Ruben Amorim jokingly made the point on Saturday that Manchester United's news conferences are "more boring" now he has left the club.
That is certainly true.
Michael Carrick is simply not willing to court headlines in the same way as Amorim. He is more protective of his players and the harmony he is trying to build at Old Trafford, and knows demands for new players can imply a lack of trust or belief in those he has - and needs.
That is why his "we want more, we need more" statement to the broadcast media last Thursday was so significant.

Dwayne Johnson has joked about getting "free tickets" to the movies now that he's a Disney Legend.
The wrestler-turned-actor was presented with the prestigious honour by his Jungle Cruise co-star, Emily Blunt, at The Disney Legends Award ceremony held in Anaheim, California on Sunday afternoon.
In a heartfelt address, Emily described her friend as a "non-conforming, rule-breaking, mould-breaking rebel".
And taking to the stage, Dwayne delivered an impromptu speech in which he gave a shout-out to his youngest daughters, Jasmine, 10, and eight-year-old Tiana, who were watching at home.
"They asked me, 'What does it mean to be a Disney Legend?'" he smiled, adding jokingly: "I said, 'Well, it means we get free tickets.'"
In addition, Dwayne encouraged the audience to join him in singing happy birthday to his eldest daughter, Simone, who just turned 25.

Max Verstappen is fed up with repeating the same criticism of the 2026 Formula 1 cars time and time again, despite caring deeply about the sport's product.
After finishing on the podium at the Belgian Grand Prix, the Dutchman was asked about the 2026 cars again during the post-race press conference. Then, he jokingly said: "Honestly, I don't want to sit here and complain again because probably someone will shoot me outside the door."
Speaking to GPblog, among others, the former four-time world champion addressed his comment. "No, I was joking about that one. I have spoken my mind about these regulations already for a long time. And in the beginning most people were saying, 'he's complaining, he should shut up.'
"I have to say that the last few races more and more people are seeing the same thing that I could see coming already a long time."
The Red Bull driver continued: "It's not about me not winning anymore, it's just because I care about the product. Because I've said it many, many times. And at one point that's also enough. But of course, when people keep asking, well then, yeah, maybe it's not appreciated always."

s-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Meena and Minal were left as infants at orphanages in India and grew up in ‌different adoptive families in the Netherlands, just a short drive apart. Now, ‌40 years later, a DNA test has shown that the childhood friends are biological sisters.
Growing up, neither was aware that they had a sister. Then, as teenagers in 1996, while living just 100 miles (130 km) apart, they crossed paths at a gathering for adopted children and felt an unusually strong connection.
Their friends were amazed by their likeness and the girls swapped addresses. In ‌correspondence, they jokingly called each other 'sis' before losing touch for 15 years.
"For years, I felt a hole in my heart," said Meena Geltink, 43, a mother of three, struggling to put words to her overwhelming feeling of joy. "It's like a missing puzzle piece has been found."

CHENNAI: If Javagal Srinath had been the match referee when Sourav Ganguly famously kept Steve Waugh waiting for the toss at Eden Gardens in 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the former India captain might well have faced a suspension.

"I would have banned Sourav for a few games!" Srinath said at EEMAGINE event by recalling the incident, which has been regarded as an act of gamesmanship that disturbed Waugh and the Australian team during the course of the famous series that India won 2-1. Ganguly later said that he couldn't find his blazer which led to the delay, but that's highly debatable.

Srinath, however, praised Ganguly's leadership, particularly his ability to nurture youngsters such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag. He felt Indian cricket underwent a major transformation after the match-fixing scandal of the late 1990s, with players developing a collective resolve to restore the game's image.

"There was a bit of a resoluteness in each and every player to really put that image back and then prove the world that cricket is superior, cricket is clean," Srinath said. He added that leadership came from the top four or five players being on the same page, which helped India not only start winning consistently at home but also turn the corner overseas.

