Aug. 2—Editor's note: This is the fifth in a series of stories that will run each day previewing Washington State's preseason camp before it begins on Aug. 6. This edition covers the Cougars' cornerbacks.
PULLMAN — When September rolls around and Washington State players take the field at Husky Stadium to take on rival Washington, and when the Cougars' defense rolls out, good luck recognizing any of the players in the visitors' secondary.
That's because among the 32 transfers WSU landed over the offseason, several of them play cornerback, a position at which the Cougs desperately needed to restock. Head coach Kirby Moore and staff did well to do so, likely using connections like new safeties coach Greg Burns and cornerbacks coach Brandyn Thompson to land a couple players.
But who are the new guys in this position group? And how might they fare this fall?

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has always kept his contract situation top of mind ever since coming into the league. From 2023 when he was the subject of trade talks to the summer of 2025 when he discussed possibly doing a new deal after he signed his four-year extension during the spring of 2024, Johnson has never wavered when talking about his future in the league. Now prior to the 2026 season, Johnson eyes a new payday and understands this could be his last season in Chicago.
On Saturday, Johnson met with the media and was asked about 2026 being a pivotal season with the explosion in deals for cornerbacks in recent years. Johnson didn't hesitate with his answer. "It's definitely a contract year," he said. "We all know with the cap hit and all that stuff. It's definitely a contract year for me, so at the end of the day, whether that's here or somewhere else, I've got to put it on tape that I am still a top guy in this league."
Johnson is set to make $24 million in 2026, which is the second-highest total among cornerbacks for this upcoming season, trailing only Marlon Humphrey of the Baltimore Ravens. But as Johnson alluded to, he has no remaining guaranteed money after this season and can be cut next offseason to save $16 million. If 2026 is a repeat of what happened in 2025, then that decision will be easy for the Bears.
Last year, Johnson dealt with groin injuries that caused him to miss two months of games. When he returned to action in late November, Johnson was a shell of himself and played through pain to help the Bears capture the NFC North and return to the postseason for the first time since his rookie year. Now that he's fully healthy, though, Johnson is eyeing a third big contract.
"I'm not a dummy. I structured my deal a certain way to put myself back at the table at the age of 27," Johnson said. "For me, it was always for this point to get here and then show out and do what I do and be healthy and be out there doing what I do best. That's covering, that's making plays, and being a difference maker. And then from there, wherever that contract talk goes, it goes."

San Francisco 49ers starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is heading into a pivotal 2026 season, according to Pro Football Focus.
PFF's Bradley Locker wrote that Lenoir is one of 10 players on Super Bowl contenders who make or break his respective teams' 2026 campaign. Locker pointed to a step back in coverage and run defense as reasons for concern with Lenoir.
Lenoir finished the 2025 regular season with 61 tackles (39 solo) and two interceptions across 17 starts, his lowest tackle total in four seasons as a starter. He also broke up three passes and allowed a 104.0 passer rating when targeted, per PFF, which had him at a 60.7 overall grade — 65th among 114 qualified cornerbacks.
It's still remarkable that the 49ers reached the divisional round given their defense finished 31st in success rate. While injuries and issues affected almost every level of the unit, Lenoir was also more ineffective than usual.
Lenoir led San Francisco in defensive snaps but posted a 65.7 PFF coverage grade, good for the 62nd percentile — a dip from the 74-plus coverage grades he posted in each of the previous two seasons. His 99.8 passer rating allowed still ranked 20th-highest among qualified corners, and he graded in the 51st percentile in coverage at outside corner. He was also flagged a career-high 10 times, and his run-defense grade fell to a personal low of 44.3.

We’re concluding our positional preview with the secondary, cornerbacks and safeties. The **** ans have 17 defensive backs on the offseason roster. The Tennessee ***** ans kicked off the opening salvo of training camp when rookies reported on Thursday and are just days away from taking the field.
The ***** ans changed almost everything during the offseason, with an upgraded staff led by head coach Robert Saleh, a retooled roster, and even a new organizational brand, setting higher expectations heading into the 2026 season. With so many new faces, it will be interesting to watch the team come together and build a solid foundation.
This is also true of the staff, the new coordinators, and the position coaches. Where Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic believes new nickelback coach Dalton Hilliard could be a coach to watch on Saleh’s staff.

The ***** ans changed almost everything during the offseason, with an upgraded staff led by head coach Robert Saleh, a retooled roster, and even a new organizational brand, setting higher expectations heading into the 2026 season. With so many new faces, it will be interesting to watch the team come together and build a solid foundation.
This is also true of the staff, the new coordinators, and the position coaches. Where Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic believes new nickelback coach Dalton Hilliard could be a coach to watch on Saleh’s staff.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Renardo Green enters his third NFL season with a target on his back, and it's not just Kyle Shanahan applying pressure. According to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, cornerback Jack Jones has quietly become one of the most significant additions of the 49ers' offseason and a legitimate threat to unseat Green as a starter.
"I remember talking to people during the offseason program around the 49ers, and they were of the opinion that Jack Jones was making a big-time push and could end up being a starter ahead of Renardo Green," Maiocco said. "I don't necessarily think will happen. But it could happen. ... "So, having a veteran player like Jack Jones on the roster and lining up and taking reps at the same spot as Renardo Green and Renardo knowing that he's in a battle or he's going to have to fight for his starting job can only help him."
Jones, 28, joins San Francisco after starting all but one game combined over the past two seasons: 16 starts for the Raiders in 2024, then all 17 for the Dolphins in 2025. He's coming off a season with 77 tackles, six passes defensed and an interception in Miami. Green, by comparison, played the entire 2025 season without competition at his spot, finishing with seven passes defensed and no interceptions.
The numbers, per Pro Football Focus, actually favor Jones. He ranked 67th among 114 qualifying cornerbacks in overall defensive grade last season, with a strong run-defense mark that placed him 15th at the position. Green ranked 93rd overall, with a run-defense grade of 65th.
Maiocco also doesn't believe Jones signed to play a backup role.

