Every sport has its unwritten rules, and one of the most universal is simple: Don't give your opponent "bulletin-board material." Don't say something that can be printed out, slapped on a wall, and pointed to by a coach looking for a little extra motivation. Don't give the other team a reason to make the game personal.
In the end, almost anything can be twisted into locker-room material in one way or another. When Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Zyon McCollum was asked how he felt about playing against one of the most talented offenses in the league in Week 1, he had plenty of ways he could have answered.
And he made a decision.
"We're going to have opportunities, guaranteed opportunities," he said when asked about his Week 1 opponents. "I mean, they want to get their season started off right. They want to get in rhythm early, so the ball is guaranteed to go in the air. And a ball in the air belongs to us. You know, that's the mentality that we have. That's what we're going into the game thinking. We know we're going to get tested early, so it's an incredible opportunity for us.
"There will be no better feeling than when we take away three, four interceptions."

Deuce McBride realized ***** ody could stop the Knicks during the series against the Hawks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
During the 2026 Playoffs, the New York Knicks went on a magical run all the way to winning the championship. It all started with the first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks, when they were tested the most. However, it seems that the Knicks players treated that series as a big lesson.
As an important rotation player, Miles "Deuce" McBride knows how much momentum matters for his team. Considering that the Knicks struggled early on during the series against the Hawks, turning that around was a big part of their success.
CJ McCollum was playing at a high level during the first-round series against the Knicks, which was enough for him to become the biggest opponent for the fans. Fortunately for the Knicks, they managed to swing the momentum in their favor with the 114-98 win in Game 4.
They never turned back, as they won 126-97 in Game 5 and finished the series off with a 140-89 victory in Game 6. After that win, they only lost one more game, which was during the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. It was a magical run that is on par with some of the best teams of all time.

Céline Dion is returning to the stage this month in Nanterre, France, where she will kick off a five-week residency that will mark her first set of live shows in six years. And to coincide with her major comeback, the pop superstar has been on quite a streak of luxury looks.
Harper's Bazaar's September 2026 cover star touched down in Paris late last week, where she arrived to her hotel in head-to-to Alaïa: a fit consisting of a double-breasted, belted trench paired with suede cutout boots and mask-style sunglasses. Now, only days later, the "My Heart Will Go On" singer has turned heads again, this time in an outfit that was fresh off the runway.

As Dion was seen exiting her hotel, Le Royal Monceau, yesterday afternoon, she made a striking statement in an all-black ensemble pulled from the Loewe Fall/Winter 2026 ready-to-wear collection by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent much of the offseason searching for more depth at cornerback, and they found it by bringing back a familiar face. Former Buccaneers cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting is returning to Tampa Bay on the practice squad, with an opportunity to work his way onto the 53-man roster. The reunion comes after the Arizona Cardinals released the 29-year-old, who missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from a torn ACL.
For Tampa Bay, the move is about more than simply adding another body to the secondary. Zyon McCollum and Jacob Parrish enter the season as the projected starters on the outside, while Benjamin Morrison, Ayden Garnes and rookie Keionte Scott round out a young cornerback room. The Buccaneers kept only five corners on their initial 53man roster, making experienced depth one of the obvious areas that still needed to be addressed. Murphy-Bunting has 65 career starts and already knows Todd Bowles' defense from his first four seasons in Tampa Bay. He was also at his best during the Buccaneers' 2020 Super Bowl run, recording an interception in each of Tampa Bay's first three playoff games. His versatility could be just as important. Murphy-Bunting has experience playing both outside and in the slot, giving Bowles another option if injuries hit or one of Tampa Bay's younger corners struggles.
Scott has an opportunity to establish himself in the slot, while Morrison and Garnes are still trying to carve out consistent roles. There is still some uncertainty surrounding what Murphy-Bunting can provide after missing an entire season with a significant knee injury. At 29, Tampa Bay isn't necessarily getting the same player who helped the franchise win Super Bowl LV, but this time they don't need him to be. If Murphy-Bunting proves he is healthy, the Buccaneers now have an experienced corner who can step into multiple roles without having to learn Bowles' defense from scratch. For a secondary relying heavily on young players its insurance and it could make the competition at cornerback much more interesting as the regular season begins.

