RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Ryan Blaney can't fully explain his recent dominance in NASCAR qualifying, but he attributed Mother Nature with an ****** ist Friday at Richmond Raceway.
The Team Penske driver captured his third pole position in the past five races and the 16th of his Cup Series career, turning a lap in 22.225 seconds (121.485 mph) around the 0.75-mile oval. Blaney was the second-to-last driver to make an attempt, and a cloud late in the session cooled the track for better grip and faster speeds.
"I appreciate the cloud," said Blaney, who also qualified first last week at Iowa Speedway and last month at EchoPark Speedway. "I got the benefit."
With 12 races remaining after Saturday's 400-lap event at Richmond, Blaney already has a career-best four pole positions for a single season and is tied with points leader Denny Hamlin for the series lead in 2026.

Brent crude futures turned lower after reaching their highest level in over a week. Rising energy costs have spurred inflation concerns and complicated the paths of central banks globally.
"When you get some indication of something positive happening — that this war is going to come to an end or some kind of an agreement — you start to see oil back off. Any positive news is better than negative news," said Robert Pavlik, senior ‌portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth.

If obtaining a high pitch count early in the game was the goal, Hunter Dobbins succeeded spectacularly. To his credit, the St. Louis Cardinals starter battled through a less than ideal start to keep Monday night's game with the Phillies close while the Philadelphia starter Andrew Painter showed no signs of the hamstring trouble he had recently. A tight game early would turn into a wild game late, but a furious Cardinals rally would fall short.
By the top of the 2nd inning, Hunter Dobbins pitch count was in the 50's. That's also the inning that his troubles cost the Cardinals a couple of runs. Brandon Marsh led off the Phillies 2nd with a single, but it was the next play that would be costly. Derek Hill chopped a ball up high to Hunter Dobbins who caught the ball and then sailed a show over Alec Burleson at first base into right field which allowed Marsh to score all the way from first base for a 1-0 Phillies lead. Edmundo Sosa followed that with a RBI single doubling the Philadelphia lead to 2-0.
The Phillies would add to their lead in the top of the 5th inning when Kyle Schwarber led off with a single that Jordan Walker turned into a double by mishandling the ball in left field that the official scorer correctly changed to a single and an E9. Stott then singled to right which moved Schwarber to third with no one out. Hunter Dobbins got Bryce Harper to ground into a double play, but that scored Schwarber giving the Phillies a commanding 3-0 lead.
I would not normally call a 3-0 lead "commanding", but the St. Louis Cardinals absence of offense made it feel that way. Andrew Painter, who has been recovering from hamstring issues, looked like Cy Young for the first 5 innings of the game as he held the Cardinals hitless and hadn't allowed a runner until he walked José Fermín in the bottom of the 5th.
The Cardinals would FINALLY break up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the 6th inning when Iván Herrera ripped a double into the left field corner after JJ Wetherholt walked to give St. Louis runners at 2nd and 3rd with just one out. Alec Burleson then came through with a clutch single up the middle scoring both Wetherholt and Herrera and suddenly we had a baseball game as the Phillies lead was just 3-2.

Nebraska is keeping things light as they head towards their season opener in a little less than a month, but one in-house moment has put Geep Wade's singing voice out there for the country to hear.
Wade is the Cornhuskers' offensive line coach, and grabbed the microphone to sing Morgan Wallen's "Sand in My Boots" in front of the entire team. Let's just say Wade is not going to be winning American Idol anytime soon, and the players let him know how rough his performance was.
Wade's boss, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule, also didn't pull any punches when discussing Wade's lack of karaoke chops.
"Geep was horrific," Rhule said to the Omaha World Herald (subscription required). ""That was probably the worst in 13 years as a head coach I've ever seen," the head coach continued.
It sounds like Wade would be well served sticking to his day job, coming up with run-blocking and pass protection schemes.

