Jaelan Phillips was already going to be shouldering a heavy load for the Carolina Panthers defense this year. The four-year, $120 million contract he signed in March was the biggest for player in free agency—even more than former sack champion Trey Hendrickson got from the Baltimore Ravens.
And now, after Thursday's news revealed that fellow starting outside linebacker Nic Scourton would miss the entire 2026 season due to an ACL tear, the pressure is even greater.
From Phillips' perspective, he's focused on turning his high pressure rate into more sacks. Here's what he told NFL Network national reporter Cameron Wolfe after the opening session of training camp:
Phillips entered the 2025 campaign with a career high of 8.5 sacks, which he posted during his rookie season in 2021. Last year, he managed just 5.0 while playing a full 17-game slate between the Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The under-the-hood numbers, however, tell a bit of a different story. Phillips tallied 76 pressures in 2025, tied for the ninth-most in the league.

As their latest free agency addition, the Houston Rockets announced the signing of 22-year-old forward Julian Phillips. At 6-foot-8 and 201 pounds, Phillips is well regarded for his elite athleticism and 7-foot-1 wing span.
Following one collegiate season at Tennessee, Phillips was the No. 35 overall pick by Boston in the 2023 NBA draft. From there, he spent his first two-and-a-half seasons with Chicago before being acquired by Minnesota via a February trade.
In 167 career games with seven starts, Phillips has averaged 11.4 points (43.5% FG, 32.0% on 3-pointers), 4.9 rebounds, 1.2 ****** ists, 1.3 steals, and 1.6 made 3-pointers per 36 minutes. He has also appeared in 12 G League games, averaging 19.0 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 41.4% from 3-point range.
At the 2023 NBA draft combine, Phillips recorded the highest standing vertical leap (36.0 inches) and the best max vertical leap (43.0 inches) of any participant. He was a McDonald's All-American in 2022.
Between Tuesday and Friday, the Rockets officially added Isaiah Crawford, Jae'Sean Tate, Oscar Tshiebwe, and now Phillips to their 2026-27 offseason roster. All will be evaluated during the team's upcoming training camp, which begins in late September.

Commodity traders are having the rug pulled out from under one of their biggest paydays yet as refiners start bypassing oil and traders and buying Venezuelan crude directly, according to Reuters. Refiners and major oil-producing firms are rapidly gaining market share in Venezuelan crude by locking in direct supply contracts with state-run Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), bypassing the global middlemen and commodity trading houses such as Trafigura and Vitol that previously dominated the ***** e.
Six months after traders reopened Venezuela's oil market, Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) and India's Reliance Industries have already signed direct supply agreements, with Valero (NYSE:VLO) and Thailand's Tipco expected to follow.
Previously, Vitol and Trafigura enjoyed first-mover advantage, managing to become dominant in Venezuelan crude marketing because of their exclusive U.S. government licenses, pre-existing logistical infrastructure and historical ties to PDVSA. Following major political shifts in Venezuela in January, the U.S. administration brokered a deal to manage and sell the country's oil. The U.S. Department of the Treasury issued special, long-term licenses specifically to Vitol and Trafigura until June 2027, effectively giving the traders a temporary monopoly. The pair collectively moved more than 100 million barrels of crude over a six-month period while other global firms remained legally locked out.
Their unmatched logistics also gave them a clear upper hand. After all, global trading houses have the fleet capacity and global reach to quickly deploy tankers and reroute large volumes of crude. They could absorb massive storage and shipping costs in a difficult market, using floating storage facilities in places like Malaysia to break up bulk shipments. When the ongoing war in Iran disrupted Middle Eastern supply chains, Vitol and Trafigura quickly diverted heavy Venezuelan grades like Merey 16 to major Asian refining hubs in India, South Korea, and Malaysia at narrower discounts.

Georgia Bulldogs running back Dante Dowdell was hospitalized after he was in an ATV accident this offseason. Dowdell's recovery is expected to take a significant period of time after he suffered "some serious injuries" in the accident.
Dowdell had a promising spring and was expected to be one of Georgia's top running backs this fall. Dowdell started his college football career at Oregon, transferred to Nebraska and then transferred to Kentucky. Last season, he posted 560 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound running back was expected to take over Josh McCray's role at a minimum.

