PETOSKEY — There will always be unexpected turns in life.
Nolan Schley has found that out early on, but he's also learned to pivot when life does.
The biggest turn of Schley's life recently came when the then Cheboygan senior had his final season of high school football cut out from under him when the 2026 varsity season was canceled due to low numbers.
"I knew we were going to have low numbers, but then literally the day of, five people quit and put us down to 13," Schley said. "We just didn't have the numbers."
A starter on the varsity since his sophomore year, playing both quarterback and defensive end, Schley and his family made a change with the unexpected news.

PETOSKEY — For anyone who may have heard Jason Yonker was taking over the Petoskey High School soccer program, the name may have sounded pretty familiar.
But, just so the record is straight, Yonker has no relation to Petoskey's longtime boys and girls coach, Zach Jonker. **** ounced the same, it's only in seeing the names that you realize it.
That's been step one for Yonker since taking over the Northmen.
Step two took place on Monday, Aug. 17 at Northmen Stadium, when Yonker finally got to see his team compete against someone else, when Petoskey welcomed Grand Blanc in a scrimmage.
Petoskey, coming off a 6-9-1 season, dropped a 3-2 game against a massive program, while making some impressive plays throughout the 80 minutes.

PETOSKEY — It's easy to forget and skip ahead in years when talking to Petoskey junior quarterback Lukas Nemec.
He's been preparing to be the leader and in that role — with a mature attitude to back it — for so long that you might forget he was only a sophomore starting on varsity for the first time a year ago.
You forget he's in the midst of just his second varsity offseason and with two full seasons ahead.
The second-year quarterback has just gone through an active start to summer and was back with his team Tuesday, July 7 for the first of a month of 7-on-7 action at Northmen Stadium.
"I've been busy, trying to be with my guys and here and there," Nemec said. "It's good to be back in the flow of things and excited for this season. I'm excited to see what we can do."

PETOSKEY — Connor Berg and Jace Shaw see a lot of each other at Petoskey football practices.
With Berg along the offensive line and Shaw rushing off the edge of the defensive line, it makes a lot of sense that the two would be quite familiar with each other by now.
Outside of Petoskey, the two have also been well aquatinted this summer.
Both standout football players entering their senior season with the Northmen, Berg and Shaw have been busy hitting camps all across the state, from Central and Western Michigan, to Ferris State and more.
For both players, getting in front of college coaches on the camp tour has been a fun ride.
