Trade tensions weighed on the Canadian dollar, which weakened 0.5% to C$1.3836 per dollar, after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, with Canada retaliating in kind.
With the dollar having slid broadly in recent days the euro was trading at $1.1665, down a touch on the day, but in sight of last week's three-month top.
Sterling was likewise marginally softer at $1.3628 but near its six-month high of $1.3675 also hit on Friday. The **** anese yen was a touch weaker at 159.25 per dollar.

Nike stock closed at $40.18 on Monday, a price last seen in 2014 and a level that represents a roughly 78% decline from the record close of $177.51 the shares reached in November 2021, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Nike shares fell 4.1% on the day, reaching an intraday bottom of $38.86 and marking a fresh 52-week low. The shares have shed more than 48% of their value over the past twelve months.
Several forces converged to push Nike stock lower. JPMorgan cut its rating on Nike to Underweight from Neutral, with **** ysts warning that the company's "Win Now" strategic initiatives risk eroding margins and dragging on earnings ahead. PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — New Zealand passed its last examination before the eagerly awaited test series against world champion South Africa when the Bulls were dispatched 50-19 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
The All Blacks dominated to lead 24-0 at halftime and perhaps their first match at altitude contributed to a closer, more back and forth second half.
They still racked up eight tries, with doubles for wingers Josh Moorby and Leroy Carter and captain Codie Taylor, while conceding their first points in more than two hours across the tour matches against the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls.
Only a few of the New Zealand side were expected to line up in the first test next Saturday in Johannesburg, but valuable experience was gained by the wider squad whose depth will be plumbed during the grueling run of four tests on four straight weekends.
The likes of flanker Anton Segner, the returning Taylor and center Rieko Ioane impressed for New Zealand in an expansive, entertaining affair.

Germany's Johannes Liebmann and American Kate Douglass set swimming world records on Saturday, dazzling at events held in Paris and California.
Liebmann, 19, knocked nearly four seconds off the men's 1500m freestyle record as he claimed his first international gold medal at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
He completed the distance in 14 minutes 26.79 seconds - 3.88secs faster than the previous record which was set by American Bobby Finke at the 2024 Olympics, also held in the French capital.
Liebmann became the first swimmer to go under 14:30 for the distance as he slashed the most time off the record since Australia's Grant Hackett in 2001.
Three-time Olympic champion Hackett took more than seven seconds off when he swam 14:34.56 - a record which stood for 10 years.

Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt have reportedly reached an agreement over the transfer of Ellyes Skhiri back to his old Bundesliga club, dramatically reviving a return that appeared to have been abandoned only weeks ago. Sport Bild reports the two Bundesliga clubs have settled the terms of a deal for the 31-year-old midfielder. The remaining obstacle is Skhiri's salary demand. Cologne are reportedly prepared to offer the Tunisia international approximately €1.5m per year. Skhiri currently ranks among Frankfurt's higher earners and has yet to accept the proposed terms.
Get German Football News reported in late July that Skhiri had been granted permission to negotiate a departure from Eintracht Frankfurt. The midfielder was omitted from Adi Hütter's training-camp squad after being informed that he no longer featured prominently in the club's plans. A return to Köln initially appeared one of the most logical solutions. That option subsequently seemed dead, however.
GGFN reported during Köln's pursuit of Wolfsburg midfielder Vinicius Souza that Skhiri was no longer considered an option at the RheinEnergieStadion. Köln had elected to explore alternative solutions for René Wagner's midfield instead. That position was reinforced again only recently when GGFN covered Sevilla's emerging interest in Skhiri. At that stage, Köln were understood to have dropped their pursuit entirely.
Skhiri's return would address an obvious need in Köln's midfield, where Tom Krauß, Ísak Jóhannesson and summer signing Paul Okon-Engstler currently represent Wagner's main central options. The veteran already knows the club exceptionally well. Skhiri joined Köln from Montpellier for approximately €6m in 2019 and developed into one of their most important players. He made 133 competitive appearances for the club and contributed to 28 goals before departing for Frankfurt on a free transfer in 2023.
Skhiri has since made 117 appearances for Eintracht, although his role declined last season. The additions of Raphael Onyedika and Noël Aséko have further reduced his prospects under Hütter. Skhiri also enters the final year of his SGE contract. The RheinMainAdler remain eager to cash in on the 86-times-capped international, who still maintains a €5m estimated market value. Duan Jansen, twin brother of South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen, has earned his maiden senior call-up and could make his international debut during South Africa's upcoming white-ball tour of Namibia.
The 15-member squad, led by experienced spinner Bjorn Fortuin, will play a T20I tri-series involving Namibia and Zimbabwe before taking on Namibia in a historic three-match ODI series.
The T20I tri-series will be played in Windhoek from August 28 to September 6, followed by three ODIs against Namibia from September 9 to 13. The ODI series will be the first bilateral 50-over contest between the two neighbouring countries.
Duan's selection comes after an impressive 2025/26 domestic season. He was named Division 1 One Day Cup Player of the Year and played a key role in helping the ****** ans win the ****** le, scoring an unbeaten 61 in the final against the Lions.
Eathan Bosch is the other uncapped T20I player, while Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann and Nqobani Mokoena have received their first ODI call-ups.

