Freiburg were firmly in control at the break against Borussia Mönchengladbach after first-half goals from Yannik Engelhardt and Igor Matanovic.
Matanovic caused Gladbach problems almost immediately, dispossessing Ko Itakura, before having an opportunity to release Yuito Suzuki inside the opening minutes, only to struggle to get the ball out of his feet.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 23rd minute, when Derry Scherhant's corner found Engelhardt, whose looping header caught Moritz Nicolas in no man's land and dropped into the net.
Six minutes later, Freiburg doubled their advantage, with Matthias Ginter firing a sharp pass towards Matanovic on the edge of the penalty area and, with plenty of pace already on the ball, the striker simply guided it beyond Nicolas and in off the post.
At that point, Gladbach were in danger of being overwhelmed as Freiburg threatened to turn an already commanding first half into a rout.

BERLIN (AP) — The Swiss federal intelligence service on Thursday published a 200-page dossier on the notorious ******* war criminal Josef Mengele, the German doctor known as the "Angel of Death" for conducting horrific medical experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz.
During World War II, Mengele served at the Auschwitz extermination camp in ******* -occupied Poland, where about 1.1 million people were killed, approximately 1 million of them Jews. He became infamous for carrying out brutal medical experiments on inmates, including children, under the guise of scientific research.
After the war, Mengele obtained a Red Cross travel document under a false identity, allowing him to leave Europe. Like many former ******* officials, he spent years in hiding in Latin America while being pursued internationally for his crimes. He drowned in 1979 while swimming on the coast of Brazil.
The documents released by Swiss authorities include material provided to police suggesting that Mengele may have returned to Switzerland after initially fleeing Germany, or may have been planning to enter the country under a false name, according to the German news agency dpa.
Historians seeking to establish whether Mengele spent time in Switzerland while being pursued as a war criminal, without Swiss authorities catching him, had long sought access to the files.

News that Cathy Engelbert will step down as WNBA commissioner at the end of the 2026 season sent shockwaves through the league on Friday, Sept. 4.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Engelbert's decision to retire at the end of the year, bringing her polarizing seven-year tenure that saw exponential growth and increased scrutiny to a close. Engelbert helped oversee a transformational collective barging agreement earlier this spring, her second at the helm of the W since becoming the league's first commissioner in 2019.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," Silver said in a statement. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."
Silver wasn't the only voice in basketball to comment on the news. WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike and WNBPA executive director Terri Carmichael Jackson both chimed in following Engelbert's retirement announcement.
Here's are their reactions:

The history books will be kinder to Cathy Engelbert than this last year was as WNBA commissioner.
Six expansion teams. An international market. A landmark media rights deal. Exploding TV viewership and arena attendance numbers. Team valuations topping out at $1 billion and averaging $460 million.
Then there's the league's first $1 million player salaries and a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) based on revenue-sharing, marking the second "transformational" CBA she oversaw. They bookend a mind-boggling ascension for women's sports collectively in Engelbert's seven years running a league that turned 30 this year, and is the longest-running women's league in the United States.
Pull back 10,000 feet, and those are the highlights of a theoretical Encyclopedia Britannica entry, not the turmoil that ultimately led to Engelbert's decision to retire at the end of the year, announced on Friday. She is the league's second-longest-tenured leader, and told the ****** ociated Press she had initially intended to do the job for three and a half years. She sped past that short window, and told the AP she had been mulling the decision for months.
"This is a really good time given the financial transformation journey we've been on," Engelbert told the outlet, adding it was her decision and she did not feel pressure from NBA or WNBA stakeholders. "Getting the collective bargaining agreement done, getting a long-term media rights deal done, getting expansion done."

Stephen A. Smith didn't hold back about the pros and cons about Cathy Engelbert's career after he found out about her announcement to retire from the position of WNBA Commissioner following the end of the 2026 season.
Engelbert, who turns 62 in November, told The ***** ociated Press on Friday that she has been thinking about retiring for months.
"When I first came to the league I intended to do this for 3 1/2 years," she said in a phone interview. "The 7 1/2 years exceeded that time. This is a really good time given the financial transformation journey we've been on. Getting the collective bargaining agreement done, getting a long-term media rights deal done, getting expansion done."
Smith made his usual appearance on ESPN's First Take show on Friday. He reacted to the news about Engelbert, being glad the news came as the WNBA transitions to a new era of leadership when Engelbert retires in the coming months.
"About time. Took her long enough. They've been wanting her gone. Wishing nothing but the best, she helped negotiate the latest collective bargaining agreement. Kudos to her. But as Napheesa Collier said last year, she questioned the leadership, accused them of being negligent, said they had the worst leadership in the world, and she had the support of a vast majority of the players," Smith said.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced on Friday that she will be retiring from her role at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Engelbert, 61, has held the commissioner role since July 2019. She is the second-longest president or commissioner in the league's history.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."
While the league has seen tremendous growth over the past seven years, there have been numerous questions about Engelbert's leadership style, most notably her ability to foster a strong relationship with the league's players.
Following a season-ending injury and the Lynx's elimination from the playoffs last season, Napheesa Collier called out Engelbert in an explosive end-of-season press conference where she called the commissioner the "worst" leader in the world.

