The Detroit Red Wings are moving forward without Dylan Larkin, and two of the team's biggest stars have made it clear that the remaining players aren't going to let the controversy derail their season.
Following Thursday night's emotional 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, Moritz Seider and Alex DeBrincat spoke about the challenges facing Detroit after Larkin informed the organization he would no longer play while awaiting a trade.
And while neither player dismissed what Larkin has meant to the franchise, both emphasized the importance of having players who are committed to the team.
Their comments offered an interesting glimpse into a locker room suddenly facing life without its former captain.

The Detroit Red Wings have spent months answering questions about Dylan Larkin. Following Thursday night's victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, head coach Todd McLellan made it clear that he's ready to talk about something else.
Winning hockey games.
Just hours after the organization officially suspended Larkin without pay, the Red Wings delivered an impressive 4-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena.
And afterward, McLellan had a message that should tell everyone exactly where his priorities stand.

Bruised and battered, the Carolina Hurricanes met their first loss in seven games against the Calgary Flames – missing key pieces of their lineup in the second half of their back-to-back weekend set. The Flames took the game with a 3-2 win, ironically mirroring the same score the Hurricanes had in their win against the Winnipeg Jets just the day before.
Entering Sunday night's contest, Carolina was not just missing Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall, but it was also Mark Jankowski – who had centered Staal's third line – due to a lower-body injury. Following the game, head coach Rod Brind'Amour further discussed that Jankowski had been shipped back to Raleigh to have his injury checked out.
The game honestly played out very similarly to the one against the Jets Saturday, with the first period ending in a 0-0 tie, and the second period ending in a 2-2 tie, with the third period having the singular goal – the game-winner.
In the second frame, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored first on a slick wrist shot with help from Nicolas Deslauriers and Eric Robinson in a shift that their line was determined to find twine on.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi gets the first goal of the game–and his second goal in as many games!

CALGARY. Alberta (AP) — Yegor Sharangovich scored the go-ahead goal with 4:28 left and the Calgary Flames ended Carolina's seven-game winning streak, beating the defending champion Hurricanes 3-2 on Saturday night for their second victory of the season.
Morgan Frost set up the winning goal after scoring on a power play in the second period. Matvei Gridin also scored, and Devin Cooley made 34 saves to help Calgary improve to 2-6-0.
On the deciding play, Frost sent a saucer pass across the slot to Sharangovich, who one-timed it as soon as the puck landed on his stick and picked the top corner, sending goalie Brandon Bussi's water bottle flying.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jalen Chatfield scored for Carolina, and Bussi made 31 saves. The Hurricanes dropped do 7-2-1.
Hurricanes: At Vancouver on Tuesday night.

The Carolina Hurricanes lost for the first time in two weeks on the second night of a back-to-back, and Calgary picked up their second win of the season thanks to a late third period goal by Yegor Sharangovich. The 3-2 loss ended the Cane's winning streak at seven, and was their first road loss of the year.
The loss came with some rough news before puck drop as Mark Jankowski was scratched as a game time decision, leading to Nicolas Deslauriers having to draw in and Jordan Martinook to play center on the normal Staal line. Already missing Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall, the Jankowski injury left the Canes scrambling, and after the game it sounded as if it was something to worry about as he was sent back to Raleigh to have it checked out according to Rod Brind'Amour
The action really didn't get going until the second period. The first had plenty of back and forth, but both Brandon Bussi for Carolina and Devin Cooley for Calgary handled the shots in front of them well. The Canes outshot Calgary 14-8, but as tends to happen with the shots that get through Carolina's defense, the Calgary shots were some high-quality ones that required good stops by Bussi.
In the second it was more of the same until Jesperi Kotkaniemi decided it was time for him to score again. With the loss of Jordan Staal, Kotkaniemi has had steady ice time playing mostly on the fourth line. He was rewarded for his patience on Saturday with a goal in Winnipeg, and on Sunday he found the back of the net again thanks to a great pass from Nicolas Deslauriers. Watching the highlight, you can see that Kotkaniemi was happier about Deslauriers getting the point than he was about getting the goal.

