The Las Vegas Raiders have made one of the biggest decisions of training camp, and for now, they're putting their trust in NFL experience over potential.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, first-year head coach Klint Kubiak has named veteran Kirk Cousins as the team's starting quarterback ahead of their opening practice at training camp. While the decision isn't necessarily permanent, it signals that the Raiders believe Cousins gives them the best opportunity to win right now, even with one of the league's most highly anticipated rookies waiting in the wings.

With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching, contenders around the league are evaluating where they need to improve before making a postseason push. While some clubs are searching for another bat or bullpen help, starting pitching remains the biggest priority for many teams hoping to play deep into October.
Whether it's because of injuries, inconsistent performances, or simply the desire to add another frontline arm, these eight teams stand out as organizations that should be actively pursuing starting pitching before the deadline.

The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of baseball's best teams this season, but another quality starter would make an already dangerous club even more formidable. A deeper rotation could prove invaluable during a playoff run.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade from the team. Vea's agent, Collin Roberts, broke the news to ESPN on Monday.
Last month, Vea was a hold-in because of his contract situation during the Bucs mandatory mini-camp. At the time, head coach Todd Bowles said he was not concerned about it and that it was "part of the business." Now, after contract negotiations have stalled, Vea will look to end up elsewhere.
He will be entering his final year of a four-year, $71 million contract and is set to earn $17 million this season, with none of it guaranteed.
Last season, Vea appeared in all 17 games, finishing with 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and 34 tackles. In his eight seasons with the Buccaneers, he has totaled 35 sacks. In the coming days, teams will be coming out of the woodwork wanting to sign Vea, who is considered a dominant run-stopping force on the interior line.
NFL veterans are scheduled to report to NFL training camps today.

The Washington Commanders begin training camp on Wednesday, but on Monday, one day before veterans report, they delivered some surprising news. Washington was parting ways with first-year tight ends coach Ben Steele.
It was shocking news at first, but his recent arrest violated team rules, leading the Commanders to fire Steele.
The first thought here is the timing. It's less than ideal. Washington is looking for a new position coach just as training camp begins. However, there's no need to worry, as it appears the Commanders already have their replacement on staff.
Steele was arrested on June 7. Washington held its mandatory minicamp from June 16-18. The Commanders placed Steele on leave, and longtime NFL star and five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker worked with Washington's tight ends. Welker joined Washington in 2025 as a personnel ****** yst. This offseason, he was moved to an offensive ****** istant position, allowing him to help out at multiple spots.
It now appears that Welker will be Washington's new tight ends coach. Head coach Dan Quinn meets with the media on Tuesday, where it's expected he will have some sort of announcement. Of course, Welker working with Washington's tight ends during the minicamp doesn't mean he'll be the pick, but it makes the most sense. He served as a wide receivers coach for the 49ers and Dolphins before coming to Washington, so he has full-time coaching experience.

Ivorian forward Yan Diomande has joined Leipzig's pre-season camp as expected. He returns from his post-World Cup break. Diomande participated in the mandatory fitness and performance tests on Monday. In the meantime, advance negotiations continue between Real Madrid and Leipzig over the player's transfer to the Spanish capital.
Florian Plettenberg reported late on Monday that the negotiations have not been finalized yet and are expected to continue on Tuesday.
"There is still no final agreement between Real Madrid and RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande. Confirmed by all parties involved," Plettenberg posted on X.
"Unless something extraordinary happens before midnight, negotiations will continue tomorrow morning.
RB are demanding at least €120 million, with a very high guaranteed fee. Today's main sticking point was Real's complex and difficult-to-achieve bonus structure. Deal still on."

Oscar Piastri's Friday at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix was an uphill battle from the start. Forced to sit out Free Practice 1 to fulfill McLaren's mandatory rookie running requirements, the Australian had just one hour to get up to speed on a highly inconsistent, freshly resurfaced track.
Despite finishing FP2 down in eighth place—nearly 1.4 seconds off the leading pace set by Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton—Piastri remains highly optimistic about McLaren's potential this weekend.
Jumping into the MCL40 for FP2, Piastri inherited a tricky situation from reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, who had driven the car during the opening hour.

