Venture debt lending in Europe is on track to reach a new record by the end of this year, but capital is flowing into a dwindling pool of recipients.
Europe's venture ecosystem has become increasingly concentrated, and the same trend is taking place in the debt market. More than €21 billion (about $24 billion) has been invested over the course of the year, according to PitchBook data, and 2026 is on track for its best annual total on record.
At the current pace, total debt value is projected to reach around 60% higher than last year.

Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) and Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) are both popular stocks among income investors. They're both midstream pipeline companies that are well-insulated from volatile commodity prices because they simply charge downstream and upstream "tolls" to use their infrastructure. As long as those resources keep flowing through their pipelines, they can generate plenty of cash to fund their big distributions.
Energy Transfer, which operates more than 140,000 miles of pipeline across 44 states, pays a forward yield of 6.3%. Enterprise, which operates over 50,000 miles of pipeline across 27 states, pays a forward yield of 5.6%. Both companies have historically spent only about half of their distributable cash flow (DCF) on distributions, so they can easily cover those yields.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) gets a dedicated path to capacity in a grid-constrained market. Natural gas can provide round-the-clock generation that complements intermittent renewables and supports the reliability AI clusters require. A two-decade contract can also give developers confidence to finance construction. The bull case is simple: Microsoft protects its cloud growth by solving power locally instead of waiting years for transmission expansion.
Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) gains a new outlet for its gas and an opportunity to move downstream into integrated power. If Kilby works, Chevron can replicate a model that converts energy resources and project expertise into long-duration data-center cash flows. Yet the project has not reached a final investment decision. Construction, permitting, fuel costs, emissions rules, and customer requirements can all change the economics before power begins flowing.
Those uncertainties create bear cases for both companies. Microsoft is committing to an energy pathway as AI hardware and efficiency evolve rapidly, and a long contract can become less attractive if power markets change. Chevron and its partners must commit capital years before the **** et is operational while managing construction, fuel-cost and carbon-policy risks. Gas solves the reliability problem, but it may intensify political and regulatory scrutiny around AI's environmental footprint. The critical milestones are final investment approval, permitting, construction costs, and data showing that the first power date remains achievable. Until those arrive, the agreement secures intent rather than operating supply.

Investors added $27.2 billion to US-listed ETFs during the week ending Friday, Aug. 28, pushing year-to-date inflows to $1.38 trillion.

International equity ETFs led the way with $9.1 billion, followed by US fixed income ETFs with $8.6 billion. US equity ETFs took in a relatively modest $2.3 billion, less even than the $2.5 billion that went into currency funds.

The backdrop was a firmer stock market and a softer bond market. The S&P 500 rose about 1% last week, while the 10-year Treasury yield ticked a few basis points higher. On Monday it climbed further, reaching as much as 4.77%, its highest level since January 2025.

Judging by the flows, ETF investors have been treating those higher yields as a buying opportunity.
At the individual fund level, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) led with $11.4 billion, lifting its year-to-date haul to a whopping $106 billion. The Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) followed with $2.7 billion.

Meanwhile, both the AI trade and the debasement trade remained in play, with $1.6 billion flowing into the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) and $1.2 billion into the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT).

Satellite images from Thursday to Saturday morning suggest that ‌water in the lake – straddling the China-Nepal border at the confluence of two rivers – has been slowly flowing through, decreasing the reservoir gradually, state broadcaster CCTV reported citing the Water Resources Ministry.
The ministry said satellite imagery of the surface area of the lake at Purepu Tsangpo river showed it was 99,000 sqm in size on early Saturday morning – around the size of 14 football fields combined – having shrunk by 21,000 sqm compared with images from Thursday.
A glacier collapse on Wednesday sending a powerful torrent of rock, ‌ice, mud and debris through Himalayan ⁠mountain river systems swept away a border port complex linking China's Tibet to Nepal, killing hundreds and leaving thousands missing.
Experts and authorities have warned of the extremely high risk of ⁠secondary disasters in the valley, especially from the lake that was formed by glacier debris, potentially endangering rescue operations downstream.

