If you've dreamed of retiring early but don't have the financial means to build a massive retirement portfolio, you may be a candidate for the Lean FIRE movement.
Instead of building a bigger nest egg to support an expensive lifestyle, Lean FIRE encourages keeping your spending low so you need less to become financially independent. For those willing to embrace a more frugal lifestyle, that could put early retirement within reach sooner.
Here's a closer look at how Lean FIRE works and whether it's a realistic goal for you.

CNBC reported that Chris Churchman, The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) partner who leads the bank's Marquee digital platform for institutional clients, warned that AI's spread across Wall Street risks eroding the reasoning skills of the next generation of bankers.
Churchman said on Goldman's internal "Exchanges" podcast, "There's a huge danger here that in the era of AI, we outsource our reasoning to these models, and we have cognitive atrophy that stops us being able to reason from first principles ourselves." He compared it to how GPS and search engines eroded navigation skills and said much of banking's knowledge is learned only "by doing." Churchman said the firm has not yet determined how it will manage the transition.
The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) is surfacing this risk proactively, through its own senior AI leadership, rather than being caught off guard by it later. Having the executive who leads Marquee flag the danger publicly signals internal scrutiny that could help Goldman build safeguards into its AI rollout before problems show up in deal execution. It is an advantage over firms deploying AI without asking the same questions.
The near-term efficiency case for AI remains fully intact regardless of the long-term talent question. CNBC itself framed the tradeoff as a "devil's bargain" that could make the industry more profitable today while potentially eroding the talent it needs for tomorrow. It means Goldman still captures AI's productivity benefits now even as it works out the downstream risk.
Marquee itself is a genuine strategic **** et getting AI investment. The platform, through which hedge funds and other large institutional clients access Goldman's market data, research, **** ytics, and execution tools, is being built out with AI features, which positions it as a differentiated offering for Goldman's most valuable client relationships.

When Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) announced its Anthropic partnership in late July, two commitments stood out. Anthropic agreed to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 series graphics processing units (GPUs), with deployment of the first gigawatt set to begin in the first half of 2027. And AMD committed to invest up to $5 billion in the artificial intelligence (AI) company behind the Claude models.
The second commitment is about to get easier to measure. Anthropic plans to publish its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus after the Labor Day holiday on Monday, with a listing as soon as late September or early October, The Information reported late last month.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
What does AMD hold today, then? Not a stake, at least not yet.

No doubt you've seen an "FDIC-insured" or "Member FDIC" sign on the wall of a bank or at the bottom of a bank website homepage. Almost all banks, including online banks, are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
The FDIC is an independent government agency that insures money people deposit at a bank. If the bank fails, the FDIC repays up to $250,000 per person, per ownership category at each FDIC-insured bank.
The FDIC was created in 1933 in response to the turmoil of the 1929 stock market crash. Following the crash, people rushed to withdraw their money from banks. As a result of these bank runs, as many as 9,000 banks failed and $7 billion dollars in deposits were lost, wiping out the life savings of millions of Americans.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Banking Act of 1933, establishing the FDIC to restore trust in the US banking system. The FDIC reports that since then, no one has lost any FDIC-insured money due to a bank failure.

Prediction markets price a 76% chance WMT beats earnings on August 20th, fueled by 26% eCommerce growth and a $30B buyback authorization.
Target has posted three straight quarters of sales declines while Walmart grew U.S. comps 4.1%, and Costco lacks Walmart's 37% advertising revenue engine.

Walmart (NYSE:WMT) screens as a low-deliberation candidate for a retirement portfolio heading into the Aug. 20 pre-market earnings release, and the setup is not close. Prediction-market traders are pricing a 75.5% probability of an earnings beat, the operating engine is compounding, and the capital-return machine is at its most aggressive posture in years. This is the kind of business retirees are supposed to own, and the catalyst window is 24 hours away.
Management guided Q2 FY27 to adjusted EPS of 72 cents to 74 cents on 4% to 5% constant-currency sales growth. Q1 FY27 already ran hot, with revenue of $175.68 billion (+6.1% YoY), global eCommerce up 26%, advertising up 37%, and membership fee revenue up 17%. The macro backdrop cooperates: BEA data shows June 2026 food spending at $1.573 trillion versus $1.527 trillion a year earlier, exactly the volume tailwind Walmart converts into share gains.

Recurring revenue growth of 12.4% in Q4 was driven by a differentiated value proposition centered on a modern, unified platform for HCM, finance, and IT.
Average revenue per client (ARPU) increased by 5% to approximately $37,200, fueled by the expansion of the product portfolio and increased adoption of high-value modules.
The launch of Paylocity Ignite AI represents a strategic shift toward embedding agentic capabilities directly into core workflows to drive measurable productivity gains for clients.
Sales execution remained strong with the benefit broker channel consistently contributing more than 25% of new business due to a non-compete strategy on insurance products.

Palantir's Rule of 40 score hit 155%, nearly four times the 40% benchmark, which has done much to dismantle critics' claims that it is merely an AI wrapper.
Palantir beat Q2 revenue estimates by $130 million, raised full-year guidance to $8.16 billion, and reported U.S. commercial revenue surging 149%.
Palantir's strategy of letting clients own AI model weights and infrastructure rather than renting third-party LLM access is driving its expanding commercial backlog.

It has been an up-and-down year for Iren (NASDAQ: IREN), but the stock of the neocloud operator surged 20% on July 20 after it announced $2.8 billion in new contracts. The stock has more than doubled over the past year, but has also been cut nearly in half from its highs.
The average weighted length of Iren's new contracts is four years and includes deals with hyperscalers, frontier labs, artificial intelligence (AI) developers, and enterprises. It also said that its recent arrangements include prepayments covering approximately 45% of the cost of the graphics processing units (GPUs) to be used in the deployments.
Continue »
In addition to its new contract announcements, Iren also increased its year-end AI cloud computing annual revenue run rate outlook to more than $4 billion, up from a prior target of $3.7 billion. The company is expanding aggressively. A year ago, it had a capacity of 3 megawatts, and it's expected to bring that total to 480 megawatts in 2026 and 1.2 gigawatts in 2027. Despite its growth, it said demand continues to exceed its planned capacity additions.
Iren is one of a handful of former Bitcoin miners that have shifted their focus toward AI data centers. While at first this shift may seem like a red flag, it actually does make a lot of strategic sense.

French VC is on track for its best fundraising year since 2023, but one fund has done most of the work.
According to PitchBook's Q2 2026 France Market Snapshot, French VC raised €2.4 billion (about $2.7 billion) in the first half of this year, already surpassing the €1.7 billion raised in the whole of 2025.
Paris-based biopharma investor Jeito Capital's $1.2 billion close of Jeito II in March accounts for more than 40% of that total.
Another large biopharma fundraise was the €215 million close of Kurma Biofund IV in April, backed by Eurazeo, the Australian pharmaceutical company CSL, the European Investment Fund, and Bpifrance.