There was a time when every conversation about the Philadelphia Eagles' pass rush centered on who they didn't have. Should they trade for a superstar? Would they pursue another expensive veteran? Could they survive without adding one more marquee edge rusher? This time around, Howie Roseman answered those questions differently.
Rather than chasing headlines, the Eagles quietly **** embled one of the NFL's deeper edge rotations. Jonathan Greenard arrived via trade, giving Philadelphia another proven starter capable of making an immediate impact. Free-agent additions Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa weren't splashy acquisitions, but both represent the type of low-risk, high-upside moves Roseman has built his reputation on.
Add former first-round pick Nolan Smith, emerging pass rusher Jalyx Hunt and rookie Keyshawn James-Newby, and suddenly the Eagles have no shortage of intriguing options. That's before mentioning Joshua Weru, the undrafted rookie whose athletic upside makes him a fascinating long-term developmental project despite his limited football experience.
Philadelphia's approach says a great deal about how the organization views pass rushing. The Eagles didn't need one player to replace Jaelan Phillips, but this might be a room capable of creating relentless pressure over four quarters.
But take that thought a tad further. They may have found an upgrade for Phillips anyway. If Greenard stays healthy, there's every reason to believe he could become an even better fit than Phillips was because of his versatility and experience within multiple defensive fronts.

The New Orleans Saints saw one of their NFC South rivals significantly weakened on the defensive side on Thursday. Carolina Panthers edge rusher Nic Scourton suffered an ACL injury during practice with the team on Thursday and will miss the entire 2026 NFL season. This was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. The Athletic's Joseph Person observed Scourton being carted off during team drills at Panthers practice on Thursday. Trainers were focused on Scourton's right knee. Later in the day, it was determined that Scourton had suffered an ACL tear that will cost him his entire season.
After earning a first team All-SEC selection in 2024 with the Texas A&M Aggies, Scourton was drafted 51st overall in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Scourton tied for the 2025 Panthers team lead with 5 sacks as a rookie. He had 15 pressures and 9 QB hits while adding a forced fumble and 7 tackles for loss among his 47 total stops. In two games against the Saints last season, Scourton had 1.5 sacks and 5 QB pressures. New Orleans won both games. However, the Panthers would win the NFC South with an 8-9 record before going on to lose to the Los Angeles Rams, 34-31, in the first round of the NFL playoffs.
Carolina finished 2025 ranked 16th in total defense. Scourton's loss thins out a pass rush that had just 30 total sacks last season. The Panthers signed Jaelan Phillips in free agency this offseason to team with Scourton in hopes of improving that pass rush. Princely Umanmielen, a third round choice in the 2025 NFL Draft, is the favorite to take Scourton's place in the lineup.
New Orleans faces the Panthers at home on Nov. 15 and at Carolina on Dec. 13. The Saints have a potentially strong tackle duo in Kelvin Banks Jr and Taliese Fuaga. More bad news for a Panthers squad hoping for a repeat division ***** le might help New Orleans' chances. Either way, this unfortunate injury for Scourton is a good reminder of how quickly plans can fall apart in such a physical sport.

One day into training camp, and the Panthers have lost their first casualty for the season, and it was their promising young 2025 2nd round pick, EDGE Nic Scourton. Scourton appeared primed to have a big role on this front seven opposite Jaelen Phillips, but we're going to have to wait til 2027 as Scourton went down with what appeared to be a severe knee injury early in the day. Speculation was it was very serious due to how he and the players around him reacted, and sure enough, its a torn ACL. Horrible news for the Panthers, sending best wishes to Nic on a speedy and healthy recovery.
Running back Jonathon Brooks practiced in training camp for the first time in his career (shout-out to Mike Kaye for that factoid). While I know many fans have been skeptical of his health, he appears primed to have a significant role in the offense if this direction continues.
The Panthers have officially announced rookie first round pick Monroe Freeling will be starting at right tackle to start the year given the medical issue keeping Taylor Moton out. Initially, Freeling was set to enter a competition with Rasheed Walker at left tackle, but the team quickly created a new plan for Moton's absence.
Dave Canales said OL Brady Christensen "looked good" in his first training camp action back with the team. Christensen is coming off a torn Achilles last season, but he may be needed sooner than later if the Panthers injury luck continues.