On August 19, The TJX Companies (NYSE:TJX) reported second-quarter results that beat its own plan, even though its largest division could not keep pace with the rest of the business. Consolidated comparable sales rose 4%, adjusted earnings per share climbed 11% to $1.22, and management raised its full-year profit outlook. The catch is that Marmaxx, the TJ Maxx and Marshalls business that generates the bulk of TJX's revenue, grew comparable sales just 1%. Everything else in the portfolio ran hot enough to cover for it.
HomeGoods was the standout, with comparable sales jumping 7% on a higher average basket and more shoppers walking through the door at both the HomeGoods and Homesense banners. Segment profit margin there widened 240 basis points to 12.4%, helped by top-line growth and lower tariff costs. Management pointed to a year-round gifting push at HomeGoods as a way to keep the home category relevant between major holidays. TJX Canada and TJX International were just as strong, posting comparable sales growth of 6% and 7%. International margin expanded 210 basis points to 7.3% on a constant currency basis, and executives described customer response to the company's second TK Maxx store in Spain in glowing terms.
Behind all of it sits a sourcing network of roughly 21,000 vendors that management says keeps merchandise flowing faster than the company can buy it. That confidence showed up in TJX's growth plans: the company lifted its long-term store target by 500 locations to 7,500 and said it will accelerate new store openings to a 4% pace starting next year. Shareholders also got $1.3 billion back in the quarter, split between $798 million in buybacks and $529 million in dividends.
Marmaxx is where the story gets complicated. Comparable sales rose just 1%, entirely from a bigger average basket, while the number of transactions actually slipped. CEO Ernie Herrman was direct about the cause, saying the company "could have executed our store mix better" by not always having the right goods in the right stores at the right time. Segment profit margin held flat at 14.2%, and adjusted SG&A crept up 20 basis points companywide on higher store wage and payroll costs.
Management expects added pressure into the third quarter, pointing to higher fuel rates in the back half that are set to weigh on gross margin. Freight costs carry their own separate strain too, tied to a shrinking pool of new truck drivers entering the industry. Third quarter earnings guidance reflects some of that caution, with adjusted EPS projected at just $1.30 to $1.32, only 2% to 3% growth versus a year earlier. Inventory also grew faster than the store base, up 7% year over year heading into the fall and holiday season, meaning the company is betting heavily that Marmaxx's self-inflicted problems get fixed before that merchandise needs to move.

The Washington Commanders will play their third preseason game on Friday evening against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. It's a mere hop, skip, and jump away from where the Commanders play in Landover, so while it's an away game, there's very little travel involved.
Ahead of their Friday evening preseason game, the Commanders and Ravens held a joint practice, and it wasn't pretty for the burgundy and gold. Most of the practice was dominated by the Ravens, save for the end of the day when the Commanders seemed to figure things out. After practice, right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. spoke with reporters about the day.

Trump's "economic D-Day" against Iran is built around one of Washington's most powerful weapons: access to the U.S. financial system. The problem is that the deeper Washington pushes into Iran's remaining trade, the bigger the targets become.
China buys more than 80% of Iran's seaborne crude. Iraq relies on Iranian gas for as much as 40% of its electricity generation. Turkey imported 4.5 bcm of Iranian gas in the first half of this year, while India still maintains a heavily one-sided trade relationship with Tehran. The UAE, once one of Iran's most important commercial and financial conduits, has already suspended dealings with Tehran.
The U.S. Treasury can sanction tankers, traders and small Chinese refiners without creating much collateral damage outside the Iranian trade. Going after the major banks financing that commerce is different, however. The same is true of forcing Baghdad to choose between complying with Washington and keeping Iranian gas flowing to Iraqi power stations.
The Trump administration took a cautious approach on Monday. Its first round targeted nearly 60 individuals, companies and vessels and expanded sanctions across shipping, aviation, technology, gold and digital ***** ets, but left China's major banks untouched.
That leaves the most powerful part of Trump's threat still hanging over Iran's trading partners. If the first round fails to cut Iranian commerce sufficiently, Washington can move from sanctioning the networks built to evade U.S. restrictions to targeting the banks and companies that still have substantial business to lose in the United States.

It's college football's week 0, and while we've still got some time before the Bulldogs kick off, the news from elsewhere is flowing free and fast. Let's take a quick spin around and see what's up.
Alabama has named sophomore Keelon Russell its starting quarterback over senior Austin Mack. It isn't a surprising outcome, as the former five star would eventually take over. But Bama fans are super stoked nonetheless.
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel on the other hand hasn't named a starter, but appears to be leaning toward freshman Faizon Brandon.Heupel has been saying all the right things publicly about going with the QB who brings the right mix of maturity and leadership to the role. But deep down I think there's something else at play: in the NIL era you can't bring in a multi-million dollar blue chipper like Brandon and afford to sit them on the bench. It's one reason I think Kirby Smart's emphasis on rewarding proven upperclassmen may be the smartest strategy in the NIL era.
Lane Kiffin on the other hand isn't so stoked about his tight end rotation, which is why he's apparently beating the bushes of the NFL for players who are on pro rosters but could come back to college now that a judge in Colorado has decided players in the 2022 class should have a fifth year of eligibility.
Though the buried lede in this story has to be that Kiffin apparently called Todd Monken to talk about whether he could have Monken's rookie tight end, and Monken didn't return his call. That goes on the long list of reasons I like Todd Monken.