The Montreal Canadiens have spent much of the summer resisting the urge to force another major move.
A fresh trade possibility could give general manager Kent Hughes a way to strengthen the middle of his lineup without chasing one of the biggest names on the market.
Ken MacMillan of The Hockey Writers named the Calgary Flames as one of three teams Montreal could trade with during the preseason on Aug. 22, singling out Morgan Frost as an ideal fit for the Canadiens.
Frost is coming off a career year in Calgary.

This week had absolutely everything you could hope for: an upset that sent an NSL side home from the Canadian Championship, seven goals in Calgary, a stoppage-time winner in Vancouver and a Montréal side that walked away from Toronto with another clean sheet.
With the regular season moving deeper into August, every result is starting to tilt the playoff scales. Here's how the latest run of action unfolded.
Wednesday, Aug. 12 | Stade Boréale, Laval, Quebec | Canadian Championship quarterfinal
Simcoe County Rovers FC did not look like an underdog when the whistle blew. They bloomed into a team that had decided the occasion belonged to them.
Just three minutes into the match, Teagan Handley swung a corner into the box and Tia Schaffer rose above the crowd to bury a header. The early goal gave Simcoe something valuable against an experienced Montréal side: confidence.

CALGARY, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Canadian pipeline firms are proposing billions of dollars in new projects despite oil sands companies being reluctant to commit to significant production expansions amid ongoing uncertainty around climate policies and long-term global demand.
At least six different pipeline projects are underway or proposed in Canada, to move oil to the United States or to export markets on the Pacific coast. If all are built, the country's export pipeline capacity would increase by 45%, or 2.25 million barrels per day, by 2035, according to a Reuters calculation.
But filling all those pipes would require Canadian oil supply to increase by more than a third by 2034, a near-doubling of its current annual average growth rate. It would also require Canadian producers to move ahead with major new oil sands projects of the type that no company has undertaken in more than a decade.
The mismatch between proposed export pipeline expansions and the pace of output growth highlights how Canada may struggle to achieve Prime Minister Mark Carney's "energy superpower" ambitions, despite a more supportive regulatory environment and growing interest in Canadian oil from international buyers.

The Princess of Wales, 44, is known to wear hemlines that are categorised as 'midi' in length. This is not only due to her classic personal preference, but also her adherence to the unofficial royal style rule that prefers royal women to opt for hemlines no higher than four inches above the knee.
Although this hasn't been confirmed, due to the fact there is no official royal style etiquette book for the public to see, we take our information from style experts and from studying the formal dressing ethos the royal family follows.

One might think that being traded internationally twice in a four-month span is particularly taxing on an NHL player — but former Utah Mammoth defenseman Olli Määttä said it wasn't that bad.
"This move is the easiest one yet," Määttä said on a Finnish-language podcast (interpreted by Google Translate). "Our gear is already in storage, so we just have to tell the company not to unload it in Calgary but to bring it back across the border."
Määttä, 31, was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Minnesota Wild on July 2. He'd only been in Calgary since March, when the Mammoth traded him there as part of the MacKenzie Weegar deal.
Any day with an NHL logo on your chest is a good day, right?
"It's more exciting than anything," Määttä said in his introductory press conference with the Wild reporters. "I'm happy to be part of a team like that that's pushing to win. It's a really good feeling that they want me."