A major Texas Longhorns recruit is suiting up to play for them a year early. Five-star cornerback John Meredith is reclassifying from 2027 to 2026, head coach Steve Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. That means he will be playing for next season's Longhorns.
"I'm more than ready. Looking forward to getting to campus and am ready to compete," Meredith said to Hayes Fawcett of On3. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound corner is ranked as the No. 2 corner and No. 12 prospect in the nation.
Part of this comes from his high school status. He tried transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley, but the District 11-6A executive committee ruled him ineligible to play his senior season. The ruling allows him to play a season early.
The Longhorns are expected to start a relatively young secondary after corner Jahdae Barron was drafted in the first round. Sophomores Graceson Littleton and Kade Phillips are expected to take big roles in the secondary, and Brad Spencer and Jelani McDonald are the only seniors in the secondary.
It makes all the sense for Meredith, who could have NFL potential, and he gets to train with a Texas staff that just developed Barron. "He provides great length, great speed, tremendous man-to-man ability," Sarkisian said at SEC Media Days. "Very confident, very aggressive. All the attributes you want in a defensive back… It's not a secret why he was a top two or three player in the country in the 2027 class. We'll see how far we can take him."

A group of former Tigers have wrapped up their summer in Sin City.
Five players who finished their college careers with Missouri basketball saw playing time in the NBA Summer League, which ran July 9-19 in Las Vegas. The event is an opportunity for players to compete for free agent deals for the upcoming season.
Mark Mitchell played for the Denver Nuggets after signing an Exhibit 10 deal, Tamar Bates is on a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz, Sean East II was with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jevon Porter featured for the Memphis Grizzlies and Caleb Grill played for the Boston Celtics.
Ex-Tigers Trevon Brazile and John Tonje, who each spent a season in Columbia in their college careers, played for the Nuggets and Celtics, respectively.

More than half a century has elapsed since the last big exhibition of work by Richard Dadd, the Victorian one-off who murdered his father while in his 20s and spent the rest of his life painting in psychiatric institutions. The most famous of his seemingly psychedelic compositions is The Fairy-Feller's Master-Stroke (1855-64), an airless, intricate and profoundly eccentric picture swarming with supernatural creatures, each apparently no bigger than a blade of grass. Surely it's the product of a fevered brain?
Richard Dadd: Beyond Bedlam, at the Royal Academy of Arts, invites us to consider its subject afresh, not as a lunatic who happened to paint but as a first-rate artist who lived with mental illness (probably schizophrenia), a little like Vincent van Gogh. Although, on this evidence, his folkloric paintings can appear obscure, as well as multitudinous and hallucinatory, the originality of his vision reinforces the show's premise. This exhibition may be weird, but it's certainly compelling.
Despite Dadd's medical history, it would be wrong to categorise him as an "outsider" artist. He was born in Kent in 1817, his mother died when he was a child, then, at the age of 19, he entered the Royal Academy Schools, a move emphasised (unsurprisingly, given its setting) by this exhibition's dull opening room. If Dadd's mature art appears technically accomplished and steeped in art history – I have a hunch that an odd watercolour of 1852 depicting Robin Hood craftily alludes to The Archers (1769-70) by Sir Joshua Reynolds now in Tate Britain – that's because he was trained, as well as talented.
After winning acclaim for some early Shakespearean fairy pictures, including one of a corpulent, malevolent-looking Puck sitting cross-legged on a fungus beneath a foxglove like a dripping shower head, Dadd was invited, in 1842, to accompany Thomas Phillips, a Welsh lawyer and politician, on a trip around the eastern Mediterranean. Over-stimulated by this grand tour, Dadd began suffering delusions. On his return to London, he became convinced that his father was a devil and killed him with a knife. A year later, he was admitted to Bethlem and remained there for two decades before being transferred to Broadmoor Hospital, where he would eventually die from tuberculosis, in 1886.
During his time as a patient, medical attitudes to mental illness started to shift. In 1854, Dadd produced Agony – Raving Madness, a watercolour of a manacled, half-naked, evidently tormented patient clutching at his head. Yet, Dadd's doctors wanted physical coercion to become a thing of the past. They allowed him to draw and paint as he wished, and even commissioned him to do so; exceptionally, at Broadmoor, they also provided him with carpentry tools, so that he could build his own idiosyncratic wooden picture frames (two of which appear at the Royal Academy).