Quillan Salkilld leveled up last night (Sat., Aug. 8, 2026) at UFC Vegas 120 LIVE on Paramount+ from inside the revamped Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the rising contender put a dominant stop to lightweight veteran Mateusz Gamrot with a main event first-round submission (rear-naked choke).
This was a big spot for both fighters, but especially Salkilld as this was his first UFC headliner. Many thought the 26-year-old Australian had the skills to keep climbing the lightweight ranks, but once Salkilld was pitted up against Gamrot things quickly became real. It was up to Salkilld to prove he's got the chops to fight the best 155-pound fighters in the world.
Salkilled did exactly that as he clipped Gamrot early into the first round with a short left hook. That forced Gamrot to quickly go to his wrestling and try to drag Salkilld to the ground. To Gamrot's surprise, Salkilld showcased an impressive ground game as he reversed multiple positions and was able to get back to his feet.
Moments later, it was Salkilld who changed levels and scored a takedown on Gamrot. It was a shock to Gamrot since he's the one usually landing on top. Salkilld eventually work his way to Gamrot's back and locked in the rear-naked choke. Gamrot fought for a few seconds before tapping out and handing Salkilld his sixth-straight UFC win.

PFL Charlotte sent fans home sleepy on Friday night.
Making his sophomore appearance in the promotion, Charlotte's own Bryan Battle entered the cage to take on Dalton Rosta. The middleweight main event ended somewhat controversially, as the hometown middleweight Battle (13-3, 1 NC) came out the victor via a lackluster split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
Rosta (11-4) started the early goings of the bout with some strong leg kicks early, chopping at Battle's upright stance. That appeared to be a great recipe for success until it was entirely abandoned for a big Rosta body-lock takedown. Control didn't last for Rosta, as Battle defended well, pushing down Rosta's hands as he stood and walked around the cage wall. That was effectively where the rest of the round was spent until the 30-second mark. Some strikes were attempted between the two, leading to a failed late Battle double leg.
The second frame saw Battle get more aggressive, seeking long punches until Rosta worked his legs with kicks again. Those shots forced Battle to switch stance, and allowed Rosta to pursue another takedown. The remainder of the round was largely "highlighted" with more wall control exchanges and minimal strikes interjected.
Round 3 saw Battle tied up within the first minute to land some elbows and punches against the cage. Rosta started to land some punches at range once separated, and it was right back to failed takedown attempts and cage control in arguably the most forgettable fight of the year.

New signing Marcel Costly ******* isted Budu Zivzivadze's opener in the tenth minute. The Georgian striker started the season with the form he had at the closing stage of their Bundesliga campaign as his second goal was nullified for an offside.
The 3. Liga champions then leveled the score from a set-piece opportunity in the midpoint of the first-half. Center-back Niklas Wiemann headed home after Konrad Faber's initial delivery from a corner-kick parried away by Heidenheim's defense.
It was the turn of Osnabrück to fail to clear their lines when Costly restored Heidenheim's lead five minutes later. Another five minutes later, Faber produced his second ******* ist of the game when David Kopacz caught everyone by surprise with a stunning strike from outside the box.
However, the newcomers were behind once again as Jonas Föhrenbach's corner-kick was converted by Jan Schöppner in the injury-time of the first-half. The next goal also came from another corner-kick, but it didn't arrive until the 89th minute.

The euro looks like it is testing the 1.1560 level, an area that had been important previously on a swing high, so we'll have to see if we can break above there. It certainly looks like it's struggling, but I also recognize that recently the 1.15 level had been support. Typically speaking, this is a pretty choppy pair, and when we zoom out on the longer-term charts, we start to see that we are approaching an area that historically has seen a lot of chop and noise. So a little bit of a pullback here would not be surprising to me at all. Certainly, we are seeing interest rates in America try to turn back around to the upside during the early part of the session, so something worth keeping an eye on.
Currently, the US dollar and the Swiss franc seem to be very consolidated, and this is typical for this pair. But the interest rate differential most certainly favors the US dollar, and carry traders will be attracted to the wide spread here that they collect at any close of the day, especially with a lot of traders on Wednesday getting triple swap. Looks like the area right around 0.81 continues to be a magnet for price.
And finally, the British pound is stretching towards the 1.35 level. This is a lot like the euro in the sense that we had reached close to a swing high and failed a bit. Rates in the United States climbing a little bit early may provide a little bit of a headwind as well. 1.35 being broken would obviously be a strong headline because of the large round psychological number. It could bring in more buyers; we'd have to wait and see.
Currently, the 1.3435 level or so looks to be support. Could be range-bound. Today has no major economic announcements of any serious consequence. And with that, it would make sense if traders were a little bit range-bound and indecisive.