Another tournament, another triumph for local baseball players.
The Mafia Baseball Club, a Pacific Northwest team, won their ticket to play in the Babe Ruth World Series. On July 13-17, the Mafia Baseball Club was the top finishing team in the Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Now, they're going to Branson, Missouri. The Babe Ruth World Series is scheduled to begin on July 27 and run through August 5.
The Mafia Baseball Club of Oregon was formed in the summer of 2025 and is coached by Luke Roth and Mateo Vodjansky. Many of the Clatsop County athletes are familiar with Roth since his company, Mid-Major Media, that publishes on social media, covers many of the 4A-1A athletes throughout the state of Oregon. Roth said he started Mid-Major Media with the intention of highlighting the underrepresented athletes in smaller schools and communities across the state. His company is also a sponsor of the Mafia Baseball Club.
Mafia Baseball Club has roots in both Toledo, Washington and Northwest Oregon. The 2026 team features local athletes from Astoria, Warrenton, Seaside and Knappa, among others. Oliver Stevens (Knappa), Zephan Pierce (Warrenton), Sam Schacher (Astoria), Dallas Norris (Astoria) and Hayden Halsen (Seaside) all have spent parts of their summer playing with the team.
The graduated senior Pierce from Warrenton High School and incoming Knappa High School senior Stevens, had strong regional performances as both a pitcher and catcher. At the regional tournament in Calgary, Stevens spun a total of 7.2 innings and struck out 8, while Pierce hit .333 and had a .429 on base percentage.

A friend of mine offered an interesting question, mostly just to chat about for a little and move on but it’s been sticking in my mind for a while now. The question was who will be in last place in the Eastern Conference next season?
It’s been an interesting point to ponder on in the dead of summer. Not all the teams are particularly good, but no one is currently trying to be bad by punting the season through a long-term rebuilding strategy these days that has made themselves a poor team either. There are no Chicago’s or Calgary’s in the East these days that will drop far behind the pack and await what they hope will be a brighter future. All 16 teams in the East, to varying degrees, have the goal, desire and something of an expectation to make the playoffs next season.
That shapes up to mean chaos and fun. Take a look at last season – the three worst teams in the Eastern Conference ended up being Florida (the 2x defending Stanley Cup champions), Toronto (the team that finished second in points for the conference the year prior in 2024-25) and the New York Rangers (who were first in the East as recently as 2023-24).
That’s probably three teams that this time 12 months ago almost no one would have guessed would be at the bottom of the conference, although there were some warning signs with NYR and Aleksander Barkov’s preseason injury did impact the Panthers in a predictable way before the year started. If anything in the modern NHL, you might as well throw out the results of the prior year when attempting to forecast the future. The base of what has happened isn’t going to be a roadmap for what is to come, by and large for many teams.
Going off my preseason predictions, I would have had Philadelphia, Boston and Pittsburgh as the bottom-three teams in 2025-26, all of which you might notice made the playoffs. That’s pretty humbling to undertake the projection of who could be the worst in 2026-27.

Chevron is cutting up to 9,000 jobs this year. That's a fifth of its global workforce, gone, while it digests the $53 billion Hess deal. ExxonMobil trimmed 2,000. BP shed more than 5 percent of its staff, plus 3,000 contractors. ConocoPhillips is cutting 20 to 25 percent. Imperial Oil is cutting a fifth of its people and shutting its Calgary office entirely. And in June, U.S. oil and gas extraction employment fell to 114,500 workers, the second-lowest June the Bureau of Labor Statistics has on record, beaten only by the pandemic bottom of 2021.

Back in January 2016, extraction employment topped out at 187,300, right before the price crash gutted the sector…

CALGARY, July 8 (Reuters) - Big Tech has joined the party at the Calgary Stampede, a sign of growing interest in Canada from U.S.-based hyperscalers as the province of Alberta courts data center development.
Oil and gas companies typically take center stage at the annual energy get-together, timed with the city's famous rodeo. But this year, U.S.-based tech giants have a noticeable corporate presence as well, according to sources attending the parties.
Alphabet's Google has been the most highly visible, helping sponsor Stampede for the second year in a row. The company hosted a private party Sunday at the Corona Skydeck, an exclusive rooftop patio overlooking the Stampede rodeo grounds, with enough capacity for 300 guests.
The party was attended by federal and provincial politicians and government staff, among other guests, according to a Reuters source.