Around 90 to 100 million barrels of crude oil are still stuck in the region. This is because there isn't enough room to store more oil. As a result, it will take a long time for the supply bottleneck to clear.

Following an impressive spring and a transition to a defensive scheme that better aligns with his skill set, the team is optimistic that he will evolve into an every-down playmaker capable of consistently delivering double-digit sacks.
Kenneth Grant (Defensive Tackle): Following a promising rookie season in which he finished strong, the 2025 13th overall pick is expected to build on that momentum and anchor the interior of the defensive line for years to come. The new defensive scheme should better allow him to fill or fire through gaps, rather than more often being fodder for a double team.
Jordan Phillips (Defensive Tackle): Phillips, a 5th-round pick last year, had a solid rookie year as a rotational player, playing all 17 games and recording 34 tackles, including 1 for a loss.

Harris Oakmark recently released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Oakmark Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. On July 13, 2026, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) closed at $112.85 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $137.48 billion. ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) posted a one-month return of 1.36%, while its shares gained 21.93% over the past 52 weeks.
Oakmark Fund stated the following regarding ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) was the top detractor during the quarter. The U.S.-headquartered oil and gas exploration and production company's stock declined as crude prices, which had risen on Middle East disruptions, eased. Positively, the company's underlying fundamentals continue to track our expectations. We value management's focus on shareholder returns and see a long runway for growth from the company's geographically diverse and inventory-deep energy portfolio."

A group of longtime Dr. Phillips Little League softball teammates have won the Florida state championship.
Many of the senior players have competed together since they were 5 or 6 years old. Nearly a decade later, the team advanced uncontested through district play and went undefeated at sectionals before capturing the state ***** le.
The team is coached by former Major League Baseball All-Star Rickie Weeks.
Players will continue practicing and fundraising before leaving July 22 for regional competition in Tennessee.

Tennessee will kick off its sixth football season under Josh Heupel on Sept. 5 at Neyland Stadium. The Vols will host Furman at 3:30 p.m. EDT (SEC Network+).
Tennessee enters fall training camp with four quarterbacks on roster: early enrollee freshman Brandon Faizon, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, redshirt freshman Mason Phillips and redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub from Colorado.
MacIntyre appeared in two contests as a freshman in 2025. He played against East Tennessee State and New Mexico State. The 6-foot-6, 208-pound signal-caller completed 7-of-9 passing attempts for 69 yards. His longest completion was 17 yards.
Phillips made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter against East Tennessee State on Sept. 6, 2025. He recorded 18 rushing yards on two attempts. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound quarterback's longest rushing attempt was 16 yards.
Staub played three seasons at Colorado from 2023-25. He appeared in 12 games for the Buffaloes and completed 53-of-98 passing attempts for 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound quarterback started in two games: at Houston on Sept. 12, 2025 and at Utah on Nov. 25, 2023.

The New York Yankees head into the MLB All-Star break with one of the better pitching staffs in Major League Baseball, and it could soon get even stronger. Despite opening the season without Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, and later losing last year’s ace, Max Fried, to the injured list, the Yankees have remained one of baseball’s top teams on the mound. Rodón also returned to the injured list a couple of weeks ago, creating even more uncertainty. Now, however, there is finally some encouraging news.