Whew. The hype building up around Barion Brown isn't dying down. On Thursday, the rookie wide receiver ended the New Orleans Saints' seventh training camp practice with an exclamation point by catching a touchdown pass deep downfield from Spencer Rattler. It's just the latest explosive play from a sixth-round pick most fans expected to make the squad for his skills in the return game on special teams. Instead, it's looking like Brown has real potential to help out offensively.
Rattler deserves a lot of credit on the throw that ended Thursday's practice session. He was throwing on the move, outside the pocket and under duress, but kept his eyes downfield and placed the pass where only Brown had a chance at catching it. It officially went down as a 46-yard completion that traveled more than 30 yards through the air. That's a Sunday throw. Brown came down with the pass even with veteran cornerback Isaac Yiadom covering him tightly. He's made a lot of plays against Yiadom and his fellow backup Martin Emerson Jr. on the second-string defense. There's 5,159 career defensive snaps and 169 games played between the two of them (including the playoffs).
But you can count Saints coach Kellen Moore as one of those observers who wasn't surprised to see Brown thriving on offense. Even if the team drafted him for his chops on special teams, Moore saw plenty of quality reps through Brown's college tape. Brown caught 122 passes in three years at Kentucky before transferring to LSU in 2025, where he posted a personal-best 53 receptions. That experience against a strong quality of competition prepared him for the challenges he's now facing in the NFL.
"I think we watched a lot of evidence of him playing receiver, and playing impactful plays in the SEC for a number of years, not just the LSU year, but the Kentucky year(s)," Moore told reporters after practice on Wednesday. "And when you watch all that exposure and get to know Barion, you're really fired up to have this guy, and so he's doing a great job. And I think the hardest part for these young guys really isn't the physical. You know, there's an acclimation there, but there's so much mental and so I think that's a credit to him that he's been really prepared to go out there and play."
It's a wide-open competition for the fourth and fifth roster spots at wide receiver. With the Saints having their top three locked in between Chris Olave, Jordyn Tyson, and Devaughn Vele, guys who started training camp on the roster bubble like Brown need every rep they can get to stand out and build their case. Brown is certainly making the most of his chances so far. With joint practices and preseason games against other teams coming up fast, he'll get more opportunities to prove he belongs.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Bhuvneshwar ******* ar's lack of regular 50-over and first-class cricket could prove to be a major hurdle if he is to force his way into India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

While praising the veteran seamer's performances in the IPL, Chopra said preparing for a 50-over World Cup requires sustained workload management, something that cannot be achieved by playing only T20 cricket.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra was asked about the World Cup prospects of both Bhuvneshwar ******* ar and Mohammad Shami.

"One thing goes against Bhuvi. I love him to bits, and I want him to play for India again, but when you don't play Ranji, your workload becomes limited. There are a handful of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In ODI cricket, you have to bowl 10 overs and field for 50 overs in a match. It's a lot of workload."

Bhuvneshwar has not featured in a first-class match since January 2024 and last played a List A game in December 2023. Despite that, he has enjoyed an impressive run with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, playing a key role in their back-to-back IPL ******* le-winning campaigns.

Chopra stressed that excelling in the IPL alone should not be the basis for selection in a 50-over World Cup.

"It's not easy in a tournament like the World Cup where you have to keep playing continuously. Not only the World Cup, but you will have to be a part of every ODI game from a year earlier. You will have to start playing him from now on."

