ALLEN PARK — Twenty-five years have passed, and Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell still vividly recalls the feelings of being loved yet helpless and confused.
At that time, he was the starting tight end for the New York Giants when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks occurred. Like the rest of the nation, Campbell struggled to cope with the aftermath, experiencing a profound sense of grief. However, in just a few days, Campbell felt as though he had witnessed both the worst and the best of humanity.
"It's something you never forget. In the middle of a tragedy — especially in New York, where they're in a hurry. That happened, and everybody pitched in to help. They just wanted to help and do whatever it takes," Campbell said. "Anybody who was up there at that time, even wanting to go help, to get into the city after that, that took a lot just to get up there. It definitely pulled our country together, and it was one of those things you just don't ever forget. There was a lot of loss. Those things you don't forget, and I can't believe it's been 25 years."

Days after the attacks, Campbell — along with many of his teammates — visited Ground Zero and was accompanied by the New York Jets.

Pete Davidson is remembering his late father, Scott Davidson, as the United States marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks.
The comedian was only a child when Scott, a New York City firefighter, died while responding to an attack. More than two decades later, he continues to honor his dad while acknowledging how difficult the anniversary is for him.
This year, however, Pete Davidson is channeling that grief into something positive by encouraging Americans to perform acts of kindness in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Pete Davidson marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11 by honoring the father he lost that day. The comedian joined 9/11 Day's UNIITE For Good campaign, turning grief into a call for kindness.
Davidson's father, Scott Davidson, died while responding to the attacks in New York City. This year, Pete encouraged Americans to remember the tragedy by reviving the spirit of unity that followed.
Davidson shared his story in a video for 9/11 Day. "He was a firefighter for Ladder 118, Engine 205 in Brooklyn Heights," he said. "My dad loved being a fireman, and he loved saving people," Davidson added. Scott died while responding to the attacks alongside fellow firefighters.
The Saturday Night Live alum explained why UNIITE For Good felt fitting this year. "9/11 is usually a tough day," Davidson said, according to the campaign. He explained that participants could perform a good deed and pass the idea along. The campaign then added those pledges to a nationwide map.
The goal was to cover the country with visible examples of people helping others. Davidson hoped the initiative could make an emotionally difficult anniversary feel slightly lighter. The campaign also focused on what happened after September 11. Communities came together and helped strangers despite their differences.

Megyn Kelly wants to see Erika Kirk step away from her role running Turning Point USA — because she wants the grieving mother of two to find time to heal.
Kelly shared her concern with Piers Morgan on the latter's Piers Morgan Uncensored, as the two discussed the one year anniversary of Charlie Kirk's ***** assination at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Morgan brought up a recent essay on grief Erika Kirk, 37, wrote last week for The New York Times:
PIERS MORGAN: And the reason I found it so powerful was it reminded us that there is a human being here, a wife and a mother who lost her husband, who she was obviously very in love with, the loving father of her kids and I think people have just treated her like some weird commodity for the last year.
Where they can say whatever they want about her. They can make any allegations about her. They can treat her as inhumanely as they like. And I'm just at a loss as to understand why? Why we have collectively, it seems, lost our humanity about this woman.

Kate Beckinsale is speaking openly about how PTSD can affect people even when their struggles are not visible to others.
The actress shared a pair of Instagram videos on September 2 in which she discussed the toll trauma can take on sleep, daily life and relationships. Her comments came after she had also been reflecting publicly on grief following the death of her mother, Judy Loe.

Dolly Parton's sister has shared an emotional tribute in the wake of her death.
Freida Parton took to social media to express her grief over the passing of her "Dolly Momma".
"Thank you all for bearing with me as I mourn the death of my big sister," Frieda, 69, posted to Facebook on Saturday, before going on to explain that Dolly, 11 years her senior, had been a mother figure to her.
"I know to the entire world, she was a superstar, but to me, she was my Dolly Momma," Freida wrote. "She was the sister who would climb into bed with me when I was little because we were both afraid of the dark. She was the woman who stepped up and became my Momma, raising me from ages 13 to 18."
She added Dolly, famous for her love of wigs and hairpieces, had attempted, unsuccessfully, to persuade her to follow the same route, writing, "She was the one who tried to convince me to wear her wigs at my shows in Dollywood (sorry, sister, but I definitely didn't listen to you on that one)."
Freida was candid about the sisterly fights she and Dolly had shared.

Grief isn't the only thing losing a spouse triggers. You also have to make some big financial decisions, including whether to keep on with your Social Security retirement benefit or switch to a spousal benefit. You probably want to maximize your income, but there's no single strategy that works best for everyone.
Making the correct call between a retirement and a survivor benefit depends on understanding exactly how each benefit works. Here's what you need to know.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
A Social Security retirement benefit is the benefit you qualify for based on your own work history. The more money you've paid Social Security payroll taxes on throughout your career, the larger your retirement benefit will be.
Married people might get a spousal benefit if they didn't work long enough to qualify for a retirement benefit on their own, or if the spousal benefit, worth up to one-half of the benefit their partner qualified for at their full retirement age (FRA), is larger than their own retirement benefit. But you cannot claim a spousal benefit once your partner has died.