Srinath recalled that between 1991 and 1997-98, India struggled to win abroad, but things began changing from 1999 onwards.

Looking back at the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, Srinath revealed that he had wanted India to bat first after a discussion within the team. "I was one of the guys who said we should always bat first and then put them under pressure," he said. But Ganguly had a different view. And once the decision was made, Srinath said the team had to move on, but Australia were simply too strong.

He recalled recommending Zaheer to selector Chandu Borde after watching the left-arm pacer take six wickets against Air India while representing the MRF Pace Foundation. When Borde jokingly asked what would happen to Srinath if Zaheer was picked, his response was simple: "If he's good, he replaces me."

Srinath also revealed that Rahul Dravid was "not the best roommate," joking about the former India batter's habit of leaving things scattered, while describing Venkatesh Prasad as extremely "spick and span".

On Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Srinath cautioned against comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, stressing that different eras bring different challenges.

"When you judge a player it's just not the white ball, it is the red ball cricket as well. Sooryavanshi is a wonderful talent, I think he's still too young. I hope he develops the maturity like Sachin and has that strong head on his shoulders like Virat."

Srinath also called for a better balance between bat and ball, pointing to shorter boundaries, bigger bats and less ***** ounced seams. "Something needs to be done to bring some balance into this game," he said.

A potential return to football for Aaron Donald is becoming more realistic. The retired defensive tackle participated in an official "tryout" with his longtime team, the Los Angeles Rams, on Wednesday, according to the NFL's transaction wire. Rams head coach Sean McVay jokingly described it as the "best tryout we've ever had," and the workout appears to be another step toward Donald ending his retirement.
Should Donald return within the next two weeks, the New Orleans Saints could be among the first teams to see the three-time Defensive Player of the Year back on a football field. The Saints are scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Rams on Aug. 20 before the teams meet in their preseason game at SoFi Stadium on Aug. 22. It is unlikely, though, that Donald would participate in a preseason game, but seeing him in a joint practice is certainly a possibility.
That could create a difficult test for a Saints offensive line that has made improving the running game one of its biggest offseason priorities. Donald would join a loaded Rams defensive front that included reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, a major catalyst in Donald's exploration of returning to the NFL.
Donald, who retired after the 2023 season, recorded 111 career sacks, 176 tackles for loss, and 24 forced fumbles in his 10-year career. He was a 10-time Pro Bowler and an eight-time First-Team All-Pro, and he terrorized the Saints offensive line at some of its strongest points over his decade in the NFL. Even at 35 years old, a return would immediately become one of the NFL's biggest stories — and the Saints might be given the first up-close look.

WNBA All-Star Weekend is nearly two weeks in the rearview, but the virality of the StudBudz's 72-hour Twitch stream knows no bounds. Last year, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert was caught dancing to "Knuck If You Buck," and Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve jokingly blamed AI for her viral dancing clip.
This year, ESPN's Holly Rowe produced the WNBA All-Star clip that will endure.
Rowe was on her usual sideline duty for the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game at the United Center in Chicago on July 25. The Emmy-winning reporter went viral during the game for a walk-and-talk interview gone wrong with Olivia Miles. After the game, she went viral again for dancing to Sheck Wes' "Mo Bamba" in the club.
"You know who was on the stream, though? Your girl, Holly!" Indiana Fever All-Star Aliyah Boston said the latest episode of the Post Moves with Candace Parker & Aliyah Boston podcast. "Big Holly! Big Holly!"
Boston mimicked Rowe's dance moves, while Parker hit the stank face in approval.