According to Chopra, if the selectors are serious about including Bhuvneshwar in their long-term plans, they need to bring him back into the ODI setup immediately.

"He is not a bad option, but it will be a mistake unless we give him at least one year to get ready. If you pick someone for the 50-over World Cup based on him bowling four overs in the two months of the IPL and a month of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, no matter how good that person is, it will be wrong."

He also suggested that Bhuvneshwar should feature in the upcoming ODI series and even the T20I ******* ignments if he remains under consideration for the 2027 World Cup.
Comparing Bhuvneshwar with Mohammad Shami, Chopra felt the latter currently has a stronger case because he has continued playing red-ball cricket, including the Ranji Trophy, where he claimed 37 wickets. Shami is also set to feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

However, Chopra maintained that Bhuvneshwar had the better IPL season.

"It's the same thing for Shami, although he has played the Ranji Trophy and picked up 37 wickets. He is going to play the Duleep Trophy now as well. So Shami has a slightly better case to make, but the truth is that if we do man-to-man marking in the IPL, Bhuvneshwar ******* ar is ahead of him in that respect."

Chopra believes the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand could provide a clear indication of India's plans.

Being a professional sports broadcaster is difficult … or, at least it's supposed to be. But one Philadelphia Phillies fan made the job look incredibly easy after he was able to call an inning during Wednesday's game.
Lewis Kalb, a substitute teacher, won an auction to perform an inning of play-by-play during a Phillies radio broadcast. He got that chance in the third inning of Wednesday's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals and absolutely knocked it out of the park.
The instant Kalb started talking, fans could probably tell they were about to experience something special. Turns out, Kalb had the perfect baseball broadcaster voice. Oh, and he also had the chops to actually call the action.
There were a few errors throughout, though it was tough to catch them unless you were really paying attention. Kalb got the count wrong on the first batter, saying it was 1-1 when it was actually 0-2. He also called a pitch location wrong once or twice. But his delivery was so flawless and he was so well-composed that fans might have missed that live and in the moment.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs spoiled Tarik Skubal's debut with the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, posting a 5-1 victory behind key RBI singles by Nico ******* ner and Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Dansby Swanson connected for a solo homer as Chicago won for the third time in four games.
Skubal permitted two runs and four hits over six innings in his first start since he was acquired in a trade with Detroit on Saturday night. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner threw 85 pitches, 51 for strikes.
Kyle Tucker homered for Los Angeles, which finished with four hits in its fifth consecutive loss. It's the longest slide for the Dodgers since they also dropped five in a row in early September last year.
With two out and runners at the corners in the sixth, ******* ner hit a high chopper to the right of the mound. Alex Bregman scampered home on the infield single, giving Chicago a 2-1 lead.

Tarik Skubal had a perfectly fine Dodgers debut with six strikeouts in six strong innings. But the Dodgers couldn't score much at all, while the Cubs offense did just enough off Skubal then teed off on the bullpen in a 5-1 win at Wrigley Field, the season-worst fifth straight loss for the Dodgers.
Skubal allowed a home run to Dansby Swanson in the third inning, his only hit allowed the first time through the order. He struck out six, finishing off two of them with changeups, two more with four-seam fastballs, and one each with his sinker and curveball.
Dodgers defenders made several sharp plays behind Skubal, including two sliding catches in the outfield by Andy Pages and one by Kyle Tucker through the first three innings.
But in the sixth inning, a fly ball to deep right field by Alex Bregman that Tucker appeared to have a beat on simply dropped behind him for a double instead of an out. That put two runners in scoring position with one out. Tommy Edman with the infield in snagged a grounder and threw home to prevent a run from scoring, but a Baltimore chop in the infield into no-man's land behind the mound to second base fell for a Nico Horner single to score the go-ahead run.
Skubal was only at 85 pitches through six innings, but that was it for him, albeit after a stressful sixth inning, even with the bottom of the Cubs order due up in the seventh.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes India's chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final hang heavily on the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, warning that the visitors are in a "tough position" in the race for the summit clash.

