Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday pulled out of negotiations with Olympique Lyonnais to sign veteran left-back Nicolás Tagliafico before the summer transfer window shut.
Atlético's interest in Argentina international Tagliafico first came to us via David Medina and Isaac Suárez in Marca. Atlético were seeking a backup for Alejandro Grimaldo after long negotiations for Racing Santander teenager Jorge Salinas fell apart Tuesday; Salinas is staying at Racing after no club paid his €16 million release clause.
Tagliafico had been in negotiations to join Juventus before Atlético entered the race. According to Fabrizio Romano **** ociate Matteo Moretto, Tagliafico spoke directly to Diego Simeone and prioritized a move to Atleti, having accepted his role would be as a substitute. To make room for Tagliafico and his roughly €3 million gross salary, Mateu Alemany had to clear **** e in the squad by finding new destinations for multiple players, including Josema Giménez, Thomas Lemar, Carlos Martín and Obed Vargas.
While the sporting director moved out Giménez and Lemar on deadline day, Vargas and Carlos Martín stayed. Sky Germany, Sport Bild and The Athletic all report that Leeds entered concrete negotiations with Frankfurt on Tuesday. The development comes just two days after another proposed move to England collapsed. Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea for the campaign.
Mudryk is set to cross the capital and sign for Spurs on a season-long agreement, as the Ukraine winger looks to revive his career.
The 25-year-old was freed to return to football earlier last month after a four-year suspension was overturned. He had been suspended since November 2024 after a banned substance was found in a drugs test but denied any intentional wrongdoing. According to multiple reports out of Italy and Spain on Monday, Juventus at Atlético Madrid have agreed to a season-long loan deal for David. It ends a 12-month period in Turin in which David's struggles were vastly superior to good moments he showed under Igor Tudor and then especially Luciano Spalletti. David, who arrived on a free transfer from Lille and was subsequently handed a contract by former sporting chief Damien Comolli that made him one of the highest earners on the team, will now head to Atléti in hopes of following the same kind of path that Gonzalez did during the 2025-26 season. But as we found out with Nico, it doesn't necessarily equate to Atlético Madrid actually activating the buy option that they will have in the deal.
Said buy option is around €25 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. There are apparently no set clauses worked into the deal — it is very much a loan with option to buy situation.