Demetrious Johnson hopes Usman Nurmagomedov secures a big bag if he joins the UFC.
Lightweight champion Nurmagomedov (22-0) completed the final fight of his PFL contract when he knocked out Archie Colgan in this past Friday's PFL New York main event at UBS Arena.
During his post-fight interview, Nurmagomedov jokingly confronted Jake Paul about his digs towards UFC fighter pay in wake of PFL's merger with MVP.
"If I was Dana, I would pay Usman Nurmagomedov whatever the f*ck he wants to take him away from the PFL merger because you're stealing a star from their organization," Johnson said on his YouTube channel. "I like the position that Usman is in.
"He's beaten everybody over there, and if he is an athlete that wants to test himself against the best in the lightweight division, I think it would be sick to have him fight in the UFC lightweight division when you've got Justin Gaethje, Ilia Topuria ... there are some good fights over there."

A$AP Rocky recently opened up about how becoming a girl dad to his and partner Rihanna's baby daughter, Rocki, has changed him. The couple also share sons, Riot, 3, and RZA, 4. In a wide-ranging interview, he spoke about his journey as a musician, Rihanna, and their roles as parents.
For the latest episode of BET Networks' "The Jason Lee Show," A$AP Rocky sat down with his longtime friend Jason Lee to speak about how his and Rihanna's baby daughter, Rocki, made him "ultra gentle." Towards the end of the interview, Lee asked the rapper how he loved all of his kids "differently, but not more than the other."
The "Fashion Killa" artist said, "RZA was my first, so by the time Riot was born, I already had to learn how to — not learn, but I naturally just love both of them equally, right? The thing was it was like big brother, little brother." He continued, "By the time Rocki came, it was like, 'Oh snap, this is different because this is a girl, so you got to handle them a little bit differently.'"
A$AP Rocky then revealed, "I'm really sensitive with my kids and really gentle with them, but like with her, I was ultra, ultra gentle." He then jokingly noted, "She turned out being the toughest, more than her brothers. She'll like grab your nose, squeeze it, [and] she takes my braids, yanks it. I'll be like, 'Damn, girl. Why you beating up Daddy for?'"
Elaborating on his relationship with his children, the rapper clarified that he does not have any favorites. "I'm a present dad. I don't favoritize any of them," he said. "They all have such different personalities that you love each of them for what it's worth."

What would you do with $2-5 million?
Buy a reasonably priced home? Not in this market. What about paying off some debt? That's a reasonable idea. Set aside a little to wager on some college football? Could win or lose yourself some money that way. (It is Vegas we're talking about after all.) You could also buy roughly 2 million Mountain Dew Baja Blasts from Taco Bell if you are like me and love the Bell.
But, as one of our recent SB Nation Reacts Surveys will show, plenty of you would use that chunk of change to purchase the UNLV men's basketball team that is TOTALLY NOT FOR SALE if you ask Josh Pastner (again).
Forty percent of voters picked the $2-5 million range, which felt like a low-ball given how that is the going rate for some of college sport's most coveted players. How much can one UNLV men's basketball be worth? Possibly one whole Yaxel Lendeborg, apparently.
Thirty percent picked $10 million and up, which was what UNLV head coach Josh Pastner valued his team at when he jokingly said someone should buy the program, which started this fun hypothetical — one that feels all too possible with private equity and venture capital circling our beloved college sports.

Neymar Sr. said he believes his son could still play in the 2030 World Cup for the Brazilian national team. But Neymar Jr.'s statements have been going against what his father says.
When asked by the press about the end of Neymar's journey with the national team, his father was emphatic: "He said, 'I think for me it's over.' He thinks so. We've just come out of a World Cup, which was difficult for everyone. We're talking about the next World Cup, four years from now. [...] We don't know what tomorrow holds."
The interview took place during the 6th Neymar Jr. Project Institute Auction.
Right afterward, Neymar Jr. was asked about his father's remarks and fired back jokingly: "but he's not the one who plays."
Previously, Neymar Jr. had already made it clear that even retirement at the end of the year is a possibility.