According to reporter Gary Phillips, manager Aaron Boone said Max Fried’s live batting practice session on Saturday went extremely well. The next step in Fried’s recovery is expected to be a minor league rehab ***** ignment, which Boone indicated could begin as soon as Friday.
That’s a significant development for the Yankees, who have eagerly awaited the return of one of their top starters. If Fried gets through his rehab outing without any setbacks, he could be back in the major league rotation before long.
The update on Carlos Rodón wasn’t quite as advanced, but it was still positive. Boone said Rodón has strung together several productive throwing sessions and is expected to throw almost every day during the All-Star break.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: A lot of the big headlines to come out of Brian Cashman's media availability on Thursday were around the status and recovery of Aaron Judge and his rib injury. Also during that availability, Cashman noted that the performances the Yankees have gotten from the catcher position this season have been an issue. While he emphasized that he's looking to improve themselves in total as opposed to putting all the eggs in one position's basket, he acknowledged that catcher has become an unexpected area of concern.
The Trentonian | Greg Johnson: One annual event during the All-Star Game weekend festivities is the Futures Game played between some of the top prospects from around baseball. The Yankees were set to be represented in this year's event by shortstop George Lombard Jr. and pitcher Carlos Lagrange. However, both have been ruled out with injury. In their place, the Yankees will now send pitcher Ben Grable, an 11th-round pick from Indiana last year who is now in the Somerset Patriots' bullpen. He's much lower in the Yankees' prospect pecking order, but is having a nice 2026 season.

A couple Yankees gave a bit of credit to a pregame speech from Jazz Chisholm Jr. ahead of that game. Jazz then played a big role in last night's win over the Nationals, so it's been a nice couple days for him.
Netflix: Ben Rice's competition in the 2026 Home Run Derby is set for Monday night. Barring any late substitutions, he will face Junior Caminero of the Rays, Jac Caglianone of the Royals, Jordan Walker of the Cardinals, Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox, Willson Contreras of the Red Sox, and two host sluggers: Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper of the Phillies. Caminero and Schwarber were runners-up in the 2025 and 2018 events, respectively, while Harper was the winner in 2018, the last time he competed in one with the Nationals. Rice will be looking to become the fifth Yankee to win the event, alongside Tino Martinez (1997), Jason Giambi (2002), Robinson Canó (2011), and Aaron Judge (2017).

Nine weeks from Sunday, the Carolina Panthers will play their first game of the 2026 season—hosting Caleb Williams, Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears at Bank of America Stadium.
Thus will begin the next chapter in the Panthers' story, which will likely be defined by how much their defense improves compared to last season. Specifically, Carolina splurged in free agency in an effort to improve a long-dormant pass rush. If those investments pay off, this could be a dangerous sleeper team in the NFC.
The biggest x-factor in this department is outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips, who will be making his debut for the Panthers after signing a massive four-year, $120 million deal in March. Matt Okada at NFL.com has named Phillips' first game in Carolina as one of the most anticipated debuts around the league in Week 1.
Okada writes:
I highlighted the need for the Panthers to improve their pass rush all the way back in February, and they checked that box right at the start of free agency. By Next Gen Stats' count, Phillips racked up a healthy total of 63 pressures in 2025, including 21 quick pressures (within 2.5 seconds). The former Dolphins and Eagles edge rusher was Gregg Rosenthal's No. 2 overall free agent and could have a significant impact on the entire Carolina defense...

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has long forced ***** istant coaches on his head coach.
In 2007, Jones hired Jason Garrett for an unnamed position while he hunted for a head coach. Garrett wasn't hired as head coach but instead became the offensive coordinator for Wade Phillips. Jones has made several other ***** istant coach hirings himself since.
So, it should come as no surprise that Jones guaranteed Brian Schottenheimer a job regardless of what happened in the Cowboys' head coaching search in 2025. Schottenheimer had an "agreement" to remain with the team as offensive coordinator if the team didn't hire him as head coach.
"So, what we did is while they were going through the process -- 'cause there's a process, right? I wasn't sure, and there was a number of other teams -- saying this very humbly -- that were courting me and trying to say, 'Hey, we want you to come be our coordinator,'" Schottenheimer said on The Twins Take podcast. "And so, you know, after just talking it over with Stephen [Jones] and Jerry, like, OK, while we figure this out and you guys go through the interview process, which there's a thorough interview process you have to go through. We had made an agreement that I would stay here no matter what. And I didn't want to leave. ... I really wanted to be the head coach and put our fingerprint, our blueprint on it. And that's what God had planned."
The Cowboys did not have an eye on some of the hot offensive ***** istants that offseason, bypassing Ben Johnson and Liam Coen, among others, to interview Leslie Frazier, Robert Saleh and Kellen Moore. Moore likely wanted to call plays himself. Saleh and Frazier are defensive coordinators.
