georgia Hunter Bell in the women's 1500m, Matthew Hudson-Smith in the men's 400m and Ben Pattison in the men's 800m provide further British interest. In addition to the Diamond Trophy, there is an extra incentive for the winners, with automatic qualification for the lucrative World Athletics Ultimate Championship later this month on the line.

There are plenty of challenges that come with opening a season nearly 8,000 miles from home. The San Francisco 49ers, set to fly Wednesday to Melbourne, Australia, ahead of their Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams, are learning them firsthand.
The dizzying list of complications starts with a simple one: "Do you have a passport?"
That's a question general manager John Lynch said he recently asked a potential practice squad player, as his team continues to finalize the group it will bring on a 16-hour flight this week for the Sept. 10 opener.
"There's a lot of little logistics like that that are complicated by this, but we're embracing it," Lynch said ahead of Monday afternoon's practice. "We're having a plan for everything, and we're getting it done."
A day after slicing its roster to 53, San Francisco made a flurry of additional moves. It placed defensive back Nate Hobbs and linebacker Nick Martin on injured reserve, re-signed punter Corliss Waitman and safety Ashtyn Davis one day after releasing them and added 13 of the allotted 17 players to its practice squad. Those were all calls that needed to be made faster than normal because of the impending trip.

Week 0 has arrived, meaning Tennessee hits the field in just one week. The Volunteers will kickoff the Faizon Brandon era against Furman in a tune up game before things start to get real in two weeks down in Atlanta. Tennessee is a sleeper team according to most, taking a backseat to teams like Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss.
Can the Volunteers force their way into the SEC picture and perhaps make a run at the College Football Playoff? If that's in the cards, they'll have to find answers to these four questions.
The 5-star freshman ran away with the job in fall camp, now it's time to see just how good he can be right off the bat. There's no doubt about his long-term upside under Josh Heupel, but what about the right now? Brandon was praised for making plays down the field in scrimmages, and his athleticism will bring a new element to the RPO and maybe even option game.
It's going to come down to the little things though. The right checks, the right reads, getting through those reads quickly enough and keeping the offensive tempo when Heupel wants to operate with pace. Brandon is sure to make some freshman mistakes, that just comes with the territory. Can he make enough big plays down the field to keep defenses honest and the focus off of DeSean Bishop and the ground game? That's the key to me.
Tennessee's defensive line room has completely transformed in the past couple of seasons after having a bunch of veterans exit the program. It's going to be a new look for Garner's group in 2026, with no more Eason, Moi, Bailey or Josephs to lean on. The torch is being passed to guys like Xavier Gilliam, Nathan Robinson, Tyree Weathersby, Isaiah Campbell, Ethan Utley and several more. Veteran Daevin Hobbs is expected to lead the group and needs to take a big jump.

Teenager Henry Hobbs avoided involvement in a serious crash on the penultimate lap to sprint to victory in the men's 10km scratch race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 19-year-old had already claimed a gold as part of the men's 4000m pursuit team earlier in the week before following that up with a bronze medal in the elimination race on Friday.
Hobbs, whose brother Noah is a professional cyclist edged, out Australia's Thomas Cornish and England team-mate Ethan Vernon to make it three medals from his games debut.
A crash just before the start of the final lap threatened to disrupt the race with a number of riders requiring medical attention and the remaining athletes having to avoid the debris.
"I didn't feel too good in the morning so I thought if it was a sprint it would be great for me as it only needed one effort," Hobbs told TNT Sports.

England's teenage cyclist Henry Hobbs claimed his first senior individual medal by winning Commonwealth Games bronze in the men's elimination race - just one day after a dramatic gold in the 4,000m team pursuit.
Fresh from the exploits of Thursday evening, the 19-year-old from Essex enjoyed yet more success in his first appearance at a major competition.
Hobbs managed to hold off New Zealand's Thomas ***** ton to finish third behind Scottish silver medallist Mark Stewart and Australian winner Blake Agnoletto.
His compatriot Harry Ledingham-Horn also picked up his first senior individual medal with bronze in the men's keirin.
The 22-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent finished 0.243 seconds behind Malaysian winner Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and 0.134 off silver medallist Leigh Hoffman of Australia.

LIV Golf Michigan, the league's $40 million team championship, is set to be officially canceled after the status of the 2026 season finale had come under serious doubt last week, sources tell Front Office Sports.
An official announcement on the cancellation is expected on Wednesday, according to golf media personality Tom Hobbs, who runs the Flushing It social accounts, which first reported the news.
LIV Michigan had been scheduled for Aug. 27-30 in suburban Detroit at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort, which is owned by the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation. Spokespeople for LIV Golf, Saint John's Resort, and the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation have yet to respond to a request for comment from FOS.
As of early Tuesday afternoon, there had not been any internal announcement or memo to players about the cancelation, one source told FOS. But the news does not come as a surprise to anyone inside or around LIV.
The team championship was one of two events FOS sources had pegged last month as being at the most risk of being canceled as a sentiment grew among those in and around LIV that the funding from the Saudi PIF—which has announced it would stop funding LIV after this season—could dry up even earlier than expected. The other event at most risk, per sources, was LIV's regular-season finale in Indianapolis Aug. 20-23, but that is currently scheduled to still take place.