The Bundesliga is back! On Matchday 1, Freiburg host Werder Bremen in an exciting opening fixture for both sides. Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus (and potentially Eren **** çi as well) will face his former club, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.
Julian Schuster's side will be looking to improve on last season and push for a return to the European places, with a Europa League spot potentially within reach. Bremen, meanwhile, have one primary objective: survival. After a shaky 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish 15th, Werder will be hoping to take a step forward this season - with Niclas Füllkrug expected to play a key role in their ambitions.
Who will come out on top in this match? With just about an hour to go until kickoff, here are the confirmed lineups for both sides:
SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1): Backhaus - Kübler, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo - Eggestein, Engelhardt - Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant - Matanović
Werder Bremen (4-3-3): Hein - Schmetgens, Pieper, Friedl, Deman - Chuky, Reis, Lynen - Njinmah, Füllkrug, Grüll

It's been reported that Celtic look to be shifting their signing policy in the wake of the disastrous and humiliating defeat in Linz, a loss which seen the club miss out on a big money bonanza. The current Celtic Board has now cost the club around £80m due to their failures in adequately strengthening the squad for the last two Champions League playoffs.

As the WNBA finds itself in a storm of controversy, some fans want Barack Obama to take over for Cathy Engelbert as the league's new commissioner.
The last year has been difficult for Engelbert, who has come under fire for her handling of multiple issues, including the standoff during the WNBPA's collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
But the way she has failed to address the recent controversy surrounding the league has people looking to outside figures to take over as the new commissioner of the WNBA.

UConn legend Geno Auriemma believes WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert can't control what players say, but there is one thing she can do.
Look, the WNBA is practically suffocating under its own growth right now. Every single week, actual basketball gets shoved to the backseat so the internet can fight another exhausting culture war.
That frustration finally blew wide open when Sophie Cunningham took a sledgehammer to Cathy Engelbert's leadership. Cunningham didn't hold back, basically suggesting Engelbert is out of her depth and could halt the future progress and development of the WNBA.
When players are openly talking about replacing the commissioner, you know there's an issue.
However, her job hasn't been made easy by all the outside noise involving the transgender situation, and former NBA players like Enes Kanter and Royce White.

Celtic are closing in on the signing of Ermin Mahmic. The highly rated Bosnian International caught the eye at the FIFA World Cup but Martin O'Neill's side appear to have won the battle for the attacking midfielder's signature.
The 21-year-old netted twice for Bosnia but Mail Sport reports that Celtic had already identified the player before the World Cup. Serie A, Bundesliga and Turkish teams have all sought to sign Mahmic but it looks like Celtic have won the race.
It is expected that Mahmic will make the switch to Celtic at the beginning of the week with a deal worth £7m plus add-ons. The 6ft midfielder is probably more of a creative midfielder than an industrious midfielder like Arne Engels, but with Niko Sigur also linked, it appears that Celtic are looking to strengthen the midfield.
Mahmic made 30 appearances for Slovan Liberec last season, scoring 8 times and ******* isting on 4 occasions. The midfielder is expected to be the fifth signing of the summer but it does not appear to be the last.
The Scottish Champions have already signed Kasper Høgh, Camilo Duran, Haissen Hassan and Mika Baur, indicating a change in approach from the club to prioritise quality against quantity.

West Ham have completed the loan signing of attacking midfielder Divine Mukasa from Manchester City.
The 18-year-old joins on a straight loan with no buy option, becoming West Ham's sixth summer signing, rejoining the club where he began his career.
He follows Keiber Lamadrid, Joël Veltman, Manor Solomon, Arne Engels and striker Joël Piroe.
Upon rejoining the club, Mukasa said, "I'm so excited to be back. Just excited to get playing again, really. Once I heard of the opportunity to come back, it was a no-brainer for me. "I grew up in Dagenham, probably about 20-25 minutes from here (Rush Green training ground). My first football team was Euro Dagenham. That's where it all started for me before coming to West Ham.
"I was born around here and have grown up in the Academy and spent nearly ten years there."

DALLAS — By Thursday afternoon, the get-in ticket price at the American Airlines Center hovered around $80. The cost to view the fourth-ever WNBA matchup between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark from the upper deck — less than a week after the scintillating third meeting in Indianapolis — was not overly prohibitive.
The show had different stars and a different result this time. The Dallas Wings notched maybe their most-needed win of the season with a 91-85 victory over the Indiana Fever, at last finding some equilibrium after losing Azzi Fudd to season-ending knee surgery and sliding into eighth place in the WNBA standings. It also ended the Fever's five-game winning streak and prevented them from clinching a playoff spot on their first try.
Those among the 20,297 seeking another Bueckers-Clark duel, after each scored 29 points in last Friday's meeting?
They instead got Arike Ogunbowale scoring 32 points and Jessica Shepard adding 26 for Dallas in her return to the lineup, while Indiana's Kelsey Mitchell carried a too-heavy load with 37 points — though she made history in doing so. Bueckers and Clark, meanwhile, missed a combined 22 of 31 shots from the field.
Still, even without those two playing captivating basketball, it appears the Wings and Fever under the same roof is becoming a must-attend rivalry. Among the notables on hand Thursday night: Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg and NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady. Even WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert made an appearance, chatting up Cuban between the third and fourth quarters.

