NEW YORK, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Kay Granger, a Texas Republican who was the first woman from her party ‌to chair the U.S. House of Representatives' powerful Appropriations ‌Committee, has died, her son J.D. Granger confirmed to Reuters on Sunday. She was 83.
No cause of death was given. Kay Granger in 2024 said she was battling "unforeseen health challenges."
Granger represented her Texas district in Congress from 1997 to 2025. In 2023, Granger announced ‌she would not seek ⁠re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
In her final term as a lawmaker, Granger chaired the ⁠House Appropriations Committee for more than a year, putting her in charge of spending legislation and making her one of the most influential members of Congress.
House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Granger as a ‌trailblazer. "Throughout her career, she broke barriers for women in public service," Johnson said, noting that she was the first female mayor of Fort Worth and the first Republican woman elected to represent Texas in the U.S. House.

ZANESVILLE – Efforts to bring the Gus Macker basketball tournament back to Zanesville took a major step forward with the selection of a host site at Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College and the YMCA of Zanesville, as community partners, sponsors and organizers work toward the event's return in July 2027.
Next, the Gus Macker executive committee will have a 30- to 40-minute site walkthrough in August with facility, campus and concession representatives to review the venue layouts and complete the proposed site plan. That'll include mapping out the areas for the hoops, parking, overflow, and food vendors, added Dominique Proctor, the Gus Macker Zanesville committee's executive chair.
Then, the committee can start working on a final contract with the tournament's headquarters. Discussions are expected to start after Labor Day.

The so-called "Protect College Sports Act" had stalled, thanks in large part to lingering objections from the Big Ten and the SEC. On Friday, it all changed.
Via Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, the Big Ten and SEC reached an agreement with lawmakers regarding the bill that would ostensibly restore some order to the chaos flowing from decades of rampant antitrust violations. While also picking the pockets of those who play the most profitable sports.
President Trump got directly involved in the effort to smooth out the lingering issues. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) told Dellenger that a vote of the full Senate is expected next week. With a one-month recess looming, the Senate was running out of time to get something done before the midterm elections in November.
The bill, if passed by the Senate, would still need to be passed by the House of Representatives. If passed, it would give the NCAA and the various conferences a limited antitrust exemption, allowing the one-time transfer rule to be implemented and create a stricter revenue-sharing cap.
It would also prevent coaches from leaving their teams before a season ends — a/k/a "the Lane Kiffin Rule."

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have not been shy about their efforts to add starting pitching in the lead-up to the trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET Monday. The Sox are casting a wide net in their search for playoff-caliber rotation reinforcements, with the hope of getting back to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
The White Sox have been scouring the market in recent days, and sources tell Yahoo Sports that Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber and Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers are two names on Chicago's radar. Bieber is a familiar face to the White Sox, as he faced them for seven seasons while a member of the Cleveland Guardians. This year, the Blue Jays' right-hander is 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA in seven starts.
Rogers, who is 6-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 20 starts this season, has come on strong over the past month and a half. The Orioles' southpaw has a 1.85 ERA with 41 strikeouts across his past seven starts. Both Bieber and Rogers will become free agents at the end of the 2026 season.
Chicago, like other upstart contenders around the sport, would love to add controllable starting pitching to their roster if they can. But the Sox also aren't afraid to go the rental route, depending on what the market presents over the next few days. Yahoo Sports reported on Monday that the White Sox were showing interest in starting pitchers who fit the window of the team's young core, with Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers high on their list.

Rutgers offensive lineman Kwabena Asamoah was one of the three player representatives that the Scarlet Knights sent to Big Ten media days to speak on behalf of the program. Asamoah's line of questioning was a little bit different, with his first major question revolving around the leadership he will bring to the Rutgers offensive line room this season.

"For me, it puts me in a position to, like you said, be a leader. That's an honor to me personally. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Representatives from the Trail Blazers met with Portland city councilors on Thursday to discuss a new lease and the commitment of public funds to renovate the aging Moda Center.
The public work session comes amid the contentious negotiations over the $600 million renovation project, part of striking a long-term lease agreement with the Blazers. A current bridge lease expires in 2030.
The state has already pledged $365 million toward the deal, provided Portland contributes $120 million and Multnomah County also provides funds.
New Blazers owner Tom Dundon has previously said in interviews that he would commit to a 20-year lease that would keep the team in Portland if the state, city and county agree to fund the renovation of the Moda Center, the oldest arena in the NBA that hasn't been upgraded.

