Each time a WNBA opponent makes hard contact with Caitlin Clark , a familiar sequence of events typically follows. Over the past few weeks that sequence has consisted of a missed whistle, a viral clip, a wave of outrage, a quiet league review, followed by an outpouring of commentary from coaches, teammates, broadcasters, and fans insisting that the sport's most visible player must be protected. And while the implicit instinct behind some of that chorus is largely understandable, and in many cases may be sincere, the language used often unknowingly relies on sentiments and language that perpetuate decades of harmful stereotypes about women athletes.
Specifically, what we are seeing as people attempt to protect Cailtin Clark is the harmful framing of women athletes as either fragile and in need of protection, while simultaneously characterizing other's as too physical and classless. The outcome of these storylines is also increasingly becoming harmful to the growth of the sport. Given that women's professional sport continues to grow at historic rates, it is unfortunate that one of the biggest storylines is being told through a frame that is reviving harmful stereotypes about women athletes.

The most recent example of protection came on June 24, when Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas pressed a closed fist into Clark's neck during a scramble for a loose ball and drew no whistle. The league reviewed the play the next day, upgraded it to a Flagrant 2, and suspended Thomas for one game . In the hours between, Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White described the no-calls as "absolutely unacceptable," "egregious," and "utterly disrespectful," and accused WNBA officials of failing to safeguard a "generational talent." It was not the first such moment. Given that women's professional sport continues to grow at historic rates, it is unfortunate that one of the biggest storylines is being told through a frame that is reviving harmful stereotypes about women athletes.

On Thursday, the WNBA said that it will not rescind Caitlin Clark's technical foul from Monday's Indiana Fever win over the Phoenix Mercury.
The Fever had appealed the technical foul with the league's offices. Clark will remain at five technical fouls on the season, three away from a mandatory one-game suspension.
Clark exited the Fever's 111-109 loss against the Mercury on Wednesday night with a back injury and did not return. That puts Clark's status into limbo for the Fever's Saturday date against the Los Angeles Sparks inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers just won 19 games. They lost a lot, often consecutively. And yet they enter the offseason as contending hopefuls, and for good reasons.
Across the last three NBA postseasons, the Pacers are the only team that has beaten the New York Knicks – the current NBA Champions – in a series. Tyrese Haliburton has yet to lose a best-of-seven set that he finishes healthy. Indiana was a playoff force in 2024 and 2025, and with Haliburton returning from injury next season they hope to be one again in 2027.
“We feel like we have a team [that]… We’re in that [contention] mix when we’re healthy,” Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan said earlier in the offseason.
A starting lineup of Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith, Pascal Siakam, and Ivica Zubac projects to be quite good. The Pacers still have some questions to answer about their depth, but after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals twice in a row, with one of those runs leading to Game 7 of the NBA Finals, Indiana is hopeful to be a contender again in 2026-27.

Roe Lach took on her new role in the fall of 2025 after five years as commissioner of the Horizon League and more than a decade overall with the conference. She also serves as chair of the board of directors of Indiana Sports Corp and is a board member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches **** ociation.
Roe Lach got her start in sports playing basketball at a young age and is a member of the Millikin University Athletics Hall of Fame.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – There is still a game to go, but Dikembe Shaw already sounded nostalgic about Indiana All-Star week on Friday night.