India will begin their Sri Lanka tour with the opening Test on August 15. After nine matches in the current WTC cycle, India occupy fifth place in the standings with four wins and four defeats, giving them a points percentage (PCT) of 48.15.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, sit just below them in sixth place. They have registered one win, one loss and two draws so far, with a PCT of 41.67.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted how significantly the standings could change depending on the outcome of the two-match series. He pointed out that a 2-0 defeat for India would dent their qualification hopes while boosting Sri Lanka's prospects.

"If we lose 2-0, we will remain at only 39 percentage points, and Sri Lanka will jump to 61 percentage points, and they will be No. 4. Sri Lanka will be in the run if they beat India 2-0. Then they have a realistic chance of going forward, or else it's a so-near-yet-so-far story for them," Chopra said.

He added that a clean sweep would improve India's position, although not dramatically, while a drawn series would do little for either side.

"If we win this series 2-0, we will reach 57.58 percentage points. If we do a clean sweep, we will gain a little. If we draw the series 1-1, we won't gain anything because we will be at 48.48 and Sri Lanka will be at 44.44, and the positions will remain as is," he added.

Chopra also underlined the difficulty of India's remaining WTC schedule. After the Sri Lanka series, India are set to travel to New Zealand for a two-Test series before hosting Australia in a five-Test contest early next year. According to Chopra, the shorter away ***** ignments leave little room for error.

"Going forward, we have a two-match series in New Zealand, where it is difficult to win. Even if you lose one match, you lose 50 percentage points. It's going to be a tough one, and after that, there are five matches against Australia in India. India is in a tough position," Chopra added.

India's upcoming ***** ignments present a stern challenge. They have not won a Test series in New Zealand since the 2008-09 tour under MS Dhoni and have managed just two series victories there overall.

The home series against Australia is also expected to test India after recent setbacks against SENA opposition. India were whitewashed by New Zealand and South Africa in successive home series, with the defeat to South Africa marking their first home Test series loss to the Proteas since 1999-2000. Under Temba Bavuma, South Africa also completed the rare feat of winning the ICC World Test Championship ***** le and a Test series in India in the same year.

Ever since Brent Venables became the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners in December of 2021, he's worked tirelessly to build the kind of defense in Norman that Sooner Nation can be proud of. It took time, but that vision has been realized over the last couple of seasons.
Venables' defensive chops are well-known in college football circle. Oklahoma general manager Jim Nagy claimed he was the best defensive play-caller in the nation back at SEC Media Days during an interview with Brooks Austin of "The Film Guy Network."
"I mean the two years he's coordinated the defense at Oklahoma (2023 and 2025), they've won 10 games," Nagy said. "As the defensive coordinator, I don't want to hear any argument who the best one is. We can have the argument who the second-best one is."
Nagy isn't the only one who thinks highly of Venables' defensive prowess. On3's Crain & Cone ranked the top defenses in college football for 2026, and they placed the Sooners right at the very top of the list.

As of this writing, the stock price is trading at around $218 in the early morning of July 31, roughly where it was on July 24. Some of the choppiness in the recent trading activity could simply be due to Bloom's success over the last several years. And just as with Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), when a company becomes so successful, expectations become that much harder to meet.

Reddit reported a strong second quarter but spooked investors by mentioning in an investor letter that traffic from search engines had grown "choppy."
The company's total revenue of $805 million jumped 61% compared to the year-ago quarter while net income was $253 million, up 183%. These beat Wall Street's expectations. Plus, the company said it expects to hit revenue of $860 million to $870 million with healthy earnings before taxes next quarter as well, which beat expected guidance.
Normally, telling investors that they can expect even better results to come would cause a stock to rise. But the stock slid over 10% in after-hours trading.
The culprit was likely CEO Steve Huffman's warning in that separate letter to shareholders. "Search referrals were choppy in the quarter, and traffic was more volatile later in the quarter, but the bigger picture is unchanged: the commercial business is strong," he wrote.
AI is clearly changing the search engine landscape — and investors seem to fear that Reddit's traffic may suffer.