A newly obtained police report is providing more detail about the scene where The Challenge alum Tyler Duckworth was found dead on Aug. 11. The 44-year-old reality TV veteran was discovered in the bathroom of his Grand Forks, North Dakota, apartment after residents downstairs reported water leaking through their ceiling.
According to Page Six, which obtained a Grand Forks Police Department case report, Duckworth's body was found against the bathroom door while water from an overflowing bathtub was reaching the apartment below. The person who called for help reportedly tried to get the water shut off and was unable to determine whether Duckworth was alive.
TMZ reported that investigators found no outward signs of trauma, including gunshot or stab wounds, and that the preliminary investigation did not point to homicide.
Duckworth's official cause of death remains undetermined while authorities await final forensic findings. Police have said there were no apparent signs of foul play or other circumstances at the scene suggesting a suspicious death.
Police were called to Duckworth's apartment at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 11 after downstairs residents noticed water coming through their ceiling.

More than the goals, the midfielder's individual displays have helped ***** nal to put in a couple of flowing team performances.
The combinations between Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Ben White on the right-hand-side against Coventry were a reminder of the kind of football the trio can produce at their best.

Our Get German Football News 2026/27 Bundesliga Tactical Previews series continues with a look at VfB Stuttgart. Oh, Stuttgart. You adorable little red-striped menace. There was a time, not particularly long ago, when the author could approach the VfB section of these previews with a reassuringly familiar collection of questions. Who left? Who needs replacing? How much of Sebastian Hoeneß' latest carefully constructed football machine has the transfer market carried away in several large sacks? Last summer, amid approximately 546,789 Nick Woltemade stories and enough aborted transfer sagas to shorten one's life expectancy, the author eventually concluded that Stuttgart possessed a talented upper-table side but were "plainly NOT ***** le contenders". They responded by finishing fourth and qualifying for the Champions League again. So much for that.
Perhaps one should simply accept what Stuttgart have become. Hoeneß took over a relegation candidate in 2023 and somehow turned the whole operation into one of German football's most reliably entertaining success stories. The Pokal arrived. European football kept arriving. Champions League qualification has now arrived twice. At some point, the cute little comeback story stopped being cute because it kept happening. Unfortunately for everyone else, the club itself remains rather adorable. It helps that Stuttgart possess Deniz Undav, German football's resident clown prince and a man apparently determined to turn every mixed-zone interview into open-mic night. Keep him forever. Always give him a microphone afterward.
In previous summers, Hoeneß' principal task was figuring out how to replace what success had taken away. This time, most of the good stuff is still sitting right there in front of him. The largest tactical problem currently confronting the coach may simply be explaining to several very good professional footballers why eleven remains the maximum number permitted on the pitch. How terribly sad for him.
The author shall now inspect Hoeneß' overflowing toy box and attempt to work out how all the pieces fit.
The pleasant novelty here is that the personnel section does not begin with an autopsy. Stuttgart have retained the spine, secured Undav, and then spent aggressively to make an already strong squad even deeper. That does not mean the summer has been simple. Nübel's departure creates a goalkeeper succession, Pejcinovic and Sauer immediately alter attacking hierarchies, Prömel places pressure on the captain, and late interest in Demirovic and El Khannouss threatens to complicate what otherwise looks like unusually tidy work. Before Hoeneß can begin solving his luxury problems on the pitch, it is worth establishing exactly how many of them the transfer market has created.

For most of Andrei Iosivas' NFL career, there has been something to prove: Prove that a wide receiver from Princeton could play in the NFL; prove that a sixth-round draft pick belonged on the field with Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins; and prove that his rare combination of size and athleticism could translate into production against NFL defensive backs.
Three years into his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Iosivas doesn't sound particularly interested in proving anything anymore. And that may be the best indication yet of how far he's come.
"I just feel like I am flowing and I am playing," Iosivas said in a recent interview. "I'm happy about the way I approach the days. I've been focusing on how I walk into the building, how I get out to practice, and whatever happens, happens."
That's quite a change from the player Cincinnati selected with the 206th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Iosivas arrived in Cincinnati as one of the more intriguing developmental prospects in that draft class. At 6-foot-3 and around 210 pounds, he had the physical traits, but he was making the jump from Ivy League football at Princeton to an offense featuring Joe Burrow, Chase and Higgins.
He has spent the past three seasons showing that he belongs. Iosivas played in 16 games as a rookie and caught 15 passes for 116 yards. Four of those 15 receptions went for touchdowns. His role grew substantially in 2024, when he caught 36 passes for 479 yards and six touchdowns. He followed that with 33 receptions for 435 yards and two scores in 2025.