Multiple comedy festivals are reportedly distancing themselves from Reggie Watts following disturbing allegations into his behaviour.
The 2026 lineups for Greenbelt Festival, Shambala Festival and Electric Picnic no longer display his name. Watts had been scheduled to perform at all three events over the weekend of 27 to 30 August.
In addition, the weekly Comedy Bang! Bang! Podcast, hosted by Scott Aukerman, has seemingly dropped its Watts-composed theme song, despite it serving as the intro music since 2011, Rolling Stone reports.
The outlet reported last week that the American comedian, musician and actor had displayed allegedly toxic, controlling and at times abusive behaviour towards his ex-girlfriend Katherine McCollough.
McCollough died by suicide this spring.
The musical comedian faced lengthy accusations from numerous people interviewed by Rolling Stone of him pressuring his former partner into using dangerous substances such as ketamine throughout their romance, which lasted from around May 2024 to October 2025.

The Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast and multiple festivals appear to be distancing themselves from Reggie Watts following a disturbing Rolling Stone report that detailed his allegedly toxic, controlling and at times abusive behavior toward ex-girlfriend Katherine McCollough, who died by suicide this spring after developing an addiction to drugs over the course of their relationship.
The outlet reported Monday (Aug. 24) — four days after the initial investigation was published — that the Watts-composed Comedy Bang! Bang! theme song had been notably absent from the latest episode, despite serving as the intro music since 2011. Instead, Rolling Stone writes that the installment was preceded by "a generic British woman's voice" that simply stated the episode's number.

Reggie Watts' "Comedy Bang Bang" theme song was cut from Monday's episode of the popular podcast following a Rolling Stone report that alleged the comedian and musician has exhibited "reckless and selfish" behavior regarding drugs in his past relationships.
The story, which was published on Thursday, alleges that Watts' late ex-girlfriend, Katherine McCollough, developed a ketamine addiction while dating him (Watts has been a longtime advocate for the drug). Their relationship ended in October 2025 after McCollough experienced a drug-induced manic episode that summer, and in March of this year, McCollough traveled to Peru to take her own life. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Watts' attorney Andrew Brettler called the claims "dangerously false" and said it was a "preconceived narrative" to suggest that he was responsible for her suicide.
Watts — known for starring in the TV version of "Comedy Bang Bang" from 2012 to 2016 before becoming the bandleader for James Corden's "Late Late Show" — penned the theme song for the Scott Aukerman-hosted podcast, which began airing as a radio show in 2009. The song was played before last week's episode on Aug. 17, but is not present in Monday's installment featuring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of "Portlandia" fame.
Representatives for Watts, "Comedy Bang Bang" and Aukerman did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.
In addition to the allegations surrounding McCollough, the Rolling Stone report contains claims from five women who previously dated Watts and allege a pattern of "reckless and selfish" behavior regarding drugs in their relationships. Two women alleged that their relationships with Watts were "emotionally and psychologically abusive."

The 6-7, 215-pound wing, Iowa Hawkeyes wing Tavion Banks, received an extra year of college eligibility through the state of Colorado's injunction against the NCAA. After the eligibility ruling, Banks told 247 Sports that the Gonzaga Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Oklahoma Sooners are his four choices for his last college basketball campaign. A return to Iowa City, Iowa, is not being considered.
Banks averaged 10.2 points on 52.0 field goal percentage/44.2 three-point percentage/79.2 free throw percentage, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 37 games played, including 35 starts, for Iowa this past season.
Before joining the Hawkeyes, the Kansas City, Missouri, native began his career on the junior college level at Northwest Florida State College for his first two seasons. Banks then transferred to the Drake Bulldogs under coach Ben McCollum in 2024-25 and followed him to Iowa in 2025-26.
Gonzaga has one of their 15 roster spots available at the moment, but is also awaiting the NCAA to grant approval of 6-3 point guard Nathan De Sousa from France's Cholet Basket and 6-10 power forward/center Izan Almansa from Spain's Real Madrid.

