Palantir (PLTR) CEO Alex Karp recently mentioned the words "Token Industrial Complex" in his Q2 letter to shareholders. In his usual aggressive fashion, Karp has publicly criticized closed-weight AI models, accusing them of various things, including adding no real value, increasing enterprise costs, and stealing intellectual property. As a result, he believes there are two layers that will naturally stand out: Nvidia's (NVDA) compute layer and Palantir's application layer.
Karp is an outspoken CEO, and he often takes an extreme stance on many things. However, his comments on the Token Industrial Complex are more than just rhetoric. He makes a valid point, but you'll need to understand the difference between open-weight and closed-weight models first. An open-weight model is one where users can download, modify, and run the final trained numerical parameters, also known as weights. A closed-weight model is one where users cannot see or modify the trained parameters and can only send inputs and receive outputs.

Riverwater Partners, an investment management company, released its 'Small Cap Strategy' Q2 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. The Small Cap Strategy underperformed the Russell 2000 in the second quarter as the benchmark experienced one of its strongest risk-on rallies in recent memory, although the strategy remained ahead year-to-date. The quarter was defined by accelerating AI investment, energy market disruptions, and renewed investor appetite for higher-beta stocks, creating headwinds for the firm's quality-focused approach and healthcare positioning. Despite this, stock selection contributed positively in energy, materials, and financials, while healthcare and consumer discretionary detracted due to the fund's disciplined avoidance of speculative businesses. Looking ahead, the firm remains cautiously optimistic, focusing on opportunities created by market dislocations, including AI infrastructure enablers, select consumer companies, healthcare innovators, and energy businesses trading below intrinsic value. The strategy continues to emphasize high-quality companies with strong management teams and attractive valuations, positioning the portfolio for a potential rotation away from speculative market leadership. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy highlighted The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD). The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) is a leading player in the foodservice industry. On August 28, 2026, The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) closed at $112.75 per share. The one-month return of The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) was -17.98% and its shares gained 1.19% over the past 52 weeks. The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) has a market capitalization of $5.14 billion with a 52-week trading range between $89.14 - $148.55.
Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy stated the following regarding The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"In May we established a position in The Middleby Corporation (NASDAQ:MIDD), the commercial foodservice and food processing equipment leader, funded by trims of Modine (MOD) and Kodiak Gas Services (KGS). Middleby delivered its strongest organic growth in two years, with commercial foodservice up nearly 10% and food processing up 25%, repurchased almost 5% of its shares outstanding in a single quarter, and set a July 6 date for the spin-off of its food processing business. We believe the separation will let the market properly value two focused businesses, and we wanted to own the company ahead of that catalyst."

Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy stated the following regarding PDF Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:PDFS) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"PDF Solutions, a provider of yield ***** ytics and data software for semiconductor manufacturers, returned approximately 52% in the quarter. During May, long-time strategic holder Advantest exited its entire 8% stake through an upsized secondary offering, with PDF selling additional shares alongside to fund general corporate purposes and potential debt reduction. We interpreted the heavily oversubscribed deal as a sign of management taking control of its own destiny, and we used the offering-related weakness to add a full percentage point to the position, funded by a sale of Veeco (VECO) to keep our overall semiconductor exposure in check. Late in the quarter we trimmed a portion of the position after the sharp run, consistent with our practice of harvesting gains in extended semiconductor names..." (Click here to read the full text)

Brennan ***** et Management recently released its Q2 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. Investors were optimistic about a potential truce with Iran, highlighted by a mid-June memorandum for negotiations on regional security and sanctions, causing oil prices to drop and the market to rally. Despite geopolitical uncertainties, investors remain focused on a surge in AI infrastructure spending, which is expected to heavily influence the global economy, although questions about the returns from this investment loom. Overall, the S&P 500 remains at high valuations, seemingly unfazed by these challenges, while there are few pockets of value left, mostly outside the U.S. market. Brennan ***** et Management stated the following regarding Garrett Motion Inc. (NASDAQ:GTX) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"TIGO and Garrett Motion Inc. (NASDAQ:GTX) operate in vastly different businesses, but our investment journey with each shares some similarities. We believe that both are good businesses. TIGO is an oligopoly of an essential service (broadband and cell phone). Meanwhile, GTX is an oligopoly provider of turbochargers to the automotive industry with a potentially valuable new product portfolio focused on industrial and electric vehicle (EV) markets. At the time of purchase, both stocks were hated and exceptionally cheap. GTX was a post bankruptcy special situation name, and we initially bought preferred shares that ultimately were forcefully converted to common stock. As EV sales expanded across the world, there was understandable concern that GTX's core turbocharger business was at risk and huge uncertainty arose about whether the company could ever crack the EV market. The dollar index (DXY00) is down by -0.16% today. The dollar is modestly lower today, consolidating below last Friday's 2-week high. Today's rally in the Chinese yuan to a 3.5-year high is undercutting the dollar.
However, losses in the dollar are limited today as WTI crude oil climbs more than +2% to a 1-week high, which raises inflation expectations and could potentially persuade the Fed to raise interest rates, a supportive factor for the dollar. Also, weaker stocks today have boosted some liquidity demand for the dollar, and higher T-note yields have strengthened the dollar's interest rate differentials. Finally, the dollar has some carryover support from last Friday, when Fed Chair Warsh warned inflation isn't meaningfully slowing and vowed that policymakers will return inflation to their 2% target. The chance of a Fed rate hike at next month's FOMC meeting rose to 63% today from 36% before Warsh's speech.