Indiana Fever guard sparked nationwide conversation and debate, and also reached unprecedented levels of celebrity, after her comments on transgender athletes participating in women's sports.
"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told ESPN in a July profile. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Recently, Cunningham spoke about how she plans on continuing to voice her opinion, but also wants some of the focus to remain on the high-level basketball being played every night in the WNBA.
"People are like, 'You have a platform. Use it,' and then once you use it, it's like, 'Go back to playing basketball.' I think the reason why I stated that is because you go into media, and it's not anything even about basketball," she told USA Today. "I think I could do both," she said. "Ask me about what's going on and what I said. And also ask me how great my teammates are doing, how great our team is doing, how great the league is doing. We can be a great example of how to do both."
Cunningham also addressed the league potentially needing to move on from commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

With Arne Engels now a West Ham United player, after his £25 million move, and Reo Hatate seeking a move elsewhere, it's imperative that we add some more quality to our low on numbers midfield.
Mika Baur has of course arrived, but we are still in need of more additions all the same.
One of the several midfield players Celtic have been credited with an interest in is Bosnian international Ermin Mahmic. Mahmec who starred for his nation in the recent World Cup, plays his club football for Czech side Slovan Liberec, and is undoubtedly a player of great potential.
Having studied the 22 year old quite a bit since he was credited as a player of interest, it's clear to see that he's more than just a playmaker, with his ability to score from outside the box also forming a huge part of his game.
The youngster regularly likes to have a pop from distance, and more often than not he hits the target, with the ball either ending up in the back of the net, or resulting in the keeper having to make a save.

Sophie Cunningham has recently been discussing the future of Cathy Engelbert as the WNBA commissioner.
Engelbert has been commissioner since 2019, but her contract with the league is thought to be up after the 2026 season.
Now, Cunningham has hinted that we could see someone else in that role moving forward.
The Indiana Fever star suggested that Engelbert's role could 'maybe open at the end of the year', before adding 'that's up to Adam Silver at the end of the day'.
It remains to be seen exactly what the future holds for Engelbert, but she was asked about still being in charge come 2027 in an interview last month.

Cameron Carter-Vickers yesterday pledged his long term future to Celtic which is a boost after losing Arne Engels last week and only retaining the services of Alistair Johnston due to another injury picked up at Rugby Park ahead of his proposed move to Everton going through.
The Canadian right-back's injury record is becoming something of a concern and may well make future suitors think twice but that is a story for another day.
CCV spoke to the media yesterday afternoon ahead of this evening's hugely important first leg in the Champions League playoff against Austrian Champions LASK at Celtic Park. The American damaged his achilles in a Europa League match at Paradise last October against Sturm Graz and that ended his season, so he spent most of his time on the treatment table with AJ.
That frustrating period on the sidelines has resulted in Carter-Vickers taking stock and realising that he is perfectly content playing his football in a Celtic jersey.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the Hoops' main midfield targets following Arne Engels' £22million move to West Ham United over the weekend.
However, Celtic may now have to fend off Premier League interest if they are to bring the Lithuania international to Glasgow.
According to Europacalcio, Crystal Palace have set their sights on Gineitis and could soon open negotiations over a potential move.
Torino's asking price has been reported at between £8million and £12million, while Red Bull Salzburg are also actively interested, with Danny Rohl understood to be an admirer. Anderlecht have also reportedly made their interest known.

Martin O'Neill has been speaking to the media before Celtic host LASK in the Champions League play-off first leg on Wednesday.
Here are the main lines from the Celtic manager:
O'Neill says it's unlikely Celtic will sign any players - including a replacement for Arne Engels following his West Ham move - before Tuesday's deadline (23:00 BST).
The Celtic boss wanted Engels to stay for the play-off but the midfielder "didn't want to play in the matches in case he got injured", which O'Neill says is understandable.
On trying to find a replacement for Engels, he adds: "We're still in the process of trying to do that. We haven't been able to get someone in, in time, to do that. But there are a number of players that we're looking at and hopefully we will by the end of the transfer window."

The captains were announced Monday night. Michigan is in preseason camp preparing for the season which opens Sept. 5 against Western Michigan.

Koppen, who previously worked as Rangers' director of football recruitment, is now West Ham's director of player recruitment and helped identify Engels as a priority target for the London club.
The Hammers have paid Celtic an initial £22million for the Belgian, allowing the Hoops to double the £11m they invested to sign him two years ago.
Despite the significant profit, Engels' departure is a blow for Martin O'Neill ahead of Celtic's Champions League play-off against LASK.
Koppen has now explained why West Ham were so determined to land the 22-year-old, while also highlighting the experience he gained from establishing himself at a "big club" in Celtic.
