Corey Day's rapid climb through NASCAR isn't slowing down.
Hendrick Motorsports announced Wednesday that it has signed Day to a long-term contract extension, keeping one of the sport's most closely watched young drivers in the organization for years to come. And Hendrick isn't simply bringing him back for another season in NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series.
Day is officially headed to the Cup Series.
The 20-year-old will return to Hendrick's No. 17 Chevrolet for a second full O'Reilly Series season in 2027 while also making his Cup debut with a limited schedule. Hendrick has not yet announced which Cup races Day will run or provided additional details about that program.
It's another major step for a driver who was still learning how to race stock cars on pavement just two years ago.

William Byron has a new problem.
And for once, it has absolutely nothing to do with his race car.
The Hendrick Motorsports star has NASCAR fans wondering whether he has quietly moved on from his previous relationship after appearing alongside social media influencer Kylan Darnell.
The two were spotted together during Byron's recent vacation, with Darnell appearing in a photo Byron posted to Instagram. She also left a couple of very interesting comments on the post.
One simply read, "my fav."

It was a tumultuous night for William Byron at the Darlington Raceway in the Cook Out Southern 500. The driver of the No. 24 was forced to exit the race prematurely in the final stage after his engine expired, resulting in a 37th-place finish.
Byron, who has failed to win in 2026, entered the NASCAR Cup Series Chase 13th in the standings. Following a tough result on Sunday night at Darlington, the Hendrick Motorsports driver finds himself at the bottom of the Chase in the 16th position.
Moments prior to Byron's motor blowing, the North Carolina native triggered a caution after spinning out due to a tire failure.
Byron was having a solid run at "The Track Too Tough to Tame" for most of the evening. The 28-year-old placed ninth in Stage 1 and eighth in Stage 2, aiming to put together a quality run to kick off the Chase. Yet, things were going well until they weren't.
Byron's tire failure happened during the final stage as his Valvoline Chevrolet went sliding through turns 3 and 4, which brought out the caution on Lap 315. On the subsequent restart, Byron suffered an engine failure, forcing him to take his HMS machine behind the wall.

After dropping the opener, the Chattanooga Lookouts evened the Knoxville Smokies' final home series of the regular season with a 5-1 win Sept. 2 at Covenant Health Park.
With the Smokies clinging to a one-run lead in the seventh inning, Lookouts center fielder Austin Hendrick blasted a three-run home run off reliever Marino Santy. It gave the Lookouts their first lead of the series and ruined five scoreless innings from Knoxville starter Brody McCullough.
The Smokies' offense offered little support, managing just four hits and a lone first-inning run.
"It's just a good job by their pitching staff of holding us at bay," Smokies manager Lance Rymel told Knox News. "Just didn't get much going offensively tonight."

The Baltimore Ravens placed 10 rookies on their initial active roster, with eight members of the 2026 draft class joined by undrafted free agents Joe **** nano and Ethan Burke. Baltimore selected 11 players during the 2026 NFL draft. Seventh-round picks Rayshaun Benny and Evan Beerntsen were waived, while fifth-round running back Adam Randall was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return.
The active rookie group includes potential starters, rotational players, developmental prospects and two undrafted players who forced their way onto the team with productive preseason performances.

Jimmie Johnson shared a glimpse of the No. 48 livery for his farewell race at the 2027 Daytona 500.
Johnson recently announced that he has teamed up with Lowe's, Ally, and Carvana to sponsor his sendoff race. Lowe's was his primary sponsor through his seven championships and 83 victories; Ally covered his final seasons in 2019 and 2020, while Carvana sponsored his NASCAR comeback as a team owner and part-time driver.

Kyle Larson would like to see more changes to the NextGen car moving forward. The defending NASCAR Cup Series champion expressed enthusiasm about this Saturday's ****** e Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, which will see a new rules package.
Larson believes the new rules package could be a game-changer in the type of racing seen at "The World Center of Racing." However, the driver of the No. 5 also is not sure it will make a difference.
Regardless, "Yung Money" supports the change and hopes to see more adjustments to the NextGen car in the future.
During a media session on Friday at Daytona, Larson said he is looking forward to trying something new in Saturday's ****** e Zero Sugar 400.

The Rochester Red Wings continued their postseason push Friday night, rallying from an early two-run deficit to beat the Buffalo Bisons 5-3 at ESL Ballpark and move into a tie for first place in the International League's second-half standings.
Rochester improved to 79-49 and pulled even with Indianapolis atop the International League's second-half race thanks to a four-run fourth inning fueled by doubles from Cayden Wallace and Liover Peguero. Chandler Champlain earned the win with 4.1 innings of relief before Yovanny Cruz recorded his fifth save.
The Bisons broke through in the top of the fourth inning after Yohendrick Piñango singled and scored on Jay Harry's RBI double. Harry later came home on Lenyn Sosa's RBI single, giving Buffalo a 2-0 lead.
Starter Isaac Lyon was charged with both runs, with Champlain entering in relief to record the final out of the inning.
The Red Wings responded immediately in the bottom half.