Baseball players have a decent amount of down time during a game, and that can lead to some wild conversations and conspiracies.
But when it comes to baseball conspiracies, Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong came in strong with an objectively preposterous theory.
In a recent appearance on Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, Crow-Armstrong was asked to share an unpopular opinion. And he said — somewhat jokingly — that he didn't think that Babe Ruth actually existed. And he went on to explain that he mainly didn't think this one person could have been a god of the sport given how the game has evolved.
The podcast he was referencing was a 2024 interview with Mariners pitcher Tayler Saucedo. Basically, Saucedo claimed that since he's only seen one video of Ruth, the baseball legend probably never existed. Mind you that Babe Ruth was probably the most photographed person in America at that time. There are still living people who witnessed him play. Like, he objectively existed.

Invoking a wounded innocence that their desire for sports to be simple, just like they used to be, conservatives for a decade and a half have dreaded the word "politics". Now they cannot get enough.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has spent 40 years in the National Football League unknown except for his defensive schemes, but last week opened his press remarks mocking the congressional testimony of Dr Anthony Fauci, jokingly invoking the Fifth Amendment before taking questions. Apropos of nothing, President Trump publicly surmised that LeBron James might be a racist. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is now in the act, accepting the role as the right's anti-Black, anti-transgender culture war ambassador, the role originally intended for Caitlin Clark.
If Clark has lacked the courage and dexterity to say anything beyond the milky and ambiguous, Sophie Cunningham does not suffer from such internal conflicts. Largely anonymous politically or otherwise during her eight-year career, Cunningham – she of the viral finger-point which has been adopted as a symbol of the white animosity toward the WNBA culture – is in her moment. Her comments in a lengthy 21 July ESPN profile stating her opposition to transgender athletes has earned her hero status of the specious "Protect Our Girls" movement, even though you'd need a microscope to find any critical mass of transgender women participating in sports at any level.
Cunningham plays role of the blithe and bubbly iconoclast, oblivious to the world around as she unapologetically speaks her truths, but she is every bit as political as Colin Kaepernick, Megan Rapinoe, or her locked-armed, T-shirt wearing colleagues that defined the WNBA when she first entered the league in 2019. Cunningham forged a tough, take-no-prisoners-without-taking-herself-too-seriously persona, but was too meek to address the toxic roots of her newfound fame.
So too, was ESPN, which waited nearly 75 paragraphs just to sidestep the foundation of Cunningham's rise: she is profiting from cultural fractures that may be good for her but are tearing her league apart:

The Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to contract drama and have balanced perceived financial jealousies before.
And for the record, there is none and will be none with receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.

She might not have got the gold medal she craved, but the Commonwealth Games have been an "amazing" experience for Summer Shaw.
The 22-year-old from Camberley in Surrey claimed Scotland's first judo medal in Glasgow by beating Botho Babutso of Botswana in the bronze-medal match of the 48kg event.
Shaw forced Babutso into submission with an arm lock to win by ippon inside one minute and 32 seconds, but her chances of gold were ended by India's Asmita Dey.
"I'll see her at the Games the next time in four years," Shaw jokingly said to BBC Sport Scotland about Dey. "She beat me on home soil, so I'll beat her on home soil.
"I'm a little disappointed, because I really came here wanting gold. I was number four in the competition, I lost to the number one seed, I was just so close to beating her. But it was so much fun. Just amazing."

Ed Orgeron has never been the kind of coach who disappears quietly. These days, the former LSU national championship coach is spending part of his offseason doing something few expected. But did you ever imagine him reading out fantasy football draft orders for fans on Cameo? Well…
"What's up guys, it's Coach O. Soon-to-be football season. I know we can't wait," Ed Orgeron opened his video with his familiar gravelly growl.
Another clip has him rattling off league names with the same intensity he once had for SEC Saturdays: "Check out these leagues. Jambalaya, Hush Puppies, Po' Boys, Gumbo."
In another clip, Orgeron jokingly predicts, "The old lady, Queen Kelsey, will beat you in fantasy football this year."
These days, Coach O isn't barking into a headset in front of 100,000 people. He's talking straight into a phone camera instead. Birthdays. Fantasy football leagues. Random shoutouts. Fans pay for the videos on Cameo, and lately those fantasy draft-order clips have been making the rounds again. Turns out that gravelly voice still grabs attention.