The Hungaroring proved incredibly difficult to tame, characterized by severe gusts of wind and a bizarrely inconsistent track surface where new patches of tarmac were already wearing away. Adding to the frustration, Piastri's initial qualifying simulation was completely derailed when Alpine's Franco Colapinto spun backwards into the final corner barriers, triggering a red flag.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have not gotten a start from Tyler Glasnow in months, but that is slowly changing.
Glasnow went down on the injured list with back spasms, something that was triggered back in May after one inning of work against the Houston Astros.
Since then, he was shut down for a bit, resumed throwing, and then he was shut down once again.
He has experienced a lot of stop-and-start, but over the last two weeks he has finally been cleared to resume throwing and has gotten work in.

At this moment in tennis, the three biggest names on the men's side are Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. None of them will be in attendance for this year's National Bank Open in Montreal, which is in theory a mandatory tournament.
Tennis Canada confirmed Friday that Sinner and Djokovic have withdrawn from the tournament, roughly one week before its start date on Aug. 1. Alcaraz was already known to be out with the wrist injury that has sidelined him since clay season.
It is the second straight year Sinner and Djokovic have skipped the tournament.
Sinner has played only one tournament (his successful Wimbledon ******* le defense) since his cramp-induced crashout at Roland-Garros in May. He didn't cite a specific injury or health reason for the withdrawal:
"After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal," Sinner explained in a statement. "It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritise my health. I'm disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future."

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts relayed when Edwin Diaz will return now that his rehabilitation ***** ignment is winding down and made a definetive statement on his status for the current series against Diaz's former team, the New York Mets.
Diaz is working himself back from elbow surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow, something that he believes played a big role in his struggles before hitting the injured list.
He made two horrible relief appearances against the Rockies and Rangers, and in between the outings, Diaz took an odd break of more than a week.
However, it was the Rockies' performance that was the last straw before the Dodgers took Diaz in for a deep scan on his right arm and found that he needed surgery.

The MLB Trade Deadline is less than two weeks away, and while the Los Angeles Dodgers look like the team to beat, they could still add some players to the mix.
The Dodgers don't have dire needs; in fact, they arguably are the most complete team in baseball, from top to bottom, especially when it comes to veteran talent.
They spend and spend big in free agency with the purpose of contending without needing to rely on the trade deadline to make a game-changing move.
However, especially when it comes to moves on the margins, the Dodgers do not shy away from striking a deal or upgrading on the margins.

Private mortgage insurance (PMI) is insurance that protects the lender if you don't make payments on your home loan. If you're putting less than 20% down on a home and taking out a conventional loan, you generally have to pay this cost at closing or as part of your monthly mortgage payments.
PMI is a form of mortgage insurance that applies to conventional loans. If you buy a home with a conventional loan and your down payment is less than 20% of the home's value, buying PMI is mandatory. Lenders also require you to buy PMI if you're refinancing with a conventional loan and you have less than 20% equity in the home.
Lenders set up your PMI with private insurance companies that offer it, and the cost is listed on your loan estimate and closing disclosure.
PMI is there to protect the lender, not the borrower. If you don't make your mortgage payments, the lender can recoup some of the money they're owed from the insurer. But you're not protected from late payment fines or foreclosure.

The Detroit Lions have no shortage of intriguing position battles heading into training camp, but few are more important than determining who will start opposite D.J. Reed when the regular season kicks off.
What looked like a settled position just a few months ago was thrown into complete uncertainty when former first-round pick Terrion Arnold was released in June following his arrest on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.
Now, one of the most wide-open competitions on Detroit's roster is underway.
During organized team activities and mandatory minicamp, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and veteran Rock Ya-Sin each received opportunities with the first-team defense.
However, head coach Dan Campbell was quick to caution against reading too much into those early rotations.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett is still angling for a new contract, but he won't be a holdout. Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that Brissett will be practicing with the rest of the team.
"Still ongoing. It's been productive between us and his team," LaFleur said of negotiations on a potential extension.
Brissett is set to be the team's starting quarterback this fall, but is reportedly aiming for an extension that will pay him like one. As a result, the veteran QB skipped the Cardinals' offseason workouts and optional practices while conversations were ongoing.
At the time, LaFleur downplayed Brissett's decision to miss OTAs. Brissett later made it to mandatory minicamp in June; skipping that camp or full-team training camp, which started on Thursday, would have made him a holdout.
Under Brissett's current deal, the veteran QB is set to make $4.88 million in base salary, with $1.5 million guaranteed and $2 million in potential incentives, per Spotrac. That makes him one of the lowest-paid starting quarterbacks in the league by far — below even rookie Los Angeles Rams backup Ty Simpson in annual salary, per Over the Cap.