NEW DELHI: The decision to name 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as East Zone vice-captain for the upcoming Duleep Trophy has raised eyebrows across the cricketing world, but the selectors believe they are investing in the future of Indian cricket.

With experienced wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan appointed captain, Sooryavanshi's elevation as deputy is not being viewed as an immediate leadership burden but as an opportunity to accelerate his development as a cricketer.

One member of the East Zone selection committee explained the thinking behind the move, saying the teenager was not being handed the captaincy but was being prepared for greater responsibilities in the future.

"He has not been made the captain. He has only been made the vice-captain. The captain is Ishan Kishan. Besides, Ishan is a wicketkeeper, so he will be actively involved throughout the day. It is not as though Vaibhav will be captaining the team all day. As he grows, he is maturing day by day. Giving him more responsibility will help him mature even further," former Odisha Ranji player and selector Pravanjan Mullick told Cricbuzz.
Mullick revealed that the selectors' decision was based on Sooryavanshi's rapid rise and his ability to handle responsibility despite his age.

"This is a great opportunity for him to take on the responsibility of being vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. He wants to do well for the country, and we believe giving young players responsibility is important. Who knows? We are keeping our fingers crossed that one day he could even become India's captain. Saltburn Cricket Club have suspended a player, humorously called "Clicky Ponting", after he was accused of cheating during a local league match by clicking his fingers to make it sound like the batter had edged the ball.

The incident, which happened during Saltburn's second XI win over Norton, went viral on social media after video footage appeared to show the fielder making the sound just before the wicketkeeper completed the catch.

The umpire gave the batter out, sparking widespread criticism online.
Responding to the controversy, Saltburn Cricket Club, an English outfit, said they were taking the allegations seriously and had suspended the player while an investigation is underway.

In a statement, the club said, "We are treating this allegation with the utmost seriousness and, as a family-centric club, we are fully cooperating with the NYS League's investigation."
The statement added, "The player at the centre of the complaint has been suspended and will not play again for the club this season or in the foreseeable future, pending the outcome of this investigation."

Saltburn have also withdrawn from their second-team cup match against Marton as the investigation continues. Club officials have already spoken with league representatives and said the situation has been difficult for everyone involved.

They added, "This has been a very distressing and stressful experience for all those concerned, and we would ask that this reality is borne in mind and that personal boundaries are respected, as we are an amateur club entirely run by volunteers."

The viral clip has now been viewed more than 7.5 million times on X, with several well-known figures criticising the alleged act.

Representatives for West, who legally changed his name to Ye, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to TMZ.
The filing appears to bring an end to one of the most closely watched civil cases involving the rapper. Attorneys for both sides told Judge Nicholas F. Daum on June 29 that they had settled in principle following a mediation session held earlier that month, according to Complex, which reviewed the court record. An upcoming hearing was taken off the calendar to give the parties time to finalize the deal, with the case scheduled to return to court in late September if further proceedings were needed.
Pisciotta, who worked as West's personal ***** istant from 2021 to 2022, first sued in 2024, alleging ***** ual harassment, breach of contract and wrongful termination. She said she was promoted to chief of staff of West's companies at an annual salary of $4 million before she was fired in October 2022, and that she never received a $3 million severance payment she had been offered, according to Complex.

As part of that doc, 10 women apparently come forward and level claims against Leto (56). The Oscar winner has specifically been accused of ******* ual ******* ault with some of the women also alleging that Leto had ******* with them when they were underage. Now, Leto himself is speaking out in the aftermath of the allegations.
With the release of the doc, the BBC released a statement, saying that it corroborated "a number of the women's accounts with friends and family who were told about the encounters with Leto at the time." The media organization also said it had obtained items such as photos and messages that "support the women's accounts." Leto's representatives shared a statement with Variety, with which the actor denied the claims against him:

Florian Plettenberg reports that Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima's move to Palace has collapsed. The two sides failed to reach an agreement on the final contractual details despite discussing a total package worth as much as €30 million. Matsima will be remaining in the Bundesliga for now.
The proposed deal reportedly collapsed because Augsburg and Palace remained apart on the structure of the payments and performance-related bonuses. Matsima and his representatives have already been informed that the move will not proceed.
The 24-year-old will now return to first-team duties and travel with Augsburg to their training camp on Saturday. Sky notes that Matsima behaved professionally throughout the negotiations.