Cignetti offered a potential reason: "Maybe I'm so cuddly and likable."

Cignetti is apparently slightly more hated than North Carolina's Bill Belichick and Texas Tech's Joey McGuire.

To most sports fans, Will Compton isn’t a household name. He arrived in the NFL as an undrafted free agent and somehow managed to carve out a nice career as a linebacker spanning nine seasons from 2013 to 2021.
Compton only played for three teams: Washington, Tennessee ****** ans, and the Raiders (in both Oakland and Las Vegas). Yet, he managed to start 40 of his 92 appearances. He was also on the New Orleans Saints’ squad but released without playing.
If anything, he’s done more to make a name for himself since retiring from the league (though his playing career no doubt set him up nicely post-retirement). Now, Compton can commonly be heard on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast, which he co-created with Taylor Lewan. Compton has become known for being a bit of a goofball, or in other words, he loves to make light of comical situations.
One of Compton’s recent bits included acting like he was bothered by not being one of the many who received an invite to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s wedding. TMZ ran with Compton’s previous comments, in which he said he jokingly said he was “flabbergasted.”
Of course, TMZ wasn’t alone. Others ran to the printing press too.

Matías Manna is the video ****** yst for the Argentina national team, so the message he sent about an Albiceleste tradition carries even more weight coming from him.
“An asado is better than 20 video sessions,” Manna said last year in an interview with Argentine newspaper Página 12. A former tactics blogger in love with the x’s and o’s of soccer, the Lionel Scaloni ****** istant still recognizes the importance of the human side of the game.
In Argentina, nurturing that human side often includes getting together to eat meat.
Argentina has a tradition of enjoying an asado after every win, which requires a lot of beef - and some chicken, which goalkeeper Emi “Dibu” Martinez jokingly branded “light cows” in a video he posted to social media. Chef Diego Iacovone has 500 kilograms pounds (more than 1,100 pounds) of meat imported from Argentina at his disposal.
As is tradition in Argentina, the various parts of the cow on offer make up a huge part of the discussion. "Today we have sausage, chicken, steak, vacío, ribeye and Anto is going to throw on a skirt steak," Iacovone tells Martinez in the video, referencing chef Antonia Farías. Provoleta, an appetizer of grilled provolone cheese with spices, also is on offer.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's highly anticipated wedding is reportedly becoming even more extravagant, with new details suggesting the celebration may look more like a royal affair than a traditional celebrity ceremony. As speculation surrounding the superstar couple's big day continues to grow, reports claim a massive castle is being constructed inside Madison Square Garden, transforming the iconic New York venue into a fairytale-inspired setting ahead of the rumored July 3 event.
According to TMZ, crews have been working around the clock preparing Madison Square Garden for what is expected to be one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings in recent memory. Construction teams were recently spotted unloading large scenic pieces outside the venue, with some of the equipment reportedly labeled "Garden Party 1 (Scenic)" and marked with the initials "GP."
The reported additions have fueled speculation that the venue is being transformed into an elaborate garden-themed wonderland complete with castle-inspired elements. If the reports are accurate, the setup would fit perfectly with the fairytale narrative that has surrounded Swift and Kelce's relationship since they first went public.
Swift's fans have long been known for decoding hidden messages and Easter eggs, and the reported "Garden Party" labeling has already sparked plenty of theories online.
Some believe the phrase could reference the couple's reported garden-themed engagement, while others have jokingly suggested it may be another clue pointing toward future music from the pop superstar.

One of the most recent messages posted in the chat featured a selfie of the two men, grinning from ear-to-ear as they enjoyed a game of pool together.
Haack then joked that the photo was one of the last things she had expected to receive, captioning the screenshot: "My boyfriend and Heather's husband having a boys night 'offline' wasn't on my bingo card."
