SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 1 - OpenAI has determined that one of its upcoming models is so capable that it requires extra safety layers during its development and eventual release.
The company's internal testing showed that the model, called Astra, is significantly more capable than the most advanced OpenAI model available to the public today, GPT-5.6 Sol, OpenAI officials said on Tuesday.
The ChatGPT maker is continuing to navigate intense safety concerns after OpenAI-created agents broke out of their testing arena and hacked open-source platform Hugging Face. The incident prompted OpenAI to pause much of its model development for two weeks to bolster its defenses.
Astra wasn't involved in the Hugging Face incident, but its capabilities still require more careful measures, OpenAI officials said.

s-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Meena and Minal were left as infants at orphanages in India and grew up in different adoptive families in the Netherlands, just a short drive apart. Now, 40 years later, a DNA test has shown that the childhood friends are biological sisters.
Growing up, neither was aware that they had a sister. Then, as teenagers in 1996, while living just 100 miles (130 km) apart, they crossed paths at a gathering for adopted children and felt an unusually strong connection.
Their friends were amazed by their likeness and the girls swapped addresses. In correspondence, they jokingly called each other 'sis' before losing touch for 15 years.
"For years, I felt a hole in my heart," said Meena Geltink, 43, a mother of three, struggling to put words to her overwhelming feeling of joy. "It's like a missing puzzle piece has been found."

Peru has temporarily suspended the operations of sightseeing airline Aerodiana after one of its planes crashed in the country's Ica region on Saturday, killing 11 European tourists and two crew members.
Aerodiana, which flies customers over the Nazca Lines archaeological site in southern Peru, must suspend all operations "until investigations are completed to verify the company's compliance with the applicable aviation regulations, procedures and operating requirements," Peru's Ministry of Transportation and Communications said Sunday.
CNN has reached out to Aerodiana for comment.
The Peruvian government earlier said that the crew of the small sightseeing plane had reported a mechanical problem before radio contact was lost.

Even a family with ties to one of America's biggest tech companies says it can no longer make the numbers work.
Faced with rising costs for groceries, gas, insurance and housing, a Seattle-area family is selling its home and downsizing as inflation continues to strain household budgets.
"The last year has definitely been an absolute tightening up of what we're spending on," Liesl Gatcheco told The Seattle Times in an article by business reporter Jessica Fu published Tuesday.
"It's very stressful," Gatcheco said. "I feel like I've been living emotionally in survival mode."

CAIRO, July 9 (Reuters) - Gazans turned out in large numbers to pay their respects to a senior Palestinian member of Egypt's main aid organisation who set up World Cup screenings in the shattered enclave and was killed by an Israeli air strike on a taxi he was in this week.
The strike killed Mohammad al-Waheidi on the eve of the Egypt-Argentina match on Tuesday, along with three other people, including two young passers-by, siblings aged 10 and 8, in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, medics said.
Watching the matches on giant screens brought joy to thousands of football fans in the enclave, laid waste by more than two years of war. Palestinians, like many Arabs, cheered for the Egyptian team, which performed strongly before Argentina knocked them out.
"My father worked hard to bring some entertainment to the people, to the displaced, to us and everyone who suffers in Gaza, he tried to bring them the matches close to their tents and wrecked shelters," his son Fawaz told Reuters by phone.