They're calling it the Landon DuPont draft, the early consensus No. 1 prospect with the University of Michigan for the 2027 NHL Draft.
DuPont, a 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman who committed to the Wolverines after playing two seasons with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, is expected to be selected first overall by the Calgary Flames in The Athletic's 2027 mock draft.
The Red Wings, based on the team's future odds with or without captain Dylan Larkin, are expected to drop to seventh-worst (25th overall) in the league after finishing 16th overall and out of the playoffs last year.
With the seventh overall pick, The Athletic has the Red Wings taking 6-foot-4, 200-pound center Gunnar Conboy, who had 12 goals, nine ******* ists, 21 points and 83 penalty minutes in 32 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League.

The offseason so far has been filled with excitement, with plenty of big-name players on the move. There are still several marquee names available on the trade block, and the New Jersey Devils are hoping to get involved.
They got started even before the draft by arming themselves for the offseason.
Sunny Mehta made his first big splash by trading Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a substantial haul of draft capital. The deal netted the Devils two first-round picks (both top-10 protected) in 2027 and 2028, along with a second-round selection at 35th overall in 2026.
That move had many wondering if Mehta was going to emulate his mentor, Bill Zito, and flip those high-value ******* ets for something even greater.
After all, the Florida Panthers reeled in Brady Tkachuk.

Jun. 27—The Spokane Chiefs had two players selected on the second day of the 2026 NHL draft on Saturday at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
Winger Chase Harrington was taken with the fourth pick in the second round, 36th overall, by the Calgary Flames while center Tyus Sparks was selected with the fifth pick in the fourth round (101 overall) by the Washington Capitals.
Harrington, a 6-foot-1 winger from Prince George, British Columbia, recorded a career-high 28 goals and 57 points in 61 games during the 2025-26 WHL season. He led the Chiefs with 105 penalty minutes and has recorded 130 points and 173 PIMs in 194 career regular season games for Spokane. He was named the Chiefs co-player of the year last season.
Harrington was the top-rated U.S.-division player in the final predraft rankings, 26th among North American skaters. He was originally Spokane's eighth-overall pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects draft.
"I bring grit, I bring physicality, I bring compete," Harrington told WHL.com. "I can put pucks in the net. I'll be a physical presence out there."

The ******* le a nod to song from a certain movie, anyways it’s difficult to draft NHL players. NHL teams are tasked with scouting players mostly when they are 16 and 17 years old and have to try and rank what they will be as fully formed adults. Needless to say, it’s not an exact science and a process that ends up with more misses than hits. Our results of making picks alongside the Penguins at their spot in the draft has gone about the same way. Here’s the last decade of fake vs real drafting.
Well, on the plus side at least four out of the five mock picks prior to 2025 that we made played in the NHL last season. That’s better than the Pens ended up with in reality. A player like Hoglander has spun his wheels professionally in recent years (really, he might just need to get out of Vancouver ASAP to benefit his career) and might not be looking to be as proud of a pick as it might have seemed a couple years ago when he produced a 24-goal season. Hoglander’s recent career plateau aside, he worked out a lot better than the actual pick of Sam Poulin did.
The real Pittsburgh 2020 first round pick got traded in the last minute to Toronto for Kasperi Kapanen. The Maple Leafs ended up using that pick to select forward Rodion Amirov, who sadly passed away in 2023 after battling brain cancer. The Penguins ended up getting 162 games and 82 points (29 goals + 53 ******* ists) out of Kapanen before waiving him in 2023 and seeing him go to St. Louis. Zary, for his part, has 86 points (and some good defensive metrics) in 191 games with Calgary. So I guess there’s a case to be made that the Pens would have been better off in the long run for holding onto their pick depending on what they did with it, but then again they wanted a NHL forward for 2020-22 to help their late-stage contention windows and it ended up not panning out since Kapanen didn’t help push the team that far forward while he was on it, and then was jettisoned as a bad contract to allow more cap ******* e via dropping him for nothing.
2022 isn’t looking to great either for our pick, or for the Penguins after draft+4. Ivan Miroshnichenko has only played 52 career NHL games, mostly as a spare part forward. He has become an excellent AHL player but needs to make a big move soon if he’s going to establish himself. Owen Pickering, well we’ve all spent a lot of time on his case. We remain convinced former Penguins GM Ron Hextall thought/hoped he had found Travis Sanheim 2.0 when he drafted Pickering – unfortunately though, at this point there’s enough evidence to say that he got Temu Sanheim instead. Pickering might go on to play NHL games in a modest role, it looks like he will fall short of his draft day ceiling of a matchup defender that could have played up the lineup.
We have plans for a victory lap in 2023, Matthew Wood scored 17 goals and put up 30 points in the NHL in his draft+3 season with Nashville. That’s the dream development curve from a mid-first round pick these days, gotta see som