I feel like I’ve spent most of the offseason complaining about the way people have talked about the Packers’ offseason. Most NFL media seems to be fixated on the idea that the Packers had a bad offseason because they lost some players they weren’t going to use anyway, disregarding the fact that no Packers fan is sitting around shedding tears for Nate Hobbs or wondering how they’ll possibly get by without the lackadaisical services of Rashan Gary.
That’s the hazard of working as a national writer, though. There just isn’t enough time to understand the entire league. There are too many teams and too many players and too many coaches to have a good understanding of what everybody’s up to, and as a result, most national-level ***** ysis happens on the surface, at best — and often it’s not the best. The national take artists seem to often be making an attempt to one-up each other, and the ***** ysis suffers as a result.
The best offseason ***** ysis happens at the local level. That is, if you’ve got the writers who take the initiative to take a comprehensive look at what’s happened over the past few months. And fortunately, the Packers have a decent enough crop of beat writers to get the job done. I’ve been critical of the Packers’ beat in the past, but there are some gems out there, too, and I think our first link today is one of the best pieces about the Packers that I’ve read in a while.
Bill Huber takes an interesting approach to the offseason, looking at the winners and losers within the context of the Packers themselves. There’s no comparison to the league as a whole, or even the NFC North. It’s just a question of who won and lost the offseason relative to the rest of the team. And that’s the best way, I think, to look at the team, because it’s the closest to the way the Packers are going to look at themselves. The Packers aren’t evaluating their roster relative to the rest of the league. They’re going to look at every position relative to itself. Are the cornerbacks the best they can be? Few around the NFL have fallen in love with the Atlanta Falcons' offseason moves thus far, but general manager Ian Cunningham knows his job is to play chess not checkers. The Minnesota Vikings experienced a rough season from veteran cornerback Jeff Okudah in 2025, so much so that the club put its foot down in free agency and signed James Pierre, a 29-year-0ld from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During the NFL free agency period, several players landed massive contracts. However, teams also found plenty of bargain signings. The Minnesota Vikings not only added an impactful value signing in quarterback Kyler Murray, but they also may have landed a cornerback who is poised for a breakout.

Yesterday we looked at the top 10 cornerbacks, and today ESPN released the results of its survey of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts to help determine the top 10 NFL pass rushers.
Here are the top 10 pass rushers and how they relate to the Commanders. But understandably, the Commanders did not have one of their pass rushers on this year's top-10 list.

The Eagles drafted both Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in 2024, and the duo quickly ascended to All-Pros in 2025. Now, as we head into the 2026 season, they both are named among the Top 10 of their position, with newcomer Riq Woolen also receiving some love from the coaches and executives who participated.
Fowler admits in the article that it’s only a matter of time before Mitchell cracks the Top 3 on this list, but one AFC executive pointed to his lack of turnovers for his current ranking.
“Well-rounded coverage game and very competitive against the opposing team’s No. 1,” an AFC executive said. “Turnover production holds him back from the top of the group for me. Still an excellent player.”
The turnovers don’t seem like a huge issue when Mitchell ranks among the best in the league in yards allowed per target and yards allowed after the catch. Unsurprisingly, two Eagles landed on the list as Quinyon Mitchell checked in at No. 6, while Cooper DeJean rounded out the rankings at No. 10. Only Pat Surtain II, Derek Stingley, Christian Gonzales, Devon Witherspoon, and Trent McDuffie placed higher than Mitchell.

Seeing Mitchell blossom into what he has and seeing DeJean become an All-Pro himself is further validation of Howie Roseman's vision and great news for Philadelphia moving forward.
Mitchell's rise has been particularly impressive. The former Toledo Rockets standout has yet to record his first regular-season NFL interception. He does, however, have four spanning five postseason starts. League evaluators clearly aren't holding that against him, nor should they. His first-team All-Pro selection and advanced metrics only reinforce the eye test, suggesting quarterbacks have found very little success throwing in his direction. With training camp just weeks away, the young guns on the Cincinnati Bengals now have their big chance to make an impact and carve out an important role heading into the 2026 season.
For the Bengals rookies, starting July 29, it's a chance to make a name for themselves and compete for either key roles early on, or just to make the 53-man roster. Here are some of those rookies to keep an eye on.

The best unit on the Atlanta Falcons' roster going into the 2026 season is their secondary and the cornerstone of that unit is cornerback A.J. Terrell.
While Terrell has never been named to an NFC Pro Bowl team, he has nevertheless been performing at a relatively high level ever since Atlanta picked him in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Clemson. In 93 career games, Terrell has totaled six interceptions, 61 pass breakups, 14 tackles for a loss and six forced fumbles.
Terrell did not make the cut in ESPN's annual ranking of the top 10 cornerbacks in the league, according to a poll of anonymous NFL executives. However, he did at least earn an honorable mention this year.