NEW YORK, Aug 3 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks kicked off August on a strong note to send the Dow Industrials to a closing record high, as signs of de-escalating U.S.-Iran tensions pulled down oil prices and Treasury yields in a busy week for earnings and economic data.
Crude prices settled down about 5% after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would take place on Monday, though Iran disputed that talks were planned.
The drop in oil prices helped push U.S. Treasury yields lower, even as market participants continued to gauge the odds of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve should the Iran war continue for a prolonged period.
Communication services was the best performing of the 11 major S&P sectors, climbing 4.3% on the back of gains from Meta Platforms and Alphabet. Energy dropped 1.2% as the worst performer on the session.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Oprah Winfrey says she will close the school for underprivileged girls she set up in South Africa two decades ago at the end of next year.
Winfrey opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007 after being inspired by conversations with former South African President Nelson Mandela about the transformative power of educating girls. He was among the guests at the school's opening ceremony.
Winfrey's charitable foundation ran and funded the school, but it was always part of the agreement that the academy campus near Johannesburg be ultimately handed over to the provincial education department, the academy said.
"The dream was never simply to build a school," Winfrey said in a statement issued by the academy on Wednesday. "It was to invest in the limitless potential of young women. That mission doesn't end with one campus. It continues in every girl whose future can be transformed through education."
The academy said Winfrey's commitment to educating South African girls would continue through an expanded national scholarship program supporting academically talented girls at leading schools across the country.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday officially unveiled the 12 host venues for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, confirming the cities across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia that will stage the 50-over showpiece when it returns to Africa for the first time in 24 years.
The announcement was made during a grand ceremony in Johannesburg, where the ICC also revealed the tournament's official brand identity, 'Three Nations, One Heartbeat', symbolising the shared spirit of optimism, diversity and unity among the three co-hosts.
The 14th edition of the World Cup will feature 57 matches and 14 teams, with eight cities in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe, and Namibia's capital Windhoek selected as host venues.
The tournament marks Africa's first Men's ODI World Cup since the 2003 edition, which was jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya.
ICC chairman Jay Shah described the venue announcement as a major milestone on the road to the global tournament.
"This marks an exciting milestone on the road to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. The unveiling of the host cities and the tournament brand signals the start of a journey that will unite fans around the world and build anticipation for one of our sport's biggest global events," he said.
Shah also highlighted the significance of bringing cricket's flagship ODI tournament back to Africa.

July 22 (Reuters) - Oil prices surpassed $95 per barrel on Wednesday as tensions intensified in the Middle East, pressuring U.S. equities ahead of key Big Tech earnings, while the dollar dipped against other major currencies.
Brent crude prices were last up around 3% and touched their highest in six weeks on concerns about supply disruptions.
That came after four oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to Asia reversed course in the Red Sea following threats of attack from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, dampening hopes that the end to the recent spike in tensions could be imminent.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, while the S&P 500 fell 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped about 0.4%.

July 22 (Reuters) - Oil prices surpassed $95 per barrel on Wednesday as tensions intensified in the Middle East, pressuring U.S. equities ahead of key Big Tech earnings, while the dollar dipped against other major currencies.
Brent crude prices were last up around 3% and touched their highest in six weeks on concerns about supply disruptions.
That came after four oil tankers carrying Saudi crude to Asia reversed course in the Red Sea following threats of attack from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, dampening hopes that the end to the recent spike in tensions could be imminent.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was little changed, while the S&P 500 fell 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped about 0.4%.

African football boss Patrice Motsepe offered an emphatic defence of FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday, portraying him as a devoted steward of the game and friend of the continent.
Infantino has faced growing criticism over FIFA's decision to delay a suspension for United States striker Folarin Balogun at the recently concluded World Cup, as well as the introduction of hydration breaks and the prospect of expanding the men's tournament to 64 teams.
"I like his deep love for football, deep committment for football in the world and support for Africa," Motsepe told journalists in Johannesburg.
Motsepe said the Swiss administrator "had remained loyal" to Africa and played a key role in advancing football across the continent.
"Gianni has played a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for African national teams on the global stage," he said, referring to the increase in Africa's allocation by four direct places and an additional playoff berth. The continent was represented by a record 10 teams at this year's tournament co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

The day before the Tour's first rest stage proved to be a highly charged rollercoaster. As overall leader, Tadej Pogacar chose who would be allowed in the breakaway and who would not, the worn out peloton was ready for the day to be over.
The unbearable heat matched with the speed of both the breakaway and peloton proved every rider was ready to wrap this day up early. From Malemort to Ussel, the hills were calm compared to the intensity of the riders.
At one thrilling point, Tom Pidcock's gears broke on him in the breakaway. After a few swift kicks, the gears were fixed, and he was back with the leaders.
The final breakaway included the likes of Mathieu Van Der Poel, Tobias Johannessen, Tom Pidcock, and Alex Baudin. The peloton nipped at their heels the entire day. So much so, the peloton filled with the leaders, finished 6 seconds behind today's stage winner.
As they approached the final turn, no one would dare challenge MVDP. Sure enough, he held off not only his breakaway group, but the entire peloton as Fillipo Ganna hauled the rest of the cyclists behind him.

Fiji struggled for possession and could not handle England's scrum, maul and defense. Under pressure, Fiji conceded 12 penalties — nine by halftime — and a red card to scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli for lashing out with his boot into the stomach of Ellis Genge.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who played at the World Cup, has died. He was 25.
His death was confirmed by Gayton McKenzie, South Africa's minister of sport, arts and culture, in a statement on Saturday.
"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25," McKenzie posted on X.
"South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters."
Adams helped South Africa reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

They escorted the people to police vans where they were taken away, including a woman and a small child from Malawi. Another man who was apprehended by the marchers told Reuters he was in the country legally.
"I am a ZEP holder," said the Zimbabwean national, Total Mhlanga, referring to the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit which allows tens of thousands of nationals to live and work in South Africa.
In Soweto, anti-immigrant protesters marched through town wielding sticks and flags, with plans to go search for undocumented immigrants. Several of the flyers for Thursday's protests advertised a "peaceful march" followed by "door to door". Another march took place in Durban on the east coast.