Jacoby Brissett is at Cardinals training camp and the quarterback is not staging a hold-in for the team's first practice.
Head coach Mike LaFleur told reporters that Brissett will participate in the team's first workout of the summer on Thursday. Brissett skipped the voluntary portion of the team's offseason program and did not participate after reporting to the team's mandatory minicamp last month.
Brissett is looking for a revised contract that better reflects his position as the team's likely starter at quarterback to kick off the season. There has been no agreement on a new deal at this point, but LaFleur said at his press conference that talks on that front have been "productive."
As long as things remain unresolved on the contract front, there would be a chance that Brissett makes a different decision regarding his practice plans but camp will open with the veteran taking reps along with his fellow quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Carson Beck.

When the Leeds United squad boarded their flight to North America this week, one name was missing from the manifest. Largie Ramazani was left behind at Thorp Arch. It was a calculated move. Unmistakable, really. Spanish outlet Marca broke the news that the 25-year-old winger has been excluded from the club's stateside tour, signalling to anyone paying attention that Daniel Farke has effectively closed the door on the Belgian's time in West Yorkshire.
Valencia are waiting in the wings. Having hosted Ramazani on loan throughout the 2025/26 La Liga campaign, the Spanish outfit want him back at the Mestalla, this time permanently. Their CEO, Ron Gourlay, initiated contact with Leeds chiefs back in June to sniff out a realistic asking price.
Money is the sticking point. Leeds naturally want to claw back a hefty chunk of the £10 million package paid to Almería back in 2024, particularly with a 15 per cent sell-on clause owed to the Spanish side hanging over the deal. Valencia, operating on a far tighter budget, want a bargain. They have floated the idea of another season-long loan with a non-mandatory option to buy. Leeds should shut that down instantly. A second loan leaves all the risk on Elland Road balance sheets while Valencia reap the rewards without dropping a single euro on a permanent transfer fee.
Ramazani's spell in Spain was decent enough. Playing under Carlos Corberan on the left wing, he notched six goals and one ***** ist in 22 top-flight outings, logging 1,224 minutes on the pitch. A return of six goals from a wide player in a transitional Valencia side is a solid foundation. Yet, his 6.62 average match rating on FotMob points to a player who still drifts. He can vanish for 70 minutes, only to pop up with a flash of brilliance.
That was always the conundrum in West Yorkshire, too. During Leeds' Championship ***** le-winning campaign, Ramazani made 31 appearances but started a paltry nine times. Bizarrely, his underlying metric, xG plus xA per 90 minutes, was the highest of any player in the entire division. The data screamed elite output. Farke's team selections said something else entirely. The German manager simply never trusted him to do the dirty work off the ball.

Kimi Antonelli will miss first practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix as Mercedes fulfiil one of their mandatory rookie driver sessions.
Antonelli, who leads the world championship by 45 points after 10 rounds, will step aside for Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti at the Hungaroring.
F1 teams are mandated to run a rookie twice in each car over the course of the season and usually opt for a normal race weekend – with three practice sessions – at a well-known circuit to give their youngsters a chance.
As such, four other teams will also use FP1 on Friday to run a rookie, with F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli replacing Oscar Piastri at McLaren.
Another notable rookie is former IndyCar star Colton Herta, a test driver at Cadillac, replacing Valtteri Bottas on Friday.