It's a new year for Bob Chesney and Colin Hitschler but the two coaches remain together, with Hitschler following Chesney from James Madison to California to join the UCLA Bruins. While it's a new roster, conference and program, there's a few things that remain the same.
One of those things being Trent Hendrick, who joined UCLA over the weekend. Hendrick won the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year award under Hitschler last year and more success could be headed their way in 2026.
Hitschler spoke to the media on Tuesday after practice and talked about the new addition at linebacker.
"We had a lot of fun together last year and I think he did a great job where he was. I'm glad he got the opportunity for himself to hopefully continue to play college football here," Hitschler said. "What a special opportunity for him. Let's make the most of it."
One of the main things to watch for UCLA football this season is how Hitschler's defense will fare in the Big Ten. UCLA allowed the fourth-most yards per game last season in the Big Ten and had the worst scoring defense in the conference, allowing 33.4 points per game.

The Rochester Red Wings erased an early two-run deficit, but the Buffalo Bisons broke a tie with a four-run sixth inning and held on for a 6-3 victory Tuesday night at ESL Ballpark. Rochester finished with six hits, while Buffalo collected eight.
The loss dropped the Red Wings to 76-49, while Buffalo improved to 63-63. Grant Rogers earned the win for the Bisons, and Matt Krook was charged with the loss.
The Bisons wasted little time getting on the board in the opening inning. Rudy Martin Jr. walked and Jay Harry followed with a single before Sean Keys brought home the game's first run on a groundout. Yohendrick Piñango then lined an RBI single to center to score Harry and give Buffalo a 2-0 lead.
Rochester starter Zak Kent settled in afterward, allowing two runs over 2⅓ innings before Andry Lara delivered 2⅔ scoreless innings of relief to keep the game within reach.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the most chaotic of all the combat sports.
Because there are so many potential avenues to victory, there are an equal number of ways to suddenly lose everything. Each weekend, at least one fighter with all the advantages on paper will instead taste defeat in violent fashion. Denying that disorder is what makes an extensive win streak or dominant ***** le reign so impressive. Controlling chaos is the name of the game, and it's why we expect our greatest of all time (GOAT) candidates to be untouchable.
Think about prime Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, or Georges St. Pierre: they didn't have close fights very often. Each of them spent about a decade thoroughly dominating their field, rarely looking hurt or tired as they outclassed the opposition. There are notable exceptions for each man, but that's why they were notable! Their true battles against the respective likes of Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Johnny Hendricks were all shocking at the time, rare moments where this pantheon of greats looked like mortal humans.
Islam Makhachev, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished UFC fighters of all time. Last night at UFC 330, he broke Silva's record for longest win streak, and he did so in the first ***** le defense of his second divisional championship. Even more impressively, he did so against a larger opponent with top-notch skills and great tactics.
He has the resume of an all-time great, which makes it exceptionally interesting that Makhachev is on the verge of losing surprisingly often.

NASCAR is performing a deeper inspection process after the Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway this weekend. Chase Elliott's No. 9 car for Hendrick Motorsports has been taken to the NASCAR R&D Center for further inspection after Richmond, the sport announced. Elliott finished in fifth place on Saturday night.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver has struggled over the last few months and finally earned another top-5 finish at Richmond. NASCAR taking Elliott's No. 9 car to the R&D Center doesn't automatically mean something is wrong; however, it does heighten the risk of a potential penalty.
In the NextGen car era, drivers and teams have received significant penalties when NASCAR takes a car to the R&D Center. There have been several occasions when they have lost over 100 points due to an infraction. Most cars are cleared after going to the R&D Center, but exceptions exist.
Elliott will likely be OK; however, NASCAR has blasted teams in the past for any wrongdoing.

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Kyle Larson just had one of the most ridiculous nights in motorsports history.
Larson started 30th in Saturday night's NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway and drove an ill-handling Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet all the way to sixth, gaining 24 positions over 400 laps.
For most drivers, that would have been enough.
Larson wasn't most drivers.
Instead of heading home after Richmond, Larson embarked on a frantic cross-country sprint to Knoxville, Iowa, where he was scheduled to start on the pole for the 65th Knoxville Nationals. A three-hour rain delay at Knoxvilel and a fast jet gave him a chance to make the impossible happen.