For the last few years, we've asked the same question about two coaches: why is no one going after Northwest Missouri State's Ben McCollum and UConn ****** istant Luke Murray?
Drake finally took a gamble on D-II coach McCollum, and it paid off quickly with a 31-4 record. His hometown school, Iowa, came calling after his one season with the Bulldogs, and he took the Big Ten job. Last year, he had a 24-13 record, and made the Elite Eight, which Iowa hadn't done since 1987.
And now, Boston College has hired Murray.
This is Murray's first head-coaching position, but he's already done something kind of amazing: he's no longer known just as Bill Murray's kid.

Sam Yip: Trey Murphy on why he decided to take on a leadership role with TheNBPA: I had two great vets that were very instrumental in my basketball career. And they were on the executive board, CJ [McCollum] being the former president. And they were just like, you fit what we would need. For a while, I was just like, I don't think I'm ready for that. I want to make the main thing the main thing, worry about basketball, worry about getting a good foundation. And Garrett [Temple], it was two people that were trying to nominate me, and I just felt like I was called to do it, so it was my job to answer the call. I think the thing is I'm able to talk to people. I voice my opinions very well, and I look at things very differently than a lot of players. Just mainly because I didn't know for sure I was going to be in the NBA growing up. I've had every role. Like I've been the guy that didn't play my rookie year. I've been the guy that just came off the bench. Then the guy has just been a starter, and now I've got to point where I'm one of the better players on the team. So I just have different perspectives on different things.

Whenever you are a successful general manager in the NFL, that means your roster management is among the best. Within that is free agency, trades, and, of course, the NFL Draft. For the Bucs under the leadership of Jason Licht, that last part has not always been a bright spot in their process.
However, in recent years, the draft has been very kind to the Bucs. They have been able to draft foundational pieces such as Antoine Winfield Jr., Chris Godwin, Tristan Wirfs, Luke Goedeke, and Zyon McCollum. With drafting well comes the need to be able to pay all of those players.
That was the topic of conversation on the latest episode of Inside Football. Host and former general manager of the Arizona Cardinals, Steve Keim, was on with Licht, and he discussed how hard it is to draft well and keep everyone.
"The negative side of having some great drafts is you can't pay everybody. . .Keeping the gang together is probably my biggest stresser."
The Bucs have several notable contracts expiring this upcoming season, the biggest being quarterback Baker Mayfield. But of all those players we mentioned above, they have all been extended over the past couple of seasons.

After being granted a fifth year of NCAA eligibility by a recent court ruling, Tavion Banks announced he would play elsewhere next season, but also took time to thank the loyal and passionate Iowa basketball fans.
The court decision in question came from Judge Charlotte Sweeney of the U.S. District Court of Colorado, who granted a preliminary injunction on Friday declaring all class of 2022 athletes who had exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring eligible for a fifth season this upcoming school year.
Despite the decision to continue his collegiate career outside of a Hawkeyes uniform, Banks expressed utmost gratitude towards the fans' unwavering support and passion that made Iowa such a special place to him.
"And to the best fan base in the country-thank you for embracing me, supporting me through every high and low, and showing unconditional love from day one. Your energy and passion made every game special, and I'll never forget what it felt like to wear Iowa across my chest. Much love to you all. Thank you for everything. Forever gratefully," Banks wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday.
After following head coach Ben McCollum, along with five other players, from Drake to Iowa last season, the Kansas City, Missouri, native averaged 10.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game on 52% field goal shooting, 44.2% 3-point accuracy, and 79.2% shooting from the free-throw line in 35 starts across 37 games.

Ben McCollum has knocked high school recruiting out of the park since arriving in Iowa City.
On a short turnaround, he put together a solid 2025 class. He upped the ante this past offseason, landing a pair of highly-touted players in Ethan Harris and Jaidyn ****** . And he’s already landed a big-time commitment from 2027 four-star forward Keller Daughtery.
While there’s still work to do on the 2027 class, McCollum is already starting to look into the 2028 crop. He and the Hawkeyes officially offered 2028 five-star center Bentley Lusakueno on Wednesday. Lusakueno took to social media to announce the offer.
Lusakueno is from College Park, Georgia, and Woodward Academy High School. The 6-foot-10 center is currently ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the 2028 class, according to 247Sports. He already holds nine Division I offers, with Florida State, Georgia, Miami, and Oregon all joining Iowa in the mix.
He's already garnered a lot of attention from USA Basketball as well. Lusakueno was a member of the 2025 USA Men’s U16 National Team and was recently named a finalist for the 2026 USA Men's U17 National Team. With two years of high school ball remaining, he's only going to rise in the recruiting rankings. Iowa getting in on him early could be the difference late in the process.