Keyera Corp. has completed the acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in the KAPS Pipeline from infrastructure investment firm Stonepeak for C$1.215 billion, consolidating ownership of one of Western Canada's most important natural gas liquids transportation systems.
The Calgary-based midstream company said the transaction closed immediately upon signing and gives Keyera full ownership and operational control of the pipeline network, which transports condensate and NGLs from the rapidly expanding Montney and Duvernay shale plays to downstream markets.
The KAPS system has become increasingly important as producers in the Montney and Duvernay continue to boost liquids-rich natural gas production. Keyera said it has secured more than 120,000 barrels per day of additional commitments across KAPS Zones 1 through 4 since 2025, supporting long-term contracted revenue growth.
The acquisition comes as construction of KAPS Zone 4 remains on schedule and on budget, with the expansion expected to enter service in mid-2027. The project is designed to accommodate growing volumes from Western Canada's most active unconventional resource basins.
Keyera expects the deal to be accretive to distributable cash flow per share over the next several years and said the pipeline should generate significant free cash flow through the end of the decade following completion of Zone 4. The company estimates the transaction represents an acquisition multiple of roughly 11 times projected 2029 EBITDA based on currently contracted volumes.

The Northern Super League (NSL) returned from a week-long break with another string of unpredictable results, with Ottawa Rapid FC taking the lead in the table.
For weeks, the Montréal Roses looked untouchable. They sat at the top of the standings and seemed destined to extend their lead. Instead, the door for Ottawa opened and they were forced to settle for a late draw in Toronto.
Of course, DB Pridham wasn’t going to let that opportunity go to waste.
A commanding 3-1 victory over Vancouver Rise FC had ended their impressive winning streak. Unfortunately, it also sent the Rapid to the top of the table for the first time this season. Here’s the stinger: Ottawa is a genuine ****** le contender.
Elsewhere, Halifax Tides FC secured three points and a second clean sheet this season. They maintained their upward trajectory with a controlled victory over Calgary Wild FC.

One is one of the most successful managers in franchise history. Without the other, the franchise might not even be here.
On June 27 at Isotopes Park, former Isotopes manager Lorenzo Bundy and former Pacific Coast League President Branch Rickey III will headline this year's class being inducted into the Albuquerque Professional Baseball Hall of Fame.
Bundy racked up 226 wins as the Isotopes manager from 2011-2013 and was the 2012 PCL Manager of the Year. His .523 win percentage is second only to Tim Wallach's .530 from 2009-10. Bundy's 2012 Isotopes squad tied a franchise record with 80 wins and marked the last time the team made the playoffs.
Rickey, the grandson of Wesley Branch Rickey, who helped integrate Major League Baseball in 1947, was PCL president from 1998-2020 and was a key part of the relocation of the Calgary Cannons to Albuquerque, where the Isotopes played their first season in 2003 following the Dukes' decision to leave town after the 2000 season.
During his tenure, Rickey oversaw the construction of 10 new ballparks, including Isotopes Park, and also helped secure Albuquerque's hosting of the 2007 Triple-A All-Star Game and the 2011 Triple-A Championship Game.