On Friday evening of July 31 — exactly 29 days before the 2026 college football season kicks off — game-changing news came out of the U.S. District Court of Colorado. The court ruling by Judge Charlotte Sweeney granted a preliminary injunction that requires the NCAA to provide an additional year of eligibility to all athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year.
The ruling aligns with the Protect College Sports Act, a bill currently on the Senate floor which proposes a 5-year eligibility window for all student-athletes. However, before this dramatically shakes up collegiate rosters during fall camp, the ruling is expected to be appealed by the NCAA per a memo issued by NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby.
After Friday's news, graduated players from across the country expressed interest in returning to college football. The Sun Belt Conference had several of its stars express interest, per On3 Sports' Pete Nakos, including former James Madison inside linebacker Trent Hendrick and ULM defensive end Kevontay Wells. The NCAA cannot bar players from entering the transfer portal per Sweeney's ruling, so affected players have the option to return to their schools or transfer elsewhere.

Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Shemar Stewart needed a cart to leave the field during the team's first training camp practice after suffering an apparent injury.
According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Stewart suffered what appeared to be a knee injury before he left the field on a cart with trainers.
Stewart, the Bengals' first-round pick in 2025, had enjoyed a normal buildup to his second season before this point. That, after the post-draft contract standoff with the team and multiple nagging injuries never let him find his footing as a rookie.
The Bengals spent big on defensive end this offseason to insulate a struggling spot. With Trey Hendrickson and Joseph Ossai gone, the front office signed Boye Mafe in free agency and drafted Cashius Howell, pairing them with first-round products Stewart and Myles Murphy.
Stewart, thanks to his athleticism and ability to play multiple spots, is a key part of the plan for Al Golden's defense. In the past, cart rides at camp have been a precaution even for cramps, so it remains to be seen how severe Stewart's apparent setback is.

In the 4th, the offense would add 5 more runs on a Biggio 2 run single, Ferreras sac fly and Loperfido 2 run home run. Hendrickson got the start and pitched well allowing 2 runs over 5.2 innings with 7 strikeouts. The bullpen was solid tossing 3.1 scoreless innings as they closed out the 9-2 win.

Shane Bieber melted down, which cost the Jays a chance to win but probably more importantly derailed a string of solid starts that had hopefully been pushing his trade value back up. Also, Vladimir Guerrero jr. left the game before the bottom of the fourth after legging out an infield single and throwing error in the third. It was later reported to be a right hamstring injury. So a good day all around.
We got a fun moment before the game as Louis Varland and his brother Gus, recently recalled from AAA by the Nationals, got to do the lineup card exchange.
There was an hour long rain delay before we could get going tonight. Cade Cavalli didn't look bothered, but it looked like the delay really threw Shane Bieber. He couldn't get any of his pitches across, missing badly all over the plate. After the Jays were retired in the first with just a Nathan Lukes single erased by a Vladimir Guerrero jr. double play ball, Bieber walked two the first three Washington hitters. Then CJ Abrams reached on an infield ground ball when Bieber couldn't find the bag while recieving Luis Urias' toss, loading the bases with just one out. Walks to Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile forced in a pair of runs. A Nasim Nunez sac fly plated Abrams to make it 3-0. Then another walk, to Jorbit Vivas, re-loaded the bases, and a sixth, to Jacob Young, pushed yet another run across. That was enough for the Jays, who called for Brendon Little. He got a ground out to finally end the inning.
The Jays had a chance in the second, with George Springer walking and Ernie Clement lining a single, but they failed to capitalize. Little returned for the bottom half and struck out the side.
Toronto got on board in the third. Yohendrick Pinango walked with one out, but was traded for Lukes on a fielder's choice. The speed upgrade mattered, as Vlad hit a slow roller to third and Vivas's throw to first went wide, allowing Lukes to come all the way around to score, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Little kept dealing, getting a ground out and a strikeout among the first two batters. Nunez reached when Ernie Clement bobbled a soft chopper to third, but Brandon Valenzuela gunned him down stealing second with a beautiful throw.