Canelo Alvarez has suggested he will never box David Benavidez, saying “it’s not fair” that the Mexican-American fights in the weight classes he occupies.
Fans have long desired a showdown between Mexico’s Canelo, a former four-weight world champion, and Benavidez, a three-weight world champion, with many accusing Canelo of “ducking” the 29-year-old.
Canelo has held ***** les at super-welterweight, middleweight, super-middleweight, and even light-heavyweight, while Benavidez has held gold at super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and cruiserweight.
Benavidez was even the WBC mandatory challenger to Canelo at super-middleweight for more than two years, without obtaining a fight with the 36-year-old. Benavidez thus moved up to light-heavyweight and, most recently, cruiserweight, where he took the WBA and WBO belts from Gilberto Ramirez with a stoppage win in May.
But Canelo has said he does not care about suggestions that he has avoided Benavidez, telling journalist Ariel Helwani: “I’m not worried because I did everything. I did everything in boxing. I accomplished everything in boxing, and I have nothing to prove, but yes, I will miss boxing a lot [when I retire].

Much has already been written about the lucrative nature of FIFA’s mandated hydration breaks during the 2026 World Cup. Broadcasters like Fox cashed in in a big way, and the mid-half stoppages will certainly be a key point of discussion when FIFA brings its broadcast rights for the 2030 and 2034 tournaments to market in the coming months.
Less, however, has been said about the potential competitive benefits to hydration breaks in soccer. For the first time this summer, coaches and players were able to collect themselves mid-half to go over strategy and alter tactics to better matchup with an opponent.
Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks is an advocate for keeping these breaks for those reasons. In an interview with Variety, he explained why.
“I think I [sic] has made the games more close,” he told the outlet, noting that the 2026 World Cup had fewer “blowouts,” which is particularly impressive considering it was the first time the field had been expanded to 48 teams. “It makes a difference for players to be able to collect their thoughts. …It has probably been a positive for the game,” Shanks said.
Plenty of sports have made changes that help make the product more entertaining, and if hydration breaks truly help competitive balance in soccer, it’s no surprise that television networks would advocate for their inclusion. But soccer is a sport steeped in history and tradition, and introducing a mandatory stoppage in each half that ultimately amounts to a strategic reset will be met with resistance by traditionalists.

Ramsey says a mandatory pension contribution counts for only half its value toward the 15% retirement savings goal, so a 9% contribution counts as just 5%.
Pensions earn half-credit because workers have no investment control and conservative regulations cap average returns at around 7%, below self-directed stock accounts.
Ramsey advises pension holders to add 10% into self-directed accounts like a 403(b), 457, or Roth IRA to close the retirement savings gap.
Are you ahead, or behind on retirement? SmartAsset's free tool can match you with a financial advisor in minutes to help you answer that today. Each advisor has been carefully vetted, and must act in your best interests. Don't waste another minute; learn more here.
A school administrator called into Dave Ramsey's Everyday Millionaires with a question many public-sector workers wonder: her job requires her to put 9% of her pay into a pension, so does that contribution count toward the 15% of income Ramsey famously tells people to save for retirement? His answer was a firm no, not fully, and the reasoning matters for anyone with a pension.

Tarik Skubal is one of the best pitchers in MLB, but that may not be enough to keep him in Detroit. With Skubal set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, the Tigers are approaching a critical crossroads. While Detroit remains within striking distance of a playoff spot, the front office must ask itself a difficult question: is a late postseason push worth risking the loss of its ace for nothing this winter? If the answer is no, then the Tigers should seriously consider making the biggest trade of the deadline.

Every organization hopes to keep a pitcher of Skubal's caliber, but free agency can quickly change those plans. Unless Detroit is confident it can sign him to a long-term extension, trading him now may be the smartest move for the franchise's future.
A deal involving Skubal wouldn't simply bring back prospects—it could reshape the Tigers' rotation and farm system for years to come.

The Kansas City Royals' disappointing 2026 MLB season has taken another devastating turn. On Wednesday morning, the Royals announced that superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. will be placed on the injured list after exiting Monday night's game with a back injury.
While the team has not yet provided a timetable for his return, the decision to place him on the IL indicates the injury is significant enough to sideline one of baseball's brightest young stars. For a team already buried in the standings, losing Witt is the last thing Kansas City needed.