NBA free agents 2026: Ranking top 20 players in free agency, from LeBron James to Norman Powell originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
LeBron James leads a 2026 free agency class that doesn't have many huge names in it. Due to the way the league has restructured its salary cap rules and dates, the days of LeBron and Chris Bosh unexpectedly teaming up in Miami are long gone. Nowadays, those types of moves are made via trade rather than free agency.
LeBron might switch teams again, and that would certainly be big news. But aside from him, this free agent class is more about adding role players than All-Stars.
Many other top free agents like James Harden, Austin Reaves, Coby White, CJ McCollum, or others have either already re-signed with their current franchises or are widely expected to opt into a guaranteed deal for next season.
Those players won't make my top 20 free agents list. Instead, these are the most realisticly gettable candidates for teams like the Lakers, Bulls, Nets, and Pistons that will have some cap ***** e to work with, or other teams willing to make sign-and-trade deals.

The New York Knicks had a historic championship run this past season. Atlanta’s CJ McCollum stood as one of the biggest threats to that ***** le.
This past week, McCollum agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension with Atlanta that includes a trade kicker, ensuring he will not enter free agency on June 30. The extension comes less than six months after the Hawks acquired McCollum in a blockbuster midseason trade, showing the organization’s vision for the 2026-27 season.
When the Hawks acquired McCollum in January, the move was widely viewed as a roster-balancing decision as a part of Trae Young’s departure. Yet what followed was something more impactful, as McCollum quickly became a consistent, experienced player that Atlanta lacked.
His scoring, decision-making, and veteran playstyle helped guide the Hawks through the second half of the season, ultimately turning them into a legitimate playoff threat. The Atlanta Hawks went 27-14 in the regular season with CJ McCollum in the lineup (including 19-6 when he started). McCollum appeared in 41 regular-season games (25 starts), averaging 18.7 PPG, 4.1 APG, 3.1 RPG, and 1.0 SPG.
The moments that have stuck with the fans, however, came during the playoffs, where McCollum’s biggest contributions came when the lights were the brightest.

The Oklahoma City Thunder landed Iowa star Bennett Stirtz in the first trade of the night on Tuesday.
The Thunder selected Stirtz with the No. 16 overall pick in the NBA Draft on Tuesday, thanks to a late trade they made with the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies briefly got the No. 17 overall pick, but dealt that away to the Detroit Pistons almost immediately to move back to No. 21. That netted them three additional future second round picks. While the full list of picks that the Grizzlies secured is not yet known, the organization ended up gaining five second-round picks to move back just five spots.
Stirtz averaged 19.8 points and 4.4 **** ists per game last season with the Hawkeyes. He transferred into Iowa City from Drake, following head coach Ben McCollum after he made the jump last summer, too. The All-Big Ten guard played nearly 38 minutes per game and helped the Hawkeyes reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987. They ended up falling to Illinois in that round of the tournament.
The move came just days after the Thunder sent Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for two future second-round picks, the first in 2030 and the second in 2032. That trade could end up saving the Thunder more than $60 million. The Thunder also selected Michigan big man Aday Mara at No. 12 overall on Tuesday night. The 7-foot-3 center was the best true big man in the draft class, and could be a possible answer for San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama in the Western Conference. Wembanyama and the Spurs beat the Thunder to reach the NBA Finals earlier this year, ending the Thunders' hopes for back-to-back **** les after their championship in 2025.

Atlanta did something a little surprising Tuesday night in the first round of the NBA Draft.
Many figured the Hawks would go with size and choose 7-foot-3 Aday Mara out of Michigan at No. 8 overall to get a jumbo center in the fold.
Instead, they opted for 6-foot-3 lead guard Kingston Flemings from Houston.
It's not a bad pick, but with CJ McCollum re-signing for next season, it made sense that Atlanta would opt for size to shore up their frontline to complement Jalen Johnson and Jonathan ****** inga.
Flemings, however, is the long-term solution at point guard for this young team, meaning the organization put a larger emphasis on additional playmaking.