When someone you love dies, one common piece of advice is to not make any major decision within six months. Your brain may be clouded by grief and sadness, so it can be difficult to be rational. This can include decisions about giving up your job.
Not everyone follows this advice, though, and there are times when a death may spur you to take an action you should have taken anyway but may have been frightened about. The death drives home the point that life is short, so you shouldn't wait.

Princess Diana's younger brother reportedly penned his latest book to uncover a major truth about her. The memoir will mark the first time the 9th Earl Spencer has spoken openly and at length about his late sister. Born just three years apart, Diana and her brother Charles Spencer shared a deeply protective, intertwined bond forged in childhood at Althorp House.
In a personal new memoir, Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer confronts what he describes as long-standing falsehoods about her life, marriage, and death. As reported by RadarOnline, Spencer will release the book, Swan Song, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the late Princess' death at age 36 in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.
The memoir traces their early years, Diana's turbulent 15-year marriage to now-King Charles, and the aftermath after her passing, when an outpouring of public grief swept Britain. Speaking exclusively to the outlet, a publishing insider said, "[Spencer] feels that three decades of books, documentaries and commentary have allowed certain claims about Diana to harden into accepted history."
The source noted that Spencer "had a uniquely close view of her life" and thus he "believes this is his opportunity to put his own account permanently on the record – including what she endured during her marriage and what happened after she died." According to the insider, "His intention is to finally set the record straight about what he sees as the truth about his sister's life."
Meanwhile, 62-year-old Earl had shared, "With the 30th anniversary of Diana's tragic death on the skyline, I've been inundated yet again with requests for interviews about my sister. This has convinced me to write down my own thoughts and memories, once and for all, rather than having the discomfort of again reading the opinions of others, many of which are based on untruths that have become accepted over time."

Sandra Bullock is opening up about a side of grief that many people experience but rarely discuss: mourning someone before they are gone.
Bryan Randall, her longtime partner, died on August 5, 2023, at age 57 after a private three-year battle with ALS, a progressive disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for muscle movement.
But according to Bullock, the hardest goodbye did not happen on the day he died. It began years earlier, when she was still sharing life with him while slowly losing pieces of the person she knew.
Randall was a photographer and former model who began dating Bullock in 2015. His family later confirmed that he chose to keep his ALS diagnosis private, and Bullock honored that decision.
What she has chosen to share now is not about revealing details of his illness. It is about explaining what it feels like to lose someone in stages.

Hayden Panettiere's death this week, just five days before her 37th birthday, marks the latest tragic end for a child star. In recent months, Panettiere had become more transparent about the trauma, including **** ual exploitation, she endured as a young actress. The timing of her death is tragic both in light of her age and how recently she appeared to have been winning her fight against addiction. Her efforts to reclaim her autonomy should be acknowledged for what she overcame — and for what fame does to child stars.
Panettiere began appearing in commercials at just 11 months old; by age 5, she'd been in 50. Her breakout role came at age 10, playing a coach's spirited daughter in "Remember the **** ans." Her multiseason portrayals of an indestructible cheerleader on the television series "Heroes" and a troubled country music star on ABC's "Nashville" made her a cultural fixture to millennials.
For decades, the autonomy, safety and happiness of child stars were not a priority for insatiable audiences nor the Hollywood industrial complex. If Panettiere's accounts are any guide, they still aren't.
Off set, however, Panettiere struggled at basically every turn: with an onerous mother, from whom Panettiere was estranged for much of her adult life; drug addiction; alcoholism; depression; and multiple rehab stints. She had relationships with men 10 or more years older than her. She was plied with pills at 15, she revealed this year. Her child custody battle was just one of many traumas dissected in tabloid headlines.
This spring, Panettiere published a memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," that is equal parts appalling and utterly sympathy-inducing. Panettiere bared all, describing her "shortcomings as a mother," her refusal to "blame" anyone else and her grief "for all the hours lost to addiction." The media campaign for the book pulled no punches. Panettiere gave audiences the one thing she refused to further compromise: truth.

When a famous person dies unexpectedly, people who enjoyed their work often feel the loss deeply. The news of Hayden Panettiere's death at 36 has particularly hit manymillennials who grew up watching her performances in way that can be hard to articulate.
Therapists and mental health experts say that reaction is completely understandable, and it says something meaningful about the generation that grew up with her.
Buzz: Heartfelt Tributes Flood In Following Death Of Hayden Panettiere At 36
"I hear this from clients all the time ― that there is this confusion about why they're crying over someone they've never even met," Gina Moffa, a grief therapist and author of "Moving On Doesn't Mean Letting Go: A Modern Guide to Navigating Loss," told HuffPost. "We have all felt it at some point with a favorite public figure. And what I say is this: Your brain doesn't actually care whether the relationship was mutual. It bonds with what's familiar, what's constant, what's shown up for you again and again, even if that showing up only ever went one direction over a TV screen or a radio."
The clinical term that helps explain what many people are feeling right now is a parasocial relationship ― a one-sided bond that the brain forms with a public figure through repeated exposure. But experts say the term doesn't entirely capture what these connections actually feel like from the inside.