When the Baltimore Ravens take the field for training camp, one player will draw more attention than almost anyone else: newly acquired edge rusher Trey Hendrickson.
After the Ravens missed out on trading for Maxx Crosby when a failed physical sent the star pass rusher back to the Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore quickly pivoted and landed one of the NFL's premier defensive playmakers. Now, expectations are high for Hendrickson as he prepares for his first season in purple and black.
The veteran edge defender enters camp looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2025 campaign that limited him to just seven games. While the shortened season slowed his production, it did little to diminish his reputation as one of football's most relentless pass rushers.
Just one season earlier, Hendrickson reminded the league why he is considered an elite defender. During the 2024 campaign, he led the NFL with 17.5 sacks while generating 65 quarterback pressures, consistently disrupting opposing offenses and changing games with his ability to collapse the pocket.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a good problem most teams would take. They have two young corners worthy of re-signing for a second contract.
DJ Turner (a second-round pick in the 2023 draft) and Dax Hill (a first-round selection from the 2022 draft) are both quality starters. Especially Turner, who has received the underrated tag pretty frequently this offseason.
However, it is still a problem when you need to re-sign them. The Bengals have been spending quite a bit, and while they could re-sign both players. The team would be left without the wiggle room it usually would like to have.
We've seen players like Trey Hendrickson, Jessie Bates, and Ja'Marr Chase all skip out on portions of training camp while entering the last years of their respective contracts. The Bengals aren't expecting that this time around.
"When you draft guys like that that come in and find roles and elevate their game and elevate the people around them. Those are guys you want to be around," Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin said of the cornerback duo. "And I'm not going to make any predictions about future contracts. We have everyone signed up right now, which is really good. It's a good feeling. I think everyone is locked in on the season, and we'll see what the future holds. But right now, our focus is winning and winning now."

Jaelan Phillips was already going to be shouldering a heavy load for the Carolina Panthers defense this year. The four-year, $120 million contract he signed in March was the biggest for player in free agency—even more than former sack champion Trey Hendrickson got from the Baltimore Ravens.
And now, after Thursday's news revealed that fellow starting outside linebacker Nic Scourton would miss the entire 2026 season due to an ACL tear, the pressure is even greater.
From Phillips' perspective, he's focused on turning his high pressure rate into more sacks. Here's what he told NFL Network national reporter Cameron Wolfe after the opening session of training camp:
Phillips entered the 2025 campaign with a career high of 8.5 sacks, which he posted during his rookie season in 2021. Last year, he managed just 5.0 while playing a full 17-game slate between the Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Alex Bowman's surprise retirement announcement caught much of the NASCAR world off guard Thursday, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver says the decision wasn't driven by the reason many fans ***** umed.
Speaking Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one day after announcing he will retire from full-time Cup Series competition following the 2027 season, Bowman explained that his future plans are centered less on what he's leaving behind and more on the life he wants to build once he's steps away from racing.
Despite battling concussions, a broken back and, more recently, a bout of vertigo earlier this season, Bowman said his health wasn't the deciding factor.
Instead, after nearly two decades chasing a racing career, he's ready for something different.
Bowman acknowledged the physical toll racing has taken but made it clear he still believes he can compete at NASCAR's highest level.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR driver Alex Bowman will retire from full-time racing following the 2027 season.
Bowman, who had been in the final year of his contract at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports, signed a one-year extension before announcing his future plans on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Bowman missed four races earlier this season because of vertigo and also was sidelined in 2022 because of a concussion and the following year because of a back injury. He drives the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick and currently sits 29th in points, well below the 16-driver cutline for the postseason.
"I've spent a lot of time thinking about what's next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time," Bowman said. "The sport asks a lot of you, and I've learned it's important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself."

Alex Bowman isn't done driving just yet, but he'll be calling it quits on his NASCAR career soon.
Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday, July 23, that Bowman has signed a one-year extension to continue driving the No. 48 Chevrolet but will retire from full-time racing after the 2027 season.
The 33-year-old Bowman has been a full-time driver in the top-level Cup Series since 2014, but has just one victory in the last four seasons and missed four races earlier this year because of vertigo. He also missed three races in 2023 because of a fractured vertebra and five races in 2022 after suffering a concussion.
"Alex has meant so much to our organization for a long time," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He's overcome adversity, won big races and represented our team and partners with professionalism, personality and class. Alex is a tremendous talent in the race car and an even better person outside of it. We're proud he'll have the opportunity to finish his full-time career with us on his terms. He's family."
A native of Tucson, Arizona, Bowman has eight victories across 371 Cup Series races and holds the record for most consecutive starts on the front row of the Daytona 500 with six. He won the pole at the Super Bowl of stockcar racing three times in his career.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR driver Alex Bowman will retire from full-time racing following the 2027 season.
Bowman, who had been in the final year of his contract at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports, signed a one-year extension before announcing his future plans on Thursday.
The 33-year-old Bowman missed four races earlier this season because of vertigo and also was sidelined in 2022 because of a concussion and the following year because of a back injury. He drives the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick and currently sits 29th in points, well below the 16-driver cutline for the postseason.
"I've spent a lot of time thinking about what's next, and this feels like the right decision at the right time," Bowman said. "The sport asks a lot of you, and I've learned it's important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself. ...
