The San Francisco 49ers' injury luck couldn't have been worse coming into the season. It's a team that consistently has been among the worst in the NFL in adjusted games lost. Unfortunately, that trend is continuing in 2026.
De'Zhaun Stribling left the game early on, but shortly returned. When he did come back, Stribling was carted off the field. It was a non-contact injury in which Stribling couldn't put any pressure on his left leg. The 49ers immediately ruled him out, which is never a good sign.
Stribling played 21 snaps before he left with an injury. The 49ers relied on Jacob Cowing and Deebo Samuel in Stribling's absence. They'll likely use Demarcus Robinson more moving forward.
A wide receiver core that looked promising a month ago is now without two of its top three targets with Stribling's injury and Ricky Pearsall out for the season.
Tight end Jake Tonges was also carted off with a lower leg injury. He's questionable to return, but this does not seem like somebody who is coming back:

The San Francisco 49ers put forth a concerted effort to upgrade their wide receiver room this offseason because it lacked talent last year, and they were set to lose Jauan Jennings, who eventually signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
With that knowledge, San Francisco brought in Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and Deebo Samuel in free agency and took De'Zhaun Stribling in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. San Francisco 49ers defensive end Keion White has opened up about the difficult recovery from a gunshot wound to his right ankle.
White was shot during an altercation at a San Francisco nightclub in the early hours after NFL Super Bowl 60. The injury fractured his talus bone and required surgery, with doctors inserting two screws into his ankle.
"It's different because it's trauma instead of just, like, breaking an ankle with a sports-related injury," White said, via The Athletic. "When you hurt yourself in football, there's a protocol for **** near everything."
Then he said, "Football players don't just get shot every day," while mentioning, "I mean, I guess they do on this team," referring to the incident involving Ricky Pearsall.

The San Francisco 49ers remain a top-10 team, but dropped a spot in ESPN's newest power rankings following the 2026 preseason. The 49ers went from No. 8 to No. 9 after being overtaken by the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers have once again been hit hard with injuries before the season even starts. Ricky Pearsall is already out for the year, George Kittle is still working his way back from an Achilles injury, and the receiver room has taken additional hits with ailments to veterans expected to anchor the offense like Mike Evans. That kind of attrition at the skill positions is a real concern heading into Week 1, even if some of the team's top players are looking healthier at this point in the summer.
Beyond the injury list, there's also lingering uncertainty up front. San Francisco's offensive line still has soft spots, especially at left guard, that could be exposed against the more physical fronts in the division. The preseason finale for the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers is here, and both teams have made headlines for drastically different things.
The Raiders secured the No. 1 overall pick and drafted quarterback Fernando Mendoza. In limited action, the rookie has at times looked the part, and also has shown there's still a ways to go. Defensive tackle Gracen Halton (ankle) and right guard Dominick Puni (concussion) were held out of practice, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. Puni's absence is a particular concern for an offensive line that has already been shuffling personnel through the opening weeks of camp, with Connor Colby working into the mix at left guard. Losing Puni to the concussion protocol, even temporarily, forces San Francisco to lean further on its depth up front.
Halton's ankle issue adds to a defensive tackle room that's already been thin. The 49ers waived Mikail Kamara with an injury designation earlier in camp after he tore his ACL, and rookie C.J. West has been trying to establish himself in the rotation. That group took another hit Wednesday when West and edge rusher ***** us Leo were both shaken up and left practice early, per the same report. De'Zhaun Stribling caught seven passes for 63 yards in one half against Tennessee on Thursday night, most of it against a starting-caliber defense. PFN's Jacob Infante had already made the call onFootball Debate Club, and his case had less to do with the rookie than with the men standing in front of him.
"He was a little bit of a reach, people thought, when they took him with the first pick in the second round, but he's been really, really good in training camp," Infante said. "And if you look at that 49ers wide receiver room, there's a serious opportunity for him to make plays."
That room has been gutted. Ricky Pearsall is on injured reserve after season-ending PCL surgery. Christian Kirk has been nursing a calf strain since camp opened. The depth in the San Francisco 49ers receiving corps was tested almost immediately when starting wide receiver Ricky Pearsall went down with an injury that required season-ending surgery and veteran WR Christian Kirk was sidelined by a calf issue. According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Kittle is making "terrific progress" in his recovery from a torn Achilles and "there's a high level of confidence at this point" that he'll be able to play in the opener against the Rams.

Receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. is back in San Francisco, and back in the number he wore from 2019 through 2023: 19.
Coach Kyle Shanahan explained on Saturday that any contract-driven awkwardness from years past is a non-issue now.
"Deebo's always been one of the closest guys we've been to, just relationship-wise," Shanahan told reporters. "When Deebo went through his contract negotiations, [I'll] try not to put words in his mouth, but I think he thought it'd be advantageous to make it look like there was a little bit of a battle. Sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn't. . . .
"Those OTAs [in 2022], I was at Deebo's house on the eighth OTA day, and I was talking about how all that was just BS. He came to minicamp. We had a great summer together. I think he signed the first day back at training camp. We got over that in OTAs. That was just stuff from the negotiating periods back in April and stuff. There were stuff, definitely, that made me like, 'What the ******* is going on?' We're not around Deebo. Then we see him in OTAs and we got to talk man-to-man and it was fine as soon as we got with each other."

The Panthers saw young pass rusher Nic Scourton suffer a torn ACL and rookie receiver Chris Brazzell II also suffer a season-ending knee injury. The Falcons lost last year's first-round draft pick, edge rusher Jalon Walker, to a torn ACL. Their NFC South rival, the Saints, lost a key defensive piece when tackle Bryan Bresee tore his ACL. There have been many other injuries, significant and minor. And there's still more than a month to go before the season starts.

Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr is the most recent **** yst to make a prediction, writing that the 49ers finish third in the NFC West at 10-7 in his annual 272-game season projection, behind both the Rams (13-4) and Seahawks (11-6). Orr still has San Francisco reaching the postseason as the NFC's No. 7 seed.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back former All-Pro Deebo Samuel for a second stint after starting receiver Ricky Pearsall got sidelined by a knee injury.
A person familiar with the deal said Samuel agreed on Thursday to return to the 49ers on a one-year contract worth up to $7 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been announced.
NFL Network first reported the agreement.
Samuel spent his first six seasons with the 49ers after being drafted in the second round in 2019, helping the team reach the Super Bowl twice and earning All-Pro honors in 2021 when he had 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns.
Samuel was traded to Washington in 2025 for a fifth-round draft pick and had 72 catches for 727 yards and five TDs for the Commanders last season. He became a free agent in March and now will join the Niners to provide reinforcement with Pearsall out.

Deebo needs no introduction. He spent the entireity of his career in the Bay Area before a one-year stint with the Commanders last year. Samuel saw more targets last season than he had since 2021. He finished the season with 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns.
Most of Deebo's targets came near the line of scrimmage. His average air yards per target was the lowest since 2022, at 5.3. Of those 99 targets, 67 came under 10 yards.
Washington used Samuel primarily as a slot receiver. He ran 260 routes in the slot, compared to 141 out wide. It's worth noting that Samuel also ran 15 routes from the backfield. If the 49ers are looking for somebody to take some of the workload off Christian McCaffrey with Jordan James sidelined, who better than the player who we coined the term "wideback" for?
We're projecting here, but Samuel would likely play in the slot while Stribling gets familiar with "Z." That is, unless Demarcus Robinson or Christian Kirk prove that they can contribute as outside receivers in this offense.

Samuel, one of the more high-profile free agents on the market, has long been linked with a return to his old team, the San Francisco 49ers, and the speculation only ramped up after Ricky Pearsall's training camp was interrupted by a flare-up of his posterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday.
During Wednesday's segment of the "Speakeasy" podcast, former Pro Bowler T. J. Houshmandzadeh called on the 49ers to re-sign Samuel, while also reserving a few choice words of caution when it comes to Pearsall.
"Samuel should be on his way. I said this last week," T. J. Houshmandzadeh said.
"I can't count on Ricky Pearsall, that's what I said. I can count on, and I know I can rely on Deebo Samuel. And then this comes out. When you're a receiver and you start having these lower body injuries this early in training camp, first, second day, we're gonna have to monitor this the rest of the season.