When it comes to profiting from the current AI boom, you don't necessarily have to invest in the central players. Sure, the likes of Nvidia (NVDA), Micron (MU), and TSMC (TSM) are raking in the money and giving shareholders triple-digit returns.
But sometimes, the better opportunities lie with the companies serving as the foundation of the AI boom. The ones supplying the materials, equipment, and infrastructure that make up the rest of data centers.
Tired of missing midday reversals? The FREE Barchart Brief newsletter keeps you in the know. Sign up now!
That brings us to an interesting matchup in that AI infrastructure play. One company is providing connectivity materials that all data centers need to move all their information across, well, everywhere, while the other supplies the equipment to the chipmakers themselves.
Both companies are pillars of the AI boom, but they're supporting different sides of the sector.

The company continues to gain share as advanced node transitions increase materials intensity per wafer, while improving memory and logic markets support broader growth. With its investment cycle largely complete, margin expansion and improving free cash flow should drive the next phase of earnings growth. We remain attracted to Entegris' strong competitive positioning and high barriers to entry."

Andvari **** ociates, an investment management firm, released its first-quarter 2025 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. Andvari's portfolio has performed strongly in the quarter, highlighted by Constellation Software's 19.9% revenue growth and its plans to spend on acquisitions in 2026. The company is also focusing on AI tools to enhance productivity and customer relationships. NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) has a market capitalization of $5.25 trillion.
Andvari ******* ociates stated the following regarding NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Another reason why I am increasingly cautious here is I've begun to see more examples of circular financing among the companies involved with the AI investment boom. For example, when NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) invested in OpenAI in late 2025, it was reported most of the money would be used to lease Nvidia chips. Also, some companies like Nvidia and Anthropic have invested directly into special purpose vehicles (SPVs), which in turn use that money to buy hardware from those exact same hardware makers. Then there are AI companies like Anthropic who have begun to use massive SPVs, backed by private equity firms, to borrow billions to buy chips and servers. The AI company then leases the chips from the SPV and thus the debt can stay on its own balance sheet. I've also read that some Nvidia customers are using Nvidia chips as collateral for loans to buy even more chips. This is the same type of behavior that eventually got many telecom and tech companies into huge trouble during the dot com bubble of the 1990s."

The ugly US debt picture seems to get uglier by the day.
Case in point: rising interest payments on some $40 trillion in debt, in part powered by a recent climb in Treasury yields.
US annual interest expense is up to a record 18.5% of federal government revenue, according to fresh ****** ysis from bond investment firm Doubleline (see chart below). This is now officially above the previous record of 18.4% set in 1991.
"The US debt crisis is in uncharted territory," strategists at the Kobeissi Letter wrote in a note.
Consider this: The aforementioned percentage has more than quadrupled over the past four years. The US annual interest expense now stands at a record $1.25 trillion, more than four times the level seen in 1991.

AEW All In 2026 delivered as one of the year's best professional wrestling events this past Sunday in London. On the grand stage of the world-famous Wembley Stadium, one of the annual spectacle's biggest moments was the debut of Kofi and Austin Creed — now known as The New Level after spending years in WWE as Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods of The New Day.
The legendary duo wasn't advertised for the pay-per-view event, but instead made their arrival as a surprise entrant in the promotion's first-ever Trios Roulette Royal match for the AEW Trios Championships. Alongside Swerve Strickland, Kofi and Creed pulled off the win to become the new champions on only their first night on the job.
Kofi and Creed parted ways with WWE in a shocking development in May after a 12-year run teaming together, in addition to teaming with Big E. While Big E remained with the company as a retired wrestler-turned-analyst, Kofi and Creed were asked to take significant pay cuts when it came time to negotiate their contracts.
Speaking on Monday's edition of "The Ariel Helwani Show," they revealed that they only officially signed with AEW a day before All In. Regarding their WWE departure, the reported 50% pay-cut ask was incorrect: it was higher, according to Kofi.
"We just thought the terms that they wanted us to perform under were not fair based on what we brought to the table, based on what we're worth, based on the knowledge and prowess we have as performers and wrestlers," Kofi told Uncrowned. "What we can give back to the younger people and do in entertainment. Being able to go out there and garner a reaction as good guys or bad guys, no matter the situation. We took a lot of great pride in being Swiss Army knives. Whatever the situation was, we would make it great and make it entertaining. Compensation was definitely a big part, for sure, but more so, we wanted to work.