I feel like I’ve spent most of the offseason complaining about the way people have talked about the Packers’ offseason. Most NFL media seems to be fixated on the idea that the Packers had a bad offseason because they lost some players they weren’t going to use anyway, disregarding the fact that no Packers fan is sitting around shedding tears for Nate Hobbs or wondering how they’ll possibly get by without the lackadaisical services of Rashan Gary.
That’s the hazard of working as a national writer, though. There just isn’t enough time to understand the entire league. There are too many teams and too many players and too many coaches to have a good understanding of what everybody’s up to, and as a result, most national-level ***** ysis happens on the surface, at best — and often it’s not the best. The national take artists seem to often be making an attempt to one-up each other, and the ***** ysis suffers as a result.
The best offseason ***** ysis happens at the local level. That is, if you’ve got the writers who take the initiative to take a comprehensive look at what’s happened over the past few months. And fortunately, the Packers have a decent enough crop of beat writers to get the job done. I’ve been critical of the Packers’ beat in the past, but there are some gems out there, too, and I think our first link today is one of the best pieces about the Packers that I’ve read in a while.
Bill Huber takes an interesting approach to the offseason, looking at the winners and losers within the context of the Packers themselves. There’s no comparison to the league as a whole, or even the NFC North. It’s just a question of who won and lost the offseason relative to the rest of the team. And that’s the best way, I think, to look at the team, because it’s the closest to the way the Packers are going to look at themselves. The Packers aren’t evaluating their roster relative to the rest of the league. They’re going to look at every position relative to itself. Are the cornerbacks the best they can be? What about the edge rushers? The offensive line?
These are the questions that matter most, and when training camp kicks off, it’ll be what the Packers are trying to solve.

The San Francisco 49ers are expecting big things from Mike Evans this season. He’ll be Brock Purdy’s go-to target and open things up for everyone else on offense. He should allow George Kittle to take his time returning from an Achilles injury, as well as make life easier on Ricky Pearsall. That’s expected.
Several other free agents on the roster could make meaningful contributions. But to what degree?
Will Christian Kirk stay healthy enough to add a speed dimension on offense?
Will Vederian Lowe save the day at tackle if Trent Williams misses time? Robert Jones and Bret Toth joined the roster to help the interior offensive line depth. They also have a chance to earn a starting spot at left guard.
It doesn’t feel right to list Dre Greenlaw as an underrated addition. It feels like he never left. However, a couple of members in the secondary could see time on the field if there are any injuries. Both Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs have plenty of experience.

San Francisco enters 2026 with one of the more well-rounded rosters in the NFL, according to Sharp Football ****** ysis, ... and one glaring exception.
The 49ers rank in the top 10 at four of the five positional groups Warren Sharp graded this offseason: No. 6 at receivers and tight ends, No. 7 at offensive line, No. 8 at defensive front seven and No. 9 at quarterback. The fifth, the secondary, checked in at 26th, by far the lowest mark on the team and the clearest weakness on an otherwise loaded roster.
Sharp didn't soften the ****** sment.
San Francisco returns every starter from last year, when they intercepted just 6 passes all season, fourth-worst in the NFL.
The core trio of Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green and Upton Stout from last year's group is back, along with veteran additions Nate Hobbs and Jack Jones. This could be a problem for the 49ers' defense, although they're now led by defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, a former long-time defensive backs coach himself.

Zoe Backstedt retained her British national elite women's time trial **** le, topping an all-Welsh podium at the 2026 championships in Lampeter.
The 21-year-old, who last week won a stage of Tour de Suisse Femmes, covered the 15.9 mile (25.6km) Ceredigion course in 32 minutes and 45 seconds.
World track cycling champion Anna Morris, 31, was runner-up 22 seconds back, with Backstedt's 24-year-old sister Elynor third, 1min 05sec behind the winning time.
Earlier in the day, Ben Wiggins took the Under-23 men's time trial **** le, with Henry Hobbs second and Finlay Tarling - another Welsh rider on home territory - third.
Wiggins' winning time was 29min 02sec, with Hobbs 1min 19sec slower and Tarling a further three seconds behind.

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t have the best results from their safety room last offseason, as they rotated between Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha, and rookie Marques Sigle.
Many expected a step up from the young group, but the 49ers had inconsistent results in the secondary that led to questions this offseason. A part of that could’ve been from the lack of pass rush, which San Francisco is hoping for, as they didn’t make many major changes in the backend this offseason.
But, there were a few smaller signings, including the ones of Nate Hobbs (one year, $3.5 million deal), Ashtyn Davis (one year, $1.8 million), and Jack Jones (1 year, $1.2 million).
Hobbs seems likely to make the roster, as $3.11 million of the $3.5 million he’s receiving is fully guaranteed at signing. Davis and Jones, on the other hand, don’t have much guaranteed money on their smaller deals, so a spot isn’t guaranteed for them this offseason.
Still, that didn’t keep Donte Whitner from believing that Davis could push Ji’Ayir Brown for his starting job this offseason.