Following their preseason finale on Thursday, the New England Patriots received a needed weekend off as the front office dwindled the roster down to 53 players.
That group was back at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday for their first regular season practice in preparation for the Seattle Seahawks.
As they did, they remained without running back TreVeyon Henderson after the second-year back suffered an ankle injury early last week. Henderson was present in the locker room in good spirits and walking normally, but has not yet fully been cleared to return to work.
The only other non-participant on the roster was tight end Cameron Latu, who was claimed off of waivers on Monday. Latu was in the locker room ahead of practice after just arriving to the team.
Fellow waiver claim, Darius Muasau, was on the practice field.

Left-wing podcaster Jennifer Welch had Kara Swisher cracking up at her wild theory about the identity of the Natalie Harp leaker.
Harp, the executive ***** istant to President Donald Trump, was thrust into the forefront of national discussion after she was mentioned in a rally speech by Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA). Since then, her close relationship to Trump — which critics have speculated is far more than professional — has been the subject of intense scrutiny.
During a recent episode of Swisher's podcast Pivot, Welch said she didn't understand the "cultish worship" of Trump and predicted there would be "infighting" and "cannibalism" within the MAGA base. She then cited the Harp leaks as proof of this.
"I think, you know, whoever is leaking all of these crazy letters from Natalie Harp, the 'bunny boiler,' Welch said. "You know that it's somebody in there that's trying to sabotage the bunny boiler. So, I think it's the most toxic work environment."
Swisher then asked Welch who she believed the leaker was, and burst into laughter at her answer.

The 2026 Venice Film Festival starts on Wednesday, and the first wave of celebrities has already begun arriving at the Hotel Excelsior on the Lido. With 11 days of premieres, photocalls and parties ahead of us, consider this the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a very busy fashion week.
Jacopo Raule/FilmMagic
Amal Clooney was among the first to arrive alongside George Clooney, who will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during Wednesday's opening ceremony.
Considering Amal and Venice have given us some memorable fashion moments over the years, I'm excited to see what she has in store for us this time around.
Amal usually gives us summer hues during a festival that sits right at the tail end of the season, but on this rare occasion she opted for a darker palette in Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann Spring 2027.

Hotchkis & Wiley, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund." A copy can be downloaded here. Equity markets posted strong returns, with the Russell 1000 Value Index rising by 13.9%, although many individual stocks lagged. Notably, semiconductor stocks and AI-related sectors saw exceptional gains. The rally appeared speculative, marked by a stark difference in performance between high-beta and low-volatility stocks, along with momentum stocks outperforming the market significantly. Despite heightened enthusiasm for AI investments, concerns arise over inflated valuations reminiscent of the dot-com era. While there is substantial capital investment in AI, future earnings growth must justify these expenditures. The fund maintains a cautious approach towards perceived beneficiaries of AI, suggesting that select high-quality businesses with reasonable valuations may be better positioned. Historical trends suggest that speculative markets often revert to valuations based on fundamental economic realities, and the chosen investments are believed to be well-prepared for such a shift. The fund underperformed the index in the quarter and returned 5.69% vs. 13.87% for the Russell 1000 Value Index, largely due to a lack of exposure to high-performing sectors like semiconductors, while stock selection in healthcare provided a positive contribution. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund highlighted Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) as a notable contributor. Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) is a US-based health benefits company. On August 31, 2026, Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) closed at $392.54 per share. Over the past month, Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) reported 3.85%, but its shares are up 21.78% over the past year. Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) has a market capitalization of $85.13 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $274.84 to $436.24.
Hotchkis & Wiley Large Cap Fundamental Value Fund stated the following regarding Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE:ELV) is the second largest health insurer, and one of the largest commercial insurers in the United States. Shares rose during the quarter after the company reported quarterly earnings that beat consensus estimates. It was further supported by news that the US agreed to increase 2027 payments for private Medicare Advantage plans above the initial proposal. The company is priced at a discount to the market, driven by skepticism surrounding margins and growth, despite being a superior business that grows above GDP while returning most of its cash to shareholders."
